Candle Supplier Guides · Pricing
The honest answer starts with an arithmetic surprise: on live CSI rates the sandalwood candle costs almost the same as the range candle, and the oud one does not. Here is the gap, both ways of measuring it, and what it does on a shelf.
₹54.08
more materials in the oud candle than the range scent · ₹4.91 more in the sandalwood one · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much more does an oud candle actually cost to make? On live CSI rates, ₹54.08 a candle. The same 200 g of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at 8%, the same Premium Glass Clip Top Container and the same wick come to ₹364.90 under every scent; only the 16 g of fragrance moves, from ₹75.52 for Verbena to ₹129.60 for White Royal Oud.

Does the sandalwood candle cost significantly more too? No — and that is the finding most worth having. Sandalwood at ₹5.03 a gram puts ₹80.43 in the candle against ₹75.52 for the range scent, a difference of ₹4.91, or 1.11% of the candle. A premium-sounding name is not a premium cost.

What price gap holds my contribution? Two different gaps, and you must choose which you mean. To leave the same rupees as a range candle at an illustrative ₹899.00, the oud candle needs ₹953.08. To hold the same contribution percentage, it needs ₹1,009.39 — ₹56.31 more again. Each target price is illustrative because the ₹899.00 is.

So should I charge more? That is your decision and CSI will not make it. What this page gives you is the exact arithmetic on both sides: the rupee gap, the two targets it implies, what happens when you round to a shelf price point, and what an uneven ladder does inside a gifting set. Price is a market judgement; the cost is a fact.
The short answer
₹54.08 and ₹4.91: Those are the material gaps between the oud candle, the sandalwood candle and a range candle built to the same recipe. One is 12.3% of the candle; the other is 1.11%.
Two targets, not one: At an illustrative ₹899.00 range price, equal rupees of contribution needs ₹953.08 and equal percentage needs ₹1,009.39. Decide which you are holding before you pick a number.
The name is not the cost: Seven live oud and sandalwood rate points run from ₹4.53 to ₹9.12 a gram, a 2.01× spread — and the cheapest of them costs less than the range scent.
Materials and contribution for three candles at one illustrative range price, and the price at which the oud candle leaves the same contribution in rupees The gap that holds contributionOne 200 g candle at 8% in one vessel. The ₹899.00 range price is illustrative.Materials from CSIContribution: your own costs and marginVerbena at the range price₹899.00materials ₹440.42 · contribution ₹458.58Sandalwood at the range price₹899.00materials ₹445.33 · contribution ₹453.67White Royal Oud at the range price₹899.00materials ₹494.50 · contribution ₹404.50White Royal Oud at ₹953.08₹953.08materials ₹494.50 · contribution ₹458.58The oud candle needs ₹54.08 more to leave the same rupees, or ₹110.39 to hold the samepercentage. The sandalwood candle needs ₹4.91.Contribution still has to cover label, box, courier, fees and your own hours.
What it shows: the same 200 g candle at 8% with three different fragrances, drawn as materials from CSI plus contribution at an illustrative ₹899.00 range price, with a fourth bar showing the oud candle at the ₹953.08 that restores the same contribution in rupees. The dashed line is the ₹899.00 price point. Deliberately left out: the contribution block is not profit — it still has to cover labels, boxes, outbound courier, gateway fees, labour and rent, none of which are CSI products and none of which this page will guess at. The ₹899.00 is an illustrative figure, not a recommended price.
Straight answer
Should an oud or sandalwood candle carry a higher price than the rest of my range?
Cost the two candles first, because on live CSI rates they do not behave the same way. Build one candle and hold it still: 200 g of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at 8% of wax weight — 16 g of fragrance, 216 g poured — in a Premium Glass Clip Top Container with an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1). That base is ₹364.90 whatever goes in the bottle. With Verbena at ₹4.72 a gram the candle is ₹440.42. With Sandalwood at ₹5.03 it is ₹445.33 — only ₹4.91 more, which is 1.11% of the candle and is not a reason to move a price. With White Royal Oud at ₹8.10 it is ₹494.50, ₹54.08 more, or 12.3%. So the honest answer to your question is that one of your two premium scents has a pricing problem and the other does not. If you do decide to move the oud price, the gap has two different sizes and they are not interchangeable. Against an illustrative range price of ₹899.00 — illustrative, not a recommendation — a range candle leaves ₹458.58 of contribution. To leave the same rupees, the oud candle must sell at ₹953.08. To hold the same contribution percentage of 51.01%, it must sell at ₹1,009.39, which is ₹56.31 more again. Neither figure lands on a shelf price point, and the rounding is a real decision rather than a tidy-up. What this page will not do is tell you what to charge: contribution is not profit, your own labels, boxes, courier, fees and hours come out of it, and those are yours to fill in.
One line: The oud candle costs ₹54.08 more in materials and the sandalwood one ₹4.91; holding contribution against an illustrative ₹899.00 needs ₹953.08 in rupees or ₹1,009.39 in percentage terms.
One candle, three scents, two very different gaps. 200 g of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at 8% in a Premium Glass Clip Top Container with an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) is ₹364.90 before the bottle. Add 16 g of fragrance and the candle is ₹440.42 with Verbena, ₹445.33 with Sandalwood or ₹494.50 with White Royal Oud — live CSI pricing, September 2026.

