What triggered it on that particular night? Almost always the workshop temperature swing — warm at pour, several degrees cooler by four in the morning. The surface partially re-crystallises, and you meet the result at breakfast.
When should I judge it? Not at six hours. Not at twenty-four. Forty-eight hours minimum for appearance, and a full 14–21 day cure before you judge scent.
Is it a fault? No. It does not affect burn, melt pool or fragrance throw. It is a cosmetic property of a natural wax, and the fix is method and storage, not a product.
Soy keeps changing after it sets
A candle maker's instinct is to treat "solid" as "done". Liquid wax goes into a jar, an hour or two later it is firm to the touch, six hours later it looks like a product, and the natural conclusion is that the process has ended. It has not. What has ended is the fast part — the change from liquid to solid. The slow part, in which the solid rearranges itself internally, runs for days and finishes long after the candle stops being interesting to watch.
Soy wax is a mixture of triglycerides, and triglycerides are polymorphic: the same molecule can stack into more than one crystal arrangement, and those arrangements have different densities, different melting behaviour and — the part that matters to you — different surface appearance. When wax cools quickly from pouring temperature, it does not have time to find the most stable arrangement. It settles into whichever form it can form fastest. That fast form is fine-grained and loosely packed, and a fine, loosely packed surface reflects light in one direction. That is your glossy top at hour six.
The fast form is not the stable form. Given time, the molecules reorganise into a denser, better-ordered arrangement, because that is the lower-energy state and matter drifts towards lower-energy states. Denser packing means the crystal domains get larger and the surface stops being optically uniform. Light hits it and scatters. You read scatter as "rough", "matte", "grainy" or "cloudy" — but you are reading a change in crystal packing, not damage. This is the same underlying property that produces frosting, which is why frosting and late-appearing surface texture so often show up on the same batch in the same week.
Three consequences follow, and they are the whole practical content of this page. First, an early surface is not evidence of anything — good or bad. A maker who pours at a new temperature, sees a beautiful top at hour six and concludes the new temperature works has learned nothing yet. Second, the change has a direction: it goes from glossy towards textured, essentially never the other way, so a candle that looks perfect early has room to get worse and a candle that looks textured early rarely improves. Third, the timeline is roughly predictable, which means you can build a schedule around it instead of being surprised by it.
One clarification worth making, because it saves people from chasing the wrong fault. This page is about the surface changing character — smooth to textured, glossy to matte. The overnight temperature swing is the usual trigger
Crystal conversion happens on its own schedule, but it is temperature-sensitive, and a candle sitting through a temperature swing converts differently from one held steady. This is why the change so reliably announces itself in the morning: the workshop was warm when you poured and several degrees cooler by four a.m., and the wax responded to that. In most Indian workshops the day-to-night swing is the largest single environmental variable a curing candle experiences, and almost nobody controls it.
The mechanism is simple enough. Warm wax near the surface stays slightly mobile — soft, not liquid, but not locked. As the room cools through the night, that partially mobile surface layer re-crystallises, and it does so at a temperature and a rate different from the original pour. You get a second crystallisation event on top of the first one, and the two do not produce identical surfaces. Where the swing is sharp, the difference is visible. Where the room is held steady, the conversion still happens, but it happens more evenly and reads as a gradual dulling rather than an overnight change.
A closed carton works for two reasons that are worth understanding separately. It blocks draughts, which cause uneven cooling across a single jar's surface. And it buffers the temperature swing itself: a stack of cardboard and jars has real thermal mass, so the wax inside experiences a slower, shallower version of whatever the room does. You are not trying to hold a fixed temperature. You are trying to remove the sharp edges from the curve.

One more note on the lid, because it is the mistake that most often masquerades as a wax problem. A warm jar with a lid on it is a sealed humid box. Water vapour condenses on the underside of the lid and on the coolest part of the wax, and the result is a cloudy or pitted surface that looks like a crystal fault but is not one. The test is simple: crystal texture is dry and even; condensation marks are localised, often circular, and frequently worse near the rim. Wait for cold glass. When to judge a candle
This is the section that changes how you work. Most surface complaints, most abandoned fragrance oils and most "this wax is inconsistent" conclusions come from judging a candle at the wrong point in its life. The candle was not inconsistent. It was unfinished, and it was assessed anyway.

Two numbers in that table do the heavy lifting. Forty-eight hours is the earliest point at which an appearance verdict is worth anything, because contraction has finished and the bulk of the visible crystal conversion has happened. Judging at six hours tells you about a transient state; judging at twenty-four catches the candle mid-change, which is precisely when it looks worst and when most panicked messages get sent. Fourteen to twenty-one days is the cure window for scent, and it is not optional if you sell on fragrance: cure times of 14–21 days reflect standard practice for soy container candles, and heavier gourmand, woody and oriental families sit at the top of that range.
What this means commercially
If you sell candles, the calendar above is not a curiosity. It is a production schedule, and getting it wrong costs money in three specific ways: photographs that overpromise, cartons packed before the surface settles, and stock dispatched before the scent is finished.
Photograph after the surface has settled, not on pour day. Pour day is when the candle is most photogenic and least representative. A listing image shot at hour six shows a glossy top that no customer will ever receive, because by the time the parcel is opened the candle is at day five or later. That gap is not a small aesthetic difference — it is the difference between "as pictured" and a return request. Shoot at day three or later, in the state the buyer will actually see, and the photograph becomes an asset instead of a liability. This matters more, not less, as you scale: at ten candles a week you can re-shoot; at several hundred orders a month your listing images are fixed and your production has to match them.
Pack after it settles too. A candle boxed at hour eight is boxed mid-conversion, with a lid trapping whatever warmth is left, and it finishes its crystal conversion inside a carton in a warehouse or a courier van — that is to say, in an uncontrolled temperature environment, which is exactly the condition this page has spent two sections telling you to avoid. There is a quieter commercial benefit as well. A maker who grades at forty-eight hours rejects fewer candles than one who grades at six, because at six hours you cannot tell a good candle from a bad one and you will throw away candles that were going to be fine. Every jar you re-pour unnecessarily costs wax, oil, a wick, the jar and the labour. Wax choice does change the surface — but it does not stop the clock
Different waxes convert differently and land on different final finishes. That is a legitimate reason to choose one wax over another, and it is worth being clear about what it does and does not buy you: a wax with a naturally smoother finish gives you a better final surface, not an earlier one. Is it a fault? No — and here is what to tell the customer
A textured, matte or grainy top on a soy candle is a cosmetic property of a natural wax. It does not affect how the candle burns, how the melt pool forms, or how much fragrance reaches the room. The wick does not care about crystal packing at the surface; within a few minutes of lighting, the surface you were worried about is a liquid pool and no longer exists. Cold throw is unaffected because the fragrance is distributed through the wax, not sitting on the top face. Burn time is unaffected. The candle is, in every functional sense, the candle you made.
This is worth being blunt about because the alternative — treating it as a defect — has real costs. Makers re-pour good stock, discard usable candles, switch waxes repeatedly in search of a finish that no natural soy wax holds permanently, and end up with an inconsistent product line and a smaller margin. The maker who understands the mechanism grades at forty-eight hours, ships the batch, and puts one sentence on the jar.
