How much fragrance oil is too much? Anything above the lower of two published figures: the wax grade's stated maximum and the oil page's stated candle range. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10% of total wax weight; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13%. On 200 g of wax those are 20 g and 26 g of oil.
Can you fix a candle with too much fragrance oil? You cannot take oil out, but you can add wax. A 2 kg batch carrying 260 g of oil is at 13%; adding 600 g more wax brings it to 10% and costs ₹304.44 on CSI 464. You get more candles than you planned rather than fewer — the oil is not lost, only spread.
Does more fragrance oil make a candle smell stronger? Only up to the point the wax can hold and the pool can release. Past that the extra oil sits in the wax or on the surface instead of leaving the melt pool, so you pay ₹29.74 a candle with Blue Ocean for a difference most customers cannot name (why more oil does not mean stronger).
What “too much” means, and why it is not a feeling
There is no universal figure for too much fragrance oil, which is why the question is so often answered badly. There is a figure for your batch, and it comes from two places: the maximum the wax grade is formulated to hold, and the candle range the oil is sold for. Both are printed. The lower one governs, every time. Twenty-four grams of oil in 200 g of wax is 12% — comfortably inside the stated maximum on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks if the oil page also reaches 12%, and two full points above the figure on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 no matter which oil you use. Same grams, same jar, different verdict.

The second route into an over-load is arithmetic rather than ambition. CSI's pages state load as a percentage of total wax weight, and some makers calculate against the finished candle instead. The gap is not academic: 8% of a finished candle is 8.7% of the wax, and 13% of a finished candle is 14.9% of the wax — well above every maximum in the catalogue. If you inherited a recipe from a supplier who used the other convention, convert it before you pour it, not after.
What actually happens, in the order it happens
In the pitcher, and at the pour
Melted wax will take up oil to a point and no further. Below the limit, a slow two-minute stir at 80–90°C — the window the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for — gives you a single uniform liquid. Above it, the last of the oil refuses to disappear into the melt: you see a slick that reassembles after the spoon passes, or a faint separate layer when the pitcher rests. Pouring anyway simply moves the problem into the jar, where it lands as an oily sheen on the surface while the wax sets. This is the earliest and cheapest moment to catch an over-load, because nothing has been wicked or labelled yet.
The first 48 hours
As soy crystallises it pushes out whatever it cannot hold. On an over-loaded jar that shows as beads on the cured top, a ring of oil at the glass, or a surface that stays faintly tacky when a dry one should feel dry. Run a clean fingertip across the top at 48 hours — the check takes two seconds and it is the single most useful habit in this whole cluster. A damp top at 48 hours on a jar that was poured cleanly is a load problem until proven otherwise.
Days 3 to 14
Surplus oil is a plasticiser. It keeps the wax softer than the grade intends, which is why an over-loaded jar develops a top you can mark with a fingernail, edges that lift away from the glass, and a dull, patchy look through the side of a clear jar. Soy is prone to some of this anyway — frosting and wet spots have their own causes — but an over-load makes all of them worse and adds one they cannot explain: a candle that looks wetter at day 10 than it did at day 2.
The first burn, and hour three
This is where the money is lost, because by now the candle is wicked, jarred, labelled and often sold. A wick is sized for a particular wax at a particular load; feed it a pool carrying more liquid than it was chosen for and the flame sits low and shivers, the pool goes deep instead of wide, and the wick can drown outright. A candle that extinguishes itself in a customer's living room is not a fragrance complaint, it is a refund. What does not drown often runs rich instead: an unstable flame, soot climbing the inside of the glass, and a mushroom of carbon on the wick tip that has to be trimmed every hour. Neither symptom is fixed by the oil, and both look to the buyer like a cheap candle.

What an over-load costs, counted properly
Three separate costs sit inside an over-load, and most makers only count the first. There is the oil itself, which is easy arithmetic. There is the batch that has to be reworked or written off, which carries wax, wick, jar, labels and your afternoon. And there is the one nobody invoices: a customer who lights a candle that dies at hour two and quietly stops ordering. Only the first two can be tabled, so here they are.

