Should I Run a 5 Kg or 10 Kg Production Trial Before Committing to a 100 Kg Soy Wax Purchase?
शेयर करना
How many candles does a 5 kg batch make? About 25 candles of 200 g at 8% with a 5% allowance.
What does the trial really cost? The candles burned or held back: about ₹4,804.49 of materials for 10 kg, ₹2,402.24 for 5 kg. The rest are saleable if it passes.
Should I buy the 10 kg Chunks bag? No — 2 × 5 kg is ₹5,990.00, the 10 kg bag ₹5,999.00.
The short answer: size the trial to your batch, then double it
By the time you ask this question you have already shown the wax works on the bench — the step after a successful kilo sets that out. What a production trial must prove is different: that your process, at your real batch size, makes the same candle every time. That gives a simple sizing rule. The trial must be at least one full production batch, because a smaller melt does not test heat-up, stirring or the temperature of the last jars poured. And it should ideally be two batches on two different days, because one good batch can be luck; two that match are a process.
So the choice between 5 kg and 10 kg depends on how much you melt at once. If your normal batch is about 5 kg or less, a 5 kg trial is one batch and a 10 kg trial is two — choose 10 kg. If your normal batch is already 10 kg (for example in a 10 kg electric melter), a 5 kg trial cannot test your process at all — choose 10 kg as your minimum, and consider 20 kg for a second day. Only if you pour very small batches and have little time would a single 5 kg trial be a reasonable floor. At 200 g candles and 8% load, one 5 kg batch makes about 25 candles with a 5% allowance.
Price is not the deciding factor here, and that is worth saying plainly. On CSI's list the trial wax costs the same per kilo as the 100 kg order you are preparing for: Chunks ₹599.00 a kilo in 5 kg bags, CSI 468 ₹637.00 a kilo at 5 kg and 10 kg. And most trial candles are not a cost at all — if the trial passes, they go on sale. The real cost is the handful of candles you burn and the few days you wait.
5 kg and 10 kg trials, side by side
The table compares the two trial sizes for a maker preparing a 100 kg order, using 200 g candles at 8% and a 5% allowance. Burned candles are the first, middle and last poured plus one full-life candle per batch, each beside a control from your retained, qualified wax. One candle per batch is kept back for the shelf. Everything else is saleable once the trial passes.
| 5 kg trial | 10 kg trial | |
|---|---|---|
| Batches | 1 | 2, on different days |
| Trial candles | 25 | 50 |
| Burned beside controls | 4 (+ 4 controls) | 8 (+ 8 controls) |
| Shelf candles | 1 | 2 |
| Saleable if it passes | 20 | 40 |
| Oils tested at scale | 1 | 2 |
| Repeatability (day to day) | Not shown | Shown |
| Pour-order drift (first vs last jar) | Shown for one batch | Shown twice |
| Share of the 100 kg order | 5% | 10% |
| Chunks wax | 1 × 5 kg ₹2,995.00 | 2 × 5 kg ₹5,990.00 |
| CSI 468 wax | 1 × 5 kg ₹3,185.00 | 1 × 10 kg ₹6,370.00 |
The extra five kilos buy the two things a 100 kg order most needs. The first is repeatability: if batch B on day two matches batch A on day one, your process is stable across the things that change day to day — room temperature, the time you start, who pours. The second is breadth: a second oil at production scale. This example pours Japanese Cherry Blossom on day one and Peach Melon Berry on day two. If your range leans on a heavier oil — a vanilla or a gourmand — use that as the second, because it is the one most likely to behave differently. When a wax works with one oil but not another explains why.
Matching the trial to how you actually melt
Most small workshops melt in one of three ways: a pot or jug on a double boiler, a small electric melter, or a larger electric melter. CSI lists a 1-litre Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360.00) and an Electric Wax Melter in 10 kg (₹21,240.00) and 20 kg (₹25,960.00) capacities; melter throughput per hour is not published, so time your own. Whatever you use, your trial batch should be the size you will pour on a normal production day.
| Your normal batch | Typical equipment | Trial | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to about 2–3 kg | Pot / jug or 1-litre melter, several melts a day | 5 kg as two half-days, or 10 kg as two days | Several small melts already test repeatability; 10 kg adds a second oil |
| About 5 kg | Several jugs or a mid-size melter | 10 kg = two 5 kg batches on two days | One batch per day; two days show repeatability |
| About 10 kg | 10 kg electric melter | 10 kg minimum; 20 kg for a second day | A 5 kg trial would not fill your melter |
| About 20 kg | 20 kg electric melter | 20 kg, ideally twice | The trial must match the batch |
If the last line applies to you, the trial is a bigger share of the 100 kg order — 20 kg is a fifth of it — and that is fine, because the trial candles are saleable. Process tolerance as a wax criterion and precise versus forgiving pour temperatures cover what to watch in the batch itself, and testing at your real workshop temperature covers the room.
The trial protocol, day by day

