What a 500 g bottle is for

A 500 g buyer is not testing any more. The scent has been poured, cured, burned and sold, and customers have come back for it. At that point the question changes from "is this any good?" to "how much of it should I hold?" Buy too little and you are reordering every week and paying small-bottle prices on the oils where they are higher. Buy too much and money sits in bottles on a shelf, open longer than it needs to be. The 500 g pack sits between those two mistakes for most single scents in a small candle business.

Start with how far it goes. Fragrance load is a percentage of the finished candle, so the arithmetic is the candle weight times the load, and the bottle divided by that.

The wax column is the useful one for restock planning. At 8%, a 500 g bottle needs about 5.75 kg of wax to be used up. That means it slightly outlasts a 5 kg bag: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹2,995 for 5 kg makes 27 × 200g candles, which use 432g of oil and leave 68g in the bottle. At 10% the relationship flips — 25 candles use the whole 500 g but only 4.5 kg of wax. Either way, one 500 g bottle and one 5 kg bag are a natural reorder pair, and ordering them together keeps both running out at roughly the same time. How long a 500 g bottle lasts — and when it is the wrong size

A pack size is only right relative to how fast you use it. The simplest measure is weeks of cover: candles per bottle divided by candles of that scent sold per week. Count one scent at a time — a range of five scents selling 30 candles a week between them is five separate restock decisions, not one.

Two rules come out of that table. Between about four and eight candles a week, 500 g is the working size: it gives one to two months of cover, which is long enough to avoid constant reordering and short enough that a bottle is not left half-full for a season. Above that, the choice is 1 kg or two 500 g bottles, and it should be decided on price per gram, which the next two sections set out. Below two a week, question whether the scent still belongs in the core range — or keep it as a limited seasonal pour.

Which oils come in 500 g

CSI lists 106 fragrance-oil products. We counted everything sold as a fragrance oil — classic candle oils, the Royale and oud lines, and designer- and Bath and Body Works-inspired oils — and excluded essential oils, perfume and attar bases, diffuser bases and fixative. 82 list a 500 g pack and 75 have it in stock. Whether an oil has a 500 g at all depends on which size ladder it is sold on.

Across the 75 in-stock 500 g packs the median price is ₹2,950 and the middle half runs from ₹2,300 to ₹3,999. Inside one 200g candle at 8% that median is ₹94.40 of oil; the cheapest, Citrus Lemon at ₹1,420, is ₹45.44; the dearest, English Pear & Freesia at ₹7,280, is ₹232.96.

For the 22 oils with no 500 g, the restock choice is 1 kg or several 100 g bottles, and on almost all of them the per-gram price is flat, so five 100 g bottles cost within a few rupees of half a kilo. Orange no.3, for example, is ₹803 × 5 = ₹4,015 against ₹8,032 ÷ 2 = ₹4,016. The one clear exception is Mint Sandalwood, where five 100 g bottles (₹2,745) cost ₹245.50 more than half its ₹4,999 kilo. Seven oils also list a 500 g that is sold out today, including the Dahlia BBW-inspired oil and Spiced Rum; three others have 500 g in stock but a sold-out kilo, including Sacred Sandal Ember, where 500 g is currently the only size you can buy.

500 g against 1 kg, per gram

We doubled the 500 g price and compared it with the 1 kg price for every oil with both packs in stock: 72 oils. The result is the single most useful fact for a restocking maker, because it tells you when "buy the kilo, it's cheaper" is true and when it is folklore.

So on 45 of the 72 oils, two 500 g bottles cost the same as or less than a kilo. For those, the only reason to buy 1 kg is convenience, and for a scent you pour steadily, two sealed 500 g bottles are more convenient: you open one, use it, then open the other. The exceptions matter because the rupees are real. Here they are in the unit that decides margins.

Four scents worth restocking at 500 g

Three of these carry CSI reviews from buyers who say they are coming back for more; the fourth is the oil where 500 g is clearly the cheapest way to buy. Each card shows every pack, the listed price per kilo at each size and how many 200g candles at 8% each pack scents.

A costed monthly restock

Here is what a restock looks like for a small brand with four proven scents selling at different speeds. The monthly candle counts are an example — replace them with your own tally — but the pack logic and the prices are live. Every candle is 200g at 8%, so each candle uses 16g of oil.

Notice what the table does not do: it does not buy a kilo of anything. Dark Vanilla Oud, the fastest seller, gets two 500 g bottles because they cost a rupee less than the kilo and one stays sealed for the second fortnight. Cinnamon Vanilla, the slowest, is the only line where the kilo is cheaper per gram (by ₹47.20) — but at 12 candles a month a kilo would be open for more than five months, so 500 g wins on handling. If you would rather not keep a bottle open for about eleven weeks, two 100 g bottles a month (₹967.60) is the alternative, at 5.13% more per gram.

Storing an open 500 g bottle

Fragrance oils are blends of aromatic materials, some of them volatile, and the three things a storage routine keeps away from them are heat, light and air. A 100 g sample is normally poured in one sample batch; a 500 g restock bottle may be open for one to three months on the table above. That is why storage belongs in a restock guide. It is also why we do not quote a shelf life here: CSI's product pages do not state one for these oils, and conditions in an Indian workroom vary enormously between a cool storeroom and a sunny top-floor studio in May. What we can give you is a routine that removes the obvious risks.
