Why bulk wicks are not cheaper — and why you should still buy them in bulk

Here is the arithmetic, because it is the most trustworthy thing on this page. One thousand Eco Candle Wicks in Thin (C1) costs ₹5,900.00 as a hundred packs of 10 at ₹59.00, ₹5,900.00 as ten packs of 100 at ₹590.00, ₹5,900.00 as two packs of 500 at ₹2,950.00, and ₹5,900.00 as the single 1,000 pack. Four routes, one number. The per-wick price is ₹5.90 at every one of them, and the pattern holds on Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 and on Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00.

We could dress that up — put "Save 30%" on the 1,000 pack and quietly raise the 10 pack to make the maths work. Plenty of suppliers do. You would find out at the checkout anyway, and a supplier who was straight about the one thing you could easily verify is worth more than a discount badge.

It helps to know how small the wick is in your cost stack before you optimise it. Take a 200 g container candle: 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999 per 10 kg is ₹110.38; 16 g of Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil at ₹2,832 per kg is ₹45.31; an Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid at ₹236 per pack of 5 is ₹47.20; a wick sticker at ₹100 per sheet of 40 is ₹2.50; and the Eco C1 wick is ₹5.90. That is ₹211.29 of materials, of which the wick is ₹5.90 — 2.8%. The wick is the cheapest thing in the candle and the component most capable of ruining it. Optimise the wick for performance and the wax and jar for cost.

The 61 metre roll: when cutting your own is worth it, and when it is not

This is the one place in the range where volume genuinely changes the shape of the cost, so it deserves proper arithmetic rather than a per-metre headline. At ₹11.59 a metre that is the cheapest wick material CSI stocks — about a seventh of the Eco Braided spool at ₹82.60. The temptation is obvious.

One more point on tooling, because it decides whether self-cutting is pleasant or miserable. Cutting and tabbing at volume wants a Premium Candle Wicking Needle at ₹472 for threading wick through moulds, or the cheaper Wick Inserter Steel Straw at ₹59. How many wicks a month — and the scrap allowance nobody budgets for

Because the unit price does not move, wick planning stops being a negotiation and becomes arithmetic. There are three lines to it, and most makers count only the first.

Line one is production: one wick per single-wick candle, multiplied for three-wick vessels. Line two is pour scrap — the wick that drifts off centre and sets crooked, the sticker that lifts and floats, the wick cut short while trimming, the candle scrapped for a sinkhole. Three per cent is realistic for a tidy bench, five if you are new or pouring fast. Line three is burn testing, and it is the one that gets forgotten: testing consumes wicks and produces no saleable candles, so it never reaches a cost sheet — and then you run short.

Read across a year and the buying decision appears. At 100 candles a month: about 1,320 wicks a year, ₹7,788 — a 500 pack at ₹2,950 every four and a half months, three orders a year instead of twelve. At 300 a month: about 3,780 a year, ₹22,302 — a 1,000 pack covers three months, so four orders a year. At 1,000 a month: about 12,432 a year, ₹73,348.80 — a 1,000 pack monthly with a 100 pack held as buffer. None of those routes is cheaper per wick than any other. All cost ₹5.90. You are choosing a rhythm, not a rate.

Set a reorder point rather than reordering when the box looks empty: never let wick stock fall below one month of production plus the test allowance. Storing wicks so the ones you bought in bulk still work in month four

The whole point of buying four months of wick is that it is still good in month four. Cotton wick is not inert stock — it is absorbent braided fibre with a wax pre-coat, and it takes on whatever is around it. Three rules cover almost everything.

Buy the wick and the wax from the same place, and test one variable at a time

This sounds like a sales line, so here is the reasoning. A wick is never sized in the abstract: it is sized against a specific wax, in a specific jar diameter, at a specific fragrance load. Change any of the three and the burn changes. A wick chart is only worth building if the things it was built against hold still.

Now change wick supplier and wax supplier in the same month, which is what happens when someone chases the cheapest line item on each. The next batch tunnels, and you have two suspects and no way to tell them apart. The only way out is a fresh test matrix: six wicks per combination, several days of burning, a fortnight lost. Holding one variable constant is not loyalty, it is experimental discipline. Standardise on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo and Eco C1 at ₹5.90, and when something changes you know it was the jar, the load or the pour.

The practical version: settle your wax, your wick and your jar as a fixed trio per product line, record them, and treat a change to any one as a change that requires a re-test. Then buy each in whatever quantity your cash flow tolerates — which, for wicks, you can do without any anxiety about missing a volume tier, because on the eco and braided lines there is not one to miss. The only volume decision that costs money to get wrong is the wooden wick pack size, and it is unambiguous: always buy the 100.
