What is actually wrong with buying additives in India? Not the price and not the availability. It is that they arrive with no chemical identity, no wax-compatibility statement, no dose range and no MSDS unless you ask. You are buying a bag and a nickname.

What should I demand before I pay? Five things: what it is chemically, which wax systems it is for, the recommended dose as a percentage by weight, the MSDS, and a plain answer to "which defect does this fix?". A supplier who cannot answer all five is selling a bag of unknown.

Read the right-hand column as the real cost of the missing paperwork. A bag that arrives with none of the five is not an additive; it is an unidentified powder with a price on it. Line 5 is the one that most often ends the purchase — asked directly which defect the product fixes, a large number of buyers discover they do not have that defect.

How do you source candle making additives in India without getting it wrong?
You treat it as a documentation purchase, not a product purchase. Additives are easy to buy in India and hard to buy well, because they are almost universally listed with a name, a weight and a price and nothing else — no chemical identity, no statement of which wax systems they suit, no dose range, and no MSDS unless you chase one. So before you pay, make the supplier answer five questions: what is it chemically, which waxes is it formulated for, what dose range by weight, will you send the MSDS, and which specific defect does it fix. A supplier who cannot answer those is selling you a bag of unknown, and no price makes that a good buy. Then check that you have the problem at all: most additive knowledge circulating online was written for paraffin, and a modern soy container wax such as Eco Soy CSI 400 or CSI 464 is already formulated for single-pour container work. The additive documentation gap in India

Every other category in candle supply has caught up. Wax comes with a stated fragrance ceiling. Fragrance oils come with IFRA and MSDS paperwork. Additives still arrive as a bag with a nickname on it.

Buy a kilogram of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks in India in 2026 and you can establish, before you pay, what the wax is for, what fragrance load it is formulated to hold — up to 13% on the Chunks, up to 10% on CSI 464 — and what temperature band to work in. Buy a fragrance oil and you can ask for the IFRA certificate and the MSDS and expect both. That is the normal state of the market now.

Additives did not come with it. Search "candle additive India" and you find listings that give a product name, a pack weight and a price, then stop. No statement of what the substance is. No statement of which wax systems it was formulated for. No dose range. Very often no MSDS anywhere on the page, and when you ask, the reply is silence or a scan belonging to a different grade of the same material. You are being asked to add an unidentified substance to a product a customer will burn in their home, on the strength of a name.

The failure has a predictable shape. A maker has a problem — a rough top, a weak candle, tunnelling, a pillar that will not release. They search, find a forum post recommending an additive, and buy it, because it is cheap and easy to buy. Nothing on the listing tells them the post was written about paraffin, or that the dose quoted was a percentage of a formulation that is not theirs. They guess a quantity and pour, and one of three things happens: nothing changes, something else breaks, or the candle appears to improve and they cannot repeat it, because they changed the wax chemistry without recording what they did.

What the missing dose range actually costs. Under-dose and you have paid for nothing and concluded, wrongly, that the additive does not work. Over-dose and you have made new defects — anything that changes how wax crystallises will, past a point, change how it holds fragrance, adheres to glass and burns. Both cost a full test cycle; the second can cost a batch you have already sold. Neither is a fault in the chemical. Both are faults in the paperwork.

The gap persists for a commercial reason. Additives are a low-value line sold a few hundred grams at a time, and documenting one properly costs the same effort whether it turns over ₹5,000 a month or ₹500,000. So it does not get done. The practical consequence: ask, individually, every time, rather than wait for listings to improve.

CSI's position is not that we have solved it. We stock two additive-class products, we supply an MSDS on request for what we sell, and we issue GST invoices. What we do not do is publish a dosage figure we cannot stand behind, which is why you will not find a "use 1%" or "use 3%" number anywhere on this page. A percentage invented to make an article feel complete is exactly what has damaged this category. A dose has to come from the manufacturer of the grade in your hand — and if nobody can tell you which grade that is, you have your answer about the purchase.

