Best Sandalwood Fragrance Oils for Candle Making in India
Share
What does sandalwood cost per candle? At 8% in a 200g candle (16 g of oil): ₹79.98 with Mint Sandalwood, ₹80.43 with Sandalwood Fragrance Oil, ₹127.97 with Sacred Sandal Ember, ₹141.57 with the brand-inspired sandal oil and ₹145.92 with Santal Noir, all at 1 kg or largest-pack pricing.
Will sandalwood brown my white wax? Not all of them. The Sandalwood Fragrance Oil page states 0% vanillin and no discolouration. The Sacred Sandal Ember page warns of golden or amber toning; Mint Sandalwood and the brand-inspired sandal oil both warn of moderate cream-to-amber toning. Santal Noir's page says nothing either way.
What load should I pour? The lower of the oil page's figure and your wax page's ceiling. Sandalwood Fragrance Oil states up to 10% in soy; Sacred Sandal Ember 8–10%; Mint Sandalwood and the brand-inspired oil 7–10%, starting at 7%. Santal Noir states no candle load at all.
What counts as a sandalwood oil at CSI
Sandalwood sits in the base of a fragrance — the heavy, slow-evaporating end of the composition, which explains almost everything about buying it. A sandalwood candle smells quieter in the jar than a citrus candle and stronger three hours into a burn. It leans on cure time. And because the wood itself is smooth rather than sharp, the character of each oil comes from what a perfumer has put around it: spice, incense, mint, saffron, amber, musk.
CSI's range reflects that. Four oils lead with sandalwood, one brand-inspired oil uses it as a heart, and a further group — mostly oud and woody oils — carry it in the base without being sold as sandalwood. The table below quotes each page's notes exactly as published: a pyramid where the page gives one, a prose profile where it doesn't. Nothing here is our description of the smell.
| Oil | Stated top | Stated heart | Stated base | Stated family / character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood Fragrance Oil | Single note. The page gives a profile, not a pyramid: "Main Aroma Warm, creamy sandalwood - smooth, rich, and sophisticated" · "Undertone Subtle earthy depth - grounding, natural, never sharp" | "Scent Family Woody / Creamy / Warm" | ||
| Mint Sandalwood | "Mint, Eucalyptus, Bergamot" | "Sandalwood, Cedar, Lavender" | "Sandalwood, White Musk, Amber" | "Fresh Woody · Cool · Creamy · Calming" |
| Sacred Sandal Ember | "Soft Incense Smoke, Green Herbal Nuance" | "Creamy Sandalwood, Warm Resins" | Page describes the pyramid as "Creamy Sandalwood with Soft Temple Incense and Warm Amber" | "Woody-Oriental · Sacred · Smooth · Grounding" |
| Santal Noir | "Soft Spice, Subtle Green Accord" | "Creamy Sandalwood, Light Cedar" | "Warm Amber, Musk, Dry Woods" | "A smooth woody fragrance built around classic sandalwood warmth" |
| Brand-inspired sandal oil | "Saffron, Cardamom, Bergamot" | "Sandalwood, Cedar, Rose" | "Amber, Musk, Vanilla, Benzoin" | "Woody Oriental · Creamy Sandalwood · Spiced · Warm" |
| Oil | Where the page puts sandalwood | Largest listed pack | Oil per 200g candle at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mahogany Shea | "natural woody notes of sandalwood and cedar emerge" | 1000 gm ₹4,885.20 | ₹78.16 |
| Saffron Cedarwood | "Base: Wood, Sandalwood, Smoke and Amber" | 1 kg ₹6,867.60 | ₹109.88 |
| White Royal Oud | "Base Notes Creamy sandalwood, ambergris, soft musk" | 1kg ₹8,103 | ₹129.65 |
| Amber Oud Royal | "Base: Amber, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean, Musk" | 1kg ₹11,640 | ₹186.24 |
| Lavender Oud | "Base: Sandalwood, Amber, Tonka, Musk" | 1 kg ₹12,000 | ₹192 |
That second table matters commercially: when a customer says "something like sandalwood", you have five more in-stock answers before buying another sandalwood bottle, and two of them (Mahogany Shea ₹78.16 a candle, Saffron Cedarwood ₹109.88) undercut Santal Noir. The oud-side options are priced for a different shelf — see best oud fragrance oils and best woody fragrance oils for candle making in India.
