Start from a daily target and a standard jar

Nobody can size a production room from a floor plan. You size it from two numbers: candles per day, and the jar.

Every dimension of a candle room follows from those two numbers. The daily target sets how much wax you melt, how many wick positions you need and how many candles sit curing. The jar's stated fill and diameter set how much wax each candle takes and how many fit on a shelf. Change either and the whole room changes, which is why a setup plan starts with them written at the top — not with a list of equipment.

This guide uses one worked illustration throughout. Its assumptions are deliberately simple and clearly not measurements of any real room: replace each with your own and the method holds. The jar is a real CSI listing chosen because its page states the numbers a room plan needs — fill, diameter, height and hot-pour limit.

The mistake: sizing the room around "200 ml" jars. Many jar listings state capacity in millilitres, and a millilitre of wax is not a gram. If your standard jar is stated in ml, fill one with your wax, weigh it, and plan from that weight. The 150g jar used here states its fill in grams, which is why it makes a clean example — not because it is the only right jar. The room in six zones, in flow order

A production room works when material moves in one direction: from the store, through heat, to the cure shelf, to the packing table and out of the door. Crossing flows — hot wax carried past cartons, finished candles walked back past the melter — are where spills, contamination and lost batches happen. Keep heat at one end, cardboard at the other
Put the melter and hot air gun at the opposite end of the room from cartons and packing material, and keep the cure shelves out of the melt zone's heat and out of direct sun. The flow order does most of this for you: store at one end, melt next, pour, cure, finish, and packing by the door. If the room is small, a curtain or partition between melt and cure is cheaper than a spoiled batch.

Daily capacity: four ceilings, one answer

A room's capacity is not what its biggest machine can do. It is what its smallest ceiling allows.

Four things cap how many candles a room can produce per pour day: how much wax it melts, how many jars it can hold wicked and setting, how much hands-on work its people can do, and how many candles its cure shelves can hold. Calculate each, and the smallest is the room's capacity. Every input below is an illustrative assumption except where marked as stated; the point is the method, not the specific answer.

In this illustration the room can pour 128 candles a pour day, 28% above the 100 target — and the ceiling that sets it is the shelving, not the ₹25,960 melter. It is a common pattern, because a 21-day cure multiplies every candle's shelf time by three weeks while the melter holds each load for only part of a day. Your own ceilings will land in a different order if your jar is wider, your cure shorter or your team smaller, which is exactly why each is worth calculating separately.

The CSI principle
Size a candle room from its cure shelf backwards, not from its melter forwards.
Melters and wick positions are quick to add and quick to pay for. Cure space is floor area you have already rented, and three weeks of output has to fit on it. Plan the shelves first and the rest of the room will fit around them.

Cure shelving: the ceiling rooms often hit first

CSI does not sell racks or shelving, so this zone is bought locally — but it is planned from CSI numbers: the jar's stated diameter and height, and a standard 14–21 day cure. The table shows how the cure ceiling moves with rack count in the illustrative room. Rack size (1.2 m × 0.45 m, five tiers) and the 7.5 cm pitch are assumptions; the 7 cm jar diameter is stated.

Two lessons come out of the table. First, a fourth rack is the difference between missing and beating the target — and it is a local furniture purchase, not new equipment. Second, cure length is a capacity lever: the same four racks support 192 candles a pour day on a 14-day cure. That does not mean shortening the cure to raise output; fragrance families differ, and woody and gourmand oils often want the full 21 days. It means planning shelves for the longest cure in your range. The science is in why a candle needs a 14-day cure.

The mistake: counting shelf area, not jar positions. "Eight square metres of shelving" sounds like plenty until you realise a 7 cm jar at a 7.5 cm pitch fills a square metre with just 169 jars. Plan in positions: tier length ÷ pitch × tier depth ÷ pitch × tiers. The jar's stated 8 cm height also lets tiers sit closer than general-purpose shelving assumes — measure one lidded jar before you choose rack spacing.

Look at the jar line: one week of jars costs ₹47,200, about 1.8 times the 20 kg melter. That is the setup lesson hidden in the store zone. Equipment is a one-time cost; consumables are the recurring cash commitment, and the store has to hold them safely — wax bags off the floor and away from heat, oil sealed and out of light, glass in cartons where it will not be knocked. Does CSI supply shelving, racks or machines for a candle factory setup?
No. CSI does not list shelving, cure racks, work tables or candle-making machines (moulding, filling or wicking). It supplies the equipment that touches the wax — electric melters, scales, thermometers, mixers, wick holders and setting tools, pouring funnels and pitchers, hot air guns and cutters — plus the wax, fragrance oils, wicks, jars, care labels and boxes the room processes. Racks and tables come from local furniture or storage suppliers.
How much raw material should a candle production room store each week?
Enough for a week of pours plus a buffer. For 500 × 150g candles at 8%: about 72.45 kg of wax with a 5% allowance (7 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, ₹44,988), 6 kg of fragrance oil, 500 jars (₹47,200 in the 150g Clear Glass Jar), 500 wicks, 520 wick stickers and a 500 care-sticker roll — ₹96,851 before oil. Store wax off the floor and away from heat, and oil sealed and out of light.
