Quick answers — read this first
MRP or the average customers actually pay? The average customers actually pay — the average selling price, or ASP. Your ₹699.00 is a label. If half your orders take your 10%, the money that arrives averages ₹664.05, and every margin figure built on ₹699.00 is overstated by the difference. Report on ASP; keep ₹699.00 only as the number on the listing.

How do I work out my ASP? ASP = list price minus the discount, weighted by the share of orders that take it. Your discount is worth ₹69.90 a candle. At a quarter of orders that is ₹681.53; at half, ₹664.05; at every order, ₹629.10. In practice do not estimate the share — divide total revenue collected by units shipped and let the sheet tell you.

How much does the 10% really cost me? It is 10% of your price and 15.90% of your contribution. On a real CSI materials stack of ₹259.27, contribution falls from ₹439.73 to ₹369.83 when every order takes the discount — ₹6,990.00 across a hundred candles, with the same wax, oil, jar and wick in every one of them.

Does my cost per candle change when I discount? No, and that is the whole point. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00/kg, Jasmine at ₹3.92/g, a Black Glossy Glass Jar at ₹70.80 and an Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 cost the same on a discounted order as a full-price one. Only the price side moves.
The short answer
Use ASP, not MRP: Your ₹699.00 list less your 10% on the share of orders that take it. At half of orders the realised price is ₹664.05, and that is the number every margin percentage on your sheet should be divided by.
The cost side is fixed: The same 200 g of wax, 16 g of oil at 8% of wax weight, one jar and one wick cost ₹259.27 on live CSI stock in September 2026 whether the order was discounted or not.
A 10% cut is a 15.90% cut: ₹69.90 off the price is ₹69.90 off contribution, which was ₹439.73. Price fell a tenth; what you keep fell by more than a seventh.
One 699 rupee order value split into materials, contribution and the discount given away, at three levels of discount use The same label price, three realised pricesEach bar is your ₹699.00 list price. The materials block never moves;the discount eats the contribution block, not the cost block.MaterialsContributionGiven awayNo order discountedASP ₹699.00 · margin 62.91%₹439.73Half of orders discountedASP ₹664.05 · margin 60.96%₹404.78Every order discountedASP ₹629.10 · margin 58.79%₹369.83Materials ₹259.27 on live CSI pricing, September 2026. Your ₹699.00 andyour 10% are your own figures. Packaging, courier, fees and your timeare not drawn — they come out of the grey block, not the black one.
What it shows: your ₹699.00 list price drawn three times on one scale, split into the materials block that never moves (₹259.27 on live CSI stock, September 2026), the contribution block that pays for everything else, and the slice handed back as discount. Deliberately left out: packaging, outbound courier, payment-gateway fees, advertising, labour and rent — none of them is a CSI product and none is guessed at here. They are paid out of the grey block, which is exactly why the grey block is the one to watch.
Straight answer
Should margins be measured on the ₹699.00 label or on the average amount customers actually pay?
On the average amount customers actually pay, every time. The label price is a marketing decision; the realised price is an accounting fact, and only one of them can be reconciled to your bank statement. On your figures, the discount is worth ₹69.90 a candle. Weight that by how often it is used and you get the average selling price: ₹681.53 if a quarter of orders take it, ₹664.05 at half, ₹671.04 at two orders in five, ₹629.10 if it has quietly become your real price. Now hold the cost side still, because it genuinely is still. The same candle in live CSI materials — 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilogram, 16 g of Jasmine Fragrance Oil at 8% of wax weight and ₹3.92 a gram, a Black Glossy Glass Jar at ₹70.80 and an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 — is ₹259.27 in September 2026, discount or no discount. So contribution per candle runs from ₹439.73 at the label price down to ₹369.83 when every order takes the 10%, and gross margin from 62.91% to 58.79%. The number worth remembering is neither of those: it is that a 10% cut in price is a 15.90% cut in contribution, because the discount comes out of the only part of the price you were keeping. Across a hundred candles that is ₹6,990.00 handed back, from materials you paid for in full. None of this says stop discounting. It says measure on ASP, report on ASP, and set the discount knowing what it costs rather than what it looks like.
One line: ₹699.00 is the label; ₹664.05 is the money at half penetration, and the 10% costs 15.90% of contribution.
Your ₹699.00 is a label. ₹664.05 is the money, if half your orders take the 10%. The cost side does not move with it: 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00/kg, 16 g of Jasmine Fragrance Oil at ₹3.92/g, a Black Glossy Glass Jar at ₹70.80 and an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 come to ₹259.27 at September 2026 pricing, on every order you ship.

