My Oud Fragrance Needs a Larger Wick Than My Citrus Fragrance at the Same 8% Load — What Properties of the Fragrance Can Change Wick Requirements?
शेयर करना
Why does citrus manage with less? Citrus top notes are highly volatile. They evaporate readily from a modest pool, so a smaller wick is often enough to carry them into the room.
Is this a sign the oud is poor? No. It reflects the family's structure. A heavy woody oil that needs its own wick is behaving normally, not failing.
Should I raise oud load instead? Usually not first. In a 250 g candle, going from 8% to 10% Woody Oud adds ₹22.66 of oil, while a wick step on Eco Wicks adds ₹3.54.
Two oils at 8% are not two equal fuels
Your citrus candle burns nicely with a modest wick. Your oud candle, in the same jar and wax at the same 8%, tunnels, smells muted, or only opens up when you move to a bigger wick. It feels inconsistent, as if one of the oils is misbehaving. In fact both are behaving exactly as their families tend to.
In a 250 g candle, 8% of total weight is 20 g of oil and 230 g of wax. That weight is identical for both oils. What differs is what the 20 g is made of, and three properties matter most for the wick: how volatile the oil is, how thick and heavy it is, and where its strength sits in the pyramid of top, heart and base notes.
Three fragrance properties that change wick needs
1. Volatility
Volatility is how readily a material evaporates. CSI Citrus Lemon is built from lemon and lime at the top, grapefruit and orange in the middle, and mandarin at the base. Its own page notes that citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families. The upside for burning is that these light notes lift off a warm melt pool easily, so a smaller flame can still project a citrus scent.
CSI Woody Oud opens with citrus and spice but its weight sits lower down: oud and patchouli in the heart, woods, amber and musk at the base. Base notes are, by definition, the least volatile part of a fragrance. They need a warmer, broader pool to release. A small wick that suits lemon may never heat the pool enough to wake them up.
2. Viscosity and weight
As a general principle, heavier, more resinous oils are thicker and move through a wick's capillary channels differently from thin, light oils. If fuel arrives unevenly or slowly, a small wick can struggle, giving a lower flame and a slow pool. A larger wick has more capillary capacity and more heat to keep that thicker fuel moving.
3. Where the strength sits
A citrus oil is top-heavy: much of its character is up front. An oud oil is bottom-heavy. When you burn a bottom-heavy oil on a wick sized for a top-heavy one, the pool may release the opening citrus and spice but hold back the oud itself. The candle then smells thin and you conclude the oil is weak. Often it is simply under-heated.
| Property | CSI Citrus Lemon | CSI Woody Oud | Likely wick effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main notes | Lemon, lime / grapefruit, orange / mandarin | Citrus, spice / oud, patchouli / woods, amber, musk | Oud's strength sits in heavy heart and base notes |
| Volatility | High; page says top notes fade faster | Lower; weight in base notes | Oud usually needs a fuller, warmer pool |
| Vanillin | ~0% stated | Not published | Neither is a vanilla-type fuel concern here |
| Stated loads | Soy 6–10%, paraffin 6–8% | Soy 6–10%, paraffin 6–8% | Same ranges, different wick needs |
| Cure on page | Full 48–72 h, use upper end of range | Soy cure 48–72 h | Judge both only after the stated cure |
Confirm the oud really needs the bigger wick
Before you lock in a larger wick, make sure you are not compensating for something else. Two common false signals look like under-wicking.
Once those are ruled out, run a simple ladder.
If the larger wick gives a full pool, a steady flame and a clear woody heart without soot or heavy mushrooming, you have your oud wick. If it soots or the flame looks too big for the jar, step back and look at the load or the jar diameter instead.
Why a wick step beats a load step on cost
When oud smells weak, the reflex is to add more oil. That is the expensive route, and if the real problem is pool heat it may not work at all, because extra heavy oil in a cool pool stays locked in the wax.
| Option | Working | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon 8% (20 g) | 20 × ₹2.832 | ₹56.64 |
| Woody Oud 8% (20 g) | 20 × ₹4.5312 | ₹90.62 |
| Woody Oud 10% (25 g) | 25 × ₹4.5312 | ₹113.28 |
| Extra oil going 8% → 10% | 5 × ₹4.5312 | ₹22.66 |
| Eco Wick Thin C1 → Thick C2 | ₹9.44 − ₹5.90 | ₹3.54 |
Per-gram prices come from the 1 kg packs: Woody Oud at ₹4,531.20 per kg and Citrus Lemon at ₹2,832.00 per kg. On these figures, a wick step costs about a sixth of the extra oil. Over a batch of 100 candles, that is ₹354.00 for the wick change against ₹2,266.00 for the extra oud, if you multiply the per-candle difference of ₹22.66 by 100.
Set up a heavy-scent wick group
The lasting fix is organisational. Rather than one wick per jar, keep a small table per jar with a wick for light, volatile families such as citrus and fresh scents, and a separate one for heavy families such as oud, woods and amber. Every new oil goes into the group its structure suggests, then gets a short confirmation burn.
How do you decide which group a new oil joins? Read its published notes before you pour. If the product page puts woods, resins, amber, oud or musk in the heart and base, start it in the heavy group. If the page leads with citrus, herbs or aquatic notes and the base is light, start it in the fresh group. Mixed oils, such as a bergamot opening over an amber heart, deserve a short burn on both wicks, because you cannot predict from the name alone which half of the pyramid will control the burn. Record the result against the oil, so the next maker in your workshop does not repeat the exercise.
This way the citrus range keeps the wick that already works, the oud range gets the heat it needs, and nobody re-wicks a whole collection because one family behaved like itself. A reviewer described Woody Oud as "Good quality wood fragrance oil with a warm, long-lasting scent and strong performance in candles." Performance like that depends on giving a heavy oil the pool it needs, which is exactly what a separate wick group is for.
Keep safety in the routine as well. Add fragrance at the wax's stated temperature, confirm with a separate thermometer, and stop any test candle that smokes or flares. A larger wick is only correct if it burns steadily in your jar.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance and burn science from what CSI's own product pages state (loads, flashpoints, vanillin, cure guidance), and labels every suggested test length, sample count or score as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from September 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as an oil's vanillin percentage or a wick's burn rate — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI product pages phrase their ranges as a share of wax weight, so at 8% the difference is small but real. Oil cost per candle = grams of oil × the 1 kg price ÷ 1,000. Fragrance chemistry and burn behaviour are described as general principles, not CSI laboratory data. Burn-test lengths, sample counts, cure checkpoints beyond the product pages' stated 48–72 hours, and scoring scales are suggested starting points to validate. Worked examples are illustrations.