Every size, every price, and the cost per candle
Every listed pack, the price, and the oil cost inside a 200g candle at 8% and 10%. The per-candle figures use the price per gram of the largest in-stock pack — the best price each oil is listed at. Buy smaller and the cost per candle rises; that sampling premium is quantified further down.
| Oil | Listed packs | Best in-stock per-gram basis | 16 g (8%) | 20 g (10%) | Oil for 100 candles at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mint Sandalwood | 50g ₹299 · 100g ₹549 · 1kg ₹4,999 | 1kg → ₹4.999/g | ₹79.98 | ₹99.98 | ₹7,998.40 |
| Sandalwood Fragrance Oil | 15 gm ₹93.22 · 50 gm ₹271.40 · 100 gm ₹502.68 · 500 gm ₹2,513.40 · 1 kg ₹5,026.80 | 1 kg → ₹5.0268/g | ₹80.43 | ₹100.54 | ₹8,042.88 |
| Sacred Sandal Ember | 100g ₹799 (sold out) · 500g ₹3,999 · 1kg ₹6,999 (sold out) | 500g → ₹7.998/g | ₹127.97 | ₹159.96 | ₹12,796.80 |
| Brand-inspired sandal oil | 50g ₹442 · 100g ₹885 · 1kg ₹8,848 | 1kg → ₹8.848/g | ₹141.57 | ₹176.96 | ₹14,156.80 |
| Santal Noir | 15g ₹166 · 50g ₹499 · 100g ₹919 · 500g ₹4,599 · 1kg ₹9,120 | 1kg → ₹9.12/g | ₹145.92 | ₹182.40 | ₹14,592 |
Two things should shape your order. The two cheapest oils are 45 paise apart per candle — ₹79.98 against ₹80.43 — so there is no price argument between Mint Sandalwood and Sandalwood Fragrance Oil; choose on the opening note and the discolouration statement. And Sacred Sandal Ember is a stock case: its 1 kg pack would be ₹111.98 a candle, but that pack and the 100 g pack are both sold out, leaving the 500g at ₹3,999 — ₹127.97 a candle.
The five oils, judged one by one
Each card shows every listed pack, its price, the price per 100 g and how many 200g candles at 8% it fills. The last column reads ≈0 on a 15 gm pack because 15 g is just under the 16 g one candle needs — a smell-test size, not a pour size.

Which wax each sandalwood suits
An oil page states a load; a wax page states a load. They answer different questions — how much of the oil is useful, and how much the wax formulation will hold — and your candle has to satisfy both. Take the lower of the two as your maximum, then find your best-performing load beneath it by testing.
| Wax | 1 kg price | Stated wax ceiling | Stated temperatures | Working ceiling with these oils |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹599 | Up to 13% · 8–13% · 10% recommended | Add fragrance 80–90°C · pour 70–80°C · cure min 48 h, ideally 1–2 weeks | 10% — every sandalwood oil here stops at 10% |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹507.40 | Up to 10% | Page states melt and pour at 80–90°C | 10% — the wax and the oils agree exactly |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | ₹650 | Up to 13% | Melt 50–53°C · pour 58–60°C | 10%; the low pour suits oils with no published flash point |
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | ₹399 | Not stated | Add fragrance at 80–90°C (85°C), stir 2 minutes | Hold at the oil's figure, 7–10% |
The pairing worth noticing is CSI 468 with the oils that publish no flash point. Santal Noir and Sacred Sandal Ember give no measured figure to work around, and CSI 468 states a melt of 50–53°C and a pour of 58–60°C — the coolest working window in the range. That is no substitute for the SDS, but it means adding oil far below an 80–90°C soy process while you wait for documentation. In paraffin, the Sandalwood page drops to up to 6%, and CSI's paraffins are listed only in 500 g and 1 kg — a small-batch route, not a production one.
Will it tone your white wax?
This is the question sandalwood buyers ask least and regret most. Vanillin, and some amber, resin and benzoin materials, darken wax over weeks rather than during the pour — which is why a candle looks perfect on day one and cream-coloured on day thirty. Four of these five pages address it directly.
| Oil | Page's own words | What to pour it into |
|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood Fragrance Oil | "Vanillin content 0%" · "it will not cause discolouration or yellowing in white or light-coloured wax" | White, frosted or clear glass with pale wax |
| Mint Sandalwood | "may cause moderate cream-to-amber toning in white or light-coloured wax and soap bases" | White, sage-green or natural-wood packaging per the page |
| Sacred Sandal Ember | "contains amber and warm resins that may cause golden or amber toning in white or light-coloured wax over time" | Amber, gold or tan vessels, where toning reads as intentional |
| Brand-inspired sandal oil | "contains vanilla, amber, and benzoin, which may cause moderate cream-to-amber toning in white or light-coloured wax and soap bases over time" | Cream, tan, gold or deep-amber concepts |
| Santal Noir | No discolouration statement published | Unknown — test one jar in daylight for three weeks first |
Notice that one of the two cheapest oils is also the one stating zero vanillin. If your range is white soy in clear glass — the most common Indian starter format — Sandalwood Fragrance Oil is the only oil here whose page positively says the wax will stay as poured. Everything else warns you or is silent, and silence is not reassurance.