Two prices, and only one of them is money

A list price is a claim. A realised price is a fact. Margin belongs to the fact.

There are two numbers on every order you ship. The first is the price on the listing — your ₹699.00. The second is the amount that settles into your account after the code has been applied. When you discount rarely, the two are close enough that nobody notices the gap. When you discount often, as your question says you do, the gap stops being rounding and becomes the difference between a business you think you have and the one you actually have.

The name for the second number is average selling price, usually shortened to ASP, and it is the correct denominator for every margin percentage you will ever quote. Your ₹699.00 still has a job: it is the anchor customers see, it is what a discount is measured against, and it is what you print on a gift card. It is simply not what you earned. The arithmetic that connects the two is one line: ASP is the list price less the discount, weighted by the share of orders that take the discount.

On your figures the discount is worth ₹69.90 — 10% of ₹699.00 — and the only thing left to establish is how often it is taken. That share is the variable most makers never measure, and it is the one this page is really about. Guessing it low is comfortable. It is also the single most common reason a candle brand believes it has a margin it does not have.

Your figures · ₹699.00 list, 10% discount
Realised price and margin at every level of discount use
Share of orders that take the 10% Average selling price Given away per candle Contribution per candle Gross margin on ASP

Two orders in five ₹671.04 ₹27.96 ₹411.77 61.36%
Half of orders ₹664.05 ₹34.95 ₹404.78 60.96%
Three orders in four ₹646.58 ₹52.43 ₹387.31 59.90%
Every order ₹629.10 ₹69.90 ₹369.83 58.79%
Priced above: your own ₹699.00 list price and your own 10% discount, used exactly as given and never presented as CSI figures. The contribution column subtracts one constant — ₹259.27 of materials, priced from live CSI stock in September 2026: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 1 kg ₹599.00 (₹599.00/kg), Jasmine Fragrance Oil 1 kg ₹3,923.00 (₹3.92/g), Black Glossy Glass Jar Pack of 5 ₹354.00 (₹70.80 each) and Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 500 for ₹2,950.00 (₹5.90 each). Taxes included. Packaging, courier, fees and labour are not in the contribution column; they are paid out of it.

Read the first and last rows together. Between them sits ₹69.90 of price and 4.12 percentage points of margin — and a business that reports the top row while living in the bottom one will keep wondering why a 62.91% margin does not feel like a 62.91% margin at the end of the month. The middle rows are the interesting ones, because that is where most Indian D2C candle brands actually sit: a festive code in October, a welcome code for first orders, a friends-and-family code that spread further than intended, and suddenly two orders in five are discounted.

The CSI principle
Report the price you banked, not the price you published.
₹699.00 is on the listing. ₹664.05 is in the account at half penetration, and the whole ₹34.95 of difference comes out of contribution.

The cost side does not move, and here it is

A discount is a price event. Your wax has no idea it happened.

The reason ASP is worth the trouble is that the other side of the calculation is rigid. A discounted candle uses exactly the same wax, the same oil, the same vessel and the same wick as a full-price one. So the honest way to see what your discount does is to hold materials still at a real, checkable number and let only the price move. Here is that number, built on live CSI stock so you can price it yourself rather than take it from this page.

The costing unit is the series convention and it is worth stating in full: 200 g of wax plus 16 g of fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight, so 216 g goes into the jar. That is the reading carried through every figure on this page. The wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, whose page states a maximum load of 13% of total wax weight; the oil is Jasmine Fragrance Oil, whose page states soy use up to 10% of total wax weight and a flash point of 185°C with 0% vanillin. Where a wax ceiling and an oil range differ the lower one governs, so 10% is your ceiling on this pairing and 8% sits comfortably under it.

Live CSI pricing, September 2026, taxes included. CSI publishes no fill weight for this vessel, so no capacity is claimed here — the jar is priced per piece and the 200 g of wax is the costing unit, not an assertion that the two match. Measure your own jar with water to your wax line before you carry this stack into your own sheet.

Two honest notes on that stack before it gets used as a benchmark. The first is that ₹259.27 buys the four lines CSI sells and nothing else; your label, box, ribbon, outbound courier, gateway fee, advertising and hours are real costs that are not in it, and they are paid out of contribution. The second is that the vessel and the wick together are ₹76.70, which is more than the fragrance — a reminder that when a discount makes you hunt for savings, the wax line is rarely where the money is.

