My Double-Wick Candle Is Fine Initially but Overheats Later — Should I Test Two Smaller Wicks Rather Than Changing to One Large Wick?
शेयर करना
What is "two smaller" at CSI? From a C2 pair, a C1 pair: there's no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2. From a Cotton Braided pair, a C2 pair.
What should I check first? Spacing and lean (wicks drifting together or towards the glass), draughts, the floor you stop at and the last session's length. Those cause late heat in a pair that's otherwise right.
What does the test cost? Nine 300 g candles, three arms: ₹1,760.20 for wax, a C1 20-pack and a Cotton Braided 10-pack, with your own oil, jars and holders.

Your double-wick candle, described precisely
Your symptom, stated exactly: a two-wick container candle that burns well for its first half (both flames normal, a full pool to the wall, the glass comfortable on your readings) and then, somewhere in the lower third, the flames grow, the pool goes deep and fully liquid, and the lower glass reads hotter than your limit. You're weighing two fixes: two smaller wicks, or one larger wick in the centre. If your pair is too hot from the very first burn, that's the double-wick candle with two large flames and too much heat; this post is about the late version.
The worked example, labelled: your own jar about 9 cm across (8.3 cm inside with 0.35 cm walls assumed; CSI lists no 9 cm jar, and its nearest wide listing is the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid at about 10 cm), filled with 300 g at 8% = 24 g fragrance + 276 g wax (load as a percentage of total weight) to about 6.5 cm, so about 46 g per cm and a 1 cm floor of 46 g. Two Eco C2 wicks sit 4.2 cm apart on a diameter, 2.05 cm from the glass. Above the floor there are 254 g to burn, about 85 g per third.
Why a pair that's right at the top runs hot at the bottom
Four things change as a container candle burns down, as common observations rather than CSI data. The glass above the pool has absorbed heat for hours and stops acting as a heat sink. The pool becomes fully liquid and deeper relative to what's left, so each wick has more fuel to draw. There's less solid wax below to absorb heat. And the flames sit closer to the base. A single wick feels all of this; a pair feels it twice, because two flames are putting heat into the same glass, and the two hot zones increasingly merge into one in the middle. The mechanism is set out in why a correct wick becomes too aggressive lower down; the published double-wick siblings a multi-wick candle perfect for the first half but extremely hot near the bottom and a double-wick candle that becomes dangerously hot near the bottom cover the general case.
The geometry explains why "two smaller" is the natural first step. In the worked jar the pool is 54.11 cm². With two wicks each serves about 27.05 cm²; with one in the centre, that wick must melt all 54.11 cm² and reach 4.15 cm to the glass in every direction. Smaller wicks reduce the fuel burned per hour without changing how the heat is spread, which is exactly what a candle that's right at the top and wrong at the bottom needs. A single wick changes the spread, which is why it tends to fail somewhere else.
Late overheating in a pair: causes, ranked
The ranking is our judgement for a double-wick candle that's fine early and hot late. Signs are common observations; CSI publishes no heat data for any wick or jar.
| Cause | What you'd see | Discriminating test | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Wicks drifted together or outwards (making: production) | One very hot centre, or hot walls on the wick sides; uneven tabs in spent jars | Measure spacing and wick-to-wall in spent candles | Hold the pair at a measured spacing while setting | ₹50.00 a holder |
| 2. Flames leaning into each other (making or using) | Flames bend together late; a merged hot zone | Watch the last third in still air; check spacing | Wider spacing; still air | Nothing |
| 3. Draught (using) | Flicker, soot on one side, uneven late heat | Same candle in still air | Placement advice on the label | Nothing |
| 4. Long last sessions or past the floor (using) | Hot only when sessions run long or below 1 cm | Session log; stop at the floor | Tested maximum session and floor on the label | From ₹413.00 for 500 care stickers |
| 5. Pair slightly too strong for the lower jar (making: wick) | Every candle hot in the bottom third, even centred, in still air, to the floor | C2 pair vs C1 pair over the full life | The smaller pair, if it reaches the wall early | ₹118.00 (C1 20) |
| 6. Heavy load or dense oil (making: formula) | Heavy mushrooming late; flames flare | Same pair, one load step lower within both ceilings | Load chosen by full-life test | Your own oil test |
| 7. Jar narrows or has a thick base (making: jar) | Heat jumps where the jar narrows or near a heavy base | Inside diameter at 2–3 heights; base thickness | Design for the narrowest point; another jar | Your own jar test |
Causes 1 and 2 are the double-wick-specific ones, and they're why the published sibling two wicks leaning toward each other asks about spacing before size. Cause 5 is the one this post's test settles. If causes 1–4 are clear and the bottom third is still hot, the pair is too strong for the lower jar, and the question in the title is the right one.
Two smaller or one larger, over the whole candle
| Option | Top third | Bottom third | Main risk | Wicks per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current: C2 pair | Full pool, normal flames (as you found) | Tall flames, deep pool, hot glass | Late heat (your report) | ₹18.88 |
| Two smaller: C1 pair | Smaller flames; must still reach the wall by burn 2 | Moderate flames, shallower pool | Slow pool or a thin ring early | ₹11.80 |
| One larger: Cotton Braided, centred | One tall flame; a ring of wax at the edge is common | One tall flame over a deep centre | Early tunnelling, a hot centre late | ₹12.00 |
| Mixed pair: C2 + C1 | Uneven pool, one side melts first | One side hotter | Asymmetry; not recommended | ₹15.34 |
The C1 pair's real risk is the opposite of your problem: smaller wicks may not get the pool to the wall in time on the first burns. That's why the test judges the top third first, and why "reaches the wall by burn 2" is part of the rule; whether early tunnelling that catches up is acceptable is a judgement the published sibling a 9 cm candle too hot halfway down without causing early tunnelling works through. The single wick's risk is structural: one flame has to do all the work from the centre. When a wide jar's single wick looks good, it's often because it's big enough to run tall, and that's the flame you don't want near the base. If you're moving from one wick to two (or back), more than the melt pool changes; changing from one large cotton wick to two smaller wicks lists what to revalidate.
