Jar QC · base thickness
A thicker base rarely changes the middle of a burn. It can change your fill line, your wick seating and the last 2 cm, so check those three before release.
12.9 ml
less room inside a 64 mm jar when the base is 4 mm thicker
Quick answers — read this first
Does a thicker jar base affect a candle? Mostly at the pour and near the end. It raises the fill line, can tilt the wick if the floor slopes, and holds more heat in the final 2 cm.

How do I measure a jar's base thickness? Subtract the internal depth, measured with a caliper depth rod from rim to floor, from the outer height. Repeat near the wall to check the floor is level.

How can I sort a whole shipment quickly? Weigh empty jars against a reference. Extra base glass adds noticeable weight, roughly 32 g for a 4 mm disc on a 64 mm floor.

What should I do with thick-base jars? Run an end-of-life burn comparison. Release if they match, quarantine if they run hotter, lean or have a sloping floor.
The short answer
Where it matters: Fill height, wick seating and the final 2 cm of burn, rather than the main body of the candle.
Check: Outer height minus internal depth gives base thickness; three depth readings near the wall show whether the floor slopes.
Decision: Accept standard bases, conditionally release level thick bases after an end-of-life test, quarantine sloping floors.

Straight answer
Some Jars in My Shipment Have Noticeably Thicker Bases — Could This Affect Heat Distribution Near the End of the Candle?
It can, but mainly near the end and at the pour, not through the middle of the burn. When the flame is within the last couple of centimetres, a thicker base absorbs more heat and releases it slowly, and if the inner floor slopes, the wick tab tilts and the flame can drift towards the glass. A raised floor also lifts your fill line and reduces headspace. Measure base thickness as outer height minus internal depth, weigh empty jars to sort the shipment, and run a supervised end-of-life burn with thick-base and standard jars side by side. Release the thick-base jars only if they behave the same through the final 2 cm.
One line: measure and weigh to sort the thick-base jars, check the floor is level, and compare them to standard jars through the last 2 cm of burn.
A digital scale at ₹354.00 turns base-thickness sorting into a quick weighing job across the whole shipment.

What a thicker base can and cannot do to your candle

A thick base is easy to spot and easy to overthink. Measure it, weigh it, then burn one to the end.

Heavy-bottomed jars are common, and within one shipment some can come out of the mould with noticeably more glass at the bottom than others. You have noticed it because the jars feel different in the hand, or because the inside looks shallower when you look straight down. The question is whether that extra glass changes anything that matters once a candle is poured and burned.

The honest answer is that a thicker base usually has a modest effect on the main part of the burn, where the flame sits well above the floor. Where it can matter is at the two ends of the candle's life: at the pour, because a raised inner floor changes fill height and wick seating, and at the finish, when the flame is close to the glass and the base is absorbing and holding heat.

What changes
Effects of extra base glass on a container candle
Stage Possible effect How significant
Pouring by weight Inner floor is higher, so a fixed wax weight sets higher and headspace shrinks Directly measurable, often a few millimetres
Wick seating If the floor is not level, the wick tab sits tilted and the wick leans Can move the flame off centre for the whole burn
Main burn Flame is well above the floor; base thickness has little influence Usually small
Last 2 cm Flame is close to the glass; a thicker base absorbs more heat and releases it slowly Worth observing in a supervised end-of-life burn
After extinguishing A thick base can stay warm longer, keeping the surface under the jar warm Relevant to your customer safety advice

Measuring base thickness without breaking a jar

You cannot put a caliper through the bottom of a jar, but you can calculate the base thickness from two easy readings. Measure the outer height of the jar from the table to the rim, then use the depth rod of your caliper to measure the internal depth from the rim down to the centre of the inner floor. The difference is the base thickness at the centre.

Then take the internal depth again at three points near the wall, roughly evenly spaced. If those three readings differ from each other by more than a millimetre or so, the floor slopes, and a wick tab placed on it will not stand upright without help. Treat that 1 mm as a suggested starting point to check against how your wick sits in practice.

A faster sort for the whole shipment
Glass is heavy, so extra base glass shows up on a scale. As a general figure, glass weighs roughly 2.5 g per cubic centimetre. A disc of extra glass 4 mm thick across a 64 mm floor is about 12.9 cm³, or roughly 32 g. A difference that large is easy to see when weighing empty jars, which lets you sort a full shipment far faster than measuring every jar with a caliper. CSI does not publish jar weights, so the comparison is always against your own reference jars.

Worked example: sorting 300 jars with mixed bases

Say your reference jar has an outer height of 80 mm and an internal depth of 73 mm, so the base is about 7 mm at the centre. In a delivery of 300 jars, you measure a suggested starting sample of 30 across all cartons and find 8 with an internal depth of 69 mm, meaning a base of about 11 mm. Treat these as example figures of the kind you would measure yourself.

