How to Store Soy Wax During Indian Summer

Does soy wax go bad in the heat? Rarely, and not quickly. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and CSI 468 both state a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage. Heat usually changes the form — flakes fuse into a cake, chunks consolidate — which costs you convenience, not the ₹5,074.00 pack.
Should I keep soy wax in the fridge? No. Fridge storage swaps a heat problem for a condensation problem: every time the bag comes out into a warm room, water forms on cold wax. A shaded interior shelf at room temperature, sealed, beats refrigeration in every Indian city.
How do I know if heat has damaged my soy wax? Look, smell, then test-melt 100 g — about ₹50.74 of CSI 464. A fused block is fine. An oily film, a flat cardboard-like smell, or a test candle that throws noticeably weaker than the same recipe did in winter are the signals worth acting on.
What an Indian summer actually does to a bag of soy wax
Soy wax is a hardened plant fat. Like most fats, it does not switch from solid to liquid at a single temperature — it softens across a range, getting waxier and then greasier as it warms. That matters for storage because the published melting point is the top of the range, not the point where change begins. Flakes will cling to each other, and chunks will consolidate under their own weight, long before anything looks melted.
So the first thing a hot store room does is change the form of your stock. A 10 kg bag of flakes that spends April under a terrace slab can come down as a slab itself. Nothing has been lost: ₹5,074.00 of wax is still ₹5,074.00 of wax. What you have lost is the ability to scoop 200 g onto a scale in four seconds, which is exactly the convenience you paid for when you chose flakes over a block.
The second thing heat does is speed everything else up. Air, light and warmth work on plant fats together: as general practice across the industry, plant-derived waxes stored warm, open and in the light for long periods develop a flat, faintly cardboard-like or old-oil note. It is slow — both the CSI 464 and CSI 468 pages state a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage — but the conditions in that sentence are doing real work. Warm, open and bright is not what they describe.
The third thing is contamination, and it is the one Indian makers under-rate. An opened bag in a warm room is an excellent sponge for smells: an unsealed 5 kg bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹2,995.00) sitting next to open fragrance oils, in a room where someone cooks, will carry some of that background with it into a candle you were trying to make smell of eucalyptus. Warm wax picks it up faster than cool wax.

Anything blended and anything soft deserves the coolest shelf you have.
The published figures that decide where your wax can sit
Read the table below as a ranking of vulnerability, not a warning. A wax whose page gives a melting point of 50–53°C is telling you something concrete about a shelf under a hot roof. A wax whose page gives 80–90°C as its working range for melting and pouring is telling you that a hot afternoon is nowhere near it. Neither is telling you that a particular storage temperature is safe, because that figure is not published for any of them, and we will not invent one.

Two honest gaps in that table. First, CSI does not publish a melting point for Eco Soy CSI 400, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks as such, Soy Pillar Wax, Natural Soy Pearl Wax or Soy Butter Wax — the melting and pouring temperatures on those pages are process instructions, not thresholds for storage. Second, shelf life is published only for CSI 464 and CSI 468. For the rest, the honest answer is that we do not have a published figure and you should ask on WhatsApp rather than trust a number you found on a foreign blog.
Map the coolest metre you already own
Heat reaches a shelf by three routes: through the roof, through a sun-facing wall, and through the air of the room. Rank the spaces you have against all three and the answer usually picks itself. Under the terrace slab on a top floor is the worst shelf in the building on a May afternoon. The inner wall of a ground-floor room, behind a door, at knee height, is usually the best one — and it is where nobody wants to store anything, which is why the wax ends up on the balcony.

Two practical rules that come out of that table. Keep bags off the floor on a plank, a pallet or the lowest shelf rather than on bare cement or stone, both for airflow and for the monsoon habits you will need in a few months (wet spots have their own causes, but a clean dry bag never hurt). And separate your fragrance oils from your wax: oils belong in their own closed box, not sharing a shelf with an opened 5 kg bag.
The four-step summer storage routine
Reading heat damage — and when the wax is still perfectly good
Work through the signs in order — shape, surface, smell, then behaviour in a test melt. Shape tells you the least and frightens people the most. Smell tells you the most and is the one nobody checks.

