My Customer Wants a Lower Price for 1,000 Candles — Which Costs Actually Decrease with Volume and Which Costs Stay Almost the Same?
शेयर करना
Which costs stay almost the same? Materials. At CSI's listed prices the oil, wax, jar and wick in this candle cost ₹166.23 at 100 pieces and ₹159.10 at 1,000, a 4.3% fall. Labels, cartons and electricity per candle are also flat unless a supplier quotes a run price.
Does anything get more expensive at 1,000? Cash. A bigger order ties up a bigger material bill for longer. At an example 1.5% a month, that cost rises from ₹2.49 to ₹4.77 a candle. Storage space, overtime against a deadline and the cost of a failed batch also grow with the order.
How much lower can my 1,000-piece price go? By about the rupees that fell: ₹47.35 a candle in this example. A candle sold at ₹499.00 for 100 pieces can go to about ₹451.65 for 1,000 at the same rupee profit per candle. Below that, you are paying for the discount out of your margin. See what to offer.
Every cost line, 100 vs 1,000
The example is a customer who took 100 candles at ₹499.00 each and now wants 1,000 of the same thing for less. The candle is a 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar with a golden lug cap, so the lid is already in the jar price. It uses an illustrative 150 g fill. The jar's fill weight is not published, so weigh your own filled jar and replace the figure. At an 8% load that is 12 g of Jasmine Fragrance Oil and 138 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, which is rated up to 10% by the wax maker, plus one Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1. Size the wick by burn test in your jar, because wick sizing per diameter is not published. Materials carry a 4% wax and oil allowance, 5% spare wicks and 2% spare jars, all working assumptions, and are bought in whole packs.
| Cost line | How it behaves | 100 pieces | 1,000 pieces | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance oil — Jasmine, 12 g + 4% (CSI listed) | Nearly flat; break already reached at 500 g | ₹52.12 | ₹49.03 | −₹3.09 (−5.9%) |
| Wax — CSI 464, 138 g + 4% (CSI listed) | Flat per kilo; pack rounding only | ₹76.11 | ₹73.57 | −₹2.54 (−3.3%) |
| Jar with golden lug cap — Salsa 200 ml (CSI listed) | Flat per jar above 50 | ₹31.51 | ₹30.30 | −₹1.21 (−3.8%) |
| Wick — Eco Thin C1 + 5% spare (CSI listed) | Flat per wick | ₹6.49 | ₹6.20 | −₹0.29 (−4.5%) |
| Order set-up (example ₹3,000.00 per order) | Falls — fixed per order | ₹30.00 | ₹3.00 | −₹27.00 (−90.0%) |
| Labour (example ₹150.00/hour, 6 → 4 min) | Falls — longer runs | ₹15.00 | ₹10.00 | −₹5.00 (−33.3%) |
| Delivery to client (example quotes ₹1,800.00 / ₹7,500.00) | Falls per piece | ₹18.00 | ₹7.50 | −₹10.50 (−58.3%) |
| Label (example ₹6.00) | Flat unless the printer quotes a run price | ₹6.00 | ₹6.00 | No change |
| Carton and dividers (example ₹3.00) | Flat | ₹3.00 | ₹3.00 | No change |
| Electricity (example ₹1.00) | Flat per candle | ₹1.00 | ₹1.00 | No change |
| Cash tied up (example 1.5% a month, 1 → 2 months) | Rises | ₹2.49 | ₹4.77 | +₹2.28 (+91.6%) |
| Cost per candle | ₹241.72 | ₹194.37 | −₹47.35 (−19.6%) |
Read it from the top. The four material lines together move from ₹166.23 to ₹159.10. Most of that small movement is pack rounding. A 100-piece order ends with more oil and wax left over in the last pack, and those leftovers are shared across fewer candles. The per-gram and per-unit prices are almost identical. The lines that actually move are set-up (−₹27.00), labour (−₹5.00) and delivery (−₹10.50). All three are example figures, and all three are yours to measure.
| Item | 100 pieces | 1,000 pieces |
|---|---|---|
| Jasmine Fragrance Oil | 2 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g = ₹5,212.00 | 25 × 500 g = ₹49,025.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg = ₹7,611.00 | 14 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg = ₹73,573.00 |
| 200 ml Salsa jar, golden lug cap | 105 jars (1 × 100 + 1 × 5) = ₹3,150.60 | 1,020 jars (10 × 100 + 4 × 5) = ₹30,302.40 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 110 wicks = ₹649.00 | 1,050 wicks = ₹6,195.00 |
| Material bill | ₹16,622.60 | ₹1,59,095.40 |
Where CSI's price breaks actually sit
Price breaks do exist on the CSI list. They are simply fewer, and sit lower down the quantity scale, than most makers assume. Here are the real ones, alongside the flat lines, so you know exactly which materials can move.
