Quick answers — read this first
What is the professional standard for a wick? A full melt pool that reaches the vessel wall in two to three hours, a clean flame with no soot on the glass, no mushrooming on the wick tip, and the same result on every unit you ship. Nothing less is a pass.

How do I find that wick? Burn three candidate sizes side by side in identical jars, same wax batch, same fill weight, fully cured, in 3–4 hour sessions, and write down what each one does at every session. The record sheet is further down this page.

How often do I have to re-test? Every time something in the recipe changes — new wax batch, different fragrance, a colour added, a new jar, a different fill weight. A wick belongs to a recipe, not to a jar.

What should I never do? Choose a wick on price. At CSI pricing the wick is roughly 2% of what a 200 g jar candle costs you in materials. Saving ₹3.54 on it while risking the other 98% is not a saving.

What a single line of a burn-test record looks like when you plot it. Three candidate sizes go into identical jars; the only thing that differs is the wick. The middle bar lands inside the 2–3 hour band and burns clean, so it becomes the standard for that recipe. The other two are not "bad wicks" — they are the wrong wicks for this wax, this fragrance and this jar, and either of them could be the right one for the next recipe you write.

What is the best candle wick for professional candle making in India?
There is no single best wick, and any page that names one is selling you something. The best wick is the one that produces a full melt pool at the vessel wall in two to three hours, with a clean flame, no soot, no mushrooming and no tunnelling — and does it on every unit in the batch. For most Indian container work that wick comes out of a three-way burn test between Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each and Cotton Braided Wicks at ₹12.00 each, with Performance Wooden Wicks as a separate decision for a different flame. Which of those wins is decided by your wax, your fragrance, your colour, your jar and your fill weight together — not by the jar diameter alone, which is the starting point covered in the sizing guide. What makes the choice professional rather than lucky is that you tested three sizes, wrote down what each one did, and filed that record against the recipe. Do that and you can reproduce the result next season. Skip it and you are re-guessing every time a supplier ships you a new batch of anything.
One line: the professional standard is a full pool at the wall in 2–3 hours, clean and repeatable — and the thing that makes it repeatable is the written test record, not the wick.

The standard a wick has to meet

A hobby wick has to work. A professional wick has to work the same way five hundred times, and you have to be able to prove it before the box leaves the workshop.

Write the standard down before you buy anything, because a test with no pass mark is just burning candles. The pass mark for a container candle is this: the melt pool reaches the vessel wall within two to three hours of lighting, the flame sits steady at roughly 25 to 35 mm, the glass stays clean, the wick tip stays free of carbon build-up, and the jar is warm rather than hot to the back of the hand. Every one of those is observable by eye in a single burn session, which is precisely why it is a workable standard for a workshop rather than a laboratory.

The two to three hour figure is not arbitrary. Most people light a candle for an evening, not for twenty minutes and not for eight hours, so the pool has to open inside a realistic first sitting. Open it faster and you are running the pool hotter than the wax wants, which is what produces soot on the glass, a shortened burn life and top notes cooking off in the first hour. Open it slower and the candle starts memorising a narrow pool — the ring of unmelted wax at the edge that never recovers, and which customers correctly read as a defect.

The four failure signatures, and what each one is telling you. Tunnelling — wax left clinging to the wall after three hours — means the wick is under-sized for this recipe, and no amount of customer instruction will fix it. Soot on the upper glass means the flame is consuming more fuel than it can burn cleanly; the wick is over-sized, or the fragrance load is sitting above what the wax holds. Mushrooming — a carbon ball on the wick tip that keeps returning after trimming — means the wick is drawing more fuel than the flame can process, usually over-sized, sometimes a fragrance or dye interaction. A pool deeper than about 13 mm with a jar you cannot hold means you are over-wicked even if everything else looks right, and that is a safety finding, not a cosmetic one.

Notice what is not on that list: the brand of wick, the fibre, the country of origin and the price. The standard is about the result in your specific recipe, and it is indifferent to everything else.

Where the diameter guide ends and this page begins
Jar diameter gives you a shortlist — which two or three sizes are even worth burning. That is a separate job and it has its own guide by diameter. This page assumes you have the shortlist and are deciding which of them ships. Diameter narrows the field; the burn test picks the winner; the record makes it repeatable.

The burn-test protocol, written as a procedure

This is the centrepiece of the page and the part most small makers skip. It takes about a fortnight of calendar time, four supervised evenings and roughly ₹2,458 of materials. Done once per recipe, it is the cheapest quality control available to a candle business.

