Flakes, pearls or chunks: the verdict in one table
Mishri, granulated sugar and powdered sugar taste the same once they dissolve in your chai. What differs is how fast they dissolve, how neatly a spoonful measures and what happens to the packet on a humid shelf. Soy wax formats work the same way. CSI sells soy in three physical shapes: flakes (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468), pellets or pearls (Natural Soy Pearl Wax; Soy Wax 464 Pellets are currently out of stock) and chunks (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Eco Soy CSI 400, and Soy Pillar Wax for moulded candles).
Once wax is fully liquid it has no memory of the shape it arrived in. A flake and a chunk of the same grade, melted to the same temperature, are the same liquid. So the question “flakes or pellets?” splits into two questions that are easy to confuse. The first is about handling: melt time, weighing accuracy, dust, clumping, shelf space and how the wax feeds into a melter. The second is about performance: fragrance ceiling, finish, adhesion and throw. Format answers the first. The grade inside the bag answers the second, and that is why the table below keeps both in view.

Read across the rows and the biggest gaps have nothing to do with shape. The fragrance ceiling runs from 10% to 13% to “not published”, and the price runs from ₹399.00 to ₹637.00 per kilo. Neither spread lines up with shape. The cheapest soy in the range is a chunk (CSI 400), and so is one of the two grades with the highest published ceiling (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks); the other 13% grade is a flake (CSI 468), and the pearls sit in the middle on price while publishing no ceiling at all. Only the last two columns change with format. That is the honest shape of this comparison: format is a bench decision worth a few minutes and a few grams per batch, and grade is the candle decision.
What flakes, pearls and chunks actually are
Flakes: thin sheets with a lot of surface
Flakes are thin, irregular shavings, a little like dried coconut flakes or cornflakes. Both CSI flake grades describe their form on the product page: CSI 464 is “available in flake format for easy melting and handling”, and CSI 468 offers “flake format for easy melting and batching”. The shape earns those phrases in two ways. A thin piece has a great deal of surface for its weight, so it softens quickly once heat reaches it. And flakes slide off a scoop in small, controllable amounts, so a 200 g target on a digital scale is easy to hit without breaking anything.
The trade-offs are physical too. Flakes stack loosely with air between them, so a kilo of flakes usually takes up more room in a bag, a shelf or a melter bowl than a kilo of chunks. Thin edges break in transit, so the bottom of a well-travelled bag holds crumbs and fine powder. That powder is the same wax — melt it with the rest — but it clings to plastic scoops in a dry, air-conditioned room and drifts if you pour from height. Under weight and heat, flakes also compact: a 10 kg bag at the bottom of a courier stack can arrive as a firm, pressed slab rather than loose shavings.
Pellets and pearls: small beads that pour like grain
Pellets and pearls are small rounded beads. They flow: tip a bag and they run into a jug like rice or sabudana, which is why makers who scoop large amounts or feed a melter by hand often prefer them. They produce very little dust. The Natural Soy Pearl Wax page says the “convenient pearl form makes measuring and melting a breeze” and describes the wax as having “a beautiful pearlescent shimmer” and as “made from a blend of soy wax” — those are the page’s words. It does not publish a fragrance ceiling, working temperatures or a fuller composition, so ask on WhatsApp before you plan a formula around it.
Two practical notes. First, stock: the 1 kg pack has 29 in stock and the 5 kg pack 6, but the 10 kg pack has only 3 and the 50 kg pack 1 — enough to buy, not enough to build a festive production plan on. Second, the name: Soy Wax 464 Pellets, a separate product, is currently out of stock. Beads of beeswax and paraffin exist in CSI’s catalogue too, but they are different waxes altogether; the pellet shape tells you nothing about what the bead is made of.
Chunks: compact, cheap to pack, awkward at small weights
Chunks are irregular broken pieces, typically large enough to pick up one at a time. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page lists the format as “Chunks — easy to measure and melt”, and the Eco Soy CSI 400 page as “Chunks (easy to weigh + melt)”. Chunks pack densely, shed the least dust and hold up well to rough handling. Their weakness is arithmetic: when you need exactly 200 g, the last chunk rarely weighs what you need, and a big chunk melts slowest from cold because most of its wax is buried away from the heat.
Every one of these product pages describes its own shape as easy to measure or melt, and in ordinary use that is true of all three. The useful question is not which shape is easy but which kind of easy suits your bench: to-the-gram weighing, fast pouring from a bag, or a compact store that survives a rough courier.
Melt speed: surface area, air gaps and the starter pool
The physics is simple enough to do on paper. Cut the same volume of wax into thinner or smaller pieces and you expose more surface to the heat. The table uses round, illustrative sizes — CSI does not publish piece dimensions for any format, and real bags hold a spread of sizes — but the proportions are what matter: a thin flake exposes about 11 times as much surface per cubic centimetre as a 3 cm chunk.

