oil, wax, wicks, jars, wick stickers and centering devices for 500 sellable 110 g candles plus 6 tests · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil for 500 candles? At a 110 g fill and 8% load, 8.8 g a candle. With 6 test candles and a 4% allowance: 4,630.9 g. Sandalwood: 4 × 1 kg (₹5,026.80) + 1 × 500 g (₹2,513.40) + 1 × 100 g (₹502.68) + 1 × 50 g (₹271.40) = ₹23,394.68.

How much wax? 101.2 g a candle → 53.26 kg with tests and allowance. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464: 5 × 10 kg (₹5,074.00) + 3 × 1 kg (₹507.40) + 1 × 500 g (₹260.00) = ₹27,152.20.

How many jars and wicks? 516 jars (506 + 10 spare) at ₹47.20 = ₹24,355.20. 521 wicks (506 + 15 spare), bought as 530 for ₹3,127.00.

Should I buy all of it before starting? Yes — once the sample is approved. Spend ₹1,214.22 on a sample kit first, then buy the full list in one order. Splitting oil and wax into two drops costs ₹50,709.32 against ₹50,546.88 and risks a mid-run mismatch. See when to buy.
The short answer
Per candle: 110 g fill (assumed — weigh your jar) at 8%: 8.8 g Sandalwood + 101.2 g CSI 464 + 1 Eco Thin C1 wick + 1 Yankee 130 ml jar = ₹148.69 in materials.
Order need: 506 units + 4% on oil and wax → 4,630.9 g oil, 53.26 kg wax, 521 wicks, 516 jars.
When to buy: Gate 0: sample kit ₹1,214.22. Gate 1, after written approval: the full list, ₹79,447.08, in one order. Labels and boxes wait for artwork proofs.
500 custom candles — where the money goes, and when to spend it Oil ₹23,394.68 Wax ₹27,152.20 Jars ₹24,355.20 Full order purchase ₹79,447.08 · 500 sellable + 6 test candles · 110 g fill (assumed — weigh yours) Gate 0 · sample kit ₹1,214.22 Customer approves sample in writing Gate 1 · full order ₹79,447.08 Buy everything that touches the candle in one go after approval — not before, and not in drops. Packaging and printed labels (not CSI items) wait for artwork proofs.
Bar widths are each material's share of the ₹79,447.08 full-order spend. Wax, jars and oil each take close to a third of the money on this order; wicks, stickers and centering devices together are under a tenth. The gates underneath are the only point at which the money should move: a small sample kit first, the whole list after written approval.
Straight answer
A customer wants 500 custom candles — how much wax, fragrance oil, wick and jar inventory should I buy before starting production?
Buy the whole order's materials before the first pour, plus allowances — but only after the customer has approved a sample in writing. For 500 candles of 110 g (a working fill for a Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml; weigh yours) at an 8% load, each candle is 8.8 g of oil and 101.2 g of wax. Pour 506 units (6 are tests), add a 4% allowance on oil and wax, 10 spare jars and 15 spare wicks, and you need 4,630.9 g of Sandalwood, 53.26 kg of CSI 464, 516 jars and 521 wicks. From in-stock packs that is ₹79,447.08 including wick stickers and centering devices. Before approval, spend only ₹1,214.22 on a sample kit. After approval, buy everything that touches the candle in one order: one oil lot, one wax lot, one jar delivery. CSI 464 is priced flat at ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg and Sandalwood is flat at ₹5.03 a gram from 100 g up, so splitting the purchase saves nothing and adds a second batch to match. Labels and boxes are yours to source; they can wait for artwork proofs. The 100-candle post covers costing the quote itself.
One line: approve first, then buy the whole candle in one order — the packaging can follow.
Full 500-candle list: Sandalwood 4 × 1 kg (₹5,026.80) + 1 × 500 g (₹2,513.40) + 1 × 100 g (₹502.68) + 1 × 50 g (₹271.40) = ₹23,394.68 · CSI 464 5 × 10 kg (₹5,074.00) + 3 × 1 kg (₹507.40) + 1 × 500 g (₹260.00) = ₹27,152.20 · 516 Yankee 130 ml jars = ₹24,355.20 · Eco Thin C1 1 × 500 (₹2,950.00) + 1 × 20 (₹118.00) + 1 × 10 (₹59.00) = ₹3,127.00 · 13 packs of wick stickers = ₹1,300.00 · Wick Centering Device ₹118.00. ₹79,447.08.

