Does Cure Time Affect Soy Candle Hot Throw?

How long should I cure a soy candle before selling it? Judge and ship on day 14 for most oils. Light citrus and aquatic oils are close to their best by day 7; woods, oud, sandalwood and vanilla often keep improving to day 21. Curing longer than 21 days rarely adds much, and it costs you shelf space — ₹29,599.76 of stock for a hundred jarred candles.
Can I burn a soy candle before it has cured? You can, and for some readings you should. Pool width, pool depth, flame behaviour and wick performance can all be read from day 3, because those depend on wax and wick rather than on scent development. What you must not do is score the smell on day 3 and then change your formula.
Do fragrance oil pages and cure guidance disagree? They answer different questions. Several CSI oil pages give 24–48 or 48–72 hours — the point at which a candle is ready to burn and assess. What is actually changing in the jar while it sits
Soy wax is a solid made of fats that crystallise as they cool, and crystallisation is not instant. The candle firms up in an hour and looks finished; underneath, the crystal structure carries on organising for days, which is why the surface of a soy candle can change texture over a week and why frosting appears late rather than immediately. Fragrance oil is dissolved in that wax rather than chemically bound to it, so as the structure settles, the oil finds its final arrangement inside it.
That arrangement is what decides hot throw. When the candle is lit, only the oil that can leave the warm liquid surface reaches the room. A freshly poured candle has some of its oil positioned in ways that make it less available at the pool surface, and after a week or two more of it is held so that it releases steadily and evenly. You are not making the oil stronger. You are letting the wax finish organising around it, so that what is there can get out.
Two consequences follow directly, and they are the practical heart of the page. First, the effect is front-loaded and then flattens: most of the change happens in the first two weeks, less in the third, very little after that. Second, the effect is bigger for some oils than others, because heavy base molecules take longer to settle into a releasable state than light ones do. A citrus oil is close to its final self at day 7; an oud is often still gaining at day 21. That is why one schedule for the whole range is a compromise, and why the family table further down is worth pinning above your bench.
The cure numbers CSI's pages publish, and how to reconcile them
If you read a wax page and an oil page on the same afternoon you will find 48 hours, 1–2 weeks, 24–48 hours and 48–72 hours, and it is fair to wonder which one to believe. The resolution is that a wax page is telling you when a candle is safe and sensible to burn-test, and an oil page is telling you when that particular composition is ready to be assessed in wax. Neither is telling you the last day on which scent can still improve. Here is what the pages actually state.

The practical reading is a two-stage one. Stage one, at 48–72 hours, is a process check: is the surface acceptable, is the wick standing straight, does the candle light and burn sensibly. Stage two, at day 14, is the product verdict: is this scent, at this load, in this jar, good enough to sell. Makers who collapse those two stages into one burn on day three end up reformulating perfectly good candles, and makers who skip stage one entirely discover a wick problem two weeks later than they needed to.
A cure schedule by fragrance family
Heavier compositions generally take longer to reach their final behaviour in soy, and lighter ones arrive sooner and then, if anything, quietly lose their brightest notes. That gives a practical split: light families are judged and shipped at day 7 to 14; heavy families are judged at day 14 and confirmed at day 21. There is a commercial reading of that table as well as a technical one. If you sell a mixed range into a festive window, pour the heavy families first and the fresh ones last, because the heavy ones need the extra week and the fresh ones do not. That single sequencing decision buys you about seven days of production capacity without changing anything you make. For a hundred candles at ₹201.60 each in materials, it is the difference between a comfortable October and a frantic one.
The five-jar cure ladder — prove it in your own room
This is the cheapest experiment in the whole series and the one whose result you will use most often. Five jars, one melt, one wick, one oil, one load — the only variable is the calendar. Two honest caveats about this test. It uses one nose, which fatigues, so the scores are comparative rather than absolute — the shape of the curve is the result, not the individual numbers. And it holds the room constant, which means it tells you about your room; a maker in Kochi and a maker in Jaipur may get different curves from the same wax because their storage conditions differ. That is not a flaw in the test. That is the reason to run it yourself instead of copying a schedule off a blog.
Cure conditions in India: heat, monsoon, lids and dust
Cure is a storage process, and Indian storage is not gentle. A top-floor room in Ahmedabad, Nagpur or Delhi can sit above 40°C for weeks; a workshop in Mumbai, Kochi or Kolkata spends the monsoon at high humidity; almost every Indian workshop has more dust than a European one. Each of those changes the outcome, and none of them is a wax fault.

