Keeping the same wax and fragrance does not keep the same candle. A new jar changes the melt pool, the fill line, the heat low in the glass, the lid gap and the parcel. Here is what to retest, what to leave alone, and whether the saving survives.
₹41.30
saved per jar moving from White Matte to Salsa clear at 50, before retest and fill changes (worked example) · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
If the wax and fragrance stay the same, what do I retest after changing jars? Everything the jar controls: fill weight and the net-weight label, headspace and lid clearance, the wick bracket, a full burn-down including the final third, pour and cooling behaviour, appearance (wet spots, frosting), lid fit, labels, boxes and a shipping check.

What can I skip? Usually the fragrance load, the wax choice and your cure time: the formula hasn't changed. Keep the load where it works and bracket the wick; changing both at once doubles the testing.

Is the saving worth the retest? Often, yes, if you count it honestly. In our worked example, moving from White Matte 200 ml jars (₹70.80) to 200ml Salsa clear jars (₹29.50 at 50) saves ₹41.30 a jar, ₹16,520.00 a month at 400 candles; retesting a 5-fragrance range costs about ₹6,412.65 in materials. But if the new jar holds 20 g more candle, 38% of the jar saving goes on wax and oil.

What should I buy first? One 50-pack of the new jar for retesting, a C1/C2/Cotton Braided bracket, and nothing in bulk until the burn-downs pass.
The short answer
The rule: the formula belongs to the wax and oil; the candle belongs to the jar. A new jar makes it a new candle until tests say otherwise.
Must retest: fill weight and label, headspace, wick bracket, full burn-down with final third, appearance, lid, labels, packaging and courier weight.
Usually skip: fragrance load, wax choice, cure time. Check hot throw at the end of the burn-downs rather than running a separate load trial.
The money: ₹41.30 saved per jar (58.3%) in the worked example; retest for 5 fragrances about ₹6,412.65 (materials only); a 20 g change in fill moves ₹15.61 a candle in wax and oil.
Same wax, same oil, new jar: what to retest Read across: if your new jar differs in this way, repeat the tests marked. Our judgement, not a standard. Fill weight & net label Headspace & lid gap Wick bracket Burn-down, final third Pour temp & cooling Wet spots & finish Lid fit & seal Label, box & courier Internal diameter Depth, neck, taper Wall and base Glass colour, finish Lid type Outer size, shape Empty-jar weight Must-retest triggers 2 2 1 3 1 1 1 2 must retest check, retest if it differs not affected by this change White Matte to Salsa clear: finish and lid differ on the listings, and the Salsa page states no dimensions, so every row is unknown until you measure. Load, wax and cure time stay as they are.
The retest matrix. Each row is a way a cheaper jar can differ from your current one; each column is a test. A filled circle means repeat that test if the row applies, a half circle means check and retest if it differs. Every test is triggered by at least one kind of change, and a cheaper jar usually differs in several. Our judgement from how candles commonly behave, not an industry standard.
Straight answer
I'm changing my candle jar to reduce costs. Which parts of my existing formula need to be retested even if the wax and fragrance remain unchanged?
The wax-and-oil formula itself can usually stay; the parts that depend on the jar cannot. Retest the fill weight (water-fill to your line and test-pour, then reset the net weight on the label), the headspace and lid clearance, the wick (a fresh bracket, because melt-pool area follows internal diameter), a full burn-down of each fragrance through the final third (heat builds low in the jar, and walls, base and shape change that), pour and cooling behaviour in the new glass, the finished appearance (a clear jar shows wet spots a matte one hid), lid fit, labels, boxes and the packed courier weight. You can usually keep the fragrance load, the wax and your cure time as they are. Then check the saving survives: if the new jar holds a different weight of candle, your wax and oil cost per candle moves with it. Buy one pack of the new jar for the retest, not a production order.
One line: keep the formula, retest everything the jar touches, and bank the saving only after the burn-downs pass.
Retest before you reorder. One 50 Pcs pack of the 200ml Salsa clear jar (₹1,475.00, ₹29.50 a jar) covers a 5-fragrance retest at 8 candles each, plus 3 jars to water-fill and 7 spare for a lid and shipping check. It is also the pack size where the per-jar price drops.