The one-question test for any additive listing
Ask the seller: "Which wax systems is this formulated for, and what dose range?" You are not really asking about dosage — you are finding out whether anyone at the other end knows what they are selling. An answer naming a wax family and a range is worth buying from. "It works with all waxes" means they do not know, because no additive behaves identically in paraffin, soy, coconut-soy, beeswax and gel.

What to demand from an additive supplier

This is what you should be able to get from any supplier before money moves, on any additive, in any quantity. None of it is exotic or commercially sensitive — it is information a manufacturer generates as a matter of course, and a reseller has either obtained it or not bothered.

Question five ends most purchases, and it should. Asking it forces you to state your own defect in specific terms — not "my candles aren't great" but "the tops set rough after a 24-hour cool at 26°C ambient". Said that way, the problem is often obviously a process variable rather than a chemistry one, and the purchase cancels itself at no cost. Verifying the wax you already have is a cheaper first move than adding a second material to it.

The MSDS demand deserves its own note, because makers treat it as bureaucratic and it is not. It is the only document that tells you how to store the material through an Indian summer, what to do if it contacts skin, and what happens when it is overheated — and a workshop that melts wax has all three as live risks. It also becomes commercially load-bearing the moment you grow: corporate gifting buyers, export customers and the larger marketplaces all ask for documentation on the inputs, and "I bought it from a seller who did not have the sheet" does not survive that conversation. If you are heading toward the volumes in scaling to 1,000 orders a month, collect the paperwork while the order book is still small enough to make it easy.

The CSI principle
An additive you cannot identify, dose or document is not an ingredient. It is a variable you have paid to add.
Every material in a candle should be traceable to a name, a grade and a supplier who will answer a technical question. That is already normal for wax and for fragrance oil. Additives are exempt only because the category is small enough that nobody has insisted.

A wax modifier that is also a wax
Microcrystalline Wax Slab (Premium Grade)
Microcrystalline sits in an honest middle position: a petroleum wax in its own right, also used in small proportions to modify another wax. That dual nature is why it is priced like a wax — ₹298 to ₹299 per kilogram puts it below every soy in the CSI range and only ₹78 to ₹79 per kilogram above Semi Refined Paraffin. It ships as a slab, so factor cutting and weighing into your process. One quirk: two 500g slabs come to ₹298 for the kilogram against ₹299 for the 1kg pack. A ₹1 rounding artefact rather than a strategy, but real, and we would rather show the arithmetic than round it away.

Stearic acid: listed, but not priced in this export. Stearic acid is the third additive candle makers in India ask for most often, and it appears on the CSI store. Cost in context: cheap per candle, expensive per kilogram

Additives feel inexpensive because you buy them in small packs and use them in small doses. Both are true, and neither tells you what you are paying for the material. Run the per-kilogram figure and the picture changes: Vybar at ₹3,120 per kilogram is 14.2 times the price of the cheapest wax on the store and 2.8 times the dearest one. That does not make it a bad buy — you use a fraction of the quantity — but standardising on it across a range needs the arithmetic done deliberately, because apart from fragrance oil it is the most expensive material by weight that will ever go into your candle.

Read across, then down. At 2g in a 200g candle, Vybar adds ₹6.24 against ₹79.80 of Eco Soy CSI 400 — under 8%, invisible in your retail price. At 10g it adds ₹31.20, which is 39% on top of the wax and not invisible at all. Microcrystalline stays trivial in every column. Compatibility is wax-system specific

Almost every additive article online was written about paraffin, by people pouring paraffin, in decades when paraffin was what everybody poured. If you pour soy, you are reading someone else's manual.

Paraffin is close to a blank base — cheap, consistent, and not formulated for any particular job. Semi Refined Paraffin at ₹220/kg and Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets at ₹354/kg are raw materials in the fullest sense. The whole practice of candle additives grew up around that: if the base does nothing on its own, you add things to make it hold fragrance, harden, release from a mould or set with an even top. In a paraffin workshop, additives genuinely are part of the recipe.