The full-order quantities

Five hundred is the size at which small percentages become whole kilos.

At 20 candles, a 4% allowance on wax is 80 g — a handful. At 500 candles it is over two kilos. That is why the allowance, the test candles and the spares have to be written down as separate lines before anything is bought. Here is the scenario: the customer wants 500 custom-labelled candles in a Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml with clear cap, scented with Sandalwood at 8%, poured in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, which is rated up to 10% fragrance load (the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit).

CSI does not publish a fill weight for this jar. We use 110 g of finished candle as a working assumption — plausible for a 130 ml jar poured below the rim with soy wax, which is lighter than water — and show below what happens at 100 g and 120 g. Weigh your own before you order anything.

Why 4% and not 5%? The maker in this example has already poured a 100-candle run in the same jar, so the first-run learning is behind them. Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns as a working assumption; move toward 5% if this is your first run at this size, or if you are pouring by hand from a jug rather than from a melter tap. The six test units are three approval candles (customer, your reference, a spare for a second opinion) and three burn tests spread across the run: one from the first batch, one mid-run, one from the last.

Jars get ten spares — about 2% — because glass chips and cracks in unpacking, in the heat of pouring and in labelling. Wicks get fifteen, because a crooked or buried wick is cheaper to replace than to fix. These are counts you set from your own breakage history; if you have none yet, these are reasonable starting points. The strict-deadline post goes further on buffers when the delivery date cannot move.

Wick stickers earn their place at 500
At 20 candles, a dab of hot wax holds a wick well enough. At 500, consistency matters more: Wick Stickers are 40 for ₹100.00, so 13 packs (520 stickers) cost ₹1,300.00 — ₹2.50 a jar. A wick that lifts off the base during a pour costs a jar, a wick and 110 g of candle.

The fill weight decides everything

Every line in the lead table is a multiple of the fill weight. If the jar actually takes 100 g at your fill line, you have overbought; if it takes 120 g, you will run out of wax about eight candles from the end of every hundred. The table shows the whole order at three fills so you can see the size of the error before it happens.

120 g 5,051.9 g 5 × 1 kg (₹5,026.80) + 1 × 50 g (₹271.40) + 1 × 15 g (₹93.22) ₹25,498.62 58.10 kg 5 × 10 kg (₹5,074.00) + 1 × 5 kg (₹2,537.00) + 3 × 1 kg (₹507.40) + 1 × 500 g (₹260.00) ₹29,689.20

Ten grams of fill moves this order by about 421 g of oil and 4.84 kg of wax — ₹2,103.94 and ₹2,537.00 respectively. That is more than the allowance on either line. The allowance is for loss; it is not a substitute for knowing the fill.

The ml-to-grams trap. A 130 ml jar does not hold 130 g of candle. Soy wax is lighter than water, you pour below the rim, and the wick and any headspace for a lid take room. Fill one jar to the line you will sell, let it set, and weigh it on a scale (₹354.00). Then subtract the empty jar. That number, not the label on the box, goes into the spreadsheet.

When to buy it: two gates, one order

The question is not only how much. It is also what you can afford to be wrong about.

Before the customer approves a sample, the scent, the jar and even the colour can still change. Anything you buy for 500 candles before that point is a bet. So the money moves in two steps. Gate 0 is a sample kit: enough oil, wax, jars and wicks to pour the 6 test units. Gate 1, after written approval, is the full list in one order.