Cost the two candles before you price either of them

Your question assumes both scents are expensive. On live rates, only one of them is.

"Expensive oud or sandalwood" is a single phrase in your question and two different facts on a price list. Before any pricing argument is worth having, the candles have to be costed on the same recipe, and the discipline is to change nothing but the bottle. So: 200 g of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at ₹650.00 a kilogram, 8% of wax weight in fragrance — which is 16 g, with 216 g going into the vessel — a Premium Glass Clip Top Container at ₹229.00 and an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90. Everything except the fragrance comes to ₹364.90, and it is identical in all three columns below.

Live CSI pricing, September 2026, taxes included. Figures are shown rounded to the paisa and multiplied unrounded.

The sandalwood row is the one to sit with. ₹4.91 is 1.11% of the candle. It is smaller than the difference a single wick change would make, smaller than a ribbon, and far smaller than the effect of switching vessel. A candle whose materials cost ₹4.91 more than its neighbour does not have a cost-led case for a different price, and if you charge more for it you are charging for the story, the scent's standing in an Indian home, or scarcity — all legitimate reasons, none of them this arithmetic. Be clear with yourself about which argument you are making, because a cost-led price and a positioning-led price behave differently when your costs move.

The oud row is a different matter. ₹54.08 is 12.3% of the candle and it is the largest single-line difference anywhere in this format. Left unpriced it comes straight out of contribution, candle for candle, quietly, with nothing on the shelf to show for it. That is the case for a separate price, and the rest of this page is about how big it has to be.

The CSI principle
A scent name is a story. Only a rate per gram is a cost.
On live CSI rates the cheapest oud-family oil costs less per candle than the everyday range scent, and the dearest sandalwood-family one costs 2.01 times the cheapest.

The exact gap, and why there are two of them

Equal rupees and equal percentage are different targets, and the difference is not small.

To size a price gap you need a reference, so take an illustrative range price of ₹899.00. That figure is illustrative — it is used to make the arithmetic concrete and it is not a recommendation, because CSI does not tell anyone what to charge. At ₹899.00 a range candle costing ₹440.42 in materials leaves ₹458.58 of contribution, which is 51.01% of the price. Contribution is not profit: it is what remains to cover your label, box, outbound courier, gateway fee, labour, rent and whatever margin survives them.