Why "same wax, same oil" is not "same candle"

Your formula was never just wax and oil. The jar was the third ingredient.

A candle's performance comes from the wax and oil burning in a particular space: a melt pool of a certain area, a flame at a certain distance from the glass, heat building in a certain shape as the candle burns down, a lid at a certain height above the wax. Change the jar and you change that space, even if every gram of wax and oil is identical. That is why "we only changed the jar" is behind so many unexpected complaints: tunnelling in a wider jar, soot in a narrower one, a hot jar in the final third, a lid that now touches the wick.

The good news is that the formula itself rarely needs to change. The fragrance load you settled on, the wax you chose and how long you cure are properties of the wax and oil. What you retest is the jar's contribution. The scope of a wick-only change between two diameters is covered in our guide to moving a finalised wick from a 7 cm to an 8 cm jar; this page is the full checklist when the whole container changes to save money.

Mistake: switching to a cheaper jar that "looks the same size", pouring the old fill weight with the old wick, and shipping. What actually happens: the fill line sits in a different place (too close to the rim or looking half-empty), the melt pool is a different size, and the first complaint arrives weeks later from a customer's third or fourth burn. Fix: treat the jar change as a new product launch in miniature: measure, test-pour, bracket, burn down, then relabel.

The retest matrix, row by row

Find which rows your new jar differs in. The columns tell you what to repeat.
Retest matrix · what each difference forces · our judgement from common candle behaviour
Why each change triggers the tests it does
If the new jar differs in… Repeat Why
Internal diameter Fill weight, wick bracket, full burn-down Melt-pool area is π × r² of the internal radius: 7.0 cm inside is about 38.48 cm², 7.5 cm about 44.18 cm², roughly 14.8% more. The wick that fitted one may tunnel or overheat in the other.
Depth, neck or taper Fill weight, headspace, full burn-down; check wick, lid, label A shoulder or neck changes usable volume and where the fill line sits; a taper changes the pool late in the burn.
Wall and base thickness Full burn-down, pour and cooling; check fill, wick, finish Thickness changes how heat moves through the glass near the end of the burn and how the jar takes hot wax on pouring. Heavier is not automatically safer.
Glass colour or finish Appearance; check burn-down (coatings), pour, label contrast Clear glass shows wet spots and frosting that matte or coloured glass hides; coatings can react to heat differently.
Lid type Headspace and lid gap, lid fit; check label and packing A lug cap, a dome or no lid each set a different minimum gap above the wax.
Outer size and shape Labels, box size, courier weight A new outline needs new label dimensions and may need a new box.
Empty-jar weight Courier weight Heavier or lighter glass can move the packed parcel across a courier slab line.

The diameter row is the one most makers underestimate. The worked area figures above are the series' standard example: a 5 mm change in internal diameter changes the melt-pool area by roughly 15%. The mechanics are in our guide to what a 5 mm difference does.

Measure before you choose the tests
CSI listings give an outer diameter or a "width" at most, never an internal one, and the 200ml Salsa listings give no height or diameter at all. Water-fill a jar to your fill line on a tared scale, measure the inside at pool height with callipers or a ruler, and compare both jars side by side. The measurement list is in our guide to near-identical replacement jars.

Worked example: White Matte to Salsa clear

Both listings say 200 ml. Almost everything else is different.

