My Three-Wick Candle Looks Dramatic but Burns Extremely Aggressively — How Do I Determine Whether Fewer or Smaller Wicks Are Appropriate?
शेयर करना
How do I tell from the jar? Measure the inside diameter and the wick positions. Work out pool area per wick (πr² ÷ wicks), wick-to-wick and wick-to-wall distances. In a 10.3 cm-inside jar, three wicks get 27.77 cm² each: less than one wick gets in a 7 cm jar (31.17 cm²). Wicks set close together also pile their heat into one hot centre.
What do I test? Four arms, three candles each: your C2 trio as now, a C1 trio in the same layout, a C1 trio re-spaced, and a C2 pair. 4-hour sessions in still air, to the end, judged by third.
What does it cost? Wicks and stickers ₹406.80 (C1 20, C2 20 and one 40-sticker sheet); ₹218.00 if your C2 stock covers the control and the pair.

The geometry check: area per wick and distances
Your symptom, restated: a three-wick candle that looks impressive, three flames together, but burns far too hard: tall, lively flames, a pool that goes deep fast, a jar that runs hot. You haven't said it starts only low in the jar; if it is fine early and overheats after several hours or lower down, that redesign belongs to the large three-wick heat post. This one is about a trio that is too strong from the start. Whether "dramatic" is a flame you can sell at all is impressive versus commercially acceptable.
Measure the jar inside, at the fill line. CSI's listings don't state internal diameters, so if your outer diameter is all you have, subtract the walls; the worked example assumes 0.35 cm. An 11 cm outer jar is then 10.3 cm inside, r = 5.15 cm, a pool of 83.32 cm². CSI lists no 11 cm jar; this is the reader's own. Then measure where your wicks sit. For three wicks at the corners of an equilateral triangle, call the distance from the centre to each wick ρ (rho). Then:
| Layout | Wicks | Area per wick | Wick to wick | Wick to glass |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Now: tight trio (ρ = 1.8 cm) | 3 | 27.77 cm² | 3.12 cm (ρ√3) | 3.35 cm (r − ρ) |
| Spaced trio (ρ = r/2 = 2.575 cm) | 3 | 27.77 cm² | 4.46 cm | 2.575 cm |
| Pair on a diameter (s = r) | 2 | 41.66 cm² | 5.15 cm | 2.575 cm (r − s/2) |
| Reference: one wick, 7 cm jar | 1 | 31.17 cm² | — | 3.15 cm |
| Reference: one wick, 8 cm jar | 1 | 41.85 cm² | — | 3.65 cm |
Read it like this. Each wick in your trio has 27.77 cm² to melt, less than a single wick has in a 7 cm jar. If your trio is three C2s and C2 is the sort of wick you would use alone in a 7 cm jar, you have three wicks each working on less pool than they were made for, and their zones overlap. A pair gives each wick 41.66 cm², almost exactly what one wick has in an 8 cm jar (41.85 cm²). That is why "fewer" is a serious option and not a step backwards. None of this says which wick will pass; it tells you which arms are worth burning. How wide a jar has to be before you compare one, two or three wicks at all is the diameter question.
Why a trio burns hot in the middle
A single wick melts a zone around itself. Put three wicks close together and their zones overlap in the centre: that wax gets heat from all three flames, melts first and goes deepest. A deep centre feeds all three wicks more freely, which can make the flames taller, which heats the centre more. Three flames close together also draw air into one rising column, and flames that lean towards each other commonly burn taller and less steadily. These are common observations, not CSI measurements, but they explain the typical picture: a very hot, deep centre, flames leaning in, and a rim that melts last even though the candle is clearly over-powered.
