Will a soy candle melt at 40°C? Not in a shaded room. The published melting point for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is 50–53°C, comfortably above a 40°C afternoon. What does happen at 40°C is softening: a glossy top, a fingerprint that stays, and free-standing shapes losing their edges.

So what actually goes wrong in a 40°C Indian summer? Three things, in order of likelihood: the surface softens and marks; fragrance oil appears at the surface because the load had no headroom; and free-standing candles lose shape. Can soy wax candles survive a 40°C Indian summer?
In a shaded indoor room, yes — and the number that says so is a published one: a melting point of 50–53°C for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468. A 40°C afternoon in Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur is ten degrees short of that. What 40°C does do is soften the surface: soy is a mixture that goes gradually from firm to soft across a band rather than switching at one temperature, so a candle can look glossy, hold a fingerprint and show frosting it never showed in January while remaining completely solid. That is softening, it is mostly cosmetic, and much of it reverses when the candle cools — which is why the 48-hour test below includes a recovery read. Three things change the answer. Format: a lidded glass jar is the most robust thing you can sell in an Indian summer, while a free-standing pillar, a votive out of its holder and a wax melt are carrying their own shape and lose it first. Exposure: 40°C of shaded air is not 40°C on a sunlit windowsill, in a closed shop with the shutter down, in a first-floor godown under a concrete roof in May, or inside a stationary vehicle — those run far higher, and no soy wax CSI stocks is formulated for the last one. What 40°C actually means for a candle

The forecast number and the candle number are two different numbers, and only one of them is on your shelf.

When a weather app says 40°C it is reporting shaded air temperature at a measuring station. Your candle is not in the shade at a measuring station. It is on a shelf that may be against a west-facing wall, in a glass jar that absorbs radiant heat, inside a room whose concrete roof has been in the sun since ten in the morning, or in a carton in a vehicle. Each of those adds something, and none of the additions is published anywhere.

The second thing to separate is melting from softening. Soy wax is not a pure substance with one switch-over point; it is a mixture, so it passes gradually from firm through soft to liquid across a band of temperatures. That is general candle-making practice, not a CSI measurement, and it is the single most useful idea on this page. A published melting point tells you where the wax has clearly gone liquid. It does not tell you where the top of your candle starts taking fingerprints — which is a good deal lower, and is what your customer photographs.

A published melting point in the container range is 50–53°C for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, whose page also gives a pour temperature of 58–60°C. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks publishes melting to approximately 80–85°C and a pour of 75–80°C, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. For the other grades those numbers are not published, and this page will not invent them. What all of that means practically: at a shaded 40°C, no soy candle in CSI's container range should liquefy. The three states you are scoring for. Pass is a flat, matt top that does not hold a fingerprint and wax still gripping the glass. Watch is glossy, soft and marks easily but keeps its shape — the state most Indian summer candles actually reach, and mostly cosmetic. Fail is movement: liquid at the rim, a leaning wick, a free-standing shape gone. These are illustrations of what to look for, not photographs of any tested candle.

Calling a glossy top a melted candle. This is the most common false alarm of the Indian summer, and it costs makers money in refunds they did not owe and in wax changes they did not need. Press a clean fingertip on the surface for five seconds. If the print stays but nothing moves, the candle has softened, not melted. Two Indian details worth naming. First, the monsoon does not end the problem: a humid 34°C afternoon in Mumbai or Kochi is milder for the wax than a dry 42°C in Nagpur, but it adds moisture on cold glass and dampness in packaging, which is a separate set of problems. Second, the cruellest season for finished stock is often not peak May but the weeks around a festival, when stock sits packed and boxed for longer than usual. If you are pouring towards Diwali on 8 November 2026, your candles should be poured by about mid-October to allow a 14 to 21 day cure plus transit — which means a large part of that stock is sitting in cartons through late October, not being sold the day it is made.

