A three-wick 500 g candle needs 2.5 times the wax and oil per test candle, three wicks instead of one, an extra spacing variable and a much longer full-life burn. Priced side by side with a 200 g kit of the same design.
₹8,558.08
extra CSI materials to develop a three-wick 500 g candle vs a 200 g, same design, before jars · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much more does it cost to test? ₹8,558.08 more in CSI materials: ₹13,139.20 for the three-wick kit against ₹4,581.12 for a 200 g kit of the same design, both before jars.

Why so much more? 460 g wax and 40 g oil per test candle at 8% (vs 184 g and 16 g), three wicks per candle, and twice the stage-A candles to test two wick spacings — 24 candles vs 16.

Does CSI sell three-wick jars? No three-wick or double-wick jar is listed. Use your own; the wick and wax maths on this page is valid for any three-wick jar. Ask on WhatsApp whether CSI can supply one.

What else should I budget? A stage-B wick top-up after stage A, your jars, and time: the full-life burn of 500 g takes many more cycles — measure g per hour on your first burns to estimate it.
The short answer
Answer: Budget ₹13,139.20 in CSI materials for a three-wick 500 g development kit (24 candles, 72 wicks), against ₹4,581.12 for a 200 g kit of the same design — ₹8,558.08 more — plus your own three-wick jars and a stage-B wick top-up.
Why: Each test candle carries 2.5× the wax and oil and 3× the wicks; wick spacing is an extra variable; and a full-life burn of 500 g takes far longer. CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter or burn-time data.
Method: Same design as the 200 g kit + two spacings in stage A → 10% step → full-life → production with three wicks per candle. The hub method.

And more burn time: the full-life candle holds 2.5 times the wax, so plan more cycles before the production order.
The same test design for a standard 200 g candle and a three-wick 500 g candle, priced with real CSI packs. The 500 g kit has twice the stage-A candles (two wick spacings), three wicks per candle and 2.5 times the wax and oil per candle: ₹13,139.20 against ₹4,581.12, before jars. The longer full-life burn is the cost the table cannot show.
Straight answer
I want to make a three-wick 500 g luxury candle — how much additional wick and wax testing should I budget for compared with a standard 200 g candle?
About ₹8,558.08 more in CSI materials for the same test design — ₹13,139.20 against ₹4,581.12 — plus your own three-wick jars, a wick top-up after stage A, and considerably more burn time. Each 500 g test candle at 8% carries 460 g of wax and 40 g of oil (vs 184 g and 16 g) and three wicks instead of one. Wick spacing is an extra variable, so stage A doubles to 16 candles: two waxes (Chunks, CSI 464) × two wicks (Eco Thin C1, Eco Thick C2) × two spacings. In all, 24 candles and 72 wicks against 16 candles and 16 wicks. CSI lists no three-wick jar — use your own; the wick maths holds. And plan the calendar: a full-life burn of 500 g takes many more cycles, which only your own weighed burns can estimate.
One line: same method, bigger candle, one more variable, longer clock.
Developing a three-wick 500 g candle with the same design as a standard 200 g costs ₹13,139.20 in CSI materials before jars, against ₹4,581.12 for the 200 g — ₹8,558.08 more. CSI lists no three-wick jar, so the jar is yours. The oil in this example is Saffron Cedarwood, cheaper per gram at 500 g (₹5.17) than at 1 kg (₹6.87).

Why a three-wick candle costs more to develop

A 500 g candle is not two and a half 200 g candles. It is a different burn, with three flames sharing one pool.

Three things raise the development budget, and only one of them is obvious. The obvious one is material per test candle: 2.5 times the wax and oil, and three wicks instead of one. The second is an extra variable. With one wick, the wick sits in the centre. With three, their spacing — how far from each other and from the glass — changes how the three pools meet, and in general candle-making practice it is commonly tested alongside wick type. The third is time: a full-life burn of 500 g takes many more cycles than a full-life burn of 200 g, and nothing can be released until it is done.

This page prices the first two with real CSI packs and makes the third visible so you can plan for it. It does not invent a wick size for your jar or a burn time: CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter chart and no burn data. CSI also does not list a three-wick jar or a double-wick jar — the wick and wax maths below are valid for any three-wick container you buy elsewhere, and the jar line is a labelled example for you to replace.

CSI convention: load is a share of the finished weight · per candle

Pool to melt (illustrative diameters) 8.0 cm → 50.27 cm² 11.0 cm → 95.03 cm² 1.89×

The last row is geometry, not a claim about any CSI jar: if your own three-wick jar's internal diameter were 11.0 cm against a single-wick jar's 8.0 cm (both illustrative — measure yours), the surface to melt is π × d² ÷ 4, 95.03 cm² against 50.27 cm², or 1.89 times as much, for three flames instead of one. Whether three of a given wick melt that surface evenly is exactly what the test is for.