Recalculating cost per candle because you discounted. It is a surprisingly common reflex: the order came in at ₹629.10, so the sheet gets a new cost line to make the margin look normal. Nothing about the candle changed. Materials stay at ₹259.27, the wax was bought at ₹599.00 a kilogram before the customer ever saw the code, and pretending otherwise hides the discount inside the cost of goods where you will never find it again. Keep one cost per product and let only the price column vary.
Averaging the percentages instead of the money. Four orders at full price and one at 10% off is not "an average discount of 2%" worked out by feel, and it is certainly not the average of 0%, 0%, 0%, 0% and 10% applied to margin. Add the rupees: four times ₹699.00 plus one at ₹629.10 is ₹3,425.10 across five candles, so ASP is ₹685.02. Always divide total money collected by total units shipped. The moment your discounts differ in size — a 10% code and a festive 15% — percentage averages stop meaning anything at all.

Where the 10% actually lands

Ten per cent of the price is never ten per cent of the profit. It is always more.

This is the part that changes behaviour, so it is worth being slow about. A discount is quoted against the price, which is the biggest number in the calculation, and it is paid out of contribution, which is a much smaller one. The ratio between those two is the true cost of any discount, and it is fixed by your cost structure, not by the size of the code.

On your ₹699.00 with a ₹259.27 materials stack, contribution at full price is ₹439.73. Hand back ₹69.90 and you have handed back 15.90% of it. A 10% code is a sixth of your contribution, not a tenth. That multiple — call it the leverage of the discount — is simply the price divided by the contribution, and it is why brands with thin margins cannot afford the codes that brands with fat ones run all year.

Priced above: your ₹699.00 list price and your 10% discount, against the same ₹259.27 materials stack — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00/kg, Jasmine Fragrance Oil at ₹3.92/g, Black Glossy Glass Jar at ₹70.80 and Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90, live CSI pricing September 2026. The hundred-candle row multiplies the unrounded per-candle figures, so it may sit a paisa away from the rounded figure times a hundred.

There is a second, quieter effect in the same table. At half penetration your margin reads 60.96% instead of 62.91% — under two points, which sounds like nothing. But a two-point margin error compounds through every decision that uses margin: what you can afford to spend acquiring a customer, whether a marketplace commission is survivable, how much of a festive push you can fund. Reporting on ASP does not change your business. It changes the quality of every decision you make about it.

A discount is priced against your biggest number and paid out of your smallest one.

Measuring your own ASP in one sitting

You do not need to estimate the share of discounted orders. Your order export already knows.
1
1. Export one clean quarter, not one good monthPull every order for a full ninety days from your Shopify or Instagram order list. A month is too short: one festive code or one influencer drop will dominate it. Delete cancelled and refunded orders, and delete wholesale or corporate lines entirely — those belong in a different calculation with a different price basis, and mixing them is how an ASP quietly becomes meaningless.
2
2. Take product revenue onlyStrip shipping charged to the customer and any gift-wrap line out of the revenue column. You are measuring the price of the candle, not the total of the invoice. If a customer paid ₹629.10 for the candle and ₹50.00 towards delivery, the candle sold at ₹629.10 and the delivery is a separate question with its own arithmetic.
3
3. Divide money by units, never percentage by ordersASP is total product revenue divided by total units shipped. Do it for the whole quarter in one division. If the answer comes out at ₹664.05, roughly half your orders took your 10%; if it comes out nearer ₹629.10, the discount has become your price and the listing is fiction. Either answer is useful. Only the guess is not.
4
4. Rebuild every margin figure on the answerReplace ₹699.00 with your measured ASP everywhere it appears — in your gross margin, in your contribution per candle, in whatever you tell yourself a customer is worth. With materials at ₹259.27, contribution is ASP minus ₹259.27 and gross margin is that divided by ASP. Write the ASP and the date beside it, and recalculate once a quarter rather than once a year.
THE ONE LINE TO KEEP IN YOUR SHEET
Put ASP = total product revenue ÷ units shipped at the top of your costing sheet and let every margin cell reference it. Then add one cell beside it: list price minus ASP, in rupees. At half penetration that cell reads ₹34.95 and at full penetration ₹69.90. Watching one rupee figure drift is far easier than noticing a margin percentage slide two points over a quarter, and it will catch a code that leaked onto a coupon site long before your bank balance does.

One refinement worth adding once the basic version is running. If you use more than one code — a welcome discount and a festive one at different depths — do not try to model them separately at first. The single division in step three already captures every code, every size and every leak, because it only looks at money and units. Split it by code later, when you want to know which one is earning its place.

What ASP still does not tell you

A better denominator is not a complete sheet. The blanks below are still blank.