What each trial costs — and what it gives back
Here are both trials priced in full with CSI packs: wax, the oils for trial and control candles from the same lot, wicks and jars. Control wax comes from your retained stock. The more useful number is the last one in each column: the material value of the candles that are burned or held back, which is the trial's real cost if it passes.
| Item | 5 kg trial | 10 kg trial |
|---|---|---|
| Chunks wax | 1 × 5 kg · ₹2,995.00 | 2 × 5 kg · ₹5,990.00 |
| Japanese Cherry Blossom | 1 × 500 g · ₹2,500.00 | 1 × 500 g · ₹2,500.00 |
| Peach Melon Berry | — | 1 × 500 g · ₹2,088.60 |
| Eco Thin C1 wicks | 29 · ₹177.00 | 58 · ₹354.00 |
| White Matte jars | 6 packs · ₹2,124.00 | 12 packs · ₹4,248.00 |
| Total bought | ₹7,796.00 | ₹15,180.60 |
| Same trial in CSI 468 | ₹7,986.00 | ₹15,560.60 |
| Material value burned or held back (trial + controls) | ₹2,402.24 | ₹4,804.49 |
| Saleable candles if it passes | 20 | 40 |
At ₹266.92 of materials per candle (Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, Cherry Blossom at its 500 g rate, ₹5.90 wick, ₹70.80 jar — before labour, packaging, freight and GST), the 10 kg trial's true cost is about ₹4,804.49, against ₹2,402.24 for 5 kg. The difference — ₹2,402.24 — is what repeatability and a second oil cost you. Set against a 100 kg order of Chunks (₹59,900.00) or CSI 468 (₹63,700.00), that is the cheapest insurance in the whole purchase.

Both are candidates you might be scaling up, not ranked choices. CSI publishes no data that makes one perform better than the other; your trial decides it for your candle.

The decision rule
| If… | Run | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Your production batch is about 5 kg (the common case) | 10 kg trial: two batches, two days, two oils | Chunks 2 × 5 kg (₹5,990.00) or CSI 468 1 × 10 kg (₹6,370.00) |
| Your production batch is 10 kg | 10 kg minimum; 20 kg if you can | Same packs, doubled for 20 kg |
| Very small batches, one oil, little time | 5 kg trial as a floor — note that repeatability is untested | Chunks 1 × 5 kg (₹2,995.00) |
| Bench qualification not yet done | Do that first | The 1 kg → 100 kg post |
| Trial passes on every line, A matches B | Order the 100 kg | Chunks ₹59,900.00 · CSI 468 ₹63,700.00 |
For the reader who asked: run the 10 kg trial unless your batches are tiny. In Luxury Soy Wax Chunks buy 2 × 5 kg (₹5,990.00); in CSI 468, 1 × 10 kg (₹6,370.00). Pour two batches on two days with two oils, burn the first, middle and last of each beside controls, take one to the end of its life, and only then commit to 100 kg. When the order arrives, give it the delivery check in the first-carton post; the 92 kg post then sizes the order itself.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Here we advise against our own 10 kg Chunks bag (two 5 kg bags are cheaper) and against ordering 100 kg before a trial, because we publish no burn or lot data that could replace one.