Measure the shelf, not the city
Put a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 on the shelf where your finished stock waits, and read it at 3 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. for a week in May. That single week of numbers is worth more than any general advice about Indian summers, because it is the temperature your candles actually experience. The hot-box test: run it in your own kitchen this week

Six candles, one box, one thermometer, forty-eight hours. It answers the question for your candles rather than for candles in general.

The design is deliberately crude, because a crude test that you actually run beats a precise one you do not. You need a closed box that holds roughly 40°C, a thermometer inside it, six candles from a single cured batch, and the discipline to look at them at fixed times. An insulated carton with a low-wattage incandescent bulb, a domestic oven at its lowest setting with the door cracked, or a sealed cupboard on a hot afternoon can all hold a usable temperature — what makes it a test is the thermometer, not the box.

Thresholds, which are CSI's own guidance rather than a standard: 16–18 at hour 24 is a clear pass for that temperature. 13–15 is a watch — cosmetic softening that probably recovers, worth re-checking at hour 48 before you change anything. 12 or less is a fail at 40°C, and the failing checks tell you where to look. If you ship candles or sell at outdoor exhibitions, repeat the whole run at 45°C and again at 50°C. A candle that scores 17 at 40°C and 8 at 50°C is not a bad candle; it is a candle with a documented limit, which is a far more useful thing to own than an opinion.

Reading the result: what each failing check is telling you

A low score is not a verdict on the wax. It is a pointer to one of five levers, only one of which is the wax.

Work through the failing checks in the order below, cheapest lever first. The reason for the order is simple economics: changing where a candle is stored costs nothing, changing a load costs a little and saves money, changing a container costs per candle, and changing a wax costs per candle forever.

Changing wax after one failed check. A grade change follows every candle you will ever make, and it is the most expensive lever on the list. If the only failing checks are gloss and fingerprint, the wax did nothing wrong: a soy container candle is allowed to soften at 40°C. Change the storage, re-run the test, and only consider a different grade when the candle fails on oil at the surface or on shape after you have already tried the 8–10% band. The wax comparison itself belongs in a side-by-side pour, not in a heat test.
Testing candles that have not finished curing. A candle that is four days old has not settled, and putting it into a 40°C box tells you about the cure, not about the heat. Wait the 14 days. If a festive deadline will not allow 14 days of cure plus the two-day test, that is a planning problem you can solve in September and cannot solve in the last week of October — for Diwali on 8 November 2026, pouring should be finished by about mid-October.

What survives 40°C and what does not, by format

The container decides more of this than the grade does.

Run the test on the formats you actually sell, but expect the ranking below. It follows from one idea: the more a candle relies on its own structure to hold its shape and to keep its surface protected, the worse it does in heat.

Two practical notes. First, a lid is not only heat protection — it keeps dust out of a surface that has gone slightly tacky, which is exactly the failure mode that makes a summer candle look cheap. Four Indian scenarios, and what the test actually finds

The same question — will my candles survive 40°C — has four different answers depending on where you are standing.

A home maker in Delhi selling on Instagram

Conditions: a first-floor flat, a May afternoon over 43°C outside, stock kept in a bedroom cupboard, orders dispatched two or three at a time by a local courier. The test to run is the 40°C box on candles in the jars you actually sell, because the cupboard is probably cooler than you fear and the parcel is probably hotter. The finding, in most cases of this shape, is that the candles pass easily on the shelf and that the risk is concentrated into the day the parcel travels. The correct spend is a lid and a dispatch decision, not a wax. Before you change anything, put a thermometer in the cupboard for a week.