The CSI principle
Same method, bigger candle, one more variable, longer clock.
Keep the design identical to the 200 g kit so the comparison is fair; add only wick spacing; and budget the burn time as seriously as the materials.

The two kits, side by side

Both kits use the same structure: two waxes — Chunks (page: up to 13%) and CSI 464 (page: up to 10%) — and two wick types, Eco Thin C1 and Eco Thick C2, at 8%, then a 10% step with the winning wick and a shelf candle per wax. The 500 g kit doubles the stage-A cells to test two wick spacings. All wicks are counted per candle: one in the 200 g, three in the 500 g.

Two pack details change between the kits. The oil: the 200 g kit needs 294.0 g of Saffron Cedarwood and is cheapest in small bottles (2 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 3 × 15 g); the 500 g kit needs 1,071.0 g, and there Saffron Cedarwood's pricing is unusual — ₹7.08 a gram at 50 g, ₹6.96 at 100 g, ₹5.17 at 500 g and ₹6.87 at 1 kg — so two 500 g bottles plus small top-ups (2 × 500 g + 5 × 15 g, ₹5,687.60) beat a 1 kg bottle. The wicks: the 500 g kit's stage A uses 24 of each type, so it buys 2 × 20-pack of Thin C1 and 1 × 20-pack + 1 × 10-pack of Thick C2, with six spares each because a three-wick pour has three chances to set a wick off-centre.

Stage B's three-wick candles need 24 more wicks (4 candles × 3 wicks × 2 waxes), and the leftovers after stage A are 16 Thin C1 and 6 Thick C2. So after stage A you top up the winner: 1 × 20-pack of Thin C1 (₹118.00) or 1 × 20-pack of Thick C2 (₹188.80). In the 200 g kit the leftovers already cover stage B. That top-up is part of the extra budget, and it is bought only after stage A, never in advance.

The shortcut: "I'll test in a 200 g jar and scale up." A wick that passes in a single-wick 200 g candle tells you very little about three of them sharing a pool in a wider jar: the flames heat each other and the glass, and in general practice multi-wick candles are commonly found to run hotter than the single-wick version suggests. Fix: test in the real three-wick jar, with the real spacing, and take one candle to the end. The extra ₹8,558.08 is the price of not finding that out on a customer's table.

The extra variable: wick spacing

With three wicks the pools have to meet. Too close together and the centre runs hot while the edges tunnel; too close to the glass and the jar heats. Test two layouts per wick type, both drawn on paper first and marked with a template so every candle in a cell is identical: a tighter triangle and a wider triangle, at distances you measure and record for your jar. CSI publishes no spacing rule; your template is the specification.

1
Make a spacing templateCut a card disc to the jar's internal diameter and mark three wick points for each layout. Write the distances on it. Every candle in a cell uses the same card.
2
Fix all three wicks before pouringOne wick sticker per wick — three per candle — pressed down with a tool. Hold the tops with whatever you use for single wicks; check that each wick is upright before the wax sets. CSI's Wick Centering Device (5 for ₹118.00) is made for single wicks; do not assume it fits a three-wick layout.
3
Pour stage ASixteen 500 g candles: two waxes × two wick types × two spacings, two candles each, at 8% (40 g oil, 460 g wax). Follow each wax's page: Chunks' page states oil addition at 80–90°C and pour at 75–80°C; CSI 464's page gives an 80–90°C melt/pour working range.
4
Burn for the joined pool3–4 hour cycles with full cool-down (a commonly used working practice). Record when the three pools join, whether the edge reaches the glass, pool depth at the centre and the edge, each flame's height, soot, and the jar-side reading at three points.
5
Knock out on heat firstAny wick–spacing combination with taller flames, more soot or a hotter jar than the others is out, whatever its throw. Multi-wick candles are where a hot jar is most likely; never trade it for throw.
6
Stage B and the full-life candlePour the 10% step with the surviving wick and spacing, top up the winning wick then, and burn one candle per wax to the end. Weigh it before and after each cycle: consumption in g per hour from your own first cycles tells you how many cycles the full life will take.

The acceptance line is the series' standard one: "no worse than the other candidates on every safety line, within your jar supplier's guidance and the recognised candle fire-safety standard you work to" (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US standard; read it for its own requirements). For a multi-wick candle, also confirm with the jar supplier that the glass is meant for multi-wick use.

The third cost: time

The materials budget is easy to see. The calendar budget is the one that catches people before Diwali.

CSI publishes no burn-time data, and this page will not invent a figure. What can be said is arithmetic: the 500 g full-life candle holds 2.5 times the wax of the 200 g, burned by three wicks instead of one, so its life depends on how fast three flames consume it — which only your weighed first cycles can tell you. Measure g per hour across the first two cycles, divide the remaining wax by it, and you have your own estimate of how many more cycles the full-life test needs. Add the cure checkpoints (labelled examples: 48 hours, 7 and 14 days) before the first burn. That number, not the materials, is often what decides whether a three-wick candle can launch for a given festival.

