Why most fragrance oils fail in Indian candles
Most fragrance oils sold in India are not engineered for candle wax. They are perfume-grade oils, room spray bases, or generic imports tested only in temperate European or American conditions. When you pour them into hot candle wax, four predictable failure modes emerge. Understanding these is what separates a working candle maker from one who keeps changing fragrance suppliers.
The four failure modes
Why your last batch of fragrance oil disappointed you
- Flash Evaporation Top notes flash off during the pour and the cure, leaving you with a flat, base-note-only candle. The fragrance smelled rich in the bottle and weak in the burn. Cause: the oil was not thermally stabilised for wax integration. Volatile compounds (linalool, citral, top citrus notes, fresh top accords) evaporate before they can bind into the wax matrix.
- Weak Hot Throw The candle smells fine cold, but you can barely smell it from across the room when lit. Cause: perfume-grade oils are formulated for cold-application throw, not heat-driven release. They were never tested in a melt pool. The fragrance does not aerosolise efficiently when heated, so your customer doesn't smell the candle at burn.
- Synthetic Harshness The candle smells chemical, sharp, or medicinal once heated. Cause: low-grade fragrance oils use synthetic camphor, harsh aldehydes, and cheap aroma chemicals as fillers. These compounds smell acceptable on a smelling strip at room temperature and turn aggressive when heated above 60C in a candle vessel.
- Oil Separation You pour the candle and within 24-48 hours you see fragrance oil pooling on the surface or weeping out the sides. Cause: the wax-fragrance ratio exceeded the wax's fragrance binding capacity, or the oil was poorly emulsified. The fragrance never properly integrated into the wax matrix, so it leaves the candle slowly through the cure.