| Item | Small pack | Biggest listed pack | Per-unit saving | Where the break happens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, golden lug cap | 5 for ₹200.60 (₹40.12 each) | 50 for ₹1,475.00 · 100 for ₹2,950.00 (₹29.50 each) | 26.5% | Between 5 and 50 jars — below any bulk order |
| Mini Glass Jars, black | 5 for ₹129.80 (₹25.96 each) | 100 for ₹2,124.00 (₹21.24 each) | 18.2% | Steps down at 25, 50 and 100 jars |
| Bamboo Stirring Sticks | 5 for ₹118.00 (₹23.60 each) | 100 for ₹1,888.00 (₹18.88 each) | 20.0% | At 50–100 sticks |
| Mango Coconut Fragrance Oil | 100 g ₹500.00 (₹5.00/g) | 1 kg ₹3,964.00 (₹3.96/g) | 20.7% | At 500 g |
| Jasmine Fragrance Oil | 100 g ₹430.00 (₹4.30/g) | 500 g ₹1,961.00 · 1 kg ₹3,923.00 (₹3.92/g) | 8.8% | At 500 g |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 1 kg ₹450.00 | 5, 10 and 50 kg at ₹424.80/kg | 5.6% | At 5 kg |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg ₹507.40 | 10 kg ₹5,074.00 (₹507.40/kg) | 0.0% | None |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 1 kg ₹599.00 | 10 kg ₹5,999.00 (₹599.90/kg) | −0.2% | None (10 kg is fractionally dearer) |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 10 for ₹59.00 | 1,000 for ₹5,900.00 | 0.0% | None — ₹5.90 each at every pack |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | 10 for ₹120.00 | 1,000 for ₹12,000.00 | 0.0% | None — ₹12.00 each |
| Steel Wick Holder | 5 for ₹250.00 | 25 for ₹1,250.00 | 0.0% | None — ₹50.00 each |
The pattern is clear. Breaks sit at the bottom of the ladder: between a 5-pack and a 50-pack of jars, or between 100 g and 500 g of oil. By the time you are buying for 100 candles you have already passed most of them. The oils are the same story at catalogue scale. Of 91 oils listing both 100 g and 1 kg, 52 cost within 1% per gram, and only 24 save 5% or more. Mango Coconut at 20.7% and Citronella at 62.3% are the exceptions, and a few, like Love Spell, cost fractionally more per gram in the kilo.
One wax switch is worth pricing if your customer wants a lower number. Natural Soy Pearl Wax costs ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg up, against ₹507.40 for CSI 464. For the 1,000-piece order that is 2 × 50 kg + 4 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg for ₹61,596.00, which saves ₹11.97 a candle. It is a different wax, though. No fragrance-load ceiling is quoted for it in our data, so check its product page or ask us on WhatsApp for the maker's stated maximum. Treat 6–10% as a test range only, and burn-test it in your jar before you offer it. The cost that rises
The material bill for 100 of these candles is about ₹16,622.60. For 1,000 it is about ₹1,59,095.40. It also stays tied up longer, because production, cure and delivery take longer and corporate payment terms often run past delivery. The table puts a price on that with an example rate of 1.5% a month, standing in for whatever your money costs you: a loan's interest, or the return you give up by not using that cash elsewhere. Replace the rate with your own. What to offer the customer
You now know the honest number: ₹47.35 a candle came off your cost between 100 and 1,000 pieces. Passing all of it on takes ₹499.00 to ₹451.65 and leaves your rupee profit per candle where it was, at ₹257.28. Your total profit on the order is ten times larger, and your gross margin percentage moves from 51.6% to 57.0%.
| Offer | Price | Cost | Gross margin | Markup | Profit on 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same price as the 100-piece order | ₹499.00 | ₹194.37 | 61.0% | 156.7% | ₹3,04,630.00 |
| Pass the whole cost fall through | ₹451.65 | ₹194.37 | 57.0% | 132.4% | ₹2,57,280.00 |
| A round number the customer will hear | ₹479.00 | ₹194.37 | 59.4% | 146.4% | ₹2,84,630.00 |
Gross margin is profit ÷ price, and markup is profit ÷ cost. Quote both inside your own costing so you never confuse them. A round ₹479.00 gives the customer a visible step from ₹499.00 while keeping you above the pass-through line. If they want a bigger drop than that, change the candle, not the margin: a simpler label, a lower-cost oil tier, or the Soy Pearl wax switch above, each approved by the client first. Materials worth pricing for the bigger order
Three materials from this page are worth a closer look when a customer's order grows. The first is the example oil, whose break arrives early. The second is an oil with one of the largest kilo savings on the list. The third is the one soy wax with a real bulk step.

The same audit works in reverse when an order grows after you have quoted. If a 500-piece order becomes 1,500, the per-order lines shrink again, but cash, space and deadline risk grow. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier writing about bulk discounts has an obvious reason to say that bigger orders unlock cheaper materials. Our own listed prices say that mostly they do not, so this page lists every flat line and every real break we have, including the ones that sit below any bulk order.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Jar, stick and wick-holder prices were pulled 24–25 September 2026, and Eco wick and White Matte Jar figures are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026. Pack combinations are the cheapest whole-pack mix covering each quantity. All per-candle figures are arithmetic, shown to two decimals.
Set-up, labour, delivery, label, carton, electricity and the 1.5% monthly holding rate are examples to replace with your own figures.
