My Raw-Material Cost Has Increased 15% This Year — How Do I Calculate Whether Bulk Purchasing Can Absorb the Increase Before Raising Retail Prices?
शेयर करना
Can bulk buying absorb it? Not most of it. On live CSI ladders the only pack step in this candle is the wax: ₹2.60 a candle. Ordering the month in one go and splitting the parcels sensibly is worth ₹3.50 a candle. If you are already doing both, purchasing gives back ₹6.10 of the ₹36.86.
What about the discount codes? They are order-value codes, not quantity breaks. On the month's basket of ₹27,999.76 below, YAY10 is worth ₹2,799.98, or ₹28.00 a candle. If you already reach that threshold every month, that money is already in your cost and cannot be spent twice.
So what is left for the price? Between ₹2.76 and ₹30.76 a candle, depending on how well you buy today. For a maker already ordering at scale and already using a code, the residual is ₹30.76 — ₹3,076.06 a month at 100 candles. That is the number the price conversation actually starts from.
Size the rise before you try to answer it
The first mistake in absorbing a cost increase is arithmetical rather than commercial. If your materials cost 15% more than they did a year ago, the 15% was applied to last year's number. Today's number is 115% of it. So the rise, expressed as a share of what you now pay, is 15 ÷ 115, or 13.04%. On a candle costing ₹282.60 in materials today that is ₹36.86, not the ₹42.39 you would get by taking 15% off the current figure. The difference is ₹5.53 a candle, which is small on one candle and is the sort of error that compounds quietly through a pricing sheet.
Here is the candle this page uses throughout, so every later figure has something concrete behind it. The fill reading carried forward on this page is 200 g of wax plus 16 g of oil at 8% of wax weight, 216 g poured — fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, which is how CSI product pages state it. The wax is Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, bought as the 1 kg pack, because that is how most makers buy before they start thinking about bulk. The fragrance is Apple Cinnamon, whose page gives a soy candle range of 6–10% of total wax weight; the wax page gives a maximum of 13% of total wax weight, so the lower figure governs and 8% sits comfortably inside it. The vessel is a White Matte Glass Jar, priced per piece out of the 10-piece pack; its page states a 200 ml fill and a height of 8 cm by 7 cm wide, and this page does not convert millilitres into grams or claim that any particular pour fits it. The wick is a Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1).
| Line | Quantity | Rate | Cost today | Cost a year ago | Its share of the rise |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax — Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 200 g | ₹650.00/kg | ₹130.00 | ₹113.04 | ₹16.96 |
| Fragrance — Apple Cinnamon | 16 g (8% of wax weight) | ₹4.74/g | ₹75.90 | ₹66.00 | ₹9.90 |
| Vessel — White Matte Glass Jar | 1 | ₹70.80 each | ₹70.80 | ₹61.57 | ₹9.23 |
| Wick — Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 1 | ₹5.90 each | ₹5.90 | ₹5.13 | ₹0.77 |
| Materials per candle | 216 g of fill | — | ₹282.60 | ₹245.74 | ₹36.86 |
| At 100 candles a month | — | — | ₹28,259.76 | ₹24,573.70 | ₹3,686.06 |
Read the last column before anything else, because it decides where to look. The wax carries ₹16.96 of the rise, the fragrance ₹9.90 and the vessel ₹9.23 — the vessel is nearly as exposed as the fragrance and far more exposed than most makers expect, because a jar is a fixed rupee amount per candle and a rise applies to it in full. The wick carries ₹0.77, which is the one line where an increase genuinely does not matter. If you only have the attention for two lines this quarter, they are the wax and the vessel.
What CSI's pack ladders actually give back
The instinct after sizing a rise is to buy bigger. It is worth being exact about what that does on this store, because the honest answer is narrower than a costing blog usually suggests. CSI does not publish a per-kilogram quantity ladder across its range. Most waxes are the same rate per kilogram at every pack size, most oils are the same rate per gram from the 50 g pack upward, and the wick packs are the same rate per wick from the smallest pack to the largest. Run the ladder on the products you actually buy rather than assuming, because the exceptions do not follow a pattern.