What the pages prove — and what they don't
Across CSI's fragrance range, only eighteen pages state a measured flash point. Thirty-two carry the shared line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)" — a threshold for alcohol-based formats, not a measurement — and fifty-six say nothing. In the sandalwood family: one measured value, two thresholds, two blanks.
| Oil | Flash point on the page | IFRA wording on the page | Reviews on the listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood Fragrance Oil | Measured: "Flashpoint 203°C" | "As per IFRA Use within safe usage rates for lotions, body oils, and personal care products" | 1 review · 5★ Reena Bagal: "Very good" |
| Mint Sandalwood | Threshold line only, not a measurement | States IFRA compliance "within category limits" | None yet |
| Sacred Sandal Ember | None published — ask for the SDS figure | Carries IFRA wording; no certificate number or category | 1 review · 4★ Urvashi Patel |
| Brand-inspired sandal oil | Threshold line only: "> 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)" | States IFRA compliance "within these limits" | None yet |
| Santal Noir | None published | No IFRA wording on the page | None yet |
Three rules follow. Never convert a threshold into a number — "> 93°C" does not mean 93°C, and it does not mean 200°C. Treat a missing flash point as a question for WhatsApp rather than a reason to avoid an oil: CSI's stated practice is that SDS and IFRA documentation are supplied on request, and an IFRA document is what tells you the maximum use level for a product category. And read IFRA wording for what it is — the supplier stating the oil is intended for use within IFRA's category limits, not a certificate number we are going to invent.
Reviews deserve the same discipline: there are exactly two published reviews across this whole family, one 5★ and one 4★, both quoted verbatim. Wider-range reviews still teach something — one buyer writes of another CSI oil, "It is highly concentrated", and another, after five years of testing candle fragrances, that she found "strong fragrance in cold throw and hot throw and you can go for the minimum percentage in candle still it will give amazing smell". Both say start low: how to tell if a candle fragrance oil is good quality.
The three-jar sandalwood test, costed
Sandalwood is the family where a blind test pays for itself fastest, because the differences are structural — mint versus incense versus saffron — not differences of strength. Three oils, one wax, one wick, one load. Oil cost ₹558.22; with a kilo of wax, ten wicks and wick stickers, ₹1,316.22.
Buying sandalwood for a production run
Once an oil has won, the question is how much to buy. A 200g candle at 8% needs 16 g, so 100 candles need 1.6 kg — and no oil here is listed in a 1.6 kg pack, so you combine. CSI lists no 5 kg or 10 kg fragrance packs at all; beyond the listed sizes, bulk pricing is quoted on WhatsApp and the listed per-gram prices are the ceiling for that conversation.
| Oil | Packs that make 1.6 kg | Oil cost | Per candle | Wax at ₹599/kg (18.4 kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mint Sandalwood | 1kg + 6 × 100g | ₹8,293 | ₹82.93 | ₹11,021.60 |
| Sandalwood Fragrance Oil | 1 kg + 500 gm + 100 gm | ₹8,042.88 | ₹80.43 | ₹11,021.60 |
| Santal Noir | 1kg + 500g + 100g | ₹14,638 | ₹146.38 | ₹11,021.60 |
| Brand-inspired sandal oil | 1kg + 6 × 100g | ₹14,158 | ₹141.58 | ₹11,021.60 |
| Sacred Sandal Ember | 4 × 500g = 2 kg (no smaller step in stock) | ₹15,996 | ₹159.96 for 2 kg of oil, 125 candles' worth | ₹11,021.60 |
The third line is the one to stare at: Santal Noir instead of Sandalwood Fragrance Oil for the same hundred candles costs ₹6,595.12 more in oil, more than half the wax bill for the run. A ₹558.22 blind test decides that either way. Past 1 kg of one scent, or for a recurring monthly order, message the bulk line — see also how much fragrance oil a candle business needs for 100 candles.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We do not manufacture fragrance oil and we do not sell candles, so we have no reason to talk you into the ₹9,120 bottle. This page says plainly that the two cheapest sandalwood oils are 45 paise apart per candle, that the dearest publishes no candle load, and that one of the most interesting is down to a single pack size.
Every price, pack and stated specification comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, which is always authoritative. Notes, loads, cure times, vanillin figures, flash points and discolouration warnings are quoted only where a page states them, in its own words; where a page states nothing — Santal Noir's load, Sacred Sandal Ember's flash point — we say so. Flash point is reported only from the eighteen CSI pages with a measured value. We make no shelf-life or storage claims and publish no IFRA certificate numbers, because no page states any.
For the SDS or IFRA documentation on a specific oil, bulk pricing above the listed packs, or GST invoicing, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926. Tell us your wax and your jar and we will tell you what the pages state — and what they don't.