That gives you two separate levers. Spacing moves the overlap: setting the wicks further out (ρ = r/2 is our starting point to test, labelled) spreads the heat towards the walls, at the price of bringing the flames closer to the glass (2.575 cm instead of 3.35 cm). Size or number changes the total fuel. The four-arm test separates the two: one arm changes only the size, one changes size and spacing, one changes the number. The deeper version of spacing-versus-size for pairs is wicks too close, one hot centre; the same logic in a three-wick jar is why this post insists on measuring ρ before buying anything. When two wicks lean together and heat the centre, the purchase-side diagnosis is spacing before size.
Aggressive three-wick burn: the causes, ranked
The ranking is our judgement, ordered so the free checks come first. B = how the candle is burned (user behaviour); F = how it is made (formulation and design).
| Cause | What you'd see | Discriminating test | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Untrimmed wicks or caps (B) | Tall flames from lighting; carbon on all three | Trim all three to 5–6 mm, still air, 4 h | Trim before every burn | Nothing |
| 2. Draught (B) | Flames leaning one way, one side melting first, soot streaks | Fans and AC off, away from vents | Placement; care-card line | Nothing |
| 3. Long sessions (B) | Fine at 2 h, fierce by 4–5 h | Log at 1/2/3/4 h | A tested maximum session (see 6977) | Nothing |
| 4. Wicks crowded in the centre (F: layout) | Flames leaning in, one deep hot centre, rim last to melt | Measure ρ; a re-spaced candle beside the original | Move the wicks out | ₹100.00 (stickers) |
| 5. Too much wick for the pool (F: size or number) | Full pool fast, deep pool, fast wax loss, hot glass even when spaced | Area per wick; smaller trio and a pair beside the current trio | Smaller (C1 × 3) or fewer (pair) | ₹306.80 (C1 20 + C2 20) |
| 6. Heavy oil or high load (F: formula) | Worse in one fragrance on the same trio | Same trio in a lighter oil | A wick spec per fragrance | Your own oil |
| 7. Uneven wicks (F: build) | One flame much taller; wicks at different heights | Measure exposed wick on each | Trim to one height at finishing | Nothing |
Causes 4 and 5 can look identical from the sofa; only the arms below separate them. If your jar is very large and the aggressive burn shows up mainly after several hours, how long a multi-wick candle should be burned at a time is the multi-wick burn-duration question.
The four-arm test and the approval rule
The worked example, labelled: your 11 cm (outer) jar, 10.3 cm inside, a 500 g fill at 8% = 40 g fragrance + 460 g wax (load as a percentage of total weight; weigh your own fill), Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (page: "Fragrance Load Up to 10%", "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"), Eucalyptus Spearmint, current trio C2 × 3 at ρ = 1.8 cm. A 10.3 cm pool needs about 4.1 hours by the one-hour-per-2.5 cm rule of thumb, so treat 4 hours as the minimum session.
| Arm | Wicks and layout | Changes | g/h (illustrative) | 4-hour sessions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A (control) | C2 × 3, ρ = 1.8 cm | nothing | 15.0 | 7 |
| B (smaller) | C1 × 3, ρ = 1.8 cm | size only | 10.0 (33% less fuel) | 11 |
| C (fewer) | C2 × 2, s = 5.15 cm | number and layout | 10.5 | 10 |
| D (smaller, spaced) | C1 × 3, ρ = 2.575 cm | size and spacing | 10.5 | 10 |
The CSI buy list and the production step
CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs, C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided. For a three-wick candle that makes the ladder short: Cotton Braided trio → C2 trio → C1 trio, and below that only fewer wicks. There is no tabbed wick between C1 and C2, nothing smaller than C1, and one wooden width. If a C1 trio is still too strong and a C2 pair won't reach the glass, the in-between you need (a C1 pair, a different layout, or a wick we don't sell) is a conversation: ask us on WhatsApp and we will say plainly what we can't supply.