A modern soy container wax is not a blank base. It is a finished formulation, and the formulator has already made those decisions for you. Eco Soy CSI 400 is sold as a one-pour wax needing no additives, fragrance in at 80–90°C. CSI 464 is a single-pour container wax with low frosting and strong glass adhesion. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is blended for a fuller release and a smoother top. Those properties are the product. Adding an additive to a formulated soy wax is not improving an inert base — it is re-formulating somebody else's formulation, usually without knowing what is already in it.

There is a specific, overlooked consequence. The stated fragrance ceilings — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for CSI 464 — are formulation limits stated for the wax as supplied: how much oil that specific composition holds in solution. Add a polymer or a second wax and the number no longer describes what is in your pot. It might go up or down; nobody has tested your blend. You have swapped a documented ceiling for an undocumented one, in order to solve a problem the wax may not have.

Three process checks before any additive purchase
Run all three on your current wax, changing nothing else. One: is fragrance going in at the temperature the wax specifies, measured rather than estimated — 80–90°C for CSI 400 and CSI 464, method in the temperature guide. Two: has the candle had a full 14 to 21 day cure, lids on, out of sunlight, before you judged it. Three: does the wick open a full melt pool to the wall in two to three hours. Any "no" there, fix it and re-test before spending a rupee on chemistry — full sequence in the weak throw diagnosis guide.

This is where we argue against our own interest, and it is the most useful paragraph here. If you pour soy container candles and you are having a soy container problem, buy no additive. Frosting, wet spots, rough tops, weak throw, tunnelling and poor glass adhesion in soy are overwhelmingly caused by pour temperature, ambient temperature, cool-down rate, cure length and wick size — five things that cost nothing to change and can be tested this week. Testing an additive, and what the test costs

If you have worked through all that and still want the additive, test it properly or not at all. A badly run trial is worse than none: it produces a confident conclusion from nothing, and you build a range on it. Five rules, then the bill.

The only difference between control jars and test jars is the additive. If you change the wick at the same time — and people do, because they expect to have to — you have learned nothing.

Re-test the wick, in a second roundThis is the rule people skip and the one that costs money. An additive that changes hardness or melt behaviour has changed the pool, so the wick that was right in the control wax is not necessarily right in the modified wax. A real trial is two rounds: round one asks "does the additive do anything", round two asks "what wick does the new wax need". Add ₹708 once for a weighing scale and a pen thermometer at ₹354 each if you do not own them, and the first trial is a shade over ₹2,400. The calendar bill is heavier than the money. Pour on day zero, cure 21 days, burn-test days 21 to 23, pour round two on day 24, cure to day 45, burn-test to day 47. That is close to seven weeks from first pour to a defensible answer. Do I need an additive for soy wax?
Usually not. A modern soy container wax is a finished formulation — Eco Soy CSI 400 is sold as a one-pour wax requiring no additives, and CSI 464 as a single-pour container wax. Frosting, wet spots, rough tops, weak throw and tunnelling in soy are far more often caused by pour temperature, cool-down rate, cure length or wick size than by anything missing from the wax. Fix those first; they cost nothing. Additive practice belongs mainly to paraffin, pillar and blended systems.

How much additive should I use per kilogram of wax?
This page deliberately does not answer that, and you should be suspicious of any page that does without naming the grade. Dose is a property of the specific material and the specific wax system, and a percentage copied from a paraffin forum into a soy recipe is how additive trials go wrong. Get the range from the manufacturer of the grade you are holding, request it in the same message as the MSDS, and record the actual grams you used rather than the percentage you intended. Then price it: at ₹3.12 per gram, Vybar adds ₹6.24 to a 200g candle at 2g and ₹31.20 at 10g.
Is microcrystalline wax an additive or a wax?
Both, and that is why it is priced like a wax. Microcrystalline Wax Slab (Premium Grade) is a petroleum wax in its own right and is also used in small proportions to modify another wax. At ₹149 / 500g and ₹299 / 1kg — ₹298 to ₹299 per kilogram — it costs less per kilogram than every soy in the CSI range and only about ₹78 to ₹79 per kilogram more than Semi Refined Paraffin. It ships as a slab, so budget for cutting and weighing it accurately.