The test melt is the arbiter, and it is cheap. One hundred grams of CSI 464 is ₹50.74 of wax. Melt it to the temperature on its page, add your usual oil at your usual load, pour a single jar, cure it the way you always do, and compare it with your notes. If you do not keep notes, this is the month to start; a batch book is the only way heat damage ever gets proved rather than suspected.
Buying cadence: smaller packs more often, and what it really costs
The usual assumption is that buying in bulk is cheaper and buying small is a luxury. Across the CSI soy grades in September 2026 that assumption is mostly wrong. Here is the arithmetic for 10 kg of each grade bought as one large pack against the same 10 kg bought in small packs.

Against those differences, set the cost of one bad decision. A 5 kg pack is ₹2,995.00 of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or ₹3,185.00 of CSI 468, roughly 25 candles at 200 g each. You do not have to lose the wax outright for the maths to turn: a batch that throws a little weaker than your customers expect, poured from stock that spent May under a tin roof, costs more in reorders than every per-kg premium in that table.
The honest counterweight is delivery. Ordering four times instead of once means four consignments, and two of the reviews at the top of this page raise exactly that point about CSI's charges — they are quoted at checkout and they are not trivial for small orders. So the sensible middle is not weekly buying: it is holding what your coolest shelf can genuinely keep, ordering roughly monthly through the hot months, and asking on WhatsApp before splitting a large order, because bulk pricing is quoted there rather than published.
Three Indian workshops in May, costed
Delhi, second-floor flat, terrace above the bedroom
Forty-plus degrees outdoors in May and a slab that holds the heat into the night. The store cupboard is on the terrace-facing wall of the bedroom, which is the worst shelf in the flat. The maker pours about eight 200 g candles a week, so six weeks of stock is roughly 10 kg — but not on that wall. The fix costs nothing: move the bins to the bottom of the wardrobe on the corridor-side wall, keep 2 kg of working stock in the kitchen cupboard, and buy CSI 464 as 1 kg packs, where the rate is ₹507.40/kg whether you buy one or ten. Mumbai, one-room studio with an air-conditioner
The heat is milder than Delhi's but the air is heavy, and the AC runs only when the maker is in. That daily cycle — cool while working, warm and humid overnight — is worse for an open bag than steady warmth would be, because each cycle moves air in and out of the packaging. Here the sealing step matters more than the location: press the air out, tape the bag, use a lidded bin, and never store wax in the fridge or the AC's direct blast. Coimbatore, a rented godown unit with a tin roof

Under a tin roof, the top of the rack is the hottest place in the unit and the floor is the coolest, which inverts the instinct to keep heavy bags low only for safety. Rack the wax on the lowest two shelves on the inside wall, on a plank rather than the floor, three bags deep at most, with the CSI 468 lowest of all. Then measure: a ₹354.00 thermometer on the top shelf and another at knee height for a week will tell the owner more about this unit than any advice on this page, and it decides whether the next order should be 10 kg at a time or 5 kg twice.
What is not published, and what to ask for
CSI does not publish a maximum storage temperature for any soy grade, a storage humidity range, a batch or lot date on the product page, or a shelf life for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Eco Soy CSI 400, Soy Pillar Wax, Natural Soy Pearl Wax or Soy Butter Wax. Two grades publish 60 months in cool, dry storage: CSI 464 and CSI 468. That is the complete published picture, and anything beyond it that you read as a CSI figure is somebody's guess.
What you can ask for on WhatsApp: bulk pricing beyond the listed pack sizes, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation, which is the paperwork most buyers actually want when they are planning storage for a larger quantity. If you are holding stock for a contract order or a retail listing, ask for it in writing before you buy rather than after.
And one thing worth saying against our own interest: if your measured shelf sits comfortably cool, the summer changes nothing about how you buy. Hold the 10 kg pack, pour 50 candles from it, and ignore every word above about splitting orders. The advice on this page is for hot shelves, not for everyone with a calendar that says May.