Real melting is messier than the table, for one reason: air. A pot of dry flakes is mostly air, and air is a poor conductor of heat — which is why a quilt keeps you warm. The flakes touching the hot base melt first while the heap above them sits almost untouched, insulated by its own air gaps. Pearls pack more tightly and touch each other and the base at more points. Chunks leave large voids and touch the base only at their corners. In each case, the moment a layer of liquid wax forms, the picture changes: every remaining piece is now surrounded by hot liquid, which carries heat far better than air, and the high-surface shapes vanish quickly.
That leads to the rule that matters more than the shape you buy: melt from a liquid pool, not from a heap. Once you do, the gap between flakes, pearls and small chunks narrows sharply on a typical small batch. The format that still stands out is the large chunk, because its core stays solid long after the pieces around it have gone.
Put roughly a fifth of the batch in the melter or double boiler first and let it go fully liquid. Then feed the rest in handfuls, stirring gently with a bamboo stirring stick (5 for ₹118.00) so each addition sinks into hot wax instead of sitting on top. With chunks, break the largest pieces to roughly walnut size before they go in. Keep a Pen Thermometer (₹354.00) in reach: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to melt to approximately 80–85°C, and a starter pool lets you reach that without pushing the heater harder.
What the melter changes. The Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360.00) has a 1 litre bowl and two settings: its page lists Gear I at 300W for 70–85°C, naming soy wax among its best uses, and Gear II at 600W for up to 100–120°C, listed for batch production, paraffin and beeswax. One reviewer, Priya Singh, says it “melt wax very quickly”, and asks for a 2–3 litre version. That capacity is a volume. Loose flakes and pearls fill the bowl long before they amount to a litre of molten wax, so expect to top up two or three times as the heap slumps — easier with flakes and pearls than with chunks that will not fit through a narrow gap. Molten wax is lighter than water, so a litre of it weighs less than a kilo.
At workshop scale, format fades further. The Electric Wax Melter (Imported) (₹21,240.00 for the 10 kg model) is described on its page as melting 9.5 litres of wax at a time. Sonal Sahani, who reviewed it after nine months of use, writes: “10 kgs of wax melts in mere 20-30 minutes, the funnel is soo good, the wax is never stuck.” At that scale heater power, batch weight and thermostat settings decide the melt time, and the shape of the wax is a rounding error. Weighing, fragrance maths and why chunks drift
CSI’s product pages state fragrance loads as a percentage of wax weight: 200 g of wax at 8% takes 16 g of oil. With flakes or pearls you tip the bag until the scale reads 200 and stop. With chunks, the last piece decides the batch. Suppose the scale reads 190 g, you need 10 g more, and the smallest chunk in reach weighs 35 g: you land on 225 g, 25 g over. If the oil was already weighed out for 200 g — which is exactly how many makers work, pouring oil into a cup first — the candle is quietly under-scented.

At a single 200 g candle, one 25 g chunk turns an 8% recipe into a 7.1% candle — about 11% less oil per gram of wax than the test candle you approved. At a 10% recipe the same overshoot gives 8.9%. Scale the batch up to 5 kg and the same 25 g piece is noise: 7.96%. With flakes or pearls, a 2 g overshoot at 200 g still leaves 7.9%. This is why small-batch makers who weigh per jar tend to prefer flakes or pearls, and why production makers weighing whole melter loads rarely care.
The overshoot does a second thing. Pour 225 g of wax into a jar sized for 200 g and the fill line rises, the headspace shrinks and the wick you chose for the test candle now has more wax to melt. None of this is visible at the pouring stage; it shows up weeks later as a candle that smells weaker and burns differently from the approved sample. Dust, clumping and storage through Indian summers and monsoons
Dust and fines. Flakes shed the most: thin edges snap in transit, and the fine fraction collects at the bottom of the bag. It is not contamination and not a sign of poor wax — it is the same material in smaller pieces, and it melts with everything else. Pour it gently rather than from height, and wipe the scale pan so powder does not add grams to the next weighing. Pearls shed very little. Chunks shed almost none, though they can arrive with a few broken corners.
Clumping in heat. Wax surfaces soften as the temperature climbs, and softened pieces that touch will stick together. The more contact points a format has, the more completely it fuses: pearls and flakes can arrive from a May delivery to Delhi or Nagpur as one solid block, while chunks tend to stick into a few large lumps. A fused block is the same wax. Break it inside the sealed bag with a clean rubber mallet or rolling pin, or melt it as a block using a starter pool — slower, but perfectly usable, provided it is clean and dry.
Moisture is a different problem. Water beads or a damp feel inside a bag after monsoon transit through Mumbai or Kochi is not a shape issue, but loose formats with more exposed surface give damp air more to settle on. Water and hot wax do not mix well: droplets can spit in the melter and leave pits or cloudy patches in a finished top. Dry any damp wax thoroughly at room temperature on a clean tray before it goes near heat.
Shelf life and shelf space. The CSI 464 page states a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage and asks you to keep the wax away from direct sunlight and moisture; the CSI 468 page states 60 months and asks you to keep it sealed. The other soy grades on this page do not publish a shelf life. On space, flakes are the most demanding: a shelf that holds a 10 kg bag of chunks may not hold 10 kg of flakes, and a loose, fluffy bag is also easier to puncture on a steel rack edge.
CSI does not publish bulk density for any format, and it varies with how the bag has settled, so measure your own. Place a 1 litre jug on the scale and tare it. Fill it loosely with wax to the 1 litre line without pressing down, and note the weight. Empty it, repeat twice, and average the three readings. You now know how many grams of that bag fit in a litre of storage tub — and roughly how full your melter bowl will look before it slumps. Do it once for each format you buy; it takes five minutes and ends the guessing when you plan shelf space before a festive run.
Price per kilo and per candle, by format
The table lists every pack of every in-stock soy format that has a published price per kilo, with the wax cost of one 200 g candle and the stock count on 11 September 2026. Two patterns stand out. Pack size matters for some grades and not others. And within the loose formats, the cheapest per kilo is the one that publishes the least.