Now the write-off. A single 200 g candle on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 10% with Blue Ocean, one Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) and a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) costs ₹300.90 in materials. A batch of fifty that cannot be shipped is ₹15,045.00 before labels, packaging or the hours you spent on it — against ₹1,486.80 for the surplus oil that caused it. That ratio is the whole argument for weighing carefully: the oil is never the expensive part of the mistake.
And the cruellest line in the ledger is that you usually paid for a weaker candle. Fragrance reaches a room from the melt pool, so anything that shrinks the pool — a drowning wick, a flame that cannot reach the glass — reduces throw no matter how much oil is in the wax. That is why over-loaded candles so often read as flat rather than strong (can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker). If your candle is at or below the governing figure and still smells thin, the cause is somewhere else entirely — pool, cure, wick or the oil's own character.
How to rescue an over-loaded batch
The arithmetic is one line. Your batch holds a known weight of oil; the load you want is a percentage of wax weight; so the wax the batch needs in total is oil grams ÷ target load, and what you add is that total minus the wax already in the pot. A 2 kg melt carrying 260 g of oil is at 13%. At a 10% target it needs 2,600 g of wax, so you add 600 g — ₹304.44 of CSI 464. Nothing is thrown away: you end with 2,860 g of poured candle instead of 2,260 g, which is fourteen 200 g candles instead of eleven. The oil you paid for is still in the jars, just spread across more of them.
Take the oil grams and the wax grams from your batch card and divide: 260 ÷ 2,000 is 0.13, which is 13%. If you do not have a batch card, reconstruct it from the bottle — weigh what is left and subtract from what you started with. Do not estimate from memory, because the number you are about to correct is the number you got wrong the first time.
Read both pages again: the wax grade's stated maximum and the oil's stated candle range. Take the lower. Then aim a point below it rather than at it, so that the rework has some margin — targeting 9% on a pair that governs at 10% costs a few grams of extra wax and removes the risk of doing this twice.
Divide oil grams by the target to get the total wax needed, subtract what is already there, and weigh in the difference. Bring the melt back to the grade's working range — the Chunks page gives approximately 80–85°C for melting and asks for a slow two-minute stir when fragrance goes in — then pour at the grade's pour temperature, 75–80°C for Chunks. A Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 is the difference between a rework and a second failed batch.
The diluted batch is a new recipe: new load, new wick test, new cure. Pour a control jar at the target load alongside, check both tops at 48 hours, and burn test at day 14. Soy throw keeps developing for two to three weeks, so a rework judged on day three will read weak and send you straight back into the same mistake (why the 14-day cure matters).

Two limits on the rescue, stated plainly. First, dilution changes the product: at 10% instead of 13% the candle smells different, so the reworked jars are a new batch and should not be mixed into stock photographed and sold as the old one. Second, jars that are already poured and cured can be re-melted — that is ordinary practice, covered in re-melting a failed candle — but you lose the wicks, the labour and some of the jar labels, and you will need to add wax on top of what is already in the glass. If a customer order ships in four days there is no honest rework: cure time is not compressible, and a diluted batch poured on Tuesday is not a candle you can judge on Friday.
One index card per melt: date, wax grade and grams, oil name and grams, the load as a percentage, wick type, jar, pour temperature, and the two published figures you read it against. It takes forty seconds and it is the only thing that makes a rescue arithmetic possible three days later. It also turns a failure into information — without the card, an over-loaded batch teaches you nothing except that something went wrong.
Making an over-pour structurally impossible
An over-load is almost never a judgement error; it is a measurement or a record-keeping error dressed up as one. The controls below are cheap, and each removes one specific way the mistake happens. None of them requires you to become more careful, which is the point — careful is not a process.

One more control worth the trouble on a production line: buy the trial size before the kilogram. Most CSI oils start at 15 gm — Blue Ocean at ₹93.22, Roasted Coffee at ₹93.22, Apple Cinnamon at ₹93.22 — which is enough to pour a 150 g test jar at the load you intend and watch it for a fortnight. Finding an oil's practical limit in your jars on ₹93.22 of oil rather than on a ₹4,956.00 bottle is the cheapest insurance in candle making, and it is advice that costs us the larger sale.
Why an over-load shows itself faster in India
Heat is the accelerant. A candle carrying more oil than its wax can hold is already at its limit at room temperature; put it in a storeroom in Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur where afternoons pass 40°C, or in the back of a delivery van for three days, and the surplus separates out far sooner and far more visibly than it would in a cool workshop. Monsoon adds a second, more confusing problem: in Mumbai, Kochi or Kolkata a cool jar brought into humid air collects condensation, and a maker who has just read about over-loading will read that as sweating. Let jars come to room temperature before you judge a surface, and judge it with a fingertip rather than with a photograph.

The festive maths is unforgiving. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, and with a 14 to 21 day cure plus courier time, festive stock wants pouring by about mid-October. A batch poured on 15 October that beads at 48 hours can just about be diluted and re-poured; the same batch discovered at day 12 cannot. That is the practical reason to run the fingertip check at 48 hours on every batch in the festive season, even the recipes you have poured a hundred times — because the season is exactly when people scale up, switch to a bigger pitcher, and start weighing in kilograms instead of grams.
What is not too much — the honest counterweight
It is worth saying clearly, on a page that sells fragrance oil, that plenty of high loads are perfectly legitimate. Ten per cent on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks sits three points below the page's stated maximum. Eight per cent — 16 g on a 200 g candle — is inside every CSI oil range that publishes one. A candle is not over-loaded because it smells strong; it is over-loaded when it is above the lower of the two published figures, and the evidence is physical rather than olfactory: a damp top, a soft surface, lifting edges, a drowning wick. If none of those is present, the load is not your problem.
