Quick answers — read this first
Which colourant should I buy? Liquid dye if you want one product that covers pastel to deep and doses by drops. Dye chips if you prefer weighing a solid and pouring larger batches. Mica only if you want a metallic or pearl finish on the surface of the candle.

Can I mix mica into the wax? No. Mica is a pigment, not a dye — it does not dissolve. The particles stay suspended, get drawn into the wick as the pool burns, and clog it. Use mica on the surface, on a mould face or as a wax wash, never in the body of a container candle.

How much dye do I use? Dose by weight against wax weight, not by eye. A sensible starting range for liquid dye is 0.02–0.05% of wax weight for a pastel and 0.3–0.5% for a deep shade — that is 0.2 g to 5 g per kilogram of wax. Then burn-test.

Does colour change the burn? It can. Colourant is a non-wax additive at the wick, and heavy loads change how a wick behaves. Re-test the wick every time you change the colour or the dose.
The short answer
Two of the three dissolve. Liquid dye and dye chips go into solution in molten wax and colour the wax body. Mica is a pigment and stays a solid particle.
Dose by weight, record it. Liquid dye from 0.02% of wax weight for a pastel to about 0.5% for a saturated shade. "A few drops" is not a recipe and will not reproduce across batches.
Buy two shades, not nine. A 15 ml bottle is ₹236 and a pastel dose makes it last for months. Uncoloured soy sells perfectly well — do not build a nine-colour inventory before you have sold a hundred candles.

What should you actually buy to colour candles, and how much of it?
Start with one bottle of liquid dye in the shade closest to your brand colour, at ₹236 for 15 ml. Liquid dye dissolves fully in molten wax, covers pastel through to deep on the same bottle, and doses in fractions of a gram — which is why one bottle lasts a very long time. Add dye chips when you move to larger batches and want to weigh a solid instead of counting drops; they dissolve more slowly, so stir until the melt runs clear. Buy mica only for surface work. Mica is a pigment, not a dye. It does not dissolve, and stirred into the wax body it will clog your wicks. Dose colour by weight against wax weight — roughly 0.02–0.05% of wax weight for a pastel and 0.3–0.5% for a deep shade — then burn-test the wick again, because a colour change is a formula change. The three colourants, and what each is actually for

The Candle Dyes collection holds 25 products. Two of the three categories inside it are dyes. The third is not, and treating it as one is the most expensive misunderstanding on this page.

A dye dissolves. Drop it into molten wax, stir, and the colourant goes into solution the way sugar goes into hot water — no separate substance is left in there, and the coloured wax travels up the wick and combusts with it. A pigment does not dissolve. It is a finely milled solid, and it stays a solid at every temperature your pour will reach. Both make wax look coloured. Only one is safe in the part of the candle that has to burn.

Liquid dye — the default for most makersA concentrated, oil-soluble dye supplied in a dropper bottle. It goes into solution almost immediately at pouring temperature, needs no pre-melting, and the same bottle takes you from a barely-there tint to a saturated shade purely by dose. That range is why it is the sensible first purchase: you are not buying "pastel purple" and "deep purple" as two products, you are buying purple and deciding depth at the bench. Dye chips — solid, weighable, slower to disperseThe same dye chemistry delivered in a solid wax-based chip. The advantage is handling: a chip is easy to weigh on a candle making weighing scale and does not run down a bottle onto your bench. The disadvantage is dispersion time — a chip has to melt before it can dissolve, so add it early into hot wax and stir until the melt is completely clear with no streaks against the side of the pitcher. Mica — a pigment for surfaces, not a dye for waxMica is a natural mineral, milled fine and usually coated to give a metallic or pearlescent sheen. It is the only way to get gold, silver or a true shimmer, because that effect comes from light bouncing off flat platelets — something no dissolved dye can do. That same structure is why it must never go into the wax body. Its correct uses are all surface uses: dusted on a finished top, brushed into a silicone mould before pouring, or in a thin wax wash. ₹57.82 for 10 g standard, ₹116.82 for 10 g premium.
The dye chip failure nobody photographs. An under-stirred chip does not produce an obviously wrong candle. It produces a batch of twelve jars where three are a shade darker than the other nine, and you find out when they are lined up for photography. Chips need the wax genuinely hot and genuinely stirred — a bamboo stirring stick at ₹118 for five, moved for a timed period rather than a vague swirl, and a pen thermometer at ₹354.

