Will adding more fragrance oil fix weak hot throw? Rarely, and only if you are genuinely under the load the pair allows. CSI 464 states up to 10% of wax weight and the Chunks up to 13%, but most oil pages state 6–10% for soy candles — the lower figure governs. Past that you are paying ₹59.81 per jar for oil the pool cannot carry.
How do I tell whether it is the wick or the fragrance oil? Measure before you smell. At the three-hour mark a 50 mm pool in a 70 mm jar is 19.63 cm² of the 38.48 cm² surface, about 51% — a wick problem, whatever the oil does. A pool that reaches the wall and still smells thin moves the suspicion to the oil, the load or the cure.
Can the room make a good candle smell weak? Yes, and it is free to test. A 12 × 14 ft living room at 9.5 ft holds roughly 45 m³ of air against about 27 m³ in a 10 × 10 ft bedroom — the same jar is asked to do about 1.7 times the work. A ceiling fan on speed 3 or an open monsoon window empties the room faster than one wick can fill it.
The seven causes, in the order worth checking
Hot throw is evaporation. Scent leaves the liquid melt pool, not the solid wax below it, so a burning candle is really a small warm dish of scented oil with a flame keeping it warm. That gives you three physical levers — how wide the liquid surface is, how warm it gets, and how long it stays that way — and one more that has nothing to do with the candle: the volume of air you are asking it to fill, and whether your nose is still capable of reading it.
The order below is not a survey. CSI does not publish failure statistics for its waxes and we are not going to invent any. It is an order of cost. Causes you can rule out tonight for ₹0.00 come first; causes that need a re-pour come next; and the two suspects most makers reach for first — the oil and the wax — come last, because they are the most expensive to be wrong about. A 50 g reference oil is ₹230.00. A three-jar wick ladder is ₹436.52. A 500 g trial bag of a second wax is ₹260.00. None of that is money you want to spend on a candle that simply needed nine more days.

Cause 1 · The candle is not cured yet
Soy sets long before it settles. The wax crystallises, the fragrance distributes itself through that structure, and the two keep rearranging for days after the jar is cool enough to touch. Burn on day one and you are testing an unfinished product. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page is explicit about this: cure a minimum of 48 hours, and ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing. That single line settles more weak-throw arguments than anything else on this page.
You will also see shorter numbers. Several CSI fragrance oil pages give cure times of 24 to 48 hours or 48 to 72 hours for best scent throw, and they are not wrong — that is when a candle becomes fit to burn and judge provisionally. The longer window is about something else: how much better it can still get. General practice across the soy container trade is 14 to 21 days by fragrance family, with heavy woods, ouds and gourmands taking the long end and light citrus and aquatics settling sooner. Treat 48 hours as the earliest you may test and day 14 as the day you are allowed to have an opinion.
Cure conditions matter more in India than most imported advice admits. Lids on, out of sunlight, somewhere that stays roughly 25–30°C. A steel almirah in an inner room is close to ideal. The top of a fridge, a terrace room in Ahmedabad in May at 40°C-plus, or a shelf above a gas stove are not — repeated warm-and-cool cycles push oil towards the surface and the jar wall, and you lose some of it before the candle is ever lit. In Mumbai, Kochi or Kolkata during monsoon, lids also keep damp air off the surface.
Causes 2 and 3 · The test, the room and your nose
A soy candle has said nothing useful in its first twenty minutes. The pool is still opening, the wax nearest the wall is still solid, and the air in the room has not turned over yet. Give it three hours with the door shut and the fan off, then leave the room for ten minutes and walk back in from outside. The moment you step through the door is the only honest reading you get, because it is the only moment your nose is not already full of the smell.
That is olfactory adaptation, and it is not a candle-making superstition — it is the ordinary reason you stop smelling your own house. Sitting next to a burning candle for an hour guarantees you will under-rate it. The fix costs nothing: ten minutes outside, preferably somewhere with a different smell, then back in. If you are testing more than one jar, test them on different days or in different rooms, never side by side on one table, where the two pools share the same air and you end up scoring a blend.
Then measure the room. A 12 × 14 ft living room at a 9.5 ft ceiling holds roughly 45 m³ of air. A 10 × 10 ft bedroom holds about 27 m³. The same 200 g jar is being asked to do about 1.7 times the work in the first room, and no fragrance load fixes a volume problem — two jars do, or a smaller room. Add Indian air movement to that: a ceiling fan on speed 3, a window open through the monsoon, or a split AC recirculating and drying the air all shift scented air away from your nose faster than one wick can replace it. Makers in Chennai and Hyderabad who test with the AC running routinely under-rate perfectly good candles.
Cause 4 · The melt pool never gets big enough
This is the cause worth measuring rather than guessing at, because pool area does not grow in step with pool width — it grows with the square of it. Lay a steel ruler across the jar at the three-hour mark, read the liquid diameter in millimetres, and compare it with the inside diameter of the jar. The table shows what that gap is actually costing you in evaporating surface.