On this candle exactly one line has a step. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 is ₹650.00 a kilogram in both the 500 g and 1 kg packs and ₹637.00 a kilogram in the 5 kg and 10 kg packs — a difference of ₹13.00 a kilogram, which on 200 g of wax is ₹2.60 a candle. That is real, it is repeatable, and it is about a seventh of the rise. The other three lines give nothing: Apple Cinnamon is ₹4.74 a gram in the 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs alike, so the kilogram pack costs the same per gram as the 50 g pack and buying it changes your outlay and not your cost per candle; the Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) is ₹5.90 a wick from the 10-pack to the 1000-pack; and the White Matte Glass Jar is ₹70.80 a piece in both of its published packs.
| Line and pack range | Smallest published rate | Largest published rate | Step on one candle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 · 500 g to 10 kg | ₹650.00/kg | ₹637.00/kg | ₹2.60 |
| Apple Cinnamon · 50 g to 1 kg | ₹4.74/g | ₹4.74/g | nothing |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) · 10 to 1000 wicks | ₹5.90 each | ₹5.90 each | nothing |
| White Matte Glass Jar · 5 and 10 pieces | ₹70.80 each | ₹70.80 each | nothing |
| Total available from pack size | — | — | ₹2.60 |
Freight: the line that really does move
Inbound delivery is where consolidation earns money on this store, and it earns it through the weight bands rather than through any discount. CSI publishes flat rates by weight band, and a parcel is charged on its stored packed weight, not on the weight printed on the label — a 1 kg pack of fragrance oil carries a stored packed weight of 1.5 kg and bills in the band above. Four small orders across a month pay four band charges. One order pays one, unless the total crosses out of the bands altogether, which on glass it very quickly does.
Take a month at 100 candles as the worked example. That is 20 kg of wax, 1.6 kg of fragrance oil, 100 wicks and 100 jars. Bought from live CSI stock that is two 10 kg packs of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at ₹6,370.00 each, a 1 kg, a 500 g and a 100 g pack of Apple Cinnamon, two 50-wick packs of Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1), and ten 10-piece packs of the White Matte Glass Jar. Goods come to ₹27,999.76. The stored packed weights are 22.0 kg of wax, 2.5 kg of oil, 0.4 kg of wicks and 50.0 kg of glass.
| How you order it | Parcels and packed weights | Service used | Delivery in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Line by line, as you run out | 22.0 kg + 2.5 kg + 0.4 kg + 50.0 kg | Expedited and Standard bands | ₹6,350.00 |
| Everything in one consignment | 74.9 kg in one parcel | None — above every published band | not priceable |
| Split by band: glass on its own, the rest together | 24.9 kg + 50.0 kg | Expedited bands | ₹6,000.00 |
| Difference | — | — | ₹350.00 saved |
| Per candle | over 100 candles | — | ₹3.50 |
Two things in that table are worth more than the ₹350.00. The first is the row that has no number in it. Everything in one consignment comes to 74.9 kg, and no published band covers it — the store publishes no rate above 50 kg. Consolidation has a ceiling, and on a materials order containing glass you reach it faster than you expect. The second is that the saving came from the split, not from the size. The wax, oil and wicks together are 24.9 kg and fall in the same band as the wax alone at 22.0 kg, so the oil and the wicks travel free; the glass is nearly all of the weight and has to go on its own anyway. If you had simply added everything to one cart you would have paid more, not less.