| Item | Need | Buy | Per unit | ₹ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco C1 (arms B and D) | 18 | C1 20-pack (2 spare) | ₹5.90 a wick | ₹118.00 |
| Eco C2 (arms A and C) | 15 | From stock, or a C2 20-pack (5 spare) | ₹9.44 a wick | ₹188.80 |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 33 | One 40-sticker sheet (7 spare) | ₹2.50 a sticker | ₹100.00 |
| Wicks and stickers | ₹406.80 | |||
| Eucalyptus Spearmint (or your own oil) | 480 g | 500 g (20 g spare) | ₹3.30 a gram | ₹1,652.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (or your own) | 5,520 g | 5 kg + 1 kg (480 g spare) | flat per kg from 1 kg | ₹3,044.40 |
| Everything bought new | ₹5,103.20 |
Argued against our own interest: the wicks are the cheap part of this test; most of the ₹5,103.20 is wax and oil you may already have, and if your C2 stock covers the control and the pair, the test costs you ₹218.00. Don't buy our Steel Wick Holder for it (the card below explains why). On cost per candle, the options rank C2 trio ₹28.32, C2 pair ₹18.88, C1 trio ₹17.70: the cheaper wick bill is a side effect, never the reason to pick an arm.
The step to production quantity
Once an arm passes on three full-life candles, production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 60 three-wick candles a month, 2% allowance. If the C1 trio passes: 184 C1 wicks, so 100 + 50 + 20 + 20 = 190 for ₹1,121.00 (6 spare), plus 5 sticker sheets (₹500.00) while the 100-sheet is out of stock. If the C2 pair passes: 123 C2 wicks, 100 + 20 + 10 = 130 for ₹1,227.20. Record the template (ρ or s, measured inside) on the batch sheet with the wick: in a multi-wick candle the layout is part of the specification, and moving between one, two and three wicks re-opens the whole approval (what to revalidate when the wick count changes). CSI publishes no lead times; confirm yours on WhatsApp before setting a reorder point.
Four items for the trio test, and what to skip
Four items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 7 October 2026. CSI publishes no burn, heat or soot data for any wick, oil or jar, so nothing here is ranked on performance, and each card says when not to buy.

Skip for now: Cotton Braided for any arm (the wrong direction for a trio that is already too strong); the Wick Centering Device, which has one 4 mm hole and holds one wick; 500- or 1,000-wick packs before an arm passes the bottom third; and a fourth wick "for even melting". If the two-wick arm is the one that passes and later runs hot, the double-wick heat post and late overheating in double-wick candles take over.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, stickers, wax and oil named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you not to buy our Steel Wick Holder for this job, that our range has nothing smaller than C1 and no step between C1 and C2, that bigger wick packs cost no less per wick, and that the fix may be fewer wicks rather than more products.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack and the 100-sticker sheet are out of stock and are not used; every other item priced here is in stock. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the Steel Wick Holder's "3-hole layout" and "up to 9 cm wide", the stickers' "10mm", Eucalyptus Spearmint's load and wick lines, and the Eco page's "minimal soot or smoke".
Area per wick and wick distances are geometry on an assumed 0.35 cm wall, not burn predictions; the starting layouts (ρ = r/2, s = r), the consumption figures, session counts, the 500 g fill and 60 candles a month are labelled examples or our judgement. Non-price figures: "three-wick", "dramatic" and "aggressively" are the reader's (title). The 11 cm jar (CSI lists none at 11 cm), the 0.35 cm wall (10.3 cm inside, 83.32 cm²), ρ = 1.8 cm for the current trio, the starting layouts ρ = r/2 and s = r, the 500 g fill at 8% (40 g oil + 460 g wax, total-weight basis), the 7 cm and 8 cm reference jars, the g/h figures, 420 g burned, the session counts, 60 candles a month and the 2% allowance are labelled worked examples; area per wick and distances are geometry, not burn predictions. Ceilings as their pages state them (CSI 464 up to 10%; Eucalyptus Spearmint up to 10% for soy): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. The 5–6 mm trim, the 2.5–5 cm band, the 1–1.5 cm pool depth, the 1 cm floor and about one hour per 2.5 cm of diameter (10.3 cm ≈ 4.1 h) are common rules of thumb.