Now there are two honest ways to say "the same". Hold the same rupees and the oud candle simply needs its materials plus ₹458.58, which is ₹953.08 — the range price plus exactly the ₹54.08 material gap. Hold the same percentage and the arithmetic is a division rather than an addition: materials ÷ (1 − 51.01%), which is ₹1,009.39. The second is ₹56.31 higher than the first, and the reason is worth understanding rather than memorising: a percentage target asks the price to cover the extra materials and earn the same proportional margin on top of them.

Both targets · illustrative range price ₹899.00
What each scent must sell at to match the range candle
Scent Materials Contribution at ₹899.00 Price for equal rupees Price for equal percentage
Verbena ₹440.42 ₹458.58 (51.01%) ₹899.00 (the reference) ₹899.00 (the reference)
Sandalwood ₹445.33 ₹453.67 (50.46%) ₹903.91 ₹909.02
White Royal Oud ₹494.50 ₹404.50 (44.99%) ₹953.08 ₹1,009.39
Gap above the range price — — ₹4.91 · ₹54.08 ₹10.02 · ₹110.39
Priced above: materials are live CSI pricing, September 2026 — Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at ₹650.00/kg, Premium Glass Clip Top Container at ₹229.00, Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90, and 16 g of each oil at the pack named in the previous table. The ₹899.00 range price, every contribution figure and every target price in this table are illustrative: they follow from the ₹899.00 and would all move if you used your own price. Contribution is price less materials from CSI; it is not profit and it is not a margin after your own costs.
Adding a percentage instead of the gap. "The oud oil costs about 70% more, so I will add 20% to the price" is two errors in one sentence. The fragrance is a minority line: the candle costs 12.3% more, not 70%. And 20% of ₹899.00 is ₹179.80, which happens to overshoot the equal-rupee target of ₹953.08 while undershooting the equal-percentage one of ₹1,009.39. Work from the rupee gap and the target you have chosen, not from a percentage borrowed off the bottle.
Pricing the oud up and leaving the sandalwood alone by accident. Makers often move both premium-sounding SKUs together because they feel like one category. On these rates the sandalwood candle needs ₹4.91 to hold its rupees and the oud candle needs ₹54.08. Moving them by the same amount either overcharges for one or leaves the other short, and in a range where the candles look identical the customer has no way to see why.

What the gap looks like on an actual shelf

Nobody prints a price ending in eight paise. Rounding is where the arithmetic meets the shop.

₹953.08 is a correct answer and an impossible price tag. Indian candle pricing clusters on familiar points — ₹899.00, ₹949.00, ₹999.00, ₹1,099.00 — and a ladder that reads an ₹899.00 candle beside a ₹953.08 one tells a customer nothing except that somebody used a calculator. So the practical question is which nearby point you round to, and what that rounding costs or earns. The table below prices the oud candle at four real points and measures each against both targets.

The oud candle at four price points · illustrative
Contribution at each point, against the two targets
Price point Materials Contribution As % of price Against equal rupees (₹458.58) Against equal percentage (51.01%)
₹899.00 ₹494.50 ₹404.50 44.99% short by ₹54.08 short by 6.02 points
₹949.00 ₹494.50 ₹454.50 47.89% short by ₹4.08 short by 3.12 points
₹999.00 ₹494.50 ₹504.50 50.50% ahead by ₹45.92 short by 0.51 points
₹1,099.00 ₹494.50 ₹604.50 55.00% ahead by ₹145.92 ahead by 3.99 points
Priced above: materials of ₹494.50 are live CSI pricing, September 2026 — 200 g of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, a Premium Glass Clip Top Container, an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) and 16 g of White Royal Oud at the 100gm pack. All four price points, the ₹899.00 reference and every contribution figure are illustrative and are shown to demonstrate the arithmetic of rounding, not to recommend a price.

Two results stand out. ₹949.00 — the obvious next rung — leaves you ₹4.08 short of the equal-rupee target, which is close enough that most makers would take it and stop. But it is 3.12 percentage points below the range candle's contribution ratio, so if you manage your range by percentage rather than by rupees, ₹949.00 quietly makes the oud your weakest SKU. And ₹999.00 clears the rupee target comfortably yet still sits under the ratio, because equal percentage needs ₹1,009.39. The two targets disagree about every one of these four points, which is precisely why you have to pick one before you look at the shelf.

