I Use 2,000 Wicks Every Month — Since Wicks Are Inexpensive and Easy to Store, Should I Keep Several Months of Inventory?
शेयर करना
Why does cheapness justify depth here but not elsewhere? Because the wick is 2.86% of a candle's material cost and 100% of whether the candle exists. At 2,000 candles a month the four material lines are roughly ₹1,87,738 of wax, ₹1,54,542 of oil, ₹59,000 of jars and ₹11,800 of wicks. A month of wick cover costs about one-sixteenth of a month of wax cover and buys the same insurance.
Is there a bulk discount to chase? On the ones you are most likely to use, no. Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each for C1 and ₹9.44 each for C2 at every listed pack from 10 to 1,000, and Cotton Braided Wicks are a flat ₹12 each to 1,000. One wick does step down steeply — see Performance Wooden Wicks below.
What actually goes wrong with deep wick cover? Obsolescence, not cost. Six months of a wick that no longer matches your jar is six months of a wick you will never use, and the arithmetic that made the depth cheap does nothing to make the wrong size useful.
The four properties that make a wick different
Most inventory advice warns you off deep cover, and it is right to, because on most materials depth buys a small reduction in risk for a large commitment of cash. Wicks break that pattern on four counts at once, and it is worth naming them individually because any material sharing all four deserves the same treatment — and any material missing one of them does not.
| Property | Wicks | Soy wax | Fragrance oil | Glass jars |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Share of material cost | 2.86% — the smallest line | 45.45% — the largest | 37.41% | 14.28% |
| Shared across SKUs? | Usually one or two sizes across the whole range | Yes, almost always one wax | No — dedicated per scent | Often one or two, sometimes design-locked |
| Loss after purchase | None in normal handling | A few per cent to spills and jug residue | Small, to decanting | Breakage — real, and your own figure to measure |
| Storage demand | Low. Boxes on a shelf | Moderate. Bags, sealed, off the floor | Low, but must be away from wax | High. Bulky and must not be stacked carelessly |
| Verdict on cover | Deep — 3 months | Moderate — around 1.5 months | Per scent — 1.1 to 1.4 months | Short in months, grossed up for breakage |
Read the first two rows together, because together they are the whole case. The wick is simultaneously the cheapest thing on the bench and one of the most widely shared. Cheap plus specialised would justify nothing; expensive plus shared would be a painful trade-off. Cheap plus shared is the rare combination where buying a lot of cover costs almost nothing and protects almost everything.
The third row matters more than it looks. A wick does not spill, does not evaporate, does not break in transit in any meaningful quantity, and does not need to be grossed up for yield loss the way a jar does. Two thousand wicks received is two thousand wicks pourable, which means your cover arithmetic is honest rather than optimistic — and that is not true of every line on the table.
One honest absence. None of the CSI wick pages state a shelf life, and this guide does not invent one. The practical position is that a cotton or paper-cored wick kept dry, boxed and away from oil is a stable thing on a shelf, which is an observation about handling rather than a published specification. If a wick has been sitting in a damp corner for eight months, test one before you pour three hundred.
The cost of cover, month by month
Here is the whole decision as a table. Four wick types, five depths, and the cash each policy puts on a shelf at 2,000 a month. Nothing here is a volume rate — on three of the four wicks the per-piece price does not change with pack size, so these are simple multiplications.
| Cover | Wicks held | Eco C1 · ₹5.90 ea | Eco C2 · ₹9.44 ea | Cotton Braided · ₹12 ea | Performance Wooden · ₹41.30 ea |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | 2,000 | ₹11,800 | ₹18,880 | ₹24,000 | ₹82,600 |
| 2 months | 4,000 | ₹23,600 | ₹37,760 | ₹48,000 | ₹1,65,200 |
| 3 months | 6,000 | ₹35,400 | ₹56,640 | ₹72,000 | ₹2,47,800 |
| 6 months | 12,000 | ₹70,800 | ₹1,13,280 | ₹1,44,000 | ₹4,95,600 |
| 12 months | 24,000 | ₹1,41,600 | ₹2,26,560 | ₹2,88,000 | ₹9,91,200 |
The Eco C1 column is the one to sit with. ₹35,400 buys a quarter of production cover on a component that stops every single candle you make. Set that next to the cost of the same protection on wax — three months of 370 kg-a-month consumption at CSI 464 pricing is ₹5,63,214 — and the asymmetry is obvious. No sane business holds three months of wax at this output. Every sane business can afford three months of wicks.