Order-value codes, and the half of them you already have
CSI publishes three spend-based codes: HAPPY5 at 5% over ₹5,000.00, BIZWIZ8 at 8% over ₹12,000.00 and YAY10 at 10% over ₹20,000.00. They are order-value discounts. They do not depend on pack size, on how many kilograms you take or on any negotiated rate; they depend on what the basket totals. That makes them the largest single purchasing lever on this page — and the one most likely to be double-counted, because if you already order ₹27,999.76 a month you are already taking the 10%, and it is already inside the ₹282.60 you costed at the top.
| Code | Threshold | On this basket | Per candle | Worth to you if you already use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HAPPY5 · 5% | over ₹5,000.00 | ₹1,399.99 | ₹14.00 | nothing new |
| BIZWIZ8 · 8% | over ₹12,000.00 | ₹2,239.98 | ₹22.40 | nothing new |
| YAY10 · 10% | over ₹20,000.00 | ₹2,799.98 | ₹28.00 | nothing new |
| Moving from BIZWIZ8 to YAY10 | — | ₹560.00 | ₹5.60 | two points of basket value |
| Starting from no code at all | — | ₹2,799.98 | ₹28.00 | the whole ten points |
The discipline here is to count the increment, not the total. If your monthly order already clears ₹20,000.00, YAY10 is worth ₹28.00 a candle and none of it is available to answer this year's rise, because you were taking it last year as well. If you order somewhere between ₹12,000.00 and ₹20,000.00 today, the honest figure is the two-point step — ₹560.00, or ₹5.60 a candle — and even that is only real if the extra basket value is materials you were going to buy anyway. Buying a scent you do not need to cross a threshold is not a saving; it is inventory with a discount attached.
Adding it up, and saying the residual out loud
Put the three levers side by side against the ₹36.86 and the picture is honest rather than encouraging. A maker who already buys in the largest packs, already consolidates the month's order and already reaches the top code recovers ₹6.10 — the wax step is available only if it has not been taken, and for this maker even that may be gone. A maker who can move up one code band recovers ₹11.70. A maker who buys line by line as they run out and uses no code recovers ₹34.10, which is nearly the whole rise — not because bulk purchasing is powerful, but because they were leaving money on the table before the rise happened.
| Lever | Already buying well | Room to move one code band | No code, line-by-line ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax pack step, 1 kg to 5 kg | ₹2.60 | ₹2.60 | ₹2.60 |
| Fragrance pack step | ₹0.00 | ₹0.00 | ₹0.00 |
| Wick pack step | ₹0.00 | ₹0.00 | ₹0.00 |
| Vessel pack step | ₹0.00 | ₹0.00 | ₹0.00 |
| Ordering the month in one go, split by band | ₹3.50 | ₹3.50 | ₹3.50 |
| Order-value code, counted as an increment | ₹0.00 | ₹5.60 | ₹28.00 |
| Recovered by purchasing | ₹6.10 | ₹11.70 | ₹34.10 |
| Residual, per candle | ₹30.76 | ₹25.16 | ₹2.76 |
| Residual at 100 candles a month | ₹3,076.06 | ₹2,516.06 | ₹276.08 |
| Residual over a year | ₹36,912.67 | ₹30,192.73 | ₹3,312.96 |
For most working makers the middle and left columns are the real ones, which means the residual is between ₹25.16 and ₹30.76 a candle. Against an illustrative retail price of ₹599.00 — illustrative, because nobody on a blog can tell you what your candle is worth — ₹30.76 is 5.14% of the price. That is the size of the price move that would leave your rupee margin exactly where it was. Whether you make it, absorb it, phase it across two seasons or change the specification instead is a commercial judgement and is yours to make. What this page insists on is that you make it knowing the number is ₹30.76 and not zero.
There is a fourth lever that this page deliberately does not count, and it should be named so that its absence is not mistaken for an oversight. Changing grade is not a purchasing saving. Moving 200 g of wax from Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at ₹650.00 a kilogram to Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilogram is ₹28.52 a candle, which dwarfs everything in the table — but it is a different wax with a different stated fragrance maximum, a different finish and a different burn, and it makes a different candle. That is a specification decision that starts with a burn test, not a purchase order, and it belongs in a separate conversation from this one.