Cure fully before you light anythingA candle tested at 48 hours is a different candle from the one your customer lights, because the wax crystal structure is still settling and the fragrance is still distributing. Give the test jars the same cure you give production — 14 days minimum, longer for heavy woody and gourmand oils — lids on, in a closed carton, at room temperature. Testing early is the single commonest way a workshop arrives at the wrong wick and then defends it for a year.

Burn in 3–4 hour sessions, not until they run outTrim to about 5 mm before every session with a wick trimmer at ₹295. Light all nine at once, in still air, away from a fan or a window, at roughly the ambient temperature your customers live in. The point is not neatness; the point is that in eight months, when a customer complains or a wax batch changes, you have a document that says what this recipe did the last time it was known to be correct.

Recipe name and number · wax and supplier batch · fragrance oil and load percentage · dye and dose · jar product and internal diameter · fill weight in grams · pour temperature · cure days completed · tester's name · date of each session. Without the header the results are unattributable and therefore worthless. This is the same discipline as a wax or fragrance goods-in check — the reasoning behind that one is in how to verify wax quality before you buy.

Four sessions produce fifty-two filled cells per wick. That sounds like a lot until you compare it with the alternative, which is a batch of two hundred candles going out on a wick that somebody remembers working once. The sheet also does something a memory cannot: it shows you drift across sessions. A wick that passes session one and starts mushrooming at session three has not suddenly gone wrong — it was marginal all along, and only four sessions revealed it. That is exactly the wick that will pass your test and fail in a customer's living room.

The CSI principle
What separates professional wicking from hobby wicking is not the wick. It is the record.
Two makers can buy the same wick, from the same shelf, on the same day. One of them can tell you in eight months exactly why that wick is in that candle, what it was tested against, and what changed the last time it stopped working. The other one is going to burn three more jars and hope. The wick costs ₹5.90 either way.

Why a wick that passed last season can fail this one

Nothing about the wick changed. Everything around it did.

This is the most expensive lesson in production candle making, and it usually arrives as a batch of complaints rather than as a warning. A recipe that was signed off in February starts tunnelling in September and nobody can explain it, because the wick in the jar is the same wick it always was. The wick is a component in a system, and the system has five other variables that all move.

The practical consequence is a filing rule: a wick belongs to a recipe, not to a jar. "C2 for the 70 mm jar" is not a specification. "C2 for recipe 14 — CSI 464 at 8%, Sandalwood, undyed, 70 mm white matte jar, 180 g fill, 14-day cure" is. Write the second one on the sheet, keep the sheet, and when the fragrance changes you will know immediately that the wick decision has expired.

There is a scheduling consequence too. If you are building a festive range for Diwali on 8 November 2026, the wick test has to finish before the production pour, and the test itself needs a 14-day cure before it can even start. Working backwards, a new recipe needs its wick settled roughly six weeks before the first production pour — which for Diwali means the testing was meant to happen in August. The same arithmetic applies to every deadline, and it is the part of scaling to 1,000 orders a month that catches people out.

Multi-wick candles: not two single-wick candles in one jar

Past a certain diameter a single wick cannot reach the wall in three hours without running so hot that it soots. In practice that limit sits somewhere around 80 mm of internal diameter for cotton wicks in soy, and it moves depending on the wax, the load and the wick. When you cross it, the answer is more wicks, not a bigger one — but the maths of a multi-wick candle is not additive and this is where most workshops get it wrong.

Why two wicks are not two candles. In a single-wick jar each flame heats only its own pool. In a two-wick jar each flame is also heating the other's wax, through the pool and through radiant heat across the gap. The middle of the vessel receives heat from both sides, so the pool opens in the centre first and reaches the outer wall last, and total pool temperature runs higher than either wick would produce alone. The correct two-wick pairing is usually one size smaller than you would pick for a single wick serving the same area. Wick two 100 mm jars — one with two C2 and one with two C1 — and the C1 pair will frequently be the clean one.

Spacing follows one geometric rule: divide the vessel into equal zones and put each wick at the centre of its own zone. For two wicks in a round jar, that puts them on a line through the centre, each at a quarter of the diameter from the middle. In a 100 mm jar the two wicks sit 50 mm apart, 25 mm from the centre and 25 mm from the wall. For three wicks, an equilateral triangle around the centre with each wick roughly a quarter of the diameter out. Crowd them closer and the centre overheats while the rim tunnels; push them wider and you get three separate small pools that never join.

