In a 200 g candle, the fragrance oil can cost more than the wax
Most makers compare waxes line by line and pick oils by scent alone. At 200 g that is the wrong way round. The oil in a 200 g candle is only 16 g, but it can cost as much as the 184 g of wax beside it, and sometimes more.
Put the oil on the same sheet as the wax
Work the oil the same way you work the wax: grams in the candle × price per gram. Sandalwood at ₹5,026.80 per kilogram gives 16 × 5.0268, about 80 rupees of oil per candle, close to the ₹93.36 of CSI 464 wax. What that means for pricing a range
If every 200 g candle in your range sells at one price, your margin varies by scent, not only by wax. A vanilla candle and a lemon candle in the same jar and wax can differ by more than the gap between your cheapest and your dearest wax. Some makers price by scent family for this reason. Others keep one price and accept thinner margins on the expensive oils. Either is fine, as long as you have done the sum.
The trap: trimming wax cost by switching to a cheaper wax, then launching a new premium scent that costs more than the saving. Check the oil line before the wax line.
Lowering fragrance to save money
Dropping the load below 8% cuts oil cost, but it also weakens throw, which is usually what the customer is paying for. Test a lower load before relying on it, and keep the stated range of each oil in view: Lavender, Citrus Lemon and Dark Vanilla state 6–10% in candles.