With an internal diameter of 64 mm, the lost volume is π × 32 × 32 × 4 mm = 3.1416 × 1,024 × 4 = 12,868 mm³, about 12.9 ml less room inside. Fill by weight and the wax surface sets about 4 mm higher in those jars. If your usual headspace is 15 mm, the thick-base jars leave only 11 mm below the rim, which may bring a trimmed wick close to the lid.

Eight out of 30 in the sample is too many to ignore, so it is worth sorting the full 300. Weigh every jar against your reference weight, set aside any that are roughly 25 g or more heavier (a suggested starting threshold for a jar of this size), and confirm a few of those with the depth rod. That turns a vague feeling into two labelled groups.

The end-of-life test that answers the heat question

The only way to learn whether the thicker base changes heat behaviour near the end is to burn candles to the end in both kinds of jar, side by side. You are comparing the two groups, not proving anything about glass in general.

1
Pour a matched pair or two.Use two standard-base and two thick-base jars. Keep wax, fragrance, load, wick, pour temperature and cure identical. Mark each jar on its base with a marker so you cannot confuse them later.
2
Seat the wicks carefully. In the thick-base jars, check the wick stands vertical after the pour. If it leans, that is a result in itself: the floor is not level and the tab is tilting.
3
Burn through the main life normally.Use your usual burn cycles with full cooling between. Differences here are likely to be small; record them anyway.
4
Watch the final 2 cm closely. This is where the comparison matters. Note flame height, whether the wick stays centred, how the glass looks, and how long the base stays warm after extinguishing. Stop with around 1 cm of wax left, which is the common guidance for container candles.
5
Stay with every test.Never leave a test burn unattended, place test candles on a heat-resistant surface, and extinguish any candle that smokes, flares or shows the flame drifting towards the glass.

Pre-cut wicks deserve a thought here too. A ready-made wick has a fixed length from the tab, so when the floor rises by 4 mm, the top of the wick rises with it. After trimming, that usually makes no difference, but on a jar with tight lid clearance it can mean the untrimmed wick is bent by the lid in storage. Check a thick-base candle with its lid on before you pack a batch of them.

If both groups behave the same through the final 2 cm, the thick-base jars can be released, with a note of their higher fill line and a check on lid clearance. If the thick-base candles run noticeably hotter, lean, or leave the base uncomfortably warm for much longer, keep them out of production for that product and speak to the supplier.

Recording the result and raising it with the supplier

Write the base readings into the shipment record, along with the count in each group and the decision for each. Keep one jar from each group aside, labelled with the invoice number and date received, as physical references for the next order. If a large share of a shipment has a sloping floor, that is a manufacturing matter to raise, not something to fix with wick stickers and hope.

For CSI jars, send photographs and your readings on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) and ask whether the glass has changed. CSI does not publish base thickness, jar weight or dimensional tolerances, so treat any answer as information to record rather than a guarantee. Your own measurements and end-of-life results are the evidence that decides whether those jars reach the pouring line.

A last practical point: variation you can see is usually the easiest kind to manage, because you can sort it. The shipments to worry about are the ones nobody looked at closely enough to notice.

Argue against interest
Sort the variation you can see instead of pouring it blind.
A shipment with mixed bases can still be used if you separate and test it. If a large share has sloping floors, that is for the supplier to answer, including when the supplier is us.
The middle of the candle forgives the base; the last two centimetres do not.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general quality-control practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly what CSI does not publish (lot numbers, certificates of analysis, tolerances), and labels every sample size, tolerance or retained quantity as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from September 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a lot number, a jar's internal diameter or a wick's burn rate — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some candle jars have thicker bottoms?
Glass forming varies, and some jar styles are designed with heavy bases. Within one shipment, jars from different moulds or runs can differ. Measure and sort rather than assume. A retained reference jar makes the comparison easy.
Can a thick jar base make the candle overheat at the end?
A thicker base absorbs more heat and releases it slowly, so the base can stay warm longer. Compare thick and standard jars in a supervised end-of-life burn before release. Stop any test that smokes or flares.
Why is my wick leaning in some jars?
A sloping inner floor tilts the wick tab. Check internal depth at three points near the wall. If they differ noticeably, quarantine those jars or use a wick holder while the wax sets.
How much wax is left when I should stop burning a jar candle?
Common general guidance is to stop with around 1 cm of wax remaining. Include that advice in your customer instructions and follow it in your own end-of-life tests. It protects the base glass from direct flame heat.
Should I fill thick-base jars with less wax?
If you fill by weight, the surface sits higher. Check lid clearance and headspace. You can keep the weight and accept a higher line, or adjust, but record the decision.
Does CSI publish base thickness or jar weights?
No. CSI does not publish base thickness, jar weights or tolerances. Measure your own reference jars and ask on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) if you need information. Keep the readings with each shipment's goods-in record.