Test a multi-wick candle as a new recipe, from zero
Do not carry a single-wick result across. Run the same three-way test with three pairings rather than three sizes — two sizes down, one size down, and the single-wick equivalent — and record the extra fields that only matter here: does the pool join across the middle, and by which session? A two-wick candle whose pools never merge is a worse product than a single-wick candle that tunnels, because it looks deliberate. Two Eco Candle Wicks at ₹5.90 each and two stickers at ₹2.50 each put the wicking cost of a large candle at ₹16.80 — still a small fraction of what the wax, fragrance and vessel cost.

One commercial note. A wide two-wick candle burns more wax per hour than a single-wick candle of the same weight, so its stated burn time is shorter. Wick stock discipline, and the argument against buying on price

At hobby scale you buy the wick you need. At production scale you hold the wick you need and the two either side of it, because the purpose of wick stock is not to have wicks — it is to make sure a batch is never blocked and a re-test never waits for a delivery. Read that total properly: ₹6,539.82 covers a month of 500 candles and a complete three-size re-test and both flanking sizes sitting on the shelf unused. That is ₹13.08 per unit shipped, and most of it is insurance rather than consumption. Note also that the Thick (C2) 10-wick pack was out of stock on 10 September 2026 — the 20-wick pack at ₹188.80 is the smallest buyable C2 quantity, which is worth knowing before you plan a test around a 10-pack.

Budget wicks for testing as a separate line from wicks for production, because they come out of different decisions. Production wicks scale with orders. Test wicks scale with how often your recipes change, which for a growing brand is far more often than the order book suggests — a new fragrance, a new jar, a seasonal colour, a wax batch. A useful rule is to add 10% of your monthly production count as a testing allowance and treat it as spent. If it is not spent, you are not testing enough.

Now the argument against our own interest. We sell wicks. Here is why price should never enter the decision. The wick is 2.2% of that. Moving from C1 to C2 costs ₹3.54 more per candle — 1.3% of the bill — and decides whether the other 97.8% burns properly or comes back as a complaint. There is no version of this arithmetic in which the right move is to save ₹3.54.

The same logic runs the other way. Do not buy the expensive wick because it is expensive, either. Performance Wooden Wicks at ₹590 for 10, ₹2,360 for 50 and ₹4,130 for 100 are a legitimate choice for a crackling flame and a wide, shallow pool, and they are a completely different burn profile with their own test protocol — not an upgrade to a cotton wick. If your cotton wick passes the standard, a ₹41.30 wooden wick does not make the candle better; it makes it a different product, which you then have to test, price and label as one. How long should a candle take to reach a full melt pool?
Two to three hours. Faster than two and the pool is running hotter than the wax wants, which shows up as soot on the glass, a shorter burn life and top notes cooking off early. Slower than three and the candle starts memorising a narrow pool, leaving a ring of wax on the wall that never recovers. The band is set by how people actually burn candles — one evening sitting, not twenty minutes and not eight hours.
Do I need to re-test my wick when I change fragrance oil?
Yes, every time. Fragrance oils differ in viscosity and in how they alter the wax's melt behaviour, and a change of oil is the commonest single cause of a candle that suddenly soots or suddenly tunnels on a wick that had been fine for months. The same applies to a new wax batch, a colour added or changed, a different fill weight and a new jar. Treat the wick as belonging to the recipe, not to the jar size.
When does a candle need two wicks instead of one?
Roughly once the internal diameter passes 80 mm, though it shifts with wax, load and wick type. Space two wicks on a line through the centre, each a quarter of the diameter out — in a 100 mm jar that is 50 mm apart and 25 mm from the wall. Size them one step smaller than you would for a single wick covering the same area, because each flame heats the other's wax and the combined pool runs hotter. Test the pairing as a new recipe and record whether the two pools merge, and by which session.
Should I buy the cheapest wick I can find?
No — and never choose a wick on price in either direction. At CSI pricing a 200 g soy jar candle costs about ₹269.90 in materials and the wick is ₹5.90 of it, or 2.2%. Stepping up from Thin (C1) to Thick (C2) adds ₹3.54 per candle, about 1.3% of the bill, and decides whether the other 97.8% burns properly. Equally, a ₹41.30 wooden wick is not an upgrade to a cotton one — it is a different burn profile that needs its own test. Buy whichever passed the burn test.
