Procurement & Reorder · Fast and slow scents
A two-week delivery means fourteen days of every scent are consumed before the next bottle lands. For a fast scent that is kilos; for a slow one, a few grams. But the slow scent's reorder point ends up the bigger share of its sales, because one gift order can wipe it out.
2.08 kg
reorder point for a 240-a-month scent · 181.28 g for a 10-a-month scent · 14-day delivery · 150 g candles at 8% · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I calculate reorder points for fast and slow fragrances? Per scent: oil a day × 14 days, plus a buffer. For fast scents, a buffer of 7 days of sales. For slow scents, the bigger of 7 days or one large order (here 10 candles). Fast (240 a month): 2.08 kg. Very slow (10 a month): 181.28 g.

Why is the slow scent's reorder point more than a month of its sales? Because 14 days of 10 candles a month is under 5 candles, and a single gift order of 10 is twice that. The buffer has to cover the order, not the average. So the very slow scent reorders at 44 days of sales, the fast one at 21.

How does a two-week lead compare with one week? Every reorder point grows by 7 days of that scent's oil. The fast scent goes from 1.38 kg to 2.08 kg; the very slow one from 152.44 g to 181.28 g. See one week against two.

What do the orders cost? One month of the fast scent in Eucalyptus Spearmint: 3 × 1 kg, ₹9,204.00. Two months of the very slow Raat Ki Rani: 2 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g, ₹1,770.00. All four: ₹23,496.00.
The short answer
Per candle: 150 g at 8% = 12 g oil; with 3% allowance 12.36 g. Oil a day = candles a month ÷ 30 × 12.36 g.
Reorder points: Fast (240/mo): 2,076.48 g · Medium (90/mo): 778.68 g · Slow (30/mo): 296.64 g · Very slow (10/mo): 181.28 g.
Rule: Reorder point = oil a day × 14 + buffer. Buffer = the larger of 7 days of sales or your largest single order for that scent (10 candles here).

Two-week delivery: each scent's reorder point, measured in days of its own sales Dark = 14 days of sales (the delivery) · light = buffer · 150 g candles at 8% · buffer = 7 days or one 10-candle order, whichever is bigger One month of sales Reorder at 21 days 2,076.48 g Fast · 240/mo Eucalyptus Spearmint Reorder at 21 days 778.68 g Medium · 90/mo Vanilla Bean Reorder at 24 days 296.64 g Slow · 30/mo Santal Noir Reorder at 44 days 181.28 g Very slow · 10/mo Raat Ki Rani
Each bar is a scent's reorder point expressed in days of its own sales. The dark part is the same for all four: 14 days, the delivery. The light part is the buffer. For the fast and medium scents it is 7 days of sales, so they reorder at 21 days. For the slow scents, one 10-candle order is bigger than a week of sales, so the buffer grows. The very slow scent reorders at about 44 days of sales — above the dashed one-month line.
Straight answer
My fragrance supplier takes two weeks to deliver. How do I calculate reorder points separately for fast- and slow-selling candle fragrances?
Work each scent on its own. Take its oil use per day: candles a month ÷ 30 × grams per candle. With 150 g candles at 8% (12 g, 12.36 g with a 3% allowance), a scent selling 240 a month uses 98.88 g a day and one selling 10 a month uses 4.12 g. The two-week delivery sets the first part of every reorder point: 14 days of that scent. The buffer is where fast and slow part company. For a fast scent, 7 days of sales is a sensible buffer. For a slow scent, 7 days is only two or three candles, and a single gift order can be bigger than that. So size the slow scent's buffer from the largest single order you have had for it (here 10 candles), whichever is bigger. The result: the fast scent reorders at 2.08 kg, 21 days of its sales. The very slow scent reorders at 181.28 g, about 44 days of its sales, which is more than a month. That is correct, not wasteful: it is the smallest stock that survives one order during a two-week wait. Order fast scents in kilos (for Eucalyptus Spearmint, the 1 kg is 13.3% cheaper per gram than the 100 g) and slow scents in 100 g bottles.
One line: reorder point = 14 days of the scent + the bigger of 7 days or one large order — fast scents in kilos, slow scents in 100 g.
The fast scent is where the kilo pays. Eucalyptus Spearmint is ₹3,068.00 a kilo, ₹3.07 a gram, against ₹3.54 at 100 g. A month at 240 candles of 150 g is 3 × 1 kg, ₹9,204.00.

