Quick answers — read this first
What happens if I use too much fragrance oil? The wax cannot hold it, so it separates out. In order: a greasy or beaded surface, an oily ring where the wax meets the glass, seepage that leaves a film under the jar, then a wick drawing oil instead of wax — low flame, guttering, a pool that never reaches the wall, and a candle that smells oily rather than fragrant.

How much is "too much"? There is no universal figure. It is whatever sits above the load stated on your wax and your oil page — up to 10% on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 8–13% of total wax weight on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, and up to 10% for soy on most CSI oil pages.

Does it at least smell stronger? No — that is the cruel part. Oil that has separated out of the wax is not in the melt pool doing work; the full argument is in can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker.

Can I save the batch? Usually, with wax and a calculator. Add wax until the load falls back inside the stated figure: a 20-jar batch poured at 14% needs 960 g more wax — ₹911.90 with eight extra jars and wicks — and yields 28 compliant candles instead of 20 defective ones.
The short answer
The failure is physical, not moral: a wax is formulated to carry a certain quantity of oil in solution. Past that quantity the surplus is not held, and everything that goes wrong afterwards is that surplus finding a surface — the wax's top, the glass wall, the underside of the jar, the wick.
The symptoms arrive on a schedule: cloudiness or an oil layer at the pour, beading within 24 hours, a ring or seepage during the first fortnight, and burn faults only when someone lights it. The last one is the one your customer finds.
The salvage is dilution: oil ÷ target load = the total weight the batch has to become. Subtract what you already have and that is the wax to add. Re-melt inside your wax page's stated temperature band, re-wick, re-cure, and treat the result as a new recipe that needs a burn test.

What matters is the direction of travel: the further right you discover the problem, the more of your money is already committed — glass, wick, label, packaging and, at the far end, a customer's opinion of your brand.
Straight answer
What actually happens to a candle when there is too much fragrance oil in it?
The wax carries oil up to a point, and the number on your wax page is that point. Pour past it and the surplus is simply not carried: it moves while the candle cools and while it cures, and it ends up on whatever surface it can reach. In practice that is a sequence, not a single fault. At the pour the melt can look cloudy or show a separate layer that will not stir in. Within a day the surface beads or feels greasy to a fingertip. Across the first fortnight you get a darker ring where the wax meets the glass, and sometimes a film under the jar. When someone lights it the wick is drawing a liquid it was never sized for — a low or guttering flame, a pool that stalls well short of the wall, soot, and a smell that reads oily rather than fragrant. The load you were chasing is the one thing you do not get, because oil sitting on the surface or against the glass is not oil evaporating out of a melt pool — the point argued in full in can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker. The money is not trivial either. Eight grams of surplus oil in a 200 g candle — 14% on a wax whose page states up to 10% — is ₹54.94 a candle and ₹5,494.08 across a hundred at Sage and Cedarwood 1 kg pricing. Stated loads are formulation limits published by the maker of the wax, not regulatory limits: nothing stops you crossing one, and nothing rewards you for it either.
One line: surplus oil does not stay in the wax — it separates, sweats, seeps and drowns the wick, so you pay more per candle for a candle that performs worse.

"Too much" is a number on your wax bag, not a number from a maker group

The same 24 g of oil is comfortably inside one CSI wax's published band and a gram over another's. The bag decides, not the internet.

Every argument about overloading dies on this point: there is no universal maximum for "soy wax". A stated fragrance load describes one specific formulation. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states "up to 13% fragrance load capacity" and, in its own words, a "Recommended fragrance load: 8% to 13% of total wax weight" with "10% Recommended". Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states "Fragrance Load Up to 13%". Eco Soy CSI 400 states no load at all. Four waxes, four different answers to "am I overloading?" — which is why the useful version of this question is always "how many grams is too many in my jar".

So here it is in grams, because grams are what you weigh. The table takes a 200 g finished candle on the series convention — load as a share of the finished candle — and shows the surplus: oil above the stated figure, with nothing published to say the wax will carry it.

Worked out above: oil = 200 g × load. CSI 464 and CSI 468 state a percentage with no basis, so their ceilings are read on this series' convention — a share of the finished candle — giving 20 g and 26 g in a 200 g candle. Chunks states its band explicitly as "of total wax weight", so it converts: at 13% of wax weight a 200 g candle is 200 ÷ 1.13 = 176.99 g of wax and 23.01 g of oil, and at the 8% floor it is 185.19 g and 14.81 g. Read the stricter way — every stated percentage as a share of wax weight — the ceilings fall to 18.18 g on CSI 464 and 23.01 g on CSI 468, which is the conservative position and the one taken in can I use 12% fragrance oil in a candle. The second ceiling most makers never check. Your oil page publishes a candle rate of its own, and the one that binds you is whichever is lower. Sage and Cedarwood states "Up to 10% for soy wax" and "Up to 6% for paraffin wax" — so on a paraffin candle, 8% is already over that oil's published figure even though soy waxes routinely carry more. Two numbers, lower one wins, every time.