The lid question comes up constantly and deserves a straight answer. Cure with lids on. An open jar loses its lightest, brightest molecules to the room — which is a good way to scent your workshop and a poor way to build a candle. Lids also keep dust out and keep the surface clean enough to photograph. If your jars have no lids, cure them in a closed carton or a covered plastic crate; anything that stops air moving across the surface will do the same job.
What a cure costs — and what skipping one costs
At the series unit a jarred candle is ₹119.80 of wax, ₹75.90 of oil, ₹5.90 of wick and ₹94.40 of glass — ₹296.00 in materials. A hundred of them is ₹29,599.76 sitting on a shelf. Holding that for 14 days rather than 3 is eleven extra days of stock, and for a small brand it is genuinely the main argument against a long cure: money in jars is money not in fragrance oil for the next batch.

That last row is the one to weigh carefully, because it is the row where a supplier makes money and the calendar does not. The Vybar Additive page describes it as compatible with soy, paraffin, coconut and blends, used at 0.5–2% of wax weight with the lower end for soy, added to melted wax before fragrance and colour, and claims improved fragrance retention, a smoother surface and less mottling and sweating. Those are page claims and they may well hold in your formula. What an additive cannot do is substitute for a fortnight, and single-pour soys such as Eco Soy CSI 400 are sold as needing no additives at all. Test Vybar as its own controlled experiment against a cured control jar, or you will never know which of the two changed your result.
The opposite error costs more. A hundred candles poured, judged at 72 hours, declared weak and discounted to clear is ₹20,159.76 of materials earning a fraction of what it should — a 30% markdown on that batch alone is ₹6,047.93 of margin handed away for the want of eleven days. Cure is the only improvement in this craft that is free at the point of use, and the only one most makers skip.
What cure does not fix
Cure is a multiplier on what is already in the jar. If the underlying build is wrong, waiting simply gives you a well-rested wrong candle, and three weeks of shelf space have bought you nothing. These are the faults that will still be there on day 21.
Two more that cure will not touch: an oil whose composition is genuinely thin in the base, which is a selection problem rather than a timing one; and a candle assessed in a 20 m² living room with the fan running, which is a testing problem. Both feel like cure failures because the symptom is the same — a candle that smells less than you hoped — and both will survive any amount of waiting.
The useful summary is a sequencing one. Read the pool on day 3 and fix the wick if it is wrong, because that costs one re-pour and nothing else. Read the surface at 72 hours and fix the load if oil is beading, because that is a formulation error you do not want repeated across a hundred jars. Then, and only then, let the calendar do its work and judge the scent on day 14. Makers who run those three checks in that order almost never need to change their wax.
A cure log that survives a busy month
By the third week of October a working Indian candle studio has several batches curing at once, in jars that look identical. Without a log, the schedule collapses into guesswork and the cure data you paid eleven days for is gone. The log does not need software. It needs a date on every jar and one line per batch.

Practically: a Candle Care Stickers Roll at ₹413.00 for 500 or ₹699.00 for 1000 gives you something to write the date on that will still be stuck to the base in three weeks, at roughly ₹0.83 a candle. A notebook page per batch beats a phone note you will not find. And keep the day-21 jar of anything you launch — six months later, when a customer says a scent has changed, a reference jar with a date on it is the only way to know whether it has.
One last thing worth logging, because it is the question that starts most cure arguments: the date you first sold from a batch. If a scent generates complaints, the pattern is usually visible immediately — the complaints cluster around the batch that shipped fastest. Reviewers do not write “this was under-cured”. They write that the candle smelled lovely cold and did not fill the room, which is the same sentence in customer language.