Read the first and third rows together and the point lands. A 50 mm pool in a 70 mm jar is working from 19.63 cm² of a possible 38.48 cm² — about 51% of the surface you designed. In an 85 mm jar the same 55 mm pool leaves you at roughly 42%, which is why big jars punish under-wicking so badly and why a single wick that was fine in a votive fails visibly when you scale the jar up. No fragrance load recovers that. You are not short of scent; you are short of surface.
The fix is a wick ladder, and it is the first paid check on this page. Cause 5 · The oil is doing a different job
Fragrance oils differ in how much of their weight is volatile enough to leave a 50-something-degree pool and stay in the air. CSI product pages state a strength for most oils in plain words, and it is worth reading them literally: where a page says strong throw, it says so, and where it says moderate to strong — as the Sandalwood page does — that is a deliberately different claim. Pages also state a candle usage range, and several give a flashpoint and vanillin content. Below is what five oils commonly used in soy publish, with what 16 g costs at 1 kg pricing, which is one jar at the series unit.

Two practical readings come out of that table. First, the spread in cost per jar between the cheapest and dearest of these five is only about ₹23.73 — so an oil swap is a cheap experiment relative to a wax swap, and there is no reason to persist with an oil that has failed a fair three-hour test. Second, a good reference oil is a diagnostic tool. Keep one oil whose behaviour you know well, at a load you have used many times, and pour a single jar of it whenever a batch reads weak. If the reference jar is also weak, the oil was never the problem — the pool, the cure or the room was.
One rule prevents most load arguments. When the wax page and the oil page disagree, the lower figure governs. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states up to 13% of total wax weight, but if your oil page says 6–10% for candles, your ceiling is 10%, not 13%. Pushing past the oil's stated range does not buy throw; it buys a jar that may sweat, may leak at the base and may burn with a different flame than you tested. Both documents are available on request — ask for the MSDS and IFRA paperwork on WhatsApp before you commit a large batch.
Cause 6 · The heat drifted somewhere in the process
The fragrance-add window is the one that matters most here. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to melt to approximately 80–85°C, add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for a full 2 minutes, then pour at 75–80°C. Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for fragrance at 85°C within an 80–90°C window, stirred gently for 2 minutes, then poured directly. CSI 464 gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is a different animal entirely — melting point 50–53°C, pour at 58–60°C — so a routine built around a 100% soy grade will be wrong for it in both directions.
Add too cool and the oil never disperses properly; it sits in pockets, some of it separates, and the candle throws unevenly from top to bottom. Stir for twenty seconds instead of two minutes and you get the same outcome with a tidier conscience. The two-minute stir is not a ritual — it is the time it takes to get roughly 8% of a viscous liquid evenly through a warm one without whipping air into it. Slow, full, bottom-to-top passes, not a fast whisk.
Indian kitchens make this harder than the instructions imply. A steel pot over a gas flame overshoots fast, and by the time the thermometer reads 85°C the wax at the bottom has been far hotter. A double boiler is steadier. A Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00 holds temperature while you work, which matters more than melting speed — ambient temperature swings between a 40°C Nagpur afternoon and an 18°C Shimla evening change how fast your pot falls out of the window. If you buy one diagnostic tool this year, though, buy the cheaper one: a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 turns "about right" into a number you can write down and repeat.
Cause 7 · The load and the wax are below what the pair allows
Work out your real ceiling from two documents, not from a rule of thumb. Take the wax page figure — CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13% — take the oil page range, and use the lower. Eco Soy CSI 400 is the honest exception: its page does not publish a fragrance ceiling at all. We would rather say that plainly than guess on your behalf, so if you are building a large run on CSI 400, ask for the figure on WhatsApp first.
Now see what a load change is actually worth. At the series unit, 200 g of wax at 8% carries 16 g of oil. Moving to 10% adds 4 g — about ₹14.95 of Roasted Coffee per jar, a little under a rupee a gram either way. It is real, and if you have been sitting at 6% because a blog post told you to, going to your true ceiling is worth doing. What it will not do is rescue a candle whose pool covers half the jar, or one that is nine days from being properly cured. That is why it is cause seven: the gain is small and bounded, while the four free causes above it are unbounded.
Wax grade matters in a narrower way than most makers expect. At 200 g a jar of Eco Soy CSI 400 costs ₹79.80, CSI 464 costs ₹101.48 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks costs ₹119.80 — a spread of ₹40.00 per candle. What differs between them for throw purposes is headroom and finish, not some hidden strength rating: the Chunks and CSI 468 let a compatible oil go to 13%, CSI 464 stops at 10%. If your oil tops out at 10% anyway, paying more per kilo buys you nothing you can smell. One genuine mismatch to rule out: Soy Pillar Wax is sold for moulds and pillars, not jars — in a container it will not behave like a container wax, and no wick will make it.

Spend in this order and you will spend less. The table sets each fix against what it costs at CSI September 2026 prices, how long it takes before it tells you anything, and — the column most guides leave out — how often it is likely to be a dead end.

Put a production number on it. Fifty Diwali jars at the series unit cost ₹7,275.40 in wax, oil and wick before the container. Running every paid check on this page — a wick ladder, a reference oil, a thermometer and a wax trial — comes to ₹1,280.52, which is about 9 jars worth of materials. Pouring fifty jars of a formula you have not diagnosed and finding out in November costs the whole ₹7,275.40, plus the season. If you are pouring for Diwali on 8 November 2026, a 14-day cure plus courier time puts your pour date at about mid-October — which leaves room for exactly one proper test round if you start it now.
A last note on jar size, because it quietly decides how much throw you have bought. At the same 8% ratio, a 50 g votive carries about ₹32.32 of wax and oil against ₹139.61 in a 200 g jar. A votive is a smaller engine in every sense — less pool, less oil, less running time — so judging it against a 200 g jar in the same room and calling the fragrance weak is a category error. Match the candle to the room, then diagnose.
