Match the build to your stage, not your budget

Small candle businesses tend to overspend on equipment in one of two ways. Some buy a large melter because it looks like commitment, then pour eight candles a weekend in a machine built for 54. Others stay on a pan and a spoon long after their orders have outgrown them, losing evenings to re-melting. Both mistakes come from choosing by budget. The better question is what your pouring session looks like — how many candles, how many scents, how much wax at once — because that is what equipment has to serve.

The three builds below are example builds, assembled from individually listed CSI products; CSI does not sell them as packages. They are designed as a path: each build keeps every tool the previous one bought, so moving up never makes earlier spending redundant. The wax arithmetic throughout uses the series standard of a 200g candle at an 8% fragrance load, which is 184g of wax and 16g of oil.

Build A · ₹4,169.82 — the start-selling bench

Build A is the smallest bench that lets a business sell candles it can repeat. It replaces the stove with an electric melter, replaces measuring by eye with a scale and thermometer, and replaces hand-held wicks with fixtures. Nothing in it is decorative. The melter is 56.6% of the build; the other seven items together cost ₹1,809.82.

Build B · ₹9,252.82 — regular stock, two scents a session

Build B is for the business that restocks regularly: a market every weekend, an Instagram drop every fortnight, or a shop that reorders. The defining change is running two scents in one session. With one mini melter that means melting, scenting and pouring scent one, cleaning, then starting again. Build B's answer is not a bigger melter; it is a second 1 litre mini melter, so each scent has its own. Two minis cost ₹4,720 in all — a fifth of the 10 kg melter's price — and neither is wasted when that melter eventually arrives.

Build C · ₹34,880.82 — batch production

Build C is for the business whose sessions are measured in kilos: festive and corporate runs, wholesale orders, or a single bestselling scent poured by the tray. It adds three things to Build B. The imported Electric Wax Melter at 10 kg capacity (₹21,240), whose page states a display from 60°C to 100°C with a ±10°C deviation and that it can melt 10 kg of soy wax in approximately 30 minutes at 100°C for the 10 kg model. The 4-nozzle Wax Pouring Funnel (₹1,888), stainless steel with lever control and a rack. And two more packs of 25 steel wick holders (₹2,500), bringing the bench to 60 steel positions plus the five wooden devices — enough for a full melt of about 54 × 200g candles in one pour.

Here is how the three builds work together on a Build C batch day. None of Build A or B is retired; each tool takes a narrower job.

What each build costs per candle

Equipment is bought once and used for years, so the fairest way to compare builds is to spread the cost across the candles it helps make. The table below does that over a first year only, at three example volumes. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a forecast: it assumes the stated monthly volume for twelve months and ignores the fact that the tools keep working afterwards, which means every figure is higher than the true long-run cost.

Read the bold diagonal first: each build at the volume it is designed for costs ₹3.63 to ₹6.95 per candle in its first year. Against the wax alone in a 200g candle — ₹110.38 of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks from the ₹5,999 10 kg bag — that is small. Now read off the diagonal. Build C at 50 candles a month is ₹58.13 a candle, more than half the wax cost again, for capacity you are not using. And Build A at 800 a month looks almost free at ₹0.43, but that number hides the real cost: the hours of re-melting a 1 litre melter over and over. Past the diagonal, the constraint is no longer rupees per candle. It is hours per session.

What a small business should not buy yet

Every listed tool below is a good product. None of them belongs on a small-business bench before its moment, and together they are the most common way a first equipment budget doubles without adding a single sellable candle.

When to move up a build

Move up on evidence, not on mood. These are the signals worth acting on, and each is something you can observe in a normal pouring week.

From Build A to Build B: you pour two scents in the same session most weeks; you regularly run out of the five centering devices mid-session; tops on market stock need finishing more often than you would like; or you catch yourself cleaning the melter between scents while the first batch sets. Any two of those justify the ₹5,083 of additions. The second mini melter alone is the single biggest time-saver in the move.

From Build B to Build C: one session regularly needs several kilos of a single wax — for example, a confirmed order of 50 candles of one scent is 9,200g of wax (50 × 184g), which is a nearly full 10 kg melt; your two minis are running flat out and you are still re-melting mid-scent; and orders like that are repeating, not one-off. Buy Build C when it will be used every week. For a one-off festive order, a borrowed evening and the two minis are usually the cheaper answer.
