In Indian heat, a soft pillar can slump on a shop shelf. Harden a soy pillar with microcrystalline wax at the stated 3–7% for pillars, and keep stock off sunlit shelves. Can Soy Wax Candles Survive 40°C Indian Summers? covers heat in more depth.
The summer shop-shelf test for freestanding candles
A pillar that stands perfectly in your workroom can lean in a boutique by June. North and west Indian summers routinely reach 40–45°C between April and June, and a shop window, glass cabinet or tin-roofed stall can feel hotter than the street. If you sell freestanding candles through shops, test for the shop, not for your room.
Run the test before the season, not during it
Pour three identical pillars from your intended recipe. Put one in the hottest spot you can find: a south-facing sill, a closed glass cabinet, the parcel shelf of a parked car. Leave one indoors as your reference, and wrap the third in the packaging you will sell it in and put it beside the first. Check them each day for a week. Look for leaning, a softened base, fingerprints taking easily, and oil on the surface.
If the exposed pillar leans and the reference does not, your recipe is too soft for summer stock.
Adjusting the recipe
For a Soy Pillar Wax pillar, the Microcrystalline Wax Slab's stated range for pillars is 3–7%. If you started at the low end, move towards 7% and repeat the test. For tall, thin or sculpted shapes, the micro page states 8–10% for sculptural work. Change the shape too: a squat pillar carries its own weight far better than a slender one.
Lower your fragrance load for summer stock as well. Heat can make heavily loaded candles sweat, and a sweating pillar looks tired even if it is still upright.
Talking to stockists
Tell stockists in plain words that soy pillars should be displayed away from windows and spotlights in summer. It protects your candles and their shelf. If a shop cannot give you a shaded spot, consider supplying jar candles to them for April to June instead.
The other end of the year
North Indian winter nights can drop near 5°C. Hard pillars rarely suffer from cold, but a pillar poured in a cold room can crack or pull away unevenly as it sets. Pour in a room you keep steady, whatever the season.