Gate 0 sample kit · sized for 6 test units + 10% · in-stock packs
The ₹1,214.22 you spend before approval
Item Need Bought as Cost
Sandalwood 58.1 g 1 × 50 g (₹271.40) + 1 × 15 g (₹93.22) ₹364.62
CSI 464 667.9 g 1 × 1 kg (₹507.40) ₹507.40
Yankee 130 ml jars 6 6 × ₹47.20 ₹283.20
Eco Thin C1 wicks 6 1 × 10 (₹59.00) ₹59.00
Gate 0 total ₹1,214.22

Everything in the sample kit is used again: the rest of the wax and oil go into the production run, and the spare wicks join the order stock. So Gate 0 is not a cost on top of the order — it is the first part of it, bought early. What it buys you is the right to change your mind cheaply. If the customer asks for a different scent after smelling the sample, you have spent ₹364.62 on Sandalwood, not ₹23,394.68. When the client has not finalised the fragrance covers the case where Gate 0 needs several scents.

Weigh the fillOne jar, filled to the selling line, weighed set. Everything else is multiplied from it.
2
Price the full list, but do not buy itWork out the lead table for your fill and load. You need the ₹79,447.08 figure to quote, not to spend yet.
3
Gate 0 — pour the sample kitBuy the ₹1,214.22 kit. Pour three approval candles and three burn tests. Cure them as you would the order.
4
Get approval in writingScent, load, jar, colour, fill line and wick — confirmed by the customer in a message or document you can point to later.
5
Gate 1 — buy the full list in one orderOil, wax, jars, wicks, stickers. Ask for one wax lot and one oil lot where you can; message CSI on WhatsApp if you need to confirm.
6
Check the delivery before the first pourCount jars, look for chips, weigh the oil and wax against the invoice. A shortfall found on day one is a phone call; on day five it is a missed date.
7
Source labels and boxes against the approved sampleThese are not CSI items. Order them once the artwork is proofed against the approved candle.

Why not buy in two drops?

The usual reason to split a big purchase is cash, and the usual reason not to is price. On this order, price doesn't come into it: CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg, and Sandalwood is ₹5.03 a gram at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg. Two half-size purchases of oil and wax come to ₹50,709.32 against ₹50,546.88 in one go — the difference is only rounding at the pack edges. So splitting buys you cash flow and costs you very little money.

What it costs you instead is consistency. The second drop may be a different production lot of wax and a different batch of oil. Most of the time you would never notice; occasionally a scent reads slightly differently or a wax sets with a different surface, and you have 250 candles that don't quite match the other 250. On a custom order where the customer has a reference sample on their desk, that is a real risk. Buying all the wax from one batch and keeping batches identical go into it properly.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would prefer you bought the whole list today. Don't — not before the sample is approved. A customer who changes scent after approval samples is common enough that the ₹23,030.06 difference between the sample oil and the full oil order is worth protecting. And if cash is the constraint, buying jars and wax first and oil a few days later from the same listing is a reasonable compromise; the 1,000-corporate-candle post works through buying against an advance.
The CSI principle
Approve small. Buy whole. Pour from one lot.
The cheapest insurance on a custom order is a sample kit that can be thrown away. The cheapest production is the one where candle 1 and candle 500 came out of the same bottle and the same bag.

Also on the list: Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 at ₹5.90 each at every pack size (the size shown here is for pricing; confirm yours with a burn test in this jar), Wick Stickers at ₹100.00 for 40, and a Wick Centering Device pack of 5 for ₹118.00. For pouring 55 kg of wax, a Candle Wax Pouring Jug (₹531.00) is the minimum; the 500-in-seven-days post covers whether your melting set-up can keep up.

What is left when the order ships

If everything goes to plan, you finish with about 197 g of Sandalwood and 2.29 kg of CSI 464 unused — the pack rounding plus whatever part of the allowance you didn't lose — along with some spare jars and wicks. That is not waste. It is the start of your next run, or the reference stock for a repeat order from the same customer, which on custom work is common. Keep the spare jars from the same delivery for any replacements the customer asks for later.