Mica is a pigment, not a dye — and it will clog a wick

This is the most useful paragraph on this page, so it is stated plainly. Do not stir mica powder into the wax body of a container candle. Not a small amount, not "just for shimmer", not mixed with liquid dye to soften it. Mica particles do not dissolve in wax at any temperature or any dose. They remain discrete solids held in suspension, and a burning candle is a machine specifically designed to draw liquid from the melt pool up into the wick by capillary action.

Follow what happens over a burn. The wick draws molten wax upward through the braid. The wax reaches the flame and combusts. The mica does not — it is a mineral, and it has no fuel value at candle-flame temperature. So it stays behind, lodged in the fibres of the braid. Every hour of burning adds more. The capillary channels narrow, the wick draws less fuel, and the flame gets smaller and smaller until it chokes out in a pool of unburnt wax. Along the way you will usually see a hard, crusted, oversized carbon head on the wick that no amount of trimming fixes, because the obstruction is inside the braid rather than on top of it. This failure does not show up on the first test burn. It shows up in a customer's home, halfway down a candle they have already paid for.

What mica is genuinely good at. Three things, all of them surface work. One: dust it dry over a set candle top with a soft brush for a metallic sheen, which photographs extremely well and costs a fraction of a gram. Two: brush it into a silicone mould before you pour a pillar or a shaped candle, so it transfers onto the outer face of the demoulded candle and never sits in the burning core. Three: use it in a thin wax wash painted onto a finished outer surface. All three put the mica on a face the melt pool never reaches. The CSI principle
If it does not dissolve, it does not belong anywhere the wick can reach it.
That single rule sorts every colourant, glitter, dried flower, herb and craft powder you will ever be tempted to add to a candle. Solids in the wax body get drawn to the wick or fuel the flame. Decoration lives on the outside, above the burn line, or embedded in a wall the pool will never touch.
If you have already poured a mica batch
Do not ship it. Burn one jar all the way down first — the load may have been low enough to survive, or the flame may drown at the halfway mark. Either way you learn it on your own bench rather than through a refund request. Then re-pour with liquid dye for the body colour and keep the mica for the top.

Dosing: colour is weighed against wax, not counted by eye

Colour is dosed the same way fragrance is — as a percentage of the wax weight in the pour. That framing is the only one that survives a change of batch size. "Six drops" means one thing in a 500 g test pour and something else entirely in the 4 kg pitcher you use once orders arrive.

The numbers below are CSI bench starting points, not manufacturer specifications. Pigment strength varies by shade — blacks and blues reach depth at a lower dose than yellows do — so treat these as the first pour of a test series rather than a recipe to copy. Cost per gram is calculated from the 50 ml bottle at ₹472, which works out at ₹9.44 per gram.

Read the right-hand column again. A pastel candle carries under one rupee of colour, and even a deep, saturated 200 g candle carries under nine. A 50 g bottle at ₹472 colours 100 kg of wax at a 0.05% pastel dose, or 50 kg at 0.1% — 50 kg being roughly 270 candles at 184 g of wax each. The 100 g bottle at ₹900 works out at ₹9.00 per gram and covers over 500 candles at 0.1%. Colour will never decide whether your business works, which is exactly why it should not be the line item you guess at.