Moving to ASP fixes the price side of the calculation. It fixes nothing else, and it is worth being explicit about that so the improvement does not turn into false confidence. Contribution of ₹404.78 at half penetration is what remains after materials and before everything else, and everything else is a long list. CSI sells wax, fragrance, vessels and wicks, so those four lines can be priced from a live store. Nothing below is a CSI product, which means no honest figure for it exists on this page. Put your own numbers in and total the sheet as materials from CSI plus your own costs.

The rest of the sheet · your figures

Materials from CSI The four priced lines ₹259.27
Contribution at ₹664.05 ASP ASP less materials, before every blank above ₹404.78
Priced above: only the materials line of ₹259.27 — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Jasmine Fragrance Oil, Black Glossy Glass Jar and Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at live CSI September 2026 pricing — and the contribution line derived from your own ₹699.00 at half discount penetration. Every other row is deliberately empty. Do not write a typical figure into a blank: a guessed cost that travels into a margin is worse than an admitted gap.

Two of those rows deserve a sentence. Returns and breakage behave exactly like a discount — a replacement candle shipped free is a 100% discount on that unit, and it belongs in your realised-price thinking rather than in a separate mental box. Your labour is the line that stays blank longest, and leaving it blank is a decision rather than a neutral act. A candle that carries ₹259.27 of materials and forty minutes of your evening is not a ₹259.27 candle, whatever ASP you sell it at.

The same arithmetic, from the buying side

You are also somebody's customer. The codes work the same way, in your favour.

There is a neat symmetry worth using here. When you discount, your realised price falls below your list price. When you buy on a published code, your realised cost falls below the listed price — and the effect on contribution is exactly as leveraged in your favour as your own discount is against you. CSI publishes spend-based codes: HAPPY5 at 5% over ₹5,000, BIZWIZ8 at 8% over ₹12,000 and YAY10 at 10% over ₹20,000. Those are order-value discounts, not quantity breaks — they depend on what the whole basket comes to, not on how large a pack you choose.

Be precise about what that does and does not mean, because the distinction matters when you are costing. The per-kilogram and per-gram rates on this page are the listed ones. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks runs ₹598.00 a kilogram in the 500 g pack, ₹599.00 in the 1 kg and 5 kg packs and ₹599.90 in the 10 kg pack, so the larger packs are not cheaper per kilogram on this grade — what the big pack buys you is fewer parcels and fewer reorders, not a lower rate. Jasmine Fragrance Oil runs ₹6.87 a gram at 15 gm, ₹4.60 at 50 gm, ₹4.30 at 100 gm and ₹3.92 at both 500 gm and 1 kg; two 500 gm packs come to ₹3,922.00 against ₹3,923.00 for the single kilogram, which is ₹1.00 in favour of the pair and is worth knowing only so that you check the ladder rather than assume it.

TREAT AN INPUT CODE THE WAY YOU TREAT YOUR OWN
If you buy on a published code, apply it to the basket and then re-derive your rate per kilogram and per gram before it enters your cost sheet — do not leave the listed rate in the sheet and count the saving separately, or you will double-count it when you set a price. And do not reach a spend threshold by adding a scent you have not sold: a code you qualified for by buying stock you did not need is not a saving, it is inventory. Ask on WhatsApp about pricing on a large consignment rather than assuming a ladder exists.

The wider point closes the loop with your own question. Both sides of your business now have a list price and a realised price, and in both cases only the realised one is money. Measure your selling side on ASP, measure your buying side on what you actually paid per kilogram and per gram after any code, and the margin between the two is finally a number you can defend to an accountant, a lender or yourself at the end of a long festive week.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells wax, fragrance oil, vessels and wicks, and this page argues that the most valuable thing you can do this week costs nothing and buys nothing from CSI: divide your last quarter's product revenue by units shipped and use the answer instead of your listing price. It also says plainly that moving from Luxury Soy Wax Chunks to a cheaper grade would save a few rupees a candle against a discount that is costing you ₹69.90 — the price side is where your money is going, and no change of supplier fixes a pricing decision.

Every CSI price here is live stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, as CSI product pages state it: the costing unit throughout is 200 g of wax plus 16 g of oil at 8%, 216 g poured. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states a maximum of 13% of total wax weight and the Jasmine Fragrance Oil page states soy use up to 10%, a flash point of 185°C and 0% vanillin; where a wax ceiling and an oil range differ the lower one governs, so 10% is the ceiling on this pairing. CSI publishes no fill weight for the Black Glossy Glass Jar, so none is stated here and the vessel is priced per piece. The ₹699.00 list price and the 10% discount are your own figures, carried unrounded and never presented as CSI prices; the shares of orders shown in the table are illustrative levels to read your own measurement against, not data about your shop. Labels, boxes, outbound courier, gateway fees, advertising, labour and rent are not CSI products and are left blank throughout. This page does not calculate your tax position and gives no tax or pricing-law advice — ask your own adviser.

