Wax vs Wick vs Fragrance Oil — What Is Actually Causing Weak Hot Throw?

How do I actually find out? Pour four pairs of jars in one session from one recipe. Pair one is the control. Each other pair changes exactly one thing: the wax, the wick, or the oil. Cure them together, burn them on the same day, score them blind.
Why not compare everything at once? Because three waxes × three wicks × three oils is 27 combinations, or 54 jars at two per combination — roughly ₹10,199 of materials and a month of burning. Four arms answer the same question with eight jars.
What if two arms both improve? Then you have two real levers and a ranking problem, and you rank them by permanent cost per candle: ₹0 for cure, ₹3.54 for a thicker wick, ₹4.19 for a richer wax, ₹45.81 for a dearer oil on a 120 g candle.
Why "I changed a few things and it got better" proves nothing
Weak hot throw has a short list of plausible causes and a long history of being fixed by accident. The accident is the problem. If you switch wax, step up a wick size and try a new oil in the same batch, and the candle is better, you now own a recipe you cannot economise on, cannot reproduce if one item goes out of stock, and cannot explain to anyone. You have bought an outcome without buying the knowledge.
The maths of comparing everything is worth seeing once, because it explains why nobody does it properly. Three waxes, three wicks and three oils is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 combinations. At the minimum two jars per combination — one jar is an anecdote — that is 54 jars. Using the control recipe below at ₹188.87 of materials per 120 g candle, that is ₹10,198.98 of wax, oil, glass and wick, plus 54 curing slots and something like 54 burn sessions of two to three hours. No small Indian candle business is going to do that, which is why the industry runs on folklore instead.
The alternative is not a smaller version of the same idea. It is a different idea: do not compare options, compare against a control. You are not trying to find the best wax, the best wick and the best oil. You are trying to find out which one is currently costing you throw. That question needs one arm per suspect, and it needs the arms to be otherwise identical — same jar diameter, same load to the gram, same add temperature, same stir time, same pour day, same cure length, same burning room, same scorer.
Read the symptom before you pick a suspect
Before you pour anything, spend an evening observing the candle you already have. Different causes leave different fingerprints, and two of them are visible without a single new purchase. This is triage, not proof: it tells you which arm to run first, and occasionally it makes an arm unnecessary.

What the test costs — and what each verdict costs afterwards
Two separate numbers, and makers routinely confuse them. The first is what the investigation costs once. The second is what living with its answer costs every month. The second is always larger, and it is the one that should set your standard of proof.

That table is the real argument of this page. The oil verdict is roughly thirteen times the wick verdict per candle, and it is the one makers reach for first, because a new bottle feels like progress in a way that waiting a fortnight does not. Work up the table, not down it. And notice the load row: raising load from 8% to 10% on a 120 g candle adds ₹15.04 of oil net of the wax it displaces — real money, but legitimate if you are currently below the range your wax page states. Every wax states its own number, and more oil is not automatically more throw.
Choosing the three swaps
A swap is only useful if it is a real alternative you would be willing to keep. Swapping in something you would never buy again tells you nothing you can act on. These are the four products in our worked control and its arms, with what their pages state and what each one costs inside a 120 g candle at 8%.

Why the wax arm is never a perfectly clean swap
A wick is not a fixed object; it is a fixed object in a specific wax. Move the same wick into a different wax and its behaviour changes, because the wax decides how much heat is needed and how the liquid feeds the flame. The stated figures make this concrete. Eco Soy CSI 400 states a "Melt Point 100°F (37.8°C)". Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states a "Melting Point 80°C – 90°C" — its page gives the same band for melting and pouring, which is unusually high for a soy wax and worth confirming with the page before you rely on it. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states "Melting Point 50°C – 53°C" and a pour of 58–60°C. Those are different working ranges, and a wick that opened the pool in one of them is not assured of opening it in another.
There is a second confound worth naming. Waxes differ in what load they state they will hold: Chunks state "8% to 13% of total wax weight" with "10% Recommended"; CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%"; CSI 468 states "Up to 13%"; Eco Soy CSI 400 and Natural Soy Pearl state nothing at all. If you run your wax arm at 8%, every wax in the comparison is inside its own stated range and the comparison is fair. If you run the arm at 12%, you are comparing one wax inside its range with another outside it, and any difference you see is contaminated. Hold the load at a figure every arm is allowed to carry.
Reading the four scores
You will end up with four numbers per scoring point and a lot of temptation. Read the pattern, not the highest single score. There are only five patterns that matter, and each one has a different next step.

Write the conclusion down in one line per arm, with the numbers attached: wax, oil, load, wick, jar diameter, add temperature, pour temperature, cure days, pool width at 2 hours, pool area, score at 30 and 120 minutes. That single line is what turns an evening of burning into an asset. Without it you will run this test again next year, because a result you cannot find is a result you do not have.