What the surplus oil actually does

A candle is a solid solution: fragrance oil dissolved into wax that has then set. While the wax is liquid it will accept a great deal of oil and look fine — which is why overloading is easy to do and hard to spot at the bench. The trouble starts as the wax cools and sets. Whatever the set wax cannot accommodate is left over, and left-over oil is mobile: it travels the path of least resistance — up to the surface, out to the cold glass, down through the wick's capillary path. That one mechanism explains all four classic faults, and why they look unrelated when they are not.

Two honest qualifications. None of these faults is exclusive to overloading: sweating also follows temperature cycling, a stalled pool can be an undersized wick, seepage can be a flaw in the glass. And the reverse does not follow either — one jar over the line may look perfectly respectable in a small vessel in a cool room. That is why the page's number beats the appearance of a single jar: you are not trying to get away with one pour, you are trying to produce two hundred that behave alike in a customer's flat in May.

Stated ceilings, stated precisely
The load figures quoted throughout this guide are the wax maker's and the oil supplier's own published figures — formulation guidance describing how much oil that material is built to carry. They are not regulatory limits and they are not safety certifications. The order the symptoms arrive in — and what each stage costs to discover

An overloaded candle is not a candle that fails. It is a candle that fails later, in someone else's living room.

The damage is a function of when you notice. A jug caught before pouring costs the oil. A jar caught at 24 hours costs the oil, the wax and the glass. A case caught after labelling costs all of that plus the packaging and the labour. A candle the customer catches costs you the customer. Discovery is the variable you can manage — with one sample jar poured ahead of the batch and inspected on a schedule rather than whenever you walk past.

Day 14 onward: a stress check, then the burnMove the sample to the warmest indoor spot you have for 48 hours — a closed cupboard on a sunny wall, never direct sun on glass — inspect again, then burn it three hours and record minutes to a full pool, flame behaviour, soot and mushrooming. Overloading usually shows in the burn column before the scent column, and mushrooming is one of the tells.
"It looked fine, so I poured the other ninety-nine." A 24-hour inspection is not a pass. Migration is slow and temperature-driven, and the Indian market punishes this specifically: a case that is clean in an air-conditioned workroom in February can sweat in a courier van in May. Judge a load on a jar you have kept for a fortnight, including one warm spell — not on the first evening, when the surface is still settling and everything is optimistic.

What an overloaded batch actually costs

Here is the part that changes habits. Overloading is not a free experiment that occasionally goes wrong — it is an extra cost per candle, paid up front, whether or not the candle turns out well. Now the batch view, because per-candle figures are easy to wave away. A hundred 200 g candles in CSI 464 with Sage and Cedarwood cost ₹22,868.40 in wax and oil at a 10% load. The same hundred poured at 14% cost ₹27,956.56₹5,088.16 more, because you buy 800 g more oil and 800 g less wax. If the batch survives, you have spent five thousand rupees on a load nobody asked for. If it does not, you have spent it on scrap.

Worked out above: oil per gram = ₹6.8676 (Sage and Cedarwood 1 kg ₹6,867.60 ÷ 1,000), ₹3.9648 (Chocolate Fudge 1,000 g ₹3,964.80), ₹5.20 (Lemongrass and Lime 1,000 g ₹5,200); wax per gram = ₹0.5074 (CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40). At 10%: 2,000 g oil (₹13,735.20) + 18,000 g wax (₹9,133.20). At 14%: 2,800 g oil (₹19,229.28) + 17,200 g wax (₹8,727.28). A 1 kg bottle yields 50 candles at 10% and 35 at 14% — so the same bottle buys you fifteen fewer candles.
Add the costs the spreadsheet forgets. Scrap is rarely just materials. Twenty 120 g jars poured at 14% and written off represent ₹2,307.51 of oil, ₹1,047.27 of wax, ₹944 of glass and ₹118 of wicks — ₹4,416.79 before you count labels, boxes, the bench hours, or the order you now cannot ship. The next section is how to avoid most of that.

The dilution maths that saves the batch

You cannot take oil out of wax. You can, however, add wax until the ratio is legal again — and the sum is one line long.

If a batch is over its stated load and has not yet been sold, the honest fix is arithmetic, not hope. The oil in the vessel is a fixed quantity; the load is that quantity divided by the total. So choose the load you should have poured, divide the oil by it, and that is what the batch has to weigh. The difference between that figure and what you currently have is the wax to add.

Read the first row again. ₹911.90 of wax, glass and wick converts twenty defective candles into twenty-eight compliant ones, against ₹4,416.79 of materials binned. Dilution is not a trick — it is the definition of a percentage, and it works because you already own the expensive half of the mixture.

Work out exactly how much oil is in the batchThe actual figure, not the intended one: jars × fill weight × the load you poured. Twenty 120 g jars at 14% is 2,400 g of candle holding 336 g of oil. Without a recorded load you cannot do this step at all — the strongest argument for a recipe card there is.