Start the full-life candle first
Pour the stage-A candles for both waxes in one session and put one candle of each wax's most likely wick and spacing straight onto a full-life schedule once it is cured, instead of waiting for stage B. If it fails, you have lost one candle; if it passes, you have saved the longest single wait in the plan.

What the extra testing protects: the production order

The test budget is best judged against the order it protects. Below, a labelled example run of 40 three-wick 500 g candles in Chunks with Eco Thick C2 (example winners), with the allowance stack in the series order: 2 QC candles, ÷ (1 − 3%) rejects, + 4% pour loss on wax and oil, then real CSI packs. The jars are yours, so breakage is your line to set. The wick count is three per candle — the maths holds for any three-wick jar.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A three-wick 500 g candle sells two and a half times the wax and oil of a 200 g and three times the wicks — it is a good product for a supplier. We still say: if your 200 g candle already sells and you are adding a luxury size for the festive season, check the calendar before the ₹8,558.08. If the full-life test cannot finish before your launch date, a well-tested 200 g in a premium jar is a safer luxury product than an untested 500 g. And do not buy Saffron Cedarwood in 1 kg for this — two 500 g bottles are ₹1,699.20 cheaper.

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. A three-wick 500 g candle is a classic festive luxury piece — and the one with the longest test clock. If you are aiming for Diwali, pour stage A this week and start a full-life candle as soon as it cures. Send us your jar's internal diameter and run size on WhatsApp and we will price the kit and the production order; ask too whether CSI can supply a three-wick jar (none is listed). Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.

The single-wick version of the method is the lavender hub. If the 500 g sits alongside 50 g and 200 g sizes, the three-size procurement plan combines them; the 60 × 300 g luxury candles post runs the quantities for a large single-wick candle; and the oud large-room post asks whether a bigger format is the honest answer to a large room.

A bigger candle needs a bigger test — in wax, in wicks, and above all in time.

Only need double-wick? The same design works with two wicks per candle — the wick line becomes 2 × candles, and spacing still matters. CSI lists no double-wick jar either; the double-wick post covers spare-wick maths. Ask on WhatsApp.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A three-wick candle sells more of everything we stock. This page still tells you to check the calendar before committing, that a well-tested 200 g may be the safer festive luxury product, and to buy two 500 g bottles of the example oil rather than the dearer 1 kg.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Wick prices are re-checked 4 October 2026. Splits, pool areas, pack rounding, kit and production totals and per-candle costs are arithmetic shown to two decimals.

The 8% and 10% loads, the illustrative 8.0 cm and 11.0 cm diameters, kit design, two spacing layouts, spare wicks, burn cycles, cure checkpoints, allowances, the 40-candle run and the jar and lid figures are labelled assumptions or examples. Frequently asked questions

How many wicks for a 500 g candle?
That depends on the jar's internal diameter and the wick, and CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter chart. Many large-diameter candles use several wicks; this page tests a three-wick layout in two spacings — test yours in the real jar.
How much wax for a 500 g three-wick candle?
At 8% load, 460 g of wax and 40 g of oil (load is a share of the finished weight). At 10%, 450 g and 50 g.
Does CSI sell three-wick candle jars?
No three-wick or double-wick jar is listed on the pull. Use your own jar; ask on WhatsApp whether CSI can supply one. The wick and wax maths is the same for any three-wick container.
Why do multi-wick candles get hot?
Several flames heat each other and the glass, and in general practice multi-wick candles are commonly found to run hotter than a single-wick candle suggests. Measure the jar at three points every cycle and knock out any layout that runs hotter than the others.
How long does a burn test for a big candle take?
CSI publishes no burn-time data. Weigh the candle before and after your first cycles, work out grams per hour, and divide the remaining wax by it to estimate how many more cycles the full-life test needs.
Is a 1 kg fragrance bottle always cheaper per gram?
No. Saffron Cedarwood is ₹5.17 a gram at 500 g and ₹6.87 at 1 kg, so two 500 g bottles cost ₹1,699.20 less than one 1 kg. Always compute.
Bigger candle, bigger test
Budget the wax, the wicks, the spacing — and the calendar.
Saffron Cedarwood from ₹103.84, Chunks from ₹299.00, CSI 464 from ₹260.00, Eco Thick C2 ₹94.40 for 10, Eco Thin C1 ₹118.00 for 20, stickers ₹100.00 for 40. Tell us your jar and run size and we will price the kit and the order.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle weight (500 g at 8% = 40 g oil + 460 g wax; 200 g = 16 g + 184 g). What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range in the spec table, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. No three-wick or double-wick jar is listed; the jar and lid figures are examples. Pool areas are geometry on illustrative diameters. CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter, spacing, burn-time or throw data and no numeric safety limits; ASTM F2417 is named only as a commonly cited standard. Kit design, spacing layouts, spare wicks, burn cycles, cure checkpoints, allowances and the 40-candle run are labelled working assumptions. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
