How to Store Soy Wax During Monsoon in India

How should soy wax be stored in the monsoon? Original bag with the air pressed out, taped shut, inside a lidded bin, on a plank or rack about 100–150 mm clear of the floor and 50–100 mm off the outer wall. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states 60 months of shelf life in cool, dry storage and asks you to keep it away from sunlight and moisture; the CSI 468 page asks that it be kept sealed when not in use.
Why is there water inside my wax bag? Because warm, wet air was sealed in with the wax and then the room cooled overnight. Water condenses on the coolest surface it can find, which is the wax. Open bags briefly, close them in the driest part of the day, and let a cool parcel stand for two to three hours before opening it.
Can I still use soy wax that got damp? Usually, once it is dry. Spread it on a clean tray in a dry room, let it stand, then test-melt 100 g — about ₹50.74 of CSI 464 — and watch for spitting or foaming as it heats. Pour one jar, cure it normally, and judge that jar rather than the whole 5 kg pack.
What damp actually reaches — and what it leaves alone
Start with the physics, because it saves you money. Soy wax is a hardened plant fat. Water does not dissolve into it, and it does not pull moisture out of humid air the way salt, rice, cotton or cardboard do. Leave a sealed bag of soy flakes in a room at ninety per cent humidity for a month and the flakes are not going to be wet. What can happen is that water arrives on them as liquid: from condensation, from a wet shelf, from a leaking roof, from a scoop that was washed and not dried, or from a bag that was opened and re-closed with humid air trapped inside.
Meanwhile the things sitting beside the wax are genuinely absorbent. Eco Candle Wicks are described on their page as made from natural fibres, cotton and paper. Cardboard cartons, paper labels, printed care cards and the adhesive on Candle Wick Stickers all care about humidity much more than wax does. That reordering is the single most useful thing on this page: protect the fibres first, the wax second.
The south-west monsoon reaches the Kerala coast around the start of June and covers most of the country by about mid-July, withdrawing through September and October. In Mumbai, Kochi, Mangalore and Kolkata the air stays heavy for weeks between spells, not just on the days it rains — which is why the store has to be set up once, in May, rather than improvised on a wet Tuesday in July.

Read the last two columns of that table together and the priority becomes obvious. A 500-pack of C1 wicks (₹2,950.00) is worth ₹413.00 more than a 5 kg pack of CSI 464 (₹2,537.00), and it is the item most likely to be affected by a wet fortnight. A wick is also the cheapest component inside a finished candle: at ₹5.90 it is about 2.4% of the ₹250.87 of materials in a 200 g candle with a ₹94.40 jar. The cheapest part decides whether the other ninety-seven per cent lights properly.
The condensation trap: how water gets inside a sealed bag
Warm air holds more water than cool air. When warm, wet air touches a surface that is cooler than its dew point, the water it can no longer hold comes out as liquid on that surface. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains both of the ways damp reaches wax in an Indian monsoon.
Route one: air sealed in. You open a bag at three in the afternoon in Kochi, scoop out 400 g, roll the top over and put it back. The bag now contains a litre or two of very wet air. By four in the morning the store room has cooled several degrees and that trapped water has nowhere to go but onto the wax and the inside of the bag. You come back a week later and find droplets, and blame the rain.
Route two: a cool parcel opened into a warm room. A consignment that has travelled overnight is colder than your workshop. Cut it open straight away in humid air and condensation forms on everything inside — bag surfaces, jars, wick packets — before you can put it away. Two to three hours standing, unopened, in the room where it will live costs you nothing and removes the problem entirely.
Building the dry corner: floor, wall, rack and roof
Cement and stone floors draw moisture upward through the monsoon; the effect is worst at ground level and in older buildings without a damp course. Outer walls, especially the one that takes the driving rain, stay wet for days after a spell and give that moisture back to the air inside. Anything resting directly on either surface is sitting in the wettest part of the room.
So the layout in the diagram above is not decorative. Lift everything about 100–150 mm off the floor on a plank, pallet or the lowest shelf of a rack. Keep the rack 50–100 mm clear of the outer wall so air can move behind it. Put the stock that suffers most from damp — wicks, labels, cartons — in the highest, driest bay, sealed in a box. Wax goes in the middle. Glass and tins, which tolerate humidity, take the lowest bay. These are general godown practices, not CSI specifications, and they apply to any material you store.
Silica gel, newspaper and the other things makers try
CSI does not sell silica gel, storage bins, dehumidifiers or racking, so there is nothing to sell you in this section. Here is the honest scoring of the methods Indian makers actually use.

One honest caveat on that last row. Ordering more often means more consignments, and delivery charges are quoted at checkout — two customers in the reviews above have told us plainly that they find those charges high. So do not shred a single order into six on our advice. Buy what your dry corner can genuinely hold: for a maker pouring ten 200 g candles a week, a 5 kg pack of CSI 464 (₹2,537.00) is about two and a half weeks of wax, and a 10 kg pack (₹5,074.00) is about five.
Checking a monsoon-stored bag before you pour from it
Run it on any bag that has been open during the rains, on any pack that arrived in a soaked carton, and on every bag before a festive production run. The point is not to be suspicious of the wax. The point is that finding out on pour day, with 25 jars lined up, is expensive.

Then pour one jar and cure it the way you always do. With Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing, so a check run in the first week of October still clears your stock in time for a Diwali dispatch on 8 November 2026. One test candle is ₹250.87 of materials with a ₹94.40 jar. Twenty-five of them, poured from a bag you did not check, are ₹6,271.70.
Monsoon wax, Diwali candles: the timing that catches makers out
Work the calendar backwards. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. Allowing 14 to 21 days of cure plus courier time, festive candles should be poured by about the middle of October. Wax bought for that run is usually ordered in August or September — which means it is bought, delivered and stored through the monsoon and its withdrawal. If your store is not sorted out by June, the stock for your most valuable month of the year is the stock with the worst storage history.
That is also why the checking protocol matters more in September than in any other month. A maker planning 100 candles at 200 g needs 20 kg of wax: two 10 kg packs of CSI 464 at ₹5,074.00 each, or the equivalent in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹5,999.00 for 10 kg). Add 100 Eco C1 wicks at ₹590.00 and jars, and the materials for that run are worth more than any storage fix on this page costs.

One more monsoon-specific habit worth building: keep a short batch record that includes where the wax was stored and when it was opened. When a customer writes in November about a candle that burned oddly, a three-line note from September is the difference between knowing and guessing. What is not published, and what to ask on WhatsApp
What is published: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage and asks you to store it away from sunlight and moisture. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states 60 months in cool, dry storage and asks that it be kept sealed when not in use. That is the whole of the published storage guidance for the CSI soy range.
What is not published: any maximum storage humidity, any maximum storage temperature, a shelf life for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Eco Soy CSI 400 or Soy Pillar Wax, and any guidance on drying wax that has become damp. Ask on WhatsApp and you will get a straight answer or an honest “not published”, along with bulk pricing, GST invoicing and MSDS and IFRA documentation. What you will not get from us is a number invented to sound authoritative.
And the sentence that costs us money: if your store is genuinely dry — a sealed bin on a rack in an interior room — the monsoon changes nothing about how much wax you buy or how long you keep it. Hold the 10 kg pack at ₹5,074.00, pour through the season, and spend the attention you saved on the wick box instead.