Take a maker selling about 400 candles a month in the White Matte Glass Jar, attracted by the 200ml Salsa clear jar at ₹29.50 a jar from 50 pieces. Here is what the two listings say, side by side:

Two CSI "200 ml" jars · wording quoted from product pages, verified 26 September 2026
What the listings tell you differs before you measure anything
Property White Matte Glass Jar (current) 200ml Salsa clear jar (cheaper) Retest it triggers
Capacity wording "a fill weight of 200 ml" "The 200ml capacity" Fill weight and net label (neither says brim or fill line)
Dimensions "Height 8 cm width 7 cm" none stated (63 mm lug cap in the title) Measure everything; wick bracket
Shape not described "wide mouth opening"; shape not otherwise described (a lug-cap jar has a threaded neck) Headspace, fill line, late-burn behaviour
Finish white matte clear Appearance: wet spots and frosting now visible
Lid none mentioned golden 63 mm lug cap included Lid gap, lid fit, packing
Heat wording "withstand high heat" (no figure) "withstands the heat of hot wax without cracking or warping" (no figure) Pour, cooling and full burn-down: neither states a temperature
Price per jar ₹70.80 at 5 or 10 ₹40.12 at 5; ₹29.50 at 50 or 100 The saving: ₹41.30 a jar at 50

The saving is real: ₹41.30 a jar, 58.3% of the White Matte price, ₹16,520.00 a month at 400 candles and ₹198,240.00 over a year. The Salsa clear jar also comes with a lid, which the matte jar's listing doesn't mention. If you are coming from the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) instead (₹94.40), the gap is wider, ₹64.90 a jar, but so is the change: a stated 150 g apothecary-style jar with an 85°C hot-pour statement to a 200 ml jar with no figure.

Notice what the saving does not tell you: whether the Salsa jar holds the same candle, needs the same wick, or looks as good with your wax. Every row in the matrix differs or is unknown. That is the retest.

Argued against our own interest: if your current candles are selling on the look of a coloured matte jar, a cheaper clear jar may cost you more in price and repeat orders than it saves in glass. The ₹41.30 a jar is only a saving if the customer still buys at the same price. Test one fragrance in the new jar with real customers before you move the range.

Hidden cost changes the retest will reveal

The jar price is the saving you can see. The fill weight is the cost you can't, until you weigh it.

A different fill weight changes your per-candle cost

Suppose the water-fill shows the Salsa jar, filled to a sensible line below the shoulder, holds 20 g more finished candle than your matte jar (a placeholder; your scale decides, and it could as easily be less). At 8%, 20 g more candle is 18.4 g more wax (₹9.34 of CSI 464 at the 10 kg price) and 1.6 g more oil (₹6.28 of Jasmine at the 1 kg price): ₹15.61 a candle. That leaves ₹25.69 of the ₹41.30 jar saving, so about 38% of the saving goes on filling the bigger space. And your label, price per gram and customer promise all change with it. If the new jar holds less, the opposite happens: wax and oil costs fall, but the candle looks smaller and the label must drop. The net-weight process is in our guide to setting a label net weight; Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules govern net-quantity declarations, so check the current requirements for your product and channel (this is not legal advice).

A different wick changes your wick cost, slightly

If the bracket moves you from Eco C1 (₹5.90) to Eco C2 (₹9.44) or Cotton Braided (₹12.00), the per-candle difference is small but it is a change to your costing sheet and your wick stock. What matters more is that you can't know which rung wins until the burn-downs finish.

A clear jar changes your reject rate

Wet spots, patches where wax pulls away from the glass, are common with soy and cosmetic rather than a safety defect, but in clear glass they are visible. The CSI 464 page claims "excellent glass adhesion" (the page's wording); pre-warming clean jars and slow, even cooling are common mitigations, tendencies rather than certainties. If your standard is "no visible wet spots", a switch from matte to clear can raise rejects or rework, which eats into the saving. Managing wet spots in clear glass is covered in our clear-glass wet-spots guide.

Packaging and courier

A new outline may need a new box, and a heavier or lighter jar can move a packed parcel across a courier slab. Weigh a packed parcel before you print new boxes; the slab trade-off is in our guide to lighter vs heavier jars for shipping.

