Silicone vs polycarbonate vs aluminium

Torn petals, a candle stuck fast, a seam line down the side, a mould gone tacky after forty pours — every one traces back to a mismatch between material and wax.

Silicone is flexible, and flexibility is the whole point. A rose has petals that curl back over themselves; a teddy has ears that overhang the head. Those are undercuts, and no rigid mould can release one — the candle would have to pass through a hole narrower than itself. Silicone deforms instead: you peel the mould off the candle. Every figurative, floral and food-form mould in the range is silicone, and most fall between ₹177 and ₹943.

The cost is threefold. Detail retention degrades once the surface has been abraded, dye-stained or heat-cycled a few hundred times. Seam lines: two-part moulds meet along a parting line and a thin flash of wax always creeps in — a fingernail trims it, on every unit. And lifespan is finite and behaviour-dependent, which has its own section below.

Polycarbonate and acrylic are rigid, and rigidity is also the whole point. A dimensionally stable wall gives what silicone cannot: a near-glassy surface with no parting line, because a pillar mould is one seamless tube. Aluminium is the third traditional material, and the CSI Candle Moulds collection does not stock it. Against that: they are opaque, so you cannot see fill level or a trapped air pocket, and they need the hardest waxes plus a release agent.

Which wax goes in a mould

This is the part most people get wrong, and it costs them a mould rather than a candle. The range answer is Soy Pillar Wax — ₹300 / 500g, ₹600 / 1kg, ₹3,000 / 5kg, ₹6,000 / 10kg — formulated for exactly this job: a candle that holds its shape with no vessel and releases without being fought.

Why container wax fails in a mould. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹299 / 500g and CSI 464 at ₹260 / 500g are built to adhere to glass so the candle does not pull away and leave wet spots. Adhesion is a feature there and a defect in a mould. They are also softer, because in a jar the glass is the structure. Three things follow:

Two other waxes matter here. Beeswax Pellets at ₹800 / 1kg are naturally hard and hold detail well, though sticky in a mould. Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets at ₹354 / 1kg contract sharply on cooling — the traditional pillar-mould wax, and a useful diagnostic: if a rigid mould releases paraffin cleanly, the mould is fine and your wax was the problem. Microcrystalline Wax Slab at ₹149 / 500g and Vybar Additive at ₹156 / 50g are the hardness additives.

Demoulding, wicking and the freezer myth

Cure before you release. Wax is not finished when it is cool to the touch; it is still crystallising and still gaining strength. A candle that feels solid after ninety minutes tears at the petal edges; the same candle left overnight comes out clean. Working rule: small silicone shapes four to six hours, detailed floral or figurative moulds overnight, a large pillar in a rigid mould a full twenty-four hours.

Mould sealer is not optional on rigid pillar moulds. A pillar mould has a hole in the base for the wick, and molten wax finds it immediately. Candle Mold Sealer at ₹472 is reusable tacky putty: thread the wick, pull it taut, press a pea-sized piece over the hole outside. Without it you lose wax onto the bench, the base comes out malformed and the wick shifts as the level drops. Add it to the same order as the mould.

Wicking a moulded candle is the opposite of wicking a jar. In a rigid pillar mould you thread the wick through the base hole before pouring, hold it central with a Steel Wick Holder (₹250 for a set of 5) or Bamboo Wick Holder (₹118 for a set of 5), and seal the base. In a solid silicone mould you pour without a wick, cure fully, then insert one — which is what a Premium Candle Wicking Needle at ₹472 is for. Last habit: pour tall pillars in two stages. A deep candle shrinks as it sets and leaves a sinkhole around the wick, so pour to a centimetre below the top and top up later with the wax you held back. Cavity count, lifespan and what not to buy first

A mould is a capital purchase that amortises over units. The number that matters is cost per usable unit over the life of the mould, and it sorts the catalogue in a way price alone does not.

Take the two ends. A 40 Cavity Square Mould gives forty wax melts per pour: twenty pours is 800 units. A David Candle Mould at ₹3,540 gives one candle per pour over a cure measured in a day, with a real chance of a torn release early on — twenty pours is perhaps sixteen sellable candles. The mould costs 23 times more and produces 50 times fewer units. That is not an argument against buying it, but for knowing which business you are in first.

Two of the same mould usually beats two different ones, because cure time, not pour time, is the constraint. The same logic at scale is in scaling to 1,000 orders a month.

What actually destroys a silicone mould. Silicone does not wear out from pouring wax into it. It fails from four specific abuses, in rough order of how often they happen:

Rigid moulds fail differently and more slowly. Polycarbonate and acrylic craze on contact with solvents, so clean with hot water and a soft cloth, and never store them with anything hard inside. Treated properly, a ₹942.82 polycarbonate mould will still be producing saleable candles long after silicone moulds bought the same day have been thrown out — a real part of the value case for the higher price.
