How Much Wax Do I Need to Make 1,000 Candles?

1,000 candles in kilos: the one formula

At 1,000 candles, a wrong assumption of 20g per candle is 20 kg of wax — two bags you either run short of mid-pour or pay for and store for months. The formula is: wax (kg) = number of candles × finished candle weight (g) × (1 − fragrance load) ÷ 1,000. Fragrance load is the share of the finished candle that is oil, so at 8% a 200g candle is 16g of oil and 184g of wax. Multiply by 1,000 and you have 184 kg of wax and 16 kg of oil. The oil side of that calculation — how many kilos, how many scents, which bottles — is worked through in how much fragrance oil for 1,000 candles. This page stays with the wax.

The candle count is usually firm. The finished weight is where plans go wrong, because many jars state millilitres, not grams, and real ranges mix sizes. The load matters least: each percentage point on a 200g candle is 2g, or 2 kg across 1,000 candles — a fifth of a bag.

The size × load matrix at 1,000 candles

Eight candle sizes, three loads, and the kilos of wax each needs for 1,000 candles. The last two columns add the 3–5% allowance to the 8% figure and round to whole 10 kg bags. Use 13% only on a wax whose page states that ceiling — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 do; CSI 464 states up to 10%.

Read the table across a row and then down a column, and the lesson is obvious. Across the 200g row, going from 8% to 13% saves 10 kg — exactly one bag, and only on a wax rated for 13%. Down the 8% column, going from 200g to 250g adds 46 kg. A 50g change in candle size moves the wax order 11.5 times as much as a two-point change in load. When someone asks "how much wax for 1,000 candles?", the only honest first reply is "what size?"

The load still matters — just not to the wax bill. It moves weight from wax to oil, which costs several times as much per gram: 16 kg of oil at 8%, 20 kg at 10%, 26 kg at 13%. Real ranges are mixed sizes

A festive range usually spans a gift-set votive, an everyday jar and a hero candle, so plan the wax line by line. The worked mix uses CSI vessels whose pages state a fill in grams: the Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram ("~70g wax fill"), the Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid ("Capacity: 120 gm"), the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid ("150g fill capacity") and the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid in its 500 gm size.

The mixed range needs 41.4 kg less wax than the "1,000 × 200g" headline — four bags that would otherwise be ordered, paid for and stored. At ₹5,999 a 10 kg bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, that is ₹23,996 of cash that did not need to leave the business. The 100 hero candles are a tenth of the units but take 46 kg — almost a third of the wax. If cash is tight, pour that line last, after the smaller lines have proved the scents.

From kilos to bags, wax by wax

No CSI soy wax is listed in a 190 kg pack, so the listed cost of a 1,000-candle wax order is built from the largest listed packs. Five soy waxes list a 10 kg bag; Natural Soy Pearl Wax also lists a 50 kg pack; Eco Soy CSI 400 tops out at 5 kg. The table prices 190 kg — 184 kg plus about 3% — for each, and shows what the wax puts into one 200g candle. These are listed ceilings. A 190 kg order is exactly the kind of quantity to quote on WhatsApp, and this page does not guess what that quote will be.

The spread between the cheapest and dearest container soy wax on this order is ₹45,182 on one invoice, but only ₹43.76 per 200g candle. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the 5 kg bag is fractionally cheaper per kilo (₹599 against ₹599.90), so 38 × 5 kg lists ₹171 below 19 × 10 kg — a real, tiny saving that costs nineteen more bags to open and rotate. And Eco Soy CSI 400 means 38 bags for one run: plan the shelf space first.

Natural Soy Pearl Wax's 50 kg pack does not lower the price per kilo — ₹424.80 at 10 kg and at 50 kg. Four 50 kg packs (200 kg, ₹84,960) cover the full 5% allowance; three plus four 10 kg bags give exactly 190 kg. Choose on handling, not price.

Which wax deserves 190 kg

Melter loads and pour days for 1,000 candles

Next, divide the wax by your melter. The Mini Electric Wax/Soap Melter states a 1 litre capacity. A litre of melted wax weighs less than a kilo, so 184 kg would take well over 180 fills — a testing tool, not a 1,000-candle tool. The Electric Wax Melter (Imported) is listed in 10 kg and 20 kg capacities. Its page states that it can melt 10 kg of soy wax in approximately 30 minutes at 100°C and that the display ranges from 60°C to 100°C. It also says it can "create 80 candles at a time", without saying what size of candle; for a 200g candle at 8%, 10 kg of wax is about 54 candles, so plan with your own size.

The last column divides the price across a single run — a deliberately harsh view; over four such runs it is ₹5.31 a candle. The melting time is the stated figure for 10 kg of soy wax at 100°C and covers melting only. Working temperatures come from the wax, not the melter's maximum: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state fragrance in at 80–90°C, while CSI 468 states a 58–60°C pour, so bring each load to the wax's own figure and check with a pen thermometer rather than the dial alone. One CSI customer, reviewing the 10 kg melter, describes 10 kg melting "in mere 20-30 minutes" — a customer's experience, useful as a sense check, not a specification.

Now turn loads into pour days. Suppose — as an illustration, not a benchmark — your team pours four 10 kg loads a day. That is about 217 × 200g candles a day, so 190 kg is five pour days. With a 14–21 day cure, the last pour day sets when the whole run is ready: ship date − 21 days − 5 pour days − time for the wax to arrive and be checked. One delivery or three

Listed per-kilo prices are flat or near-flat from 10 kg upward on most CSI soy waxes, so one 190 kg delivery does not lower the listed price. The choice is about cash, space and risk. The table uses Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999 per 10 kg.

For a one-off run, one drop is simplest. Over a quarter, three drops keep under ₹42,000 of wax on the shelf and let the SKU split follow sales. Either way, keep bags sealed, dated and off the floor, and open the oldest first. Only CSI 464 and CSI 468 state a shelf life on their pages; for the others, rotate strictly.