How to run the test series
Melt 500 g of your production wax. Pour four identical 100 g test jars. Dose them at 0.02%, 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2% of the wax weight in each jar — 0.02 g, 0.05 g, 0.1 g and 0.2 g respectively. Wick them identically, label the bases and let them set. You now own a physical shade card in your own wax, which beats any chart on a screen, because a screen cannot show you what your wax does to the shade. On burn behaviour, here is what is known and where the evidence stops. Dye is a non-wax additive that ends up at the flame, and at high loads makers commonly report more carbon build-up and mushrooming than on the same candle poured clear. What nobody can give you from a blog post is the magnitude for your dye, dose, wax and wick, because those four interact. So the rule is procedural, not numerical: a colour change is a formula change, and a formula change requires a fresh burn test. Two micas were out of stock on the 10 September 2026 pull — Orange and Silver — so check the collection before planning a launch around them. Consistency across batches, and why the same dose reads differently

A hobbyist can make a nice green candle. A brand has to make the same green in March and in September, in a batch of six and a batch of two hundred. That is a records problem before it is a chemistry problem, and it is solved with a scale and a notebook rather than with better dye.

Now the part that catches most makers out. Wax changes the colour, not just the dye. Paraffin sets to a clean, translucent base, so dye reads close to its true hue and saturates quickly — Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets at ₹354 per kg shows a dye at its most vivid. Soy is a different starting point: naturally an opaque off-white to cream, and it crystallises as it sets, so it scatters light rather than transmitting it. The same dose in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599 per kg comes out lighter and slightly warmed by the cream underneath — a blue reads dusty, a yellow reads buttery.

Coconut-soy pushes this further. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹650 per kg sets whiter and more opaque than straight soy, and more opacity means more light scattered back out before it reaches the dye. Expect the same dose to read paler in coconut-soy than in soy, and paler in soy than in paraffin. That is not a fault in anybody's dye, and it is why your shade card has to be made in your own production wax. Soy frosting will affect your colour over time. Soy's natural crystallisation can produce a white, powdery bloom on the surface and against the glass over weeks. On a clear candle nobody notices. On a deep navy or a black it is highly visible, and it shows up in customer photographs long after the candle has left you. If you run dark shades in soy, either say so on the listing as a characteristic of natural wax, or run those colours in a blend or paraffin base. Which brings us to the argument against buying anything at all. Uncoloured candles sell perfectly well. Much of the premium end of the Indian market — and almost all of the minimal, natural-materials end of it — is uncoloured cream soy in a plain vessel, and that is a deliberate aesthetic rather than a compromise. Natural soy colour signals "no unnecessary additives" to exactly the customer willing to pay more, and it removes a whole class of production problem: no shade drift, no re-wicking after a colour change, no frosting complaints on a dark surface, no dye inventory.

Do not buy nine colours on day one
All nine liquid dye shades at 15 ml is ₹2,124 of colour, and the maker who buys the lot typically uses two and lets seven go to the back of a shelf. Buy one or two 15 ml bottles at ₹236 each in the shades your brand actually uses, prove they sell, then expand. If you are still deciding what your brand is, put that ₹2,124 into fragrance or better vessels, both of which customers pay for more readily than colour. When colour does earn its place it is doing one of three jobs: signalling the scent before the customer smells it, so a green reads fresh and a deep brown reads woody; matching a vessel or seasonal collection so a range photographs as a set; or carrying a brand identity across products. "Because coloured candles look nicer" is not one of the three, and it is why most full dye sets get bought. Decide which job colour is doing, then buy exactly the shades that do it. What is the difference between liquid candle dye and dye chips?

Why does the same dye look paler in soy wax than in paraffin?
Because the base is different. Paraffin sets clear and translucent, so light passes through the dyed wax and the colour reads at close to its true hue. Soy is naturally an opaque off-white and crystallises as it sets, so it scatters light back out of the surface and reads lighter and warmer at the same dose. A coconut-soy blend such as CSI 468 is whiter and more opaque again, so the same dose reads paler still. Nothing is wrong with the dye — build your shade card in the wax you actually pour.