Running this on your own numbers
One honest caveat about the whole exercise. This page has kept the recipe fixed — same wax, same oil, same 8% of wax weight, same vessel, same wick — because a cost comparison in which the product quietly changes is not a comparison at all. Every figure here assumes no wastage, which is an assumption and not a measurement: some wax always stays in the jug and a jar occasionally chips, so your real cost sits above ₹282.60 rather than below it. Measure your own wastage over one full batch and the gap you are trying to absorb will be slightly larger than the one computed here, which is an argument for doing the arithmetic sooner rather than for doing it differently.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells wax, fragrance oil, vessels and wicks, and this page still says the thing that costs it a sale: buying bigger will not absorb a 15% input rise on this store, because CSI publishes no per-kilogram quantity ladder. On the candle costed here the entire pack-size lever is ₹2.60 against a ₹36.86 rise. The largest honest lever is freight, at ₹3.50 a candle, and the largest lever of all — the order-value codes — is worth nothing new to a maker already reaching the threshold. If a supplier tells you that ordering more will make a cost increase go away, ask them for the two rates and do the multiplication yourself.
Every CSI price here is live stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, as CSI product pages state it; the fill reading carried throughout is 200 g of wax plus 16 g of oil at 8%, 216 g poured. Apple Cinnamon states a soy candle range of 6–10% of total wax weight and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 states a maximum of 13% of total wax weight, so the lower figure governs and 8% is inside both. The White Matte Glass Jar page states a 200 ml fill and 8 cm by 7 cm dimensions; no fill weight in grams is published and none is assumed here. The 15% is your figure, used exactly as given and never presented as a CSI price history; the year-ago column is arithmetic. Delivery figures are the published flat bands by weight as at September 2026, read on stored packed weights, and no rate is published above 50 kg. The retail price of ₹599.00 is illustrative. This page assumes zero wastage, which is an assumption and not measured data. Labels, boxes, courier to your own customer, gateway fees, labour, electricity and rent are not CSI products and are not costed anywhere on this page.

Figures verified September 2026 (CSI live pricing). Your figure, used exactly as given: a 15% increase in raw-material cost over the year. It is applied as 15 ÷ 115 = 13.04% of today's cost, so the year-ago column is today's price divided by 1.15 and is arithmetic rather than a price history. Series convention: fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, so the costing unit is 200 g of wax plus 16 g of oil at 8%, 216 g poured, and that is the reading carried throughout. Live CSI prices, September 2026, taxes included. Wax: Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 500 g ₹325.00 (₹650.00/kg), 1 kg ₹650.00 (₹650.00/kg), 5 kg ₹3,185.00 (₹637.00/kg), 10 kg ₹6,370.00 (₹637.00/kg); stated maximum fragrance load 13% of total wax weight, stated melting point 50–53°C and pour temperature 58–60°C, stated shelf life 60 months in cool, dry storage. Fragrance: Apple Cinnamon 50 g ₹237.18, 100 g ₹474.36, 500 g ₹2,371.80, 1 kg ₹4,743.60, all ₹4.74 a gram; the page states a soy candle range of 6–10% of total wax weight and notes that the vanilla and amber base notes contain vanillin. Vessel: White Matte Glass Jar 5 pieces ₹354.00, 10 pieces ₹708.00, ₹70.80 a piece at both; the page states a 200 ml fill and dimensions of 8 cm by 7 cm, and no fill weight in grams is published, so none is used here. Wick: Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 10 for ₹59.00, 50 for ₹295.00, 1000 for ₹5,900.00, ₹5.90 a wick at every published pack. Comparison grade named once: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40 (₹507.40/kg), stated maximum load 10%. Delivery: published flat rate bands as at September 2026, read on stored packed weights of 22.0 kg of wax, 2.5 kg of oil, 0.4 kg of wicks and 50.0 kg of glass; no rate is published above 50 kg. Published order-value discount codes quoted: HAPPY5 5% over ₹5,000.00, BIZWIZ8 8% over ₹12,000.00, YAY10 10% over ₹20,000.00. Illustrative: the retail price of ₹599.00 and the 100-candle monthly volume; the page assumes zero wastage, which is an assumption and not measured data.
