The paraffin grade problem in India

Paraffin is a refined petroleum wax, and refining it means removing oil. How far that went is what fully refined and semi refined describe. It is not a marketing tier and not a quality opinion — it is a measurable difference in residual oil content, and it changes how the wax behaves at every stage. A listing that says only "paraffin wax, ₹X per kg" has withheld the most important fact about the material.

Here is what that residual oil does. Oil softens wax. A semi refined paraffin is physically softer, slightly greasier to handle, and more inclined to let oil migrate to the surface over time — the faint film, dulled patch or mottled bloom on a stored candle. Oil also carries odour, so semi refined wax has more of its own petroleum smell sitting underneath your fragrance. And oil burns less cleanly than wax, which is the mechanism behind the smoke that paraffin gets blamed for as a category when the real variables are grade and wick.

Fully refined paraffin has had that oil taken out: harder, whiter, more neutral in smell, flatter on top and cleaner under dye. That is why CSI's Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets cost ₹354/kg against ₹220/kg for the semi refined. You are paying ₹134 a kilogram for oil to have been removed, and whether that is worth it depends entirely on what the candle is for.

There is a second disclosure that matters just as much and is stated even less often: melt point. Two waxes can both be honestly described as fully refined paraffin and behave completely differently, because paraffin is produced across a range of melting behaviours for different industrial uses. Candle wax, board coating, packaging, textiles and rubber processing all draw on the same family. A supplier who cannot tell you where their wax sits in that range is, functionally, selling you a surprise.

Melt point decides what you can make with it

Melt point is shorthand for hardness. A wax that melts lower is softer at room temperature; one that melts higher is harder and holds an edge. Every format you make has a preference, and it is structural, not a matter of taste.

A soy producer can often get away with vagueness, because container soy is sold in a narrow band of behaviours. Paraffin is sold across a much wider one. The rupee-per-kilo advantage that makes it attractive at volume is exactly what makes an unspecified lot dangerous at volume: the mistake is not one spoiled candle, it is 5,000 of them.

You do have two ways to move a wax you already have: Microcrystalline Wax Slab at ₹149/500 g to add flexibility and tack, and Vybar Additive at ₹156/50 g to harden and bind. Both are adjustments to a known base. Neither rescues a base you cannot identify — which puts you back at the first question.

Volume economics: what the wax line actually costs

Two formats, because they are the two that volume producers actually run: a 10 g tealight and a 70 g votive. Wax only — wicks, vessels, fragrance, labour and freight excluded, to isolate the one line the wax decision changes. The last column of the votive table is the whole sourcing argument in one number. At 5,000 votives a month, choosing coconut-soy over semi refined paraffin costs ₹1,45,950 more every month — over ₹17 lakh a year on the wax line alone. Against Eco Soy CSI 400, the cheapest soy CSI stocks, the gap is still ₹62,720 a month. Nothing else on your bill of materials has that kind of leverage on it.

That is also the honest limit of the argument. Paraffin wins on cost and only on cost — not on the label, not with a customer buying natural wax on purpose, and not on the premium you can charge for the material. There is no 5 kg, 10 kg, 25 kg or 50 kg paraffin variant on the store, and we are not going to pretend otherwise on a page aimed at volume producers. How to evaluate a paraffin supplier

Six checks. Run them on CSI and on everyone else you are considering — publishing the list only means anything if it works against us too.

There is a volume above which a candle-supplies retailer is the wrong counterparty for paraffin, and it is not a high one. If you consume several hundred kilograms of a single grade every month and your format is settled — plain tealights, plain votives, one wax, one melt point, no experimentation — talk to a bulk industrial wax distributor or a petroleum-wax trader selling 25 kg and 50 kg bags off a pallet. They will beat any candle-supplies retailer on rupees per kilogram, because they move a commodity in commodity quantities and their handling cost per kilo is a fraction of ours.

Price the trade honestly, because you give up four things. Small quantities — nobody is selling you 1 kg to test a new melt point, and minimums are measured in bags. The single-invoice basket: wax, wicks, containers, dyes and fragrance on one GST invoice, which saves real money in freight and administration — the case is in can I buy all my candle making materials from one supplier. Candle-specific support: an industrial distributor can give you the specification but not why your votives crack or which wick suits a 70 g vessel. And storage and cash-flow risk — 200 kg of wax in your workshop is capital sitting still and a fire-load to manage.

The sensible shape for most growing producers is both: bulk-source the one grade you use most, keep a supplies account for everything else — small quantities of the other grade, microcrystalline and Vybar for blending trials, and the accessories that never justify their own freight charge. Below several hundred kilos a month the split is not worth the administration. Scaling to 1,000 orders a month covers where the crossover tends to land.
