How do I tell frosting from wet spots? Location settles it. Frosting appears on the top surface and against the glass as fine, even, directionless feathering. A wet spot is only ever visible through the glass, has a clean edge, and will fade for a few minutes if you cup the jar in warm hands — frosting will not move.
Are white patches a defect I should not sell? Most are cosmetic. The ones worth stopping for are a pull-away groove at the rim you can catch a fingernail in, large trapped air pockets, and anything caused by using a pillar wax such as Soy Pillar Wax in a jar — that grade is sold for moulds, not containers.
Do white patches change how the candle burns? Usually not at all. Frosting, bloom and mottling are surface and structural effects that burn away with the first melt pool. The exceptions are large air voids near the wick and a fragrance load pushed past the wax page's stated maximum — up to 10% for CSI 464, up to 13% for the Chunks and CSI 468.
Six white patches, and what each one actually is
Soy wax is a plant fat, and plant fats do not freeze into a single uniform solid the way a sheet of glass does. They build a crystal structure as they cool, and that structure is sensitive to how fast the heat left, what was dissolved in the wax at the time, and what the wax was touching while it set. A white patch is that structure, or an absence of it, becoming visible. Six different situations produce a mark a customer would describe the same way, and they have almost nothing in common except the colour.
This page does one job: it tells you which of the six you are looking at. It does not run through prevention protocols — the frosting guide and the wet spots guide already cover those, and the identification has to come first anyway. Fixing frosting when you have a dye problem wastes a fortnight.

Only two of the six are pour-day faults you can cure with process alone. Two are inherent to the material and will come back on some jars whatever you do. One is a colouring mistake that is permanent the moment the wax sets. One happens after the candle has left you. Treating them as a single problem called “frosting” is why so many makers remelt batches that were never faulty.
There is an honest caveat to state before the method. CSI publishes finish claims for its waxes — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is described on its page as having low frosting and minimal blooming, Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 as having minimal frosting, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page says the wax produces smooth tops and minimal frosting or wet spots when used correctly. What is not published, by CSI or by most suppliers, is a measured frost rating, a photograph standard, or a percentage of jars that will show a patch under given conditions. So this page works from what you can observe on your own bench rather than from numbers nobody has published.
Location first: the four zones of a jar candle
Pick the jar up and look at it three times, in this order. First look through the glass from the side, at eye level, with a window or lamp behind you. Then look straight down at the top surface. Then tilt the jar and run your eye along the rim where the wax meets the glass. Those three looks map onto the four zones in the diagram above, and each zone hosts a different short-list.

Zone D is the only one you can also feel. Run a fingernail along the top edge where the wax meets the glass: if it drops into a groove, the wax has shrunk away from the wall and the white line you can see is the glass showing through an air gap. That single check separates a cosmetic rim ring from a serious adhesion failure faster than any photograph.
A jar in frosted, matte or coloured glass hides zones B and C almost completely, which is worth knowing in both directions. The White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 each in a pack of ten will conceal a wall patch that the ₹94.40 Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid would show off. That is a presentation decision, not a fix — and for diagnosis it is a handicap. Pour your test jars in clear glass even if you sell in matte, because a defect you cannot see is a defect you cannot name.
Three bench tests that name the patch in fifteen minutes
None of these need equipment you do not own. They are general candle-making bench practice rather than CSI laboratory procedures, and they work on any supplier's soy wax. Run them on one jar from the batch, in order, and write the result down before you move on — the point is the sequence of answers, not any single one.

Timing: when the patch appeared narrows it to two
Every one of the six has a characteristic moment of arrival, because each depends on a different physical process with its own clock. Trapped air is decided in the two seconds the wax leaves the pitcher. A dye band settles over the minutes while the wax is still fluid. Frosting is a slow rearrangement that needs days and thrives on temperature cycles. Bloom needs a journey. Write the date on the base of the test jar with a marker and the timeline does most of the work for you.

That last row deserves its own sentence, because it catches a lot of people out. The first burn melts the top few millimetres and lets them set again in a room you do not control, under a lid that may go straight back on. The surface a customer sees after one evening is not the surface you poured. If a candle looked perfect when it left and patchy after a burn, you are looking at the customer's room temperature, not your pour temperature — and the honest answer to them is about how soy behaves, not an apology for a defect.
What the wax, the dye, the oil and the jar each contribute
The wax grade
Grade choice changes the odds, not the physics. Every soy container wax on the market can frost, because frosting is the wax doing what plant fats do. What a formulation can do is make the crystals finer and slower to appear, which is what the low-frosting language on the product pages is describing. Read those claims as relative, not absolute — “minimal” has never meant “none” on any wax page anywhere, and CSI does not publish a frost-test figure you could hold it to.