Know when to stop rescuingDilution fixes a ratio, not a candle already burnt, a jar that has sat in its own oil in a carton for a month, or a mixture you cannot account for because two batches were combined. If you cannot state the oil weight confidently, the batch becomes bench testers — not stock, and not a gift for a customer who will judge your brand by it.
The wax-melt route, honestly
Makers often hear "turn the failed batch into wax melts", and there is something in it: melts have no wick, so the drowning-wick failure disappears. Be precise about the rest. Several CSI oil pages do state a higher rate for melts than for candles — Chocolate Fudge, Lemongrass and Lime and Dark Vanilla Oud all state "6-10% for candles, 10-15% for wax melts". That relaxes the oil's ceiling; it does not relax your wax's. Above the wax's stated load a melt can still sweat and seep, so check both numbers before deciding the melt route has rescued anything.

Three oils and what their pages actually permit

The cheapest way never to overload is to buy oils whose pages tell you where the line is, and then work under it. All three below publish a candle rate, and all three price out very differently per gram — which is why the same 4 g mistake costs ₹15.86 on one and ₹27.47 on another. Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at a 10% load, so 20 g of oil, at 1 kg pricing.

States "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles, 10-15% for wax melts" and, on dosing, "Use a small amount for a subtle hint of chocolate or increase toward the upper end for a robust, dessert-like intensity" — a range with a purpose attached to each end, which is how a load figure should be read. Lemongrass and Lime
Light accords are the ones makers overdose, because a fresh top note reads quieter in the jar than a gourmand does. The page answers that directly: "6-10% of total wax weight for candles. 10-15% for wax melts. Use a lower percentage for a light citrus-herbal hint or increase toward the upper end for a bold" presence. The CSI principle
Oil that has left the wax is not fragrance any more. It is a cleaning job with a receipt.
Every rupee above the stated load buys you the same three things: a greasier candle, a less reliable burn and a thinner margin. The only version of "more fragrance" a customer can smell is more fragrance still dissolved in the wax when the wick lights.

Bench habits that make overloading impossible

Almost every overloaded batch is a measurement accident rather than a decision: a wax-weight percentage applied to a finished-candle recipe, a bottle poured by eye, a wax-melt rate read off an oil page, a batch topped up twice. The fixes are dull, cheap and permanent.

What happens if you put too much fragrance oil in a candle?
The wax cannot hold the surplus, so it separates out and migrates. You get some or all of: a layer that will not stir in at the pour, beading or a greasy film on the surface within a day, a darker ring where the wax meets the glass, seepage that leaves a film under the jar, and a wick drawing oil rather than wax — low flame, a pool that stalls short of the wall, soot and an oily smell. You also pay more per candle: 8 g of surplus in a 200 g candle is ₹54.94 on Sage and Cedarwood at 1 kg pricing.
How much fragrance oil is too much for soy wax?
Whatever is above the figure on your bag — there is no universal soy number. CSI 464 states up to 10%, so 22 g in a 200 g candle is already 2 g over. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states 8–13% of total wax weight with 10% recommended, which is a wider band on a different basis. Eco Soy CSI 400 states nothing, so treat 8% as a working reference there and earn any increase with your own test.
Can I fix a candle that has too much fragrance oil in it?
Yes, by dilution, provided you know how much oil is in the batch. Divide the oil weight by the load you should have used to get the total weight the batch must become, then add that much wax. Twenty 120 g jars poured at 14% hold 336 g of oil; 336 ÷ 0.10 = 3,360 g, so you add 960 g of wax — ₹487.10 on CSI 464 — and pour 28 candles instead of 20. Re-melt inside the wax page's stated temperatures, re-wick, re-cure, and re-test: a rescued batch is a new recipe.
Why is my candle sweating oil on the surface?
Overloading is the first thing to rule out, because surplus oil has to go somewhere and the top surface is the easiest route. But it is not the only cause: temperature cycling — a warm shelf, a courier van, an Indian summer — will surface a marginal load that looked fine in a cool workroom, and oil added to wax that was too cool may never have dissolved properly in the first place. Check the load against the stated figure first, then the storage, then the add temperature. Detail: why your candle is sweating fragrance oil.
Does too much fragrance oil make a candle burn badly or unsafely?
It certainly makes it burn unpredictably, which is reason enough to stay inside the stated figure. The wick was sized for a particular liquid, and an oil-rich pool is a different liquid: expect a flame that will not settle, a pool that stalls, soot and mushrooming. Because the behaviour changes, your existing burn test no longer applies — any change of load is a new wick test. Never sell candles from a batch whose burn you have not observed for three hours from a cold start.
Is it safe to go over the wax's stated fragrance load if my oil page allows more?
No — the binding figure is always the lower of the two. An oil page stating a 13% candle rate does not raise your wax's capacity to carry it, and a wax stating 13% does not override an oil that publishes 9%. Watch the row labels too: CSI oil pages commonly state 10–15% for wax melts and 10–30% for reed diffusers, and neither figure is a candle figure.