What you should not do is fold that leftover into this customer's price. Their quote is built on what their candles consume plus tests and a fair allowance, as in I Received an Inquiry for 100 Candles but Normally Make Only 20 at a Time — How Should I Calculate Raw Materials Before Quoting the Customer?. The pack rounding is yours. On a list this size the rounding is small — 19.1 g of oil and 0.24 kg of wax beyond the allowance — because the packs are small relative to the order. That is one of the quiet benefits of a 500-piece order over a 100-piece one.

At 500 candles, the allowance is kilos, the fill weight is money, and the sample is insurance.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

If the customer comes back asking for 1,000, the method doesn't change — the list doubles, the gates stay. The questions that do change are cash and discount. I Got an Inquiry for 1,000 Corporate Candles — Should I Purchase All the Raw Materials Before Receiving the Customer's Advance? looks at buying before the advance arrives, and which costs fall with volume looks at what you can and can't give away on price.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The supplier-friendly advice would be to buy everything now. This page says wait for written approval, spend a small sample kit first, and it shows that splitting the order into two drops saves almost nothing on our listed prices — so the only reasons to split are cash, not price.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026; Yankee jar, wick-sticker and centering-device prices are from the catalogue pull of 24–25 September 2026, and wick prices are the Blog 760 figures verified 10 September 2026 (re-checked 25 September). Pack combinations use in-stock sizes only; every total is arithmetic shown to two decimals.

The 110 g fill, 8% load, 4% allowance, six test units and the spare counts are working assumptions. The jar's fill weight is not published — weigh your own. For a quote on the full list, stock confirmation, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

how much wax do I need for 500 candles
Multiply the wax in one candle by the units you will pour and add an allowance. For a 110 g candle at 8%: 101.2 g each, 53.26 kg for 506 units with 4%. At 100 g fill it is 48.41 kg; at 120 g, 58.10 kg.
how much fragrance oil for 500 candles
For 110 g candles at 8%, 8.8 g each: 4,630.9 g for 506 units with a 4% allowance. With Sandalwood that is 4 × 1 kg (₹5,026.80) + 1 × 500 g (₹2,513.40) + 1 × 100 g (₹502.68) + 1 × 50 g (₹271.40) = ₹23,394.68. Larger than the 1 kg listing? Ask on WhatsApp.
should I buy all raw materials before starting a bulk candle order
Buy everything that goes into the candle — oil, wax, wicks, jars — in one order after the customer approves a sample in writing, so the whole run comes from one lot. Before approval, buy only a sample kit. Labels and boxes can follow once artwork is proofed.
how many extra jars should I order for breakage
A count based on your own history. With none, about 2% is a reasonable start: 10 spares on 506 units here. Keep the spares from the same delivery for replacements later.
what is the fill weight of a 130 ml candle jar
It is not published for the Yankee 130 ml jar, and ml is not grams. Soy wax is lighter than water and you pour below the rim, so the candle will weigh less than 130 g. Fill one to your selling line, let it set, weigh it and subtract the empty jar. We use 110 g as an assumption.
is it cheaper to buy wax in 10 kg bags
Not for CSI 464 or Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: both are priced the same per kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg (₹507.40 and ₹599.00). Natural Soy Pearl Wax has a small break — ₹450.00 at 1 kg, ₹424.80 a kilo at 5 kg and above. Beyond the listed packs, prices are quoted on WhatsApp.
Size it, approve it, buy it once
A sample kit before approval. The whole candle in one order after it.
For 500 custom candles in Yankee 130 ml jars: ₹1,214.22 to prove the sample, ₹79,447.08 for the full list — Sandalwood, CSI 464, Eco Thin C1 wicks, stickers and jars. Send us your numbers and we will quote and confirm stock.

Non-price figures and assumptions: 110 g finished candle per Yankee 130 ml jar (assumed; fill weight not published); 8% load (8.8 g oil + 101.2 g wax); 6 test units; 4% allowance on oil and wax (plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns — a working assumption); 10 spare jars and 15 spare wicks. CSI 464's 10% ceiling is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit. Wick size is used for pricing only — confirm with a burn test.