The last row is there because it is a real cause of white patches that nobody suspects. Soy Pillar Wax is formulated to shrink and release from a mould — that is the whole point of a pillar wax. Pour it into glass and it does exactly what it was designed to do: pulls away from the wall, leaving pale gaps all round. A maker who bought it because it was in stock and looked like the same thing will spend weeks blaming their pour temperature. Moving from CSI 464 to CSI 468 for a genuinely frost-prone line adds ₹28.52 per 200 g candle, or ₹1,426.00 across fifty; moving out of a pillar wax into a container wax costs nothing extra at all and fixes the problem outright.
Dye and mica
Liquid candle dye is the most common source of a permanent, unfixable patch, and it is the easiest to prevent. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for dye at full melt, before the fragrance goes in, which is the right order: the wax has the most heat and the lowest viscosity then, so the colour disperses instead of streaking. At an illustrative 0.2 ml in a 200 g candle, Candle Dye Liquid at ₹236.00 for 15 ml works out at about ₹3.15 a candle, so there is no economic reason to rush the stir.
Mica is a different material with a different failure. It is a mineral powder that gives shimmer; it does not dissolve in wax, it is suspended in it. Suspended solids sink, and a slow-setting jar gives them time to do it — which is why a pale, level, slightly chalky band near the base is nearly always mica rather than anything to do with crystals. At ₹57.82 for 10 gm, half a gram of White Mica in a candle is about ₹2.89; the cost of the mistake is the whole candle, because you cannot stir a set jar.
The fragrance oil
Fragrance oil rarely makes a candle whiter. It makes it yellower. Oils containing vanillin darken white and light-coloured wax over time — the Dark Vanilla page states that plainly, and the Apple Cinnamon page lists vanillin as present and asks you to test in white wax. If your patches are cream or buff rather than white, and they are worst where the candle has seen light, you are looking at discolouration, not a white patch at all. The Sandalwood Fragrance Oil page, by contrast, states 0% vanillin and no discolouration, and a flashpoint of 203°C.
Where oil does produce white marks is at the top of the load. Push past what the wax is formulated to hold and the excess has nowhere to go: it beads at the surface, sits in micro-pockets, and shows up as mottling or a greasy sheen that reads as patchy. Two ceilings apply and the lower one governs — the wax page's maximum and the oil page's range. Sandalwood's page gives up to 10% for soy; CSI 464's page gives up to 10%; so 10% is the ceiling for that pair. Put the same oil in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, whose page allows up to 13%, and the oil's own 10% still governs. At the series unit of 200 g of wax with 16 g of oil, you are at 8% — 16 g of Sandalwood is ₹80.43 — and comfortably inside both.
The jar
Glass does two things to this problem. It decides how much you and your customer can see, and it decides how fast the wax next to it loses heat. Thick apothecary glass holds warmth and lets the wall set slowly; thin glass in an air-conditioned room strips heat out of the first millimetre and sets a shell before the body has finished moving. Cleanliness matters as much as thickness: residue and fingerprints are exactly where an air gap starts. A 2 ml wipe of Isopropyl Alcohol Spray from the 1 litre bottle is about ₹1.04 a jar, which is the cheapest line in this entire page.
What a wrong name costs you
Take the batch this page has been costing: fifty 200 g candles in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 with Sandalwood at 8%, an Eco C1 wick and a white matte jar. That is ₹258.61 a candle in materials and ₹12,930.44 for the run, before your labour, packaging or courier. Now look at what each verdict does to that number.

Two things stand out. The first is how cheap a remelt is in rupees — ₹421.85 against a ₹12,930.44 batch is about three and a half per cent — and how expensive it is in days. In the first week of October, three per cent is nothing and a day is everything. The second is that the only genuinely costly mistake is shipping a real fault, and that is also the only one you can prevent for free, by looking at zone D with a fingernail before the lids go on.
There is a presentation lever as well, and it deserves an honest framing rather than a sales one. Switching a line from clear glass to matte hides zones B and C, and across fifty jars that is ₹1,180.00 of extra spend for jars that conceal rather than correct. If the patches are genuinely cosmetic, that is a legitimate design decision many brands make. If they are not, you have paid to stop seeing your own defects, and the customer will still find them when the candle burns down.
Indian conditions that manufacture white patches
Frosting feeds on temperature cycling, and Indian rooms cycle hard. A workshop that reaches 34°C by three in the afternoon and drops to 24°C by six, with a ceiling fan running over the cooling tray for part of it, is putting the wax through exactly the kind of warm-cool swing that grows surface crystals. Candles stored on a shelf against a west-facing wall get the same treatment every day for a fortnight. None of this is a fault in the wax.

Festive timing turns all of this from a cosmetic worry into a scheduling one. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. Working back a 14–21 day cure for soy — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks, and 14–21 days is standard practice for soy container candles — plus courier time to reach a customer before the festival, festive stock should be in the jar by about the middle of October. A batch diagnosed on 20 September can be remelted and re-poured with room to spare. The same batch diagnosed on 25 October cannot, which is the real reason to learn the six names now rather than in the middle of the rush.
One last piece of context that Indian makers ask about constantly: humidity itself does not get into wax. Soy wax and water do not mix, and a damp Mumbai afternoon is not soaking into your candle. What humidity does is condense on cool glass — a jar taken from an air-conditioned cupboard into a 32°C, 85% humidity room will fog on the inside in seconds, and if you pour into it while it is fogged, you get air gaps and occasionally a genuine moisture mark at the wall. The fix is not a dehumidifier. It is letting jars reach room temperature before they are wiped and filled.