What you can safely leave alone

Retest the jar's contribution, not the whole formula.
What stays and what goes · wax and fragrance unchanged
Keep, check or retest
Formula element Decision Reason
Fragrance load (e.g. 8%) Keep A property of wax and oil; stay inside the lower of the two ceilings (CSI 464 states up to 10%). Changing load and wick together doubles the testing.
Wax choice Keep Unchanged by the jar. The CSI 464 pour range of 80–90°C still applies; the new jar’s heat wording states no figure, so watch it on the first pours.
Cure time Keep Set by wax and oil, not the jar. Test on the same cure schedule so results are comparable.
Hot throw Check A different pool size can change how the room fills. Note throw during the burn-downs rather than running a separate trial.
Dye or colour Check A clear jar shows the wax colour; a matte one hid it.
Wick Retest Follows internal diameter; bracket afresh.
Fill weight and label Retest Follows usable volume.

The logic of testing one variable at a time, and in which order, applies to raw materials generally; it is set out in our guide to the order in which to test raw materials. For the jar, the order is below.

The retest in order: seven steps

1
Measure both jars side by sideWater-fill to your fill line on a tared scale (three jars each), internal diameter at pool height, height, rim, empty weight. Write both on one sheet.
2
Set the new fill line and fill weightChoose the line from the lid clearance you need; test-pour three jars with your unchanged formula at your unchanged load; weigh the cooled candles.
3
Pour watchPour at your usual temperature within the wax page’s range (CSI 464: 80–90°C) and watch the first pours cool. Look for cracks, pull-away and frosting; neither 200 ml listing states a heat figure.
4
Bracket the wick per fragranceThree rungs, for example C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, two candles each. Judge first burns by melt pool, flame height and soot.
5
Burn the winner down, twiceFull burn-downs on the winning wick through the final third. Watch glass warmth and flame distance from the wall low in the jar; stop each burn with about 1 cm of wax left, a common practice.
6
Lid, label, box, parcelCheck the lid clears the wick and seals, the label fits the new outline, the box fits the jar with cushioning, and the packed parcel weight against your courier’s slab.
7
Sign off and reorderRecord the new spec sheet, wick map and net weight. Only now place the production order.
Sign-off criteria · what "pass" means for each retest · our judgement
Before the new jar goes into production
Test Pass looks like Fail looks like
Fill weight Three test pours within a few grams of each other at your chosen line Wide spread between jars: check glass variation before you set a label
Net-weight label Declared figure set from weighed candles, below the lightest Label copied from the old jar
Headspace and lid Lid closes without touching the wick; a clear gap above the wax Lid presses the wick or sits on the wax
Wick bracket One rung gives a full melt pool on early burns without a tall, sooting flame Every rung tunnels or every rung smokes: measure the jar again
Burn-down, final third Two candles per fragrance burn to the stop line with a steady flame and no flame near the glass Flame drifts to the wall, glass too hot to hold near the end, or any crack
Pour and cooling No cracks, clean release of the pour, acceptable surface Any crack on cooling: stop and investigate before pouring more
Appearance Wet spots and frosting within the standard you set for the clear jar A standard you can only meet by reworking most candles
Label, box, parcel Label fits, box holds the jar with cushioning, parcel inside its courier slab Parcel crosses a slab line you had not planned for

If the retest fails

You have three honest options. First, fix the one thing that failed and retest only that: a lid that touches the wick may need a lower fill line, not a new jar. Second, try the next cheaper jar on your shortlist with the same sequence; the measurements you took for the first candidate make the comparison quick. Third, stay with your current jar and look for the saving elsewhere: a quote on WhatsApp for the quantity you really buy (most CSI jar listings, White Matte included, are priced flat per jar across their pack sizes, so the listed packs alone won't lower the price), or a larger wax pack where the per-gram price actually falls. A failed retest is not wasted money; it is the cheapest possible way to find out the saving was not real.

Why the final third deserves its own attention before a commercial launch is covered in our final-third guide. Keep a few of your old jars aside as a control: burning one old and one new candle of the same fragrance side by side is the fastest way to see what the jar changed.