The Performance Wooden column is deliberately there to show the other side. At ₹41.30 each in the 100-pack, a wooden-wick business at 2,000 a month is holding ₹2,47,800 for three months of cover — twenty-two per cent of a quarter's material spend on one component. "Wicks are cheap" is a statement about cotton wicks at ₹5.90 and ₹9.44, not about every wick. If your range runs on wooden wicks, the cheapness argument does not apply to you and you should hold one to one and a half months like any other significant line.
A note on how the month converts, because it is slightly different from wax and oil. Wicks are consumed in whole units, one per single-wick candle, with no load percentage and no fill weight in the arithmetic. Two thousand wicks is two thousand candles, which is why the wick count doubles as a clean cross-check on everything else: if your wax consumption implies 2,400 candles and you bought 2,000 wicks, one of those two figures is wrong. Multi-wick designs break the one-to-one rule, so count those SKUs at their actual wick count rather than at unit volume.
The flat ladder — and the one exception
Deep cover is often justified with a bulk discount, and that justification does not apply here — which, counter-intuitively, makes the case stronger rather than weaker. If the 1,000-pack were cheaper per wick, part of your reason for holding three months would be a price you were chasing. It is not. The per-piece price is the same whether you buy ten wicks or a thousand, so the depth decision is clean: it is purely about risk and cash, with no discount clouding it.
| Wick | Smallest pack | Mid pack | Largest listed pack | Per-piece movement | What it means for cover |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 10 · ₹59 (₹5.90) | 100 · ₹590 (₹5.90) | 1,000 · ₹5,900 (₹5.90) | Flat — ₹5.90 throughout | Buy the depth you want, not the pack that "saves" |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2) | 20 · ₹188.80 (₹9.44) | 100 · ₹944 (₹9.44) | 1,000 · ₹9,440 (₹9.44) | Flat — ₹9.44 throughout | Same. The 10-wick pack is currently sold out |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | 10 · ₹120 (₹12) | 100 · ₹1,200 (₹12) | 1,000 · ₹12,000 (₹12) | Flat — ₹12 throughout | Same. Its page states it is for candles over 8 cm |
| Performance Wooden Wicks | 10 · ₹590 (₹59) | 50 · ₹2,360 (₹47.20) | 100 · ₹4,130 (₹41.30) | ₹59 → ₹47.20 → ₹41.30 | Buy in 100-packs. At 2,000 a month that saves ₹35,400 against 10-packs |
The wooden-wick row is worth a moment even if you do not use them, because it is the clearest pack ladder in the whole CSI range. The product page's own 50- and 100-wick variants are titled with savings, and the arithmetic bears it out: ₹59 each at 10, ₹47.20 at 50 and ₹41.30 at 100. At 2,000 wicks a month, buying twenty 100-packs costs ₹82,600 against ₹1,18,000 for two hundred 10-packs — a difference of ₹35,400 every month, which is coincidentally the entire cost of three months of Eco C1 cover. On this one wick, pack size is a pricing decision of the first order.
The practical reading for the three flat ladders is simpler. Buy the number of packs your cover policy calls for, in whatever combination is convenient to receive and store. Six 1,000-wick packs and sixty 100-wick packs cost exactly the same ₹35,400 on C1, so choose on handling: fewer, larger boxes if you have shelf space and a sealed store; more, smaller boxes if you want to open one at a time and keep the rest untouched.
Three wicks, three cover policies
Three wicks, each with a different right answer on depth. Every card shows all listed packs with the per-piece price. Choose the wick on your own burn test first — none of these pages states a jar diameter for the Eco sizes, so the match is yours to establish — and then set the depth from the table above.
| Size | Price | Per piece |

| Thin (C1) / 10 Wicks | ₹59 | ₹5.90 |

One accessory belongs in the same order, because it is consumed one-to-one with the wick and nobody remembers it until a pour day. Candle Wick Stickers list at ₹100 for a sheet of 40 — ₹2.50 each — so 2,000 candles a month needs fifty sheets, ₹5,000, and three months needs a hundred and fifty. The 100-sticker sheet is currently sold out; the larger 2 mm stickers list at ₹249 for 40. Same logic as the wick: trivial per unit, total stoppage if it is missing.