There is a second, non-arithmetic cost to an uneven ladder, and it is worth naming because no spreadsheet shows it. A range where every candle is the same size, the same glass and the same weight, but one costs ₹949.00 and the rest ₹899.00, invites the question "what is different about that one" at exactly the moment a customer is deciding. If the answer is visible — a different lid, a heavier box, a named oud — the ladder explains itself. If the candles are identical apart from the label text, the uneven price does the explaining, and it usually explains the wrong thing. Either make the premium SKU look premium, or hold one price and accept that the oud contributes ₹404.50 instead of ₹458.58.

IF YOU ROUND, ROUND ON PURPOSE
Write down which target you are holding before you choose a point, and write down what the rounding cost. Rounding the oud to ₹949.00 gives up ₹4.08 a candle against equal rupees; at 120 oud candles a month that is ₹489.60 over a month — a number worth knowing rather than discovering. Each of those is illustrative, and the monthly volume is an example, not a forecast.
The premium end of the list, priced per gram. White Royal Oud 100gm ₹810.00 (₹8.10/g) · Sandalwood 1 kg ₹5,026.80 (₹5.03/g) · Woody Oud at ₹4.53/g · Santal Noir at ₹9.12/g. Seven oud and sandalwood rate points span 2.01×, so check the rate before you assume the tier.

"Oud" and "sandalwood" are not price bands

Seven live rate points, two families, and an order nobody would predict from the names.

The premise underneath your question — that oud and sandalwood are the expensive end of a range — is a statement about scent families, and scent families do not set rates. Here are seven oils from CSI's live list in September 2026, five of them oud- or sandalwood-family and one the everyday range scent this page has been costing against, converted into the same 16 g of a 200 g candle at 8%. The ordering is the point.

Santal Noir Sandalwood-family 1kg ₹9,120.00 ₹9.12/g ₹145.92 ₹510.82
Priced above: each oil at the pack named in its row, live CSI pricing September 2026, taxes included; the pack chosen is one that is in stock at the time of writing, and pack availability moves — the linked product pages are always authoritative. The candle column adds the same ₹364.90 base of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at 200 g, a Premium Glass Clip Top Container and an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1). CSI publishes no quantity-discount ladder, so the rate for each product is the pack price divided by its grams rather than a rule applied across the range.

Woody Oud sits at the top of that table at ₹4.53 a gram — below the Verbena the rest of your range uses. An oud candle built on it would cost ₹437.40 against the range candle's ₹440.42, so a maker charging a premium for "the oud one" on that oil would be charging a premium for a cheaper candle. At the other end Santal Noir is ₹9.12 a gram, 2.01 times the cheapest, and puts ₹145.92 into the same candle. Same two words on the label; ₹73.42 between them in the candle.

This matters for pricing in a way that goes beyond arithmetic. If your premium tier is defined by a scent family, it will drift every time you reformulate or a pack goes out of stock, because the tier has no cost floor underneath it. Define it by cost instead: decide what material gap earns a separate price — ₹54.08 clearly does, ₹4.91 clearly does not — and let the scents fall into tiers on that test. The label can still say oud. The price will have a reason behind it that survives a supplier change.

Tier by cost, then name the tier. Never name the tier and hope the cost follows.

Inside a gifting set, where the premium disappears

A set has one price, so an uneven ladder inside it is invisible — which is either the solution or the problem.

A great deal of Indian candle volume moves as sets rather than singles, especially in the Diwali and wedding months — Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, and corporate gifting orders for it are placed well before. A set is where the premium-scent question changes shape, because a set carries one price and the customer never sees the ladder inside it.