Four scents, four speeds

A two-week delivery is fourteen days of every scent you sell, all at once. The question is what fourteen days means for each one.

The example uses four scents at four speeds, from a fast seller at 240 candles a month to a very slow one at 10. They are real CSI oils chosen to show different price tiers and pack shapes; use your own list and your own sales. The candle is 150 g at an 8% load, so each holds 12 g of oil, and a 3% allowance for pour loss and test burns brings that to 12.36 g per candle. The two-week delivery is the reader's own figure; CSI does not publish delivery times.

150 g at 8% · 3% allowance · 30-day month · example scents
How fast each scent uses oil
Scent Tier Candles a month Candles a day Oil a day Oil a month
Eucalyptus Spearmint Fast 240 8.00 98.88 g 2,966.40 g
Vanilla Bean Medium 90 3.00 37.08 g 1,112.40 g
Santal Noir Slow 30 1.00 12.36 g 370.80 g
Raat Ki Rani Very slow 10 0.33 4.12 g 123.60 g

The fast scent uses 24 times as much oil a day as the very slow one. If the lead time were the only thing that mattered, the reorder points would be in the same ratio. They are not, and the reason is the buffer.

The reorder point for each

Every reorder point is the oil used during the delivery plus a buffer. The delivery part is simple: 14 × oil a day. For the buffer, this page uses a rule with two halves: 7 days of that scent's sales, or one 10-candle order, whichever is bigger. The 10-candle order is an example; use the largest single order you have actually had for each scent, such as a gift hamper or a café refill.

14-day delivery · buffer = the larger of 7 days or one 10-candle order
Each scent's reorder point
Scent Tier Candles a month Oil a day 14 days of oil Buffer Reorder point Days of sales
Eucalyptus Spearmint Fast 240 98.88 g 1,384.32 g 692.16 g (7 days of sales) 2,076.48 g 21.0
Vanilla Bean Medium 90 37.08 g 519.12 g 259.56 g (7 days of sales) 778.68 g 21.0
Santal Noir Slow 30 12.36 g 173.04 g 123.60 g (one 10-candle order) 296.64 g 24.0
Raat Ki Rani Very slow 10 4.12 g 57.68 g 123.60 g (one 10-candle order) 181.28 g 44.0

The fast and medium scents come out at 21 days of sales each: 14 for the delivery and 7 for the buffer. The slow scent's buffer is set by the 10-candle order rather than by a week of sales, so it reorders at 24.0 days. The very slow scent reorders at 44.0 days, more than a month of its average sales. In grams, the spread is 2.08 kg down to 181.28 g, a ratio of about 11 to 1, not the 24 to 1 you would get from speed alone.

The CSI principle
A slow scent's buffer is set by its biggest order, not its average day.
Seven days of a 10-a-month scent is about two candles. One gift order of 10 empties that in an afternoon and leaves you two weeks from the next bottle. Buffer the order you have actually seen.

Why slow scents need a different buffer

Averages lie most about the things that sell least.

A scent that sells 10 candles a month does not sell a third of a candle every day. It sells nothing for a week, then four in one order, then one, then nothing again. Its average is a smooth line; its reality is lumpy. A buffer built from days of the average protects the smooth line and fails the lumpy reality. That is why, for slow scents, the buffer is better sized from the orders themselves. If the scent sometimes goes out in a hamper of 10, the shelf needs 10 candles' worth on top of the delivery wait.