Conditions: candles displayed on open tables under a shamiana or in a mall atrium, handled repeatedly by customers, transported in a car boot between venues. This is the hardest of the four, because the candle is warm and being touched at the same time — the exact combination that turns softening into fingerprints and dusty tops. Run the test at 40°C and again at 45°C, and run it with the lid off, because that is how you display. Conditions: 34–38°C for months rather than a short brutal peak, high humidity, candles sitting on a shop shelf for weeks before they sell. Sustained moderate heat with a long dwell time is a different test from a hot afternoon: run the 40°C box, then leave a matched pair of candles at whatever the shop actually reads for four weeks and score them weekly. The failures in this shape are slow ones — surfaces that gradually go glossy, frosting that spreads, labels lifting in the damp. Frosting in particular is cosmetic and normal in soy, and it is worth telling your retailer so before they call it a fault.

The city you pour in tells you nothing about the city your candle arrives in, which is the trap in this shape. A candle scoring 17, 15 and 9 across those three is a candle you can sell confidently within a region and should think carefully about sending across the country in May. That is a business decision with a number attached, which is the entire point of testing.

Across all four, the pattern is the same: the shelf is usually fine, the parcel is usually the risk, and the cheapest levers — lid, storage spot, dispatch day, fragrance headroom — sit far ahead of the expensive one. The test is what tells you which of those you actually need, and it costs ₹1,474.06 once.

What this test is not

The limits of the method, stated plainly, because a test you over-trust is worse than no test.

It is not a laboratory method. A home hot box has uneven temperatures, and opening the door changes the reading. Treat the score as a comparison between your own candles under repeatable conditions, not as a certified figure to print on a label.

It does not simulate transit. A parcel in a moving vehicle is vibrated, stacked, crushed and heated at once, and it is heated in cycles rather than steadily. A 40°C hot box tells you about a hot shelf. It does not tell you what a courier network will do in June.

It does not tell you about a wax grade in general. It tells you about one wax at one load in one jar with one wick. Change any of those and re-run it. The published numbers you can rely on are the ones on the product pages — the 50–53°C melting point and 58–60°C pour for CSI 468, the 75–80°C pour and 80–85°C melt for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, the 80–90°C working range for CSI 464 — and CSI does not publish heat-resistance figures for any grade. Where a number is not published, ask on WhatsApp rather than assuming one.

And it will sometimes tell you to do nothing. A great many Indian makers who believe they have a summer problem have a display problem, a packaging problem or a fragrance-load problem. If your candles score 17 at 40°C and your shelf never reads above 34°C, you have your answer, and the correct next step is to go back to wicks, throw and cure — the things that decide whether the candle is good, rather than whether it survives.

Can soy wax candles survive 40°C?
In a shaded room, yes. 40°C sits below every melting point CSI publishes, including the 50–53°C stated for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468. What happens instead is softening: the top goes glossy and holds a fingerprint. That is usually cosmetic and often reverses on cooling. A sunlit windowsill, a closed shop or a stationary vehicle is a different question, because those run far above the forecast.
At what temperature does soy wax actually melt?
It depends on the grade, and only some grades publish a figure. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states a melting point of 50–53°C. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states melting to approximately 80–85°C, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. Why did my candle go glossy and sticky on top but not melt?
Because soy is a mixture that softens gradually across a band rather than melting at one point. Well below any melting point the surface becomes soft enough to take a fingerprint and to look wet. If nothing moves when you tilt the jar, it has softened, not melted. Cool it flat overnight, smooth the top gently if you need to, and check whether the storage spot is the real culprit.
Will fragrance oil burn off or evaporate out of a candle in a 40°C summer?
Flashpoint is a transport and handling property, not the temperature at which oil leaves wax — the Blue Ocean page states a flashpoint of 143°C, far above anything a shelf or a parcel reaches. What you see in summer is oil coming out of the wax structure at the surface because the load had no headroom, which is a load and storage question, not evaporation.
Are some candle formats safer than others in a 40°C Indian summer?
Yes, and the gap is bigger than the gap between waxes. A lidded glass jar is the most robust format; a tin with a press lid is close behind and lighter to ship. Votives out of their holders, pillars and wax melts carry their own shape with nothing to hold it, and they lose definition first. If a design must be free-standing, treat it as a cool-season product in most Indian cities.
