The monthly fragrance formula

Fragrance load is the share of the finished candle that is oil. On a 200 g candle at 8%, that is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Everything a manufacturer needs to plan a month follows from applying that to each product and adding up. Written out: oil (g) = candles × candle weight (g) × load, and wax (g) = candles × candle weight (g) × (1 − load). Divide by 1,000 for kilos. The formula is the same whichever oil or wax you use; only the load changes it.

Two things are worth noticing. First, oil scales with load much faster than wax does: going from 8% to 13% on 200 g candles raises oil by 62.5% (1.6 kg to 2.6 kg) while wax falls only 5.4%. A load change is a fragrance-budget change. Second, the per-100 figures are clean enough to do in your head, which is the point — a production planner should be able to say "600 × 200 g at 10% is 12 kg of oil" without opening a spreadsheet.

A worked month for a three-SKU line

The allowance applies to wax — spills, top-ups and the film left in a melter — and is a planning figure, not a measured loss rate. Oil is weighed per batch and should not need one, although the last few grams in a kilo bottle rarely pour cleanly. Now the fragrance side. The 13.4 kg has to be split across scents, and that split should come from your own sales records, not from equal shares. If the 200 g jar sells in four scents and one of them is half its sales, that one scent alone uses 4 kg a month on that SKU. Start with the formula per SKU, then per scent within each SKU, and only then add up per oil. The result is the order.

Scent library size vs SKU sprawl

A manufacturer's fragrance volume is fixed by candle sales, not by the number of scents. Add scents and each one gets a smaller share of the same oil. That has three costs a buyer can measure: how long a kilo stays open, how much cash sits in fragrance stock, and how many oils need testing, documents and quality checks. Doubling the library from 12 to 24 scents doubles the stock you hold and the oils you must document, while halving each scent's turnover. Load planning by wax

The maximum load is a property of the wax, stated by the wax's product page, and it is a formulation limit rather than a regulatory one. For a manufacturer it sets the ceiling on fragrance per candle and therefore the ceiling on fragrance per month. Here is what CSI's container waxes state, and what that means for the oil order.

Three planning rules come out of that table. One: a line split across two waxes has two ceilings, so the fragrance forecast must be done per wax, not per month. Two: where a page states no load, plan at a conservative 8% and let a cured burn test justify anything higher — an unstated ceiling is not a high one. Three: temperatures travel with the wax, not the oil. Documents and batch consistency

Manufacturers selling into retail, hospitality or corporate gifting are routinely asked for fragrance documentation. The two documents that come up most are the MSDS (material safety data sheet), which sets out handling, storage and hazard information for the oil, and IFRA documentation, which relates the oil to usage guidance by product category. None of this requires laboratory equipment. It requires a scale, a thermometer, a notebook or spreadsheet, and the discipline to fill it in at the bench.