Frequently asked questions

Is ASP the same thing as net revenue per unit?
Close, and the difference matters. ASP is product revenue divided by units, so it already carries discounts. Net revenue per unit usually goes further and removes payment-gateway or marketplace commission as well, which would take your ₹664.05 down again by whatever your platform charges. Use ASP for pricing decisions and net revenue per unit when you are comparing sales channels. Whichever you pick, label the column so nobody later divides by ₹699.00 out of habit.
My discount is only on the first order. Does it still count?
Yes, and it is worth splitting out. A welcome code taken by every new customer means your ASP on first orders is ₹629.10 and on repeat orders ₹699.00. Measure the two separately rather than blending them, because the first figure is really a customer-acquisition cost wearing a discount's clothing, and it belongs beside your advertising line — which is one of the blanks this page will not fill in for you.
Should I raise my list price to absorb the discount?
That is your decision and this page will not make it for you. What the arithmetic can say is what the move would have to achieve: at half penetration you are realising ₹664.05, so a list price raised until the discounted price lands at ₹699.00 restores the old realised price only if the higher figure does not reduce the number of orders. Run the ASP measurement first, for a full quarter, so you are deciding against a measured number rather than an assumed one.
Does the discount change my cost per gram of scented wax?
No. The scented wax in this candle is ₹182.57 for 216 g of fill — 200 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilogram and 16 g of Jasmine at ₹3.92 a gram — and that rate is fixed by what you paid your supplier, not by what your customer paid you. Every cost figure on a discounted order is identical to the same figure on a full-price one.
What if I run two different discounts at different depths?
The single division still works and is still the right answer: total product revenue divided by units shipped absorbs a 10% code and a 15% festive code without you modelling either. What you lose is the ability to say which code cost what, so once the headline ASP is running, tag orders by code and repeat the division within each tag. Do not average the percentages — a 10% and a 15% code do not make a 12.5% discount unless they were used on exactly the same number of candles.
How often should I recalculate ASP?
Once a quarter is enough for a small brand, and always immediately after a festive run — a Diwali or wedding-season push can move a year's ASP on its own. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, so an October code will sit inside your October to December quarter and drag the average down where you can see it. Keep the previous quarter's figure beside the new one; the direction of travel tells you more than either number alone.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. The method — divide product revenue by units shipped to get a realised price, hold the materials cost constant, and recompute every margin on the realised price rather than the listed one — works with any supplier, any product and any currency.

Figures verified September 2026 (CSI live pricing). The reader's figures, used exactly as given and never presented as CSI prices: list price ₹699.00, discount 10% (₹69.90 a candle). The shares of orders taking the discount (none, one in four, two in five, half, three in four, every order) are illustrative levels for the reader to read a measurement against, not data about any shop; the resulting average selling prices of ₹681.53, ₹671.04, ₹664.05, ₹646.58 and ₹629.10 follow from them. Series convention: fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, so the costing unit is 200 g of wax plus 16 g of oil at 8%, 216 g poured, and that reading is carried throughout. Live CSI prices, September 2026, taxes included. Wax: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 500 g ₹299.00 (₹598.00/kg), 1 kg ₹599.00 (₹599.00/kg), 5 kg ₹2,995.00 (₹599.00/kg), 10 kg ₹5,999.00 (₹599.90/kg); the page states a maximum load of up to 13% of total wax weight. Fragrance: Jasmine Fragrance Oil 15 gm ₹103.00 (₹6.87/g), 50 gm ₹230.00 (₹4.60/g), 100 gm ₹430.00 (₹4.30/g), 500 gm ₹1,961.00 (₹3.92/g), 1 kg ₹3,923.00 (₹3.92/g); the page states soy use up to 10% of total wax weight, a flash point of 185°C and 0% vanillin. Vessel: Black Glossy Glass Jar Pack of 5 ₹354.00 and Pack of 10 ₹708.00, both ₹70.80 a jar; no fill weight is published for it, so no capacity is stated on this page. Wick: Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 500 for ₹2,950.00 (₹5.90 each). Materials total ₹259.27 a candle. Published order-value discount codes quoted: HAPPY5 5% over ₹5,000, BIZWIZ8 8% over ₹12,000, YAY10 10% over ₹20,000 — order-value discounts, not quantity breaks. Diwali 2026 is 8 November 2026. Labels, boxes, outbound courier, gateway and marketplace fees, advertising, returns, labour, electricity and rent are not CSI products and are left as blanks.