Same scents · a 7-day buffer for everyone vs the larger-of rule
What the one-size buffer would do
Scent Reorder point with a 7-day buffer Candles' worth Reorder point with the larger-of rule Candles' worth
Eucalyptus Spearmint 2,076.48 g 168.0 2,076.48 g 168.0
Vanilla Bean 778.68 g 63.0 778.68 g 63.0
Santal Noir 259.56 g 21.0 296.64 g 24.0
Raat Ki Rani 86.52 g 7.0 181.28 g 14.7

With a flat 7-day buffer, the very slow scent would reorder at 86.52 g, seven candles' worth. A single 10-candle order would take the shelf to zero with the new bottle still a fortnight away. The larger-of rule adds only 94.76 g to that scent, well under one 100 g bottle, and removes the risk. The fast scent is unchanged, because a week of its sales (56 candles) is already bigger than any single order.

Letting a slow scent run to zero because "it hardly sells". The scent that hardly sells is often the one a regular customer comes back for. With a two-week delivery, one empty shelf is a two-week gap for that customer. The fix costs a single 100 g bottle of stock. The alternative, if the scent really is not earning its place, is to retire it on purpose, not to let it lapse by accident.
Keep very slow scents as two bottles
For the very slow scent, the reorder point of 181.28 g is close to two 100 g bottles. The simplest rule: keep two 100 g bottles. When you open the second, order two more. That two-bottle rule gives a reorder point of 100–200 g at any moment, which covers the delivery and the gift order without any arithmetic.

One week against two

A two-week delivery costs you stock on every scent, but not equally. Each reorder point grows by exactly seven days of that scent's oil. For the fast scent that is a lot of oil; for the slow scents it is a few grams. The table shows the same scents with a 7-day delivery and a 14-day delivery.

Same buffers · 7-day vs 14-day delivery
What the extra week adds to each scent
Scent Reorder point at 7 days At 14 days Extra stock Extra value at the 100 g rate
Eucalyptus Spearmint 1,384.32 g 2,076.48 g 692.16 g ₹2,450.25
Vanilla Bean 519.12 g 778.68 g 259.56 g ₹2,050.52
Santal Noir 210.12 g 296.64 g 86.52 g ₹795.12
Raat Ki Rani 152.44 g 181.28 g 28.84 g ₹201.88

Almost all of the extra stock a two-week lead demands sits on the fast scents: 692.16 g of the fast scent against 28.84 g of the very slow one. If you ever have a choice of supplier or dispatch speed per scent, the fast sellers are where a shorter lead saves the most. If your supplier's lead varies, record it per order and use the slowest in the maths. The bestseller trigger page shows the same effect for leads from 3 to 21 days.

How much to order for each

The reorder point tells you when. How much depends on the scent's speed and the pack sizes. Fast and medium scents order a month at a time in kilos where that is cheaper. The slow scent orders a month in 100 g bottles. The very slow scent orders two months, because one month is only a little over 100 g and ordering it monthly would mean paperwork for a single bottle. All figures use in-stock bottles of 50 g and above.

All four ₹23,496.00

Look at the last column. Eucalyptus Spearmint is ₹3.54 a gram at 100 g and ₹3.07 at 1 kg, a 13.3% saving, so the fast scent belongs in kilos on price as well as convenience. Santal Noir is ₹9.19 at 100 g and ₹9.12 at 1 kg, less than 1% apart, so its 100 g bottles cost almost nothing extra and keep far less oil on the shelf. Raat Ki Rani is ₹7.00 at 100 g and ₹6.77 at 1 kg; for 10 candles a month, a kilo would last 243 days. Buying a kilo of a very slow scent is not a saving; it is two years of stock.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A kilo of every scent is the easiest order to place and the easiest to sell you. For the slow scents here it is the wrong buy: Santal Noir's kilo saves less than 1% per gram, and a kilo of Raat Ki Rani at 10 candles a month is 243 days of stock. Keep kilos for the fast sellers and buy the tail in 100 g bottles, even though it means more lines on the order.
If you order several scents on a two-week lead, send the list and monthly quantities on WhatsApp and we will confirm stock on the bottle sizes you plan around, so a missing size does not eat your buffer. GST invoicing and MSDS or IFRA documents on request.
Plan my fragrance reorders

Running it without a spreadsheet

The arithmetic only has to be done once per scent per quarter. After that, the reorder points can live on the shelf as bottle counts.