Argued against our own interest: CSI's range gives you exactly one step down from a C2 pair. If the C1 pair tunnels and the C2 pair overheats, the honest answers are a different spacing, a lower load within both stated ceilings, a higher floor, a shorter maximum session, or a wick from a range with finer steps, which we may not stock. Ask on WhatsApp and we'll tell you plainly.
The full-life comparison: three arms, nine candles
Test candle, labelled: 300 g at 8% = 24 g fragrance + 276 g wax in your jar. Arm A: current C2 pair at your current spacing. Arm B: C1 pair in the same holes. Arm C: one Cotton Braided, centred. 9 candles; 216 g of oil and 2,484 g of wax. Session validity for a jar this wide: about 3–4 hours (judgement).
| Item | Need | Buy | ₹ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 2,484 g (nine × 276 g) | 3 × 1 kg (516 g spare) | ₹1,522.20 |
| Fragrance: your oil | 216 g (nine × 24 g) | From stock | your own |
| Arm A: C2 pair | 6 C2 | From stock | your own |
| Arm B: C1 pair | 6 C1 | Eco C1 20-pack (14 spare) | ₹118.00 |
| Arm C: one Cotton Braided | 3 | Cotton Braided 10-pack (7 spare) | ₹120.00 |
| Holders, if you have none | 9 | Steel Wick Holder, pack of 10 | ₹500.00 |
| Total, own holders | 3 kg wax + C1 20 + CB 10 | ₹1,760.20 | |
| Total, with holders | + Steel Wick Holder 10 | ₹2,260.20 |
About 10 days with daily sessions (worked example). If your pair is Cotton Braided rather than C2, arm B is a C2 pair (an Eco C2 10-pack, ₹94.40, covers it with four spare) and arm C is your current single Cotton Braided centred; CSI lists no sized, tabbed cotton wick larger than Cotton Braided.
Reading the result
| Result | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| B passes | Two smaller works | Switch to a C1 pair; re-approve each fragrance on it |
| B tunnels early, A hot late | No CSI step fits between | Wider spacing or a higher floor and shorter session on A; or a finer wick from elsewhere |
| Only C passes | One larger works in this jar | Use it, with three more candles per fragrance |
| A passes in still air at the measured spacing | The original was spacing, draught or session length | Fix holders, label and placement; keep the C2 pair |
| Nothing passes | The jar or formula is the limit | Lower load within both ceilings, a higher floor, or a different jar; see the three-wick redesign for wider jars |
For wider jars where a pair can't cover the pool and three wicks run hot, the redesign is a large three-wick candle generating too much heat; whether a multi-wick candle should carry a shorter maximum session on its label is maximum burn duration for multi-wick candles.
The CSI pair ladder, buy list and production
| Current | Two smaller | Pack and price | Per wick | Per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton Braided pair | C2 pair (6 wicks) | C2 10 ₹94.40 | ₹9.44 | ₹18.88 |
| C2 pair | C1 pair (6 wicks) | C1 20 ₹118.00 | ₹5.90 | ₹11.80 |
| C1 pair | None smaller at CSI | Spacing, load, floor, label; ask us | — | — |
| Comparison single | One Cotton Braided (3) | CB 10 ₹120.00 | ₹12.00 | ₹12.00 |
Argued against our own interest: if your spent jars show the pair drifted together, holders and a measured spacing may fix it with no new wicks at all; and if the C1 pair passes, you'll spend ₹7.08 less per candle on wicks with us than you do now.
The step to production quantity
Only after three of three, with each fragrance re-approved on the new pair. Worked example, labelled: 110 double-wick candles a month is 224 C1 wicks with a 2% allowance, so 2 × 100 + 2 × 20 = 240 for ₹1,416.00, the same ₹5.90 a wick at any pack; against the C2 pair that's ₹778.80 less a month in wicks. Holders: a pack of 25 Steel Wick Holders (₹1,250.00) holds a 25-candle pour and is reused. Wax: 110 × 276 g = 30,360 g, so 3 × 10 kg + 1 kg of CSI 464 for ₹15,729.40 (flat per gram). Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock; CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp.

Skip for now: wooden wicks as the "one larger" option (CSI sells one width; a pair of them is a different system to test from the top); the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid (₹212.40 for the 500 g size) unless you're redesigning the jar anyway, since it's about 10 cm and changes every number here; and any 500-pack of wicks before three candles pass every third.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, holders and wax named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that our range has one step below a C2 pair and none between C1 and C2, that the Steel Wick Holder's spacing isn't stated, and that a passing C1 pair costs you less with us than your current pair.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including Cotton Braided's "exceeding 8 cm" and "10.16 cm", the Steel Wick Holder's "up to 9 cm wide" and the Eco wick page's "minimal soot or smoke" claim.
The 9 cm jar, 0.35 cm walls, 4.2 cm spacing, 6.5 cm fill, 10.0 g an hour, 110 candles a month and a 2% allowance are labelled worked examples or our judgement; the option table shows tendencies, not CSI results.