The real limit is obsolescence, not cash
Everything above argues for depth. This section is the brake, and it is the part most "wicks are cheap" advice leaves out. A wick is not a generic commodity like wax; it is matched — to a jar diameter, to a wax, to a fragrance load. Change any one of those three and the correct wick can change with it. Which means a deep wick holding is only cheap insurance for as long as the match holds.
| Change | Why the wick stops matching | Risk of it happening | Cost if you held 6 months of C1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| You change jar diameter | Melt-pool width is set by the wick against the glass; a wider jar needs more wick | Moderate — jars get discontinued and redesigned | Up to ₹70,800 of the wrong size |
| You change wax | Different waxes draw differently, so the wick that gave a full pool may now tunnel or soot | Low if your wax is settled | Up to ₹70,800, usually partly salvageable |
| You raise the fragrance load | More oil changes how the wax feeds the flame; the same wick can behave differently | Moderate — loads get tuned | Partial. Often the same size still works |
| You add a second wick to a design | Two smaller wicks replace one larger, so your shared size shifts | Low, but it changes the count not just the size | Mostly salvageable — the smaller size gets used faster |
Notice that none of those four is unlikely, and none of them is the kind of thing you plan a year ahead. That is why the recommendation is three months rather than six or twelve, even though twelve would still only be ₹1,41,600 of C1. Three months is long enough that a slipped delivery, a festive surge or a supplier gap cannot stop you, and short enough that a design change costs you weeks of stock rather than a season of it. Twelve months of a wick is a bet that your product will not change for a year, and that bet is worth less than the ₹1,06,200 of extra cash it costs.
Setting the wick policy in five steps
Fifteen minutes, once, then two minutes a month. The only part that needs care is the first step, because almost every wick stock-out at this volume is a counting failure rather than a buying failure.
Storing and counting 6,000 wicks
"Easy to store" is the second half of the title's premise and it holds up, with one honest caveat about what is and is not published.
The caveat first. None of the Eco Candle Wicks variants state a length or a diameter on the product page — the summary of that page records wick size and jar diameter as not stated, and notes that the C1 and C2 names appear only in the Shopify variant titles. The Cotton Braided Wicks page does state a height of 10.16 cm and that they are engineered for candles over 8 cm in diameter. So you cannot compute a shelf volume for 6,000 Eco wicks from published dimensions, and this guide will not pretend to. Measure the packs you receive and size your shelf from that.
What can be said without inventing anything is comparative, and it is the honest version of "easy to store". Six thousand wicks arrive as six boxed packs. Six thousand jars would be sixty cartons of a hundred and several square metres of floor. Three months of wax at this output would be 1,110 kg, which at the largest listed packs is a hundred and eleven 10 kg bags. The wick is the only one of the four lines where a quarter's cover fits on a shelf rather than in a room, and that is a real operational advantage, not a marketing line.
| Line | Three months of cover | Units to receive at the largest listed pack | Cost | Practical verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco C1 wicks | 6,000 wicks | 6 × 1,000-wick pack | ₹35,400 | Fits on one shelf. Do it |
| Soy wax (CSI 464) | 1,110 kg | 111 × 10 kg bag | ₹5,63,214 | Nobody does this, and nobody should |
| Fragrance (Lavender) | 88.8 kg | 89 × 1 kg bottle | ₹4,63,624.80 | No. Hold 1.1–1.4 months per scent |
| Jars (200 ml Salsa clear) | 6,000 jars | 60 × 100-jar pack | ₹1,77,000 | No. Space and breakage both argue against |
Four storage habits that keep a deep wick holding usable, none of them a published specification and all of them cheap. Keep wicks dry and boxed — a wick that has absorbed moisture is not a wick you want in a customer's candle. Keep them away from fragrance oil, in a different cupboard if you can; a cotton wick sitting next to an open bottle is a wick that has picked up a scent you did not plan. Label every box with the size, because C1 and C2 look similar enough in a hurry and the page gives you no printed diameter to fall back on. And use the oldest pack first, so the depth you bought stays fresh stock rather than becoming a layer at the back of the shelf.
Finally, count on a cadence. A quarterly holding needs a monthly count, because 2,000 a month means a missed month is half your buffer. One line per size, one number, one date — and if the number does not match what you expected, find out why before you reorder, because the gap is usually a counting error that will repeat.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies candle-making raw materials, not finished candles. This page does recommend buying more wicks than you need this month, which is self-serving on its face — so here is the test of whether the reasoning is honest. It also tells you to cap the depth at three months rather than six or twelve, to hold specialty sizes for one month only, and to stop reordering any size whose jar you have retired. A supplier chasing a single large order would say none of those things.
Every price and pack size here comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing always takes precedence. Specifications are quoted only where a page states them: the Cotton Braided Wicks page states a wick height of 10.16 cm and that they are engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm; the Performance Wooden Wicks page states that one pack contains 10 wicks and wick tabs and that the product is imported; the Eco Candle Wicks page states that they pair with soy wax, beeswax and other eco-friendly waxes, and states no wick diameter, no length and no jar-diameter guidance — the C1 and C2 names exist only in the variant titles. We say so rather than filling the gap, because a wick-to-jar match you cannot verify is a burn test waiting to happen. No shelf life is stated for any wick on this page because no wick page states one.