What the retest costs, and how fast the saving repays it

Worked example · retest materials in the Salsa clear jar · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Retest budget for a 5-fragrance range, 8 candles per fragrance
Line Quantity Cost
One test candle (Salsa jar, 138 g CSI 464, 12 g Jasmine at 100 g price, C2) 1 ₹160.56
Per fragrance: 6 bracket + 2 confirmation candles 8 candles ₹1,282.53
5-fragrance range 40 candles ₹6,412.65
Monthly jar saving at 400 candles ₹16,520.00

At ₹16,520.00 a month of jar saving, ₹6,412.65 of retest materials is repaid in under two weeks of production. Material costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST; add your time for supervising 40 candles through full burn-downs. The honest risk runs the other way: one batch of complaints or returns from an untested switch can cancel months of saving. On the first 500 candles the jar saving is ₹20,650.00; a batch recall of even a fraction of that production would eat much of it.

When to switch: not before Diwali

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 43 days after this guide's pull date. A 5-fragrance retest with full burn-downs, relabelling and new boxes is hard to finish and validate in that window, and a festive customer is the worst person to discover an untested jar. Our suggestion: run the retest now on one or two fragrances in parallel with festive production in your current jar, finish the rest in November, and switch production after the season, well ahead of Valentine's Day on 14 February 2027.

Plan the switch for after the festive rush. Order the 50 Pcs retest pack now and ask for a post-Diwali quote on production quantities with a GST invoice and a dispatch date from Pune. Message CSI on WhatsApp.

The CSI principle
A cheaper jar saves money on the invoice. Only a retested jar saves money in the customer's home.
Keep the wax, oil and load; retest fill, wick, burn-down, look, lid, label and parcel; then bank the saving.

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells both jars in the worked example, the wicks and the tools, and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you the cheaper jar has no stated dimensions, that a clear jar may raise your rejects, that a bigger fill can eat the saving, and that you may be better off staying with the jar you have. We would rather you switch once, correctly, than twice.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in a pick table was in stock on that date, and out-of-stock colours are named. Capacity, dimension and heat wording is quoted from the product pages.

The retest matrix, the 8-candle bracket per fragrance, the 400-candles-a-month volume and the 20 g fill-change placeholder are our judgement and worked-example assumptions, not data. CSI publishes no thermal-shock, burn-down or breakage data for its jars. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message WhatsApp +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to retest my candle if I only change the jar?
Yes. The wax and fragrance formula can usually stay, but fill weight, net-weight label, headspace, wick, a full burn-down through the final third, appearance, lid fit, labels and packaging all depend on the jar and need checking.
Can I keep the same wick in a cheaper jar of the same capacity?
Not without testing. Wick size follows the internal diameter at the melt pool, not the capacity; two "200 ml" jars can differ in diameter and shape. Run a fresh bracket, for example C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, and full burn-downs.
Do I need to change the fragrance load when I change jars?
Usually not. Load is a property of the wax and oil; keep it inside the lower of the wax and oil pages’ ceilings (CSI 464 states up to 10%) and retest the wick instead. Changing both at once doubles the testing.
How much can I save switching from White Matte to Salsa jars?
At CSI live pricing, ₹41.30 a jar (₹70.80 vs ₹29.50 at 50 Pcs), ₹16,520.00 a month at 400 candles. If the new jar holds 20 g more candle, ₹15.61 a candle goes on extra wax and oil, leaving ₹25.69.
How much does it cost to retest a candle range in a new jar?
In our worked example, 8 test candles per fragrance in the Salsa clear jar cost ₹1,282.53 in materials; a 5-fragrance range is ₹6,412.65, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST.
Why do wet spots appear after switching to a clear jar?
Often they were there before and the matte or coloured glass hid them. Wet spots are common with soy and cosmetic; clean, pre-warmed jars and slow, even cooling are common mitigations. Decide whether your quality standard accepts them before you switch.
Cheaper jar, same candle
One 50-pack, a wick bracket and two weeks of burns.
Order 50 Salsa clear jars and a C1/C2/Cotton Braided bracket, measure both jars side by side, retest each fragrance through the final third, and only then move production. If the saving survives the fill weight and the burn-downs, you'll know exactly how much it is.