Take a set of 3 candles in this format with one oud and two range scents. Materials come to ₹1,375.34 against ₹1,321.26 for three range candles — the whole premium is the same ₹54.08, which is 4.09% of the set's materials. Priced to hold the same contribution per candle as three range candles at an illustrative ₹899.00 each, the set needs ₹2,751.08 against ₹2,697.00. That is a difference a set price can absorb without anybody noticing, and it is the strongest argument for putting your dearest scent into sets rather than onto an uneven single-candle shelf.

Priced above: materials per candle are live CSI pricing, September 2026 — ₹440.42 with Verbena and ₹494.50 with White Royal Oud, each on 200 g of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at 8% in a Premium Glass Clip Top Container with an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1). The ₹899.00 per-candle reference and every set price here are illustrative. Set packaging — outer box, inserts, ribbon, sleeve — is not a CSI product and is not in any of these figures; it is one of the blank rows below and it is usually the largest cost a set adds.

Say the unflattering half out loud, though. A set hides an uneven ladder and it also hides a thin one: if the set price does not move, the oud inside it is still costing you ₹54.08 and the set is simply absorbing it. Hiding a cost is not the same as covering it. Put the ₹54.08 into the set price deliberately, or put it into the set's contribution knowingly — what you should not do is discover it at the end of a festive season, when 120 oud candles will have carried ₹6,489.60 of unpriced material between them.

Setting a premium-scent price, in four steps

Four steps, and the third one is the only one that is genuinely a judgement.
1
1. Cost both candles on one recipe, changing only the bottleSame wax grams, same load, same vessel, same wick. Here: ₹364.90 of base plus 16 g of fragrance, giving ₹440.42, ₹445.33 and ₹494.50. Use the rate of the pack you actually reorder — divide its price by its grams — and write the pack size beside the rate so the sheet says where the figure came from.
2
2. Subtract, and decide whether the gap deserves a price at all₹4.91 and ₹54.08 are the whole question. Set yourself a threshold in advance — a rupee figure, or a share of the candle — and apply it to every scent. Without a threshold you will move prices for the scents whose names sound expensive, which is how a range ends up with a ladder nobody can explain.
3
3. Choose which target you are holding: rupees or percentageEqual rupees adds the gap to the range price: ₹953.08. Equal percentage divides materials by one minus the range ratio: ₹1,009.39. Rupees is the simpler target and the kinder one to a premium SKU; percentage protects your blended margin when costs rise across the range. Both are defensible. Choosing neither and guessing is not.
4
4. Round to a real price point and record what the rounding costTake the nearest point you would actually print — ₹949.00, ₹999.00 — and write down the difference against your target, per candle and per month. Then put the non-CSI costs in the blank rows below and check the contribution still covers them. If it does not, the problem was never the fragrance.

What this page will not decide for you

Contribution is not profit, and a materials gap is not a price.

Every contribution figure above is the price less the materials CSI supplies, and nothing more. The costs below are real, they come out of that contribution, and none of them is a CSI product, so no honest figure for them exists on this page. On a premium SKU two of them are usually larger than on the rest of the range: the packaging, because a dearer candle is expected to arrive in something better, and the outbound courier, because sets weigh more. Fill them in before you conclude that ₹54.08 is the whole difference between the two SKUs.

The first is the wax: Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 is ₹650.00 a kilogram in the 1 kg pack and ₹637.00 in the 5 kg pack, which on 200 g is ₹2.60 a candle — small, real, and available on every SKU in the range rather than only the premium one. The second is delivery: the 100gm pack of White Royal Oud stores a packed weight of 0.5 kg and the cheapest published band covering it in September 2026 is ₹80.00 on Standard Shipping. Bring the oil in with a wax order rather than on its own and that band is paid once instead of twice. Rates are the published flat bands as at September 2026 and can change.