A candle is more than wax, so here is the whole material cost, using an illustrative costing unit of 200 g of wax plus 16 g of Rajnigandha Tuberose Fragrance Oil (8% of wax weight, inside the page’s recommended 6–10% for candles; ₹4.46 per gram at the 1 kg pack, so ₹71.36) and one Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) at ₹5.90. At the 5 kg rate: CSI 400 chunks ₹157.10, Natural Soy Pearl ₹162.22, CSI 464 flakes ₹178.74, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹197.06 and CSI 468 flakes ₹204.66. Jars, labels and packaging are excluded.
Look at where the money goes. In the CSI 464 candle, the oil is 40% of the material cost. Pearls undercut CSI 464 flakes by ₹82.60 a kilo at 5 kg — ₹16.52 per candle, ₹1,652.00 per hundred candles, or about 9% off the material cost of the flake candle. That is a real saving for a maker pouring a few hundred candles a month. What it buys is a wax with no published fragrance ceiling or temperatures, against a flake with both. Whether that trade is worth ₹16.52 a candle depends on whether you are prepared to test and ask before you pour.
The page describes a 100% soy container wax in flake form for single-pour candles, with excellent glass adhesion, a creamy, opaque finish and low frosting. It publishes a fragrance ceiling of up to 10%, gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring, and states a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage. For a maker weighing wax jar by jar, it combines the easiest format to weigh with the fullest published specification of the flake grades, at a flat ₹507.40/kg from 1 kg to 10 kg.
Jaya Sawlani’s review sums up the practical side: “Soy wax quality is the best, which ever products ordered were properly packed and delivered as early as possible, timely response to the inquiries.” Its weak spot is the one every flake shares — a big, soft bag that needs a sealed tub once opened.

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹599.00/kg) carries the highest published ceiling of any 100% soy grade here — up to 13%, with 8% as a starting point and 10% recommended — and the fullest method: melt to approximately 80–85°C, add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for 2 full minutes, pour at 75–80°C. Eco Soy CSI 400 (₹399.00/kg) is the cheapest soy in the range, produced in India, with fragrance added at 85°C (80–90°C) and poured directly; its fragrance ceiling is not published.

You melt in a double boiler or a 1 litre melter and weigh wax jar by jar. Weighing accuracy matters most to you, and a stray chunk costs the most. Buy flakes: a 500 g pack of CSI 464 at ₹260.00 gives two 200 g candles with 100 g left for a test tin. If the smaller bag feels expensive per kilo (₹520.00 against ₹507.40 at 1 kg), remember that the premium on a trial pack is the price of finding out whether the wax suits your jar before you own five kilos of it.

On a 1 litre melter that means many refills, so the format that feeds the bowl fastest saves real time: flakes and pearls both top up easily; chunks need breaking to fit a busy bowl. You weigh whole melter loads, so drift is irrelevant and melt time belongs to the machine. Buy on grade, price per kilo and stock depth, and ignore shape. On 11 September 2026, CSI 464 had 96 of its 10 kg pack in stock and CSI 400 had 29 of its 5 kg pack; Natural Soy Pearl had 3 of its 10 kg pack and 1 of its 50 kg pack. A production calendar needs a wax you can reorder in the same pack next month, which is a stronger argument than any format.

Soy Wax 464 Pellets are currently out of stock. The obvious substitute shares the number: CSI 464 flakes. Treat it as what it is on the store — a separate product with its own published figures (up to 10%, 80–90°C working range) — and re-test rather than assuming a like-for-like swap.
A word on checkout costs. Loose formats are bulkier per kilo, and customers notice what a heavy order adds up to. Jinal, reviewing a ceramic jar, puts it plainly: “Only i felt little costly during checkout when its kg amount calculated.” Two reviews of CSI soy grades go further and call the delivery charges high.