1
Sort your scents into tiersFast, medium, slow, very slow, by candles a month over the last three months.
2
Find each scent's biggest orderScan your orders for the largest single order of each scent. That is the slow-scent buffer.
3
Calculate each reorder pointOil a day × 14 + the larger of 7 days or that order. Here: Eucalyptus Spearmint 2,076.48 g, Vanilla Bean 778.68 g, Santal Noir 296.64 g, Raat Ki Rani 181.28 g.
4
Convert to bottlesFast: "order when two sealed kilos are left" (2.08 kg). Very slow: "order when you open the second 100 g bottle". Write it on each scent's shelf.
5
Keep an on-order noteWith a two-week lead, an order can sit in transit for half a month. Tape the order date to the shelf so nobody orders it again.
6
Review each quarterScents change tier. A slow scent that moves into the medium tier needs its buffer switched from order-sized to days-sized. The ten-scent page shows how to re-rank monthly.

A few neighbouring pages go further. For a new scent with no sales history at all, the new-fragrance page covers the first buy. For one bestseller and its exact kilogram trigger, see My Bestseller Sells 300 Units a Month and Uses 16 g of Fragrance per Candle — How Many Kilograms of Fragrance Should Trigger My Reorder?. If your wax supplier has its own long lead, the 10-day wax lead page sets that reorder level and explains why orders in transit must be counted. And for the full model behind all of these, the procurement model page puts sales, consumption, lead time, wastage and safety stock into one sheet.

A two-week wait is kilos for your best seller and one bottle for your slowest. Plan both, not the average.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page tells you not to buy kilos of slow scents, names oils where the kilo saves less than 1% per gram, and names the fast oil where it genuinely saves 13.3%.

Every oil price here comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026, in-stock sizes only. Oil use, reorder points, days of sales and orders are arithmetic on the reader's figures (a two-week fragrance delivery, fast and slow scents) and labelled example sales, shown so you can check them.

The 150 g candle, 8% load, 3% allowance, the example sales per scent and the 10-candle largest order are working assumptions to replace with your own records. CSI does not publish delivery times. Frequently asked questions

How do I set a reorder point for a slow-selling fragrance?
Oil a day × lead time, plus the bigger of 7 days of sales or your largest single order for that scent. For 10 candles a month of 150 g at 8% with a two-week lead and a 10-candle order: 181.28 g.
What is the reorder point for a fast-selling fragrance with a two-week lead?
For 240 candles a month of 150 g at 8%: 98.88 g a day × 14 = 1,384.32 g, plus 7 days (692.16 g) = 2.08 kg.
Can a reorder point be bigger than a month of sales?
Yes, for very slow scents with a long lead. Here the 10-a-month scent reorders at about 44 days of its sales. It is still only 181.28 g of oil.
Should I buy slow fragrances in 1 kg bottles?
Rarely. For many CSI oils the 1 kg is within a few percent of the 100 g per gram, and a kilo of a slow scent can last a year or more. Buy slow scents in 100 g bottles and keep kilos for fast sellers.
How much more stock does a two-week lead need than one week?
Seven more days of each scent. In this example, 692.16 g more of the fast scent and 28.84 g more of the very slow one.
What is the two-bottle rule for candle fragrances?
Keep a slow scent as two bottles of the size you buy. When you open the second, order two more. It gives a reorder point that covers a delivery and a single order without calculation. It suits scents selling up to a few dozen candles a month.
Two weeks, planned per scent
Fourteen days of each scent plus the bigger of a week or one big order. Kilos for the fast, 100 g for the slow.