Finally, the thing this page deliberately does not do. It does not tell you what to charge. It gives you the material gap, the two targets that gap implies against a price you supply, the cost of rounding to a real point, and the arithmetic of hiding the premium inside a set. Whether your customer will pay ₹949.00 for a candle that looks identical to a ₹899.00 one is a question about your brand and your market, and the only people who can answer it are you and the person holding the candle.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells oud and sandalwood fragrance oils, and this page still says that one of the two scents in your question does not justify a price change at all: Sandalwood adds ₹4.91 to the candle, which is 1.11% of it, and charging a premium for that is a marketing decision rather than a cost-led one. It also says that the largest line in this candle is the vessel — the Premium Glass Clip Top Container at ₹229.00 is more than the wax and more than the fragrance in every column except the oud — so a maker who wants a genuinely dearer product has a bigger lever in the glass than in the bottle. And contribution is not profit: every figure here still has to cover costs CSI does not sell.

Every CSI price here is live stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, as CSI product pages state it; the costing unit is 200 g of wax plus 16 g of oil at 8%, 216 g poured, held identical across every scent so that only the fragrance line moves. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 states a fragrance load of up to 13% of total wax weight, a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C; White Royal Oud states 6–10% of total wax weight and IFRA certification; Sandalwood states soy use up to 10% of total wax weight, a flash point of 203°C and 0% vanillin; Verbena states up to 10% for soy wax, a flash point of 200°C and 0% vanillin. Where a wax maximum and an oil range differ, the lower governs, so 10% is the ceiling on all three pairings and 8% sits inside it. Retail prices, contributions and the price points on this page are illustrative and are labelled as such; CSI gives no pricing, tax or licensing advice and points you to your own adviser. Labels, boxes, courier to your own customer, gateway and marketplace fees, labour, electricity and rent are not CSI products and are left blank throughout.

Frequently asked questions

How much more does an oud candle cost to make than a standard one?
On live CSI rates in September 2026, ₹54.08 on a 200 g candle at 8% — ₹494.50 against ₹440.42. The difference is entirely the 16 g of fragrance: White Royal Oud at ₹8.10 a gram against Verbena at ₹4.72. Wax, vessel and wick are the same ₹364.90 in both.
Is sandalwood expensive enough to justify its own price?
On these rates, no. Sandalwood adds ₹4.91 to the candle, which is 1.11% of it. If you price a sandalwood candle higher, you are pricing for positioning rather than for cost, which is a legitimate choice as long as you know which one you are making. Other sandalwood-family oils on the same list do cost more — the table above spans ₹4.53 to ₹9.12 a gram.
Should I add the material gap to my price, or a percentage?
The gap, if you want to hold the same rupees of contribution: an illustrative ₹899.00 range price becomes ₹953.08. A percentage target is a different answer — to hold 51.01% of price you need ₹1,009.39, ₹56.31 more. Percentages borrowed from the oil itself are the one thing not to use: the oil is dearer per gram, but the candle it goes into costs 12.3% more, not 70%.
What happens if I keep one price across the whole range?
The oud SKU contributes less. At an illustrative ₹899.00 a range candle leaves ₹458.58 and the oud candle leaves ₹404.50, a shortfall of ₹54.08 every time one sells. That can be a deliberate choice — a hero scent that brings people in — but it should be a choice with a figure attached: at 120 oud candles a month it is ₹6,489.60.
Does the fragrance load change the answer?
It scales it. The gap is 16 g × the rate difference, so at 10% of a 200 g wax pour it would be 20 g and the gap would be a quarter larger. Check the ceilings first: Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 states up to 13% of total wax weight, White Royal Oud states 6–10% and Sandalwood states soy use up to 10%, and the lower of the wax maximum and the oil range governs — so 10% is the ceiling here and 8% sits inside it.
Is contribution the same as profit?
No, and treating it as profit is the fastest way to misprice a premium SKU. Contribution here is price less materials from CSI. Your label, box, ribbon, outbound courier, gateway fee, labour, electricity and rent all come out of it, and on a gifting SKU the packaging line is usually the largest of them. Those rows are blank on this page because CSI does not sell them and will not invent a figure for them.
