Four suspects, one elimination procedure, run in strict cheapest-first order. Most makers start by changing the wax, which is the single most expensive and most disruptive move available to them. It should be last.
₹0
what the first two elimination steps cost · the complete six-step sequence costs ₹465.32 in test materials · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What causes candle tunnelling? One of four things, and only four: the wax, the wick, the jar or the formula (fragrance load and dye). Behind all four sits a fifth factor that is not a material at all — how the candle was burned, particularly the first burn.

What do I check first? Burn history and the first burn. Both cost ₹0, both take one evening, and between them they explain a large share of the tunnelling reported to us.

What is the cheapest order to test in? Burn history (₹0) → controlled first burn (₹0) → wick (₹5.90–₹9.44 per test wick) → formula (load and dye, ₹0 marginal) → jar (from ₹31.86 each) → wax last (from ₹260 per 500g), because changing wax invalidates every wick result you already have.

Can I change two things at once to save time? No. If you change the wick and the wax together and the tunnel closes, you have a working candle and no knowledge. The next jar diameter puts you back at the start.
The short answer
Tunnelling is a heat-versus-diameter failure. The flame is not delivering enough heat to melt wax all the way to the vessel wall before the burn ends. Every one of the four suspects is a way of reducing heat or increasing the distance it has to travel.
Eliminate in cost order, not in suspicion order: burn history, first burn, then wick, then formula, then jar, then wax.
One variable per test batch. Change one thing, cure the full 14 days, burn under identical conditions, write it down. Three controlled tests beat thirty uncontrolled pours.
The tunnelling elimination sequence — run left to right, stop at the first step that closes the tunnel STEP 1 BURN HISTORY ₹0 ask, don't buy STEP 2 FIRST BURN TEST ₹0 one jar, 4 hours STEP 3 WICK C1 vs C2 ₹46.02 6 test wicks STEP 4 FORMULA load · dye ₹0 stock you own STEP 5 JAR narrower vessel ₹159.30 pack of 5 votives STEP 6 WAX last, not first ₹260.00 500g CSI 464 COST OF THE TEST, AND DISRUPTION TO EVERY RESULT YOU ALREADY HAVE, INCREASES LEFT TO RIGHT ₹0 → ₹0 → ₹46.02 → ₹0 → ₹159.30 → ₹260.00 · FULL SEQUENCE ₹465.32 · MOST TUNNELLING STOPS AT STEP 1 OR 2
The elimination sequence, cheapest first. Step 6 is the one most makers start with, and it is the worst possible opening move: a new wax resets the pool temperature, the melt point and the wick behaviour, so every wick result you gathered before the swap is void. Costs are CSI live pricing, September 2026 — six Eco Candle Wick test pieces, one pack of five Clear Glass Votive Jars, and 500g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464.
Straight answer
Is my tunnelling caused by the wax, the wick, the jar or the formula?
You cannot answer that by looking at the candle. You answer it by eliminating suspects in order of what the test costs you. Start with what is free. Ask how the candle was burned, because a first burn cut short before the pool reached the glass sets a memory ring the candle follows forever — that mechanism is covered in why is my candle tunnelling. Then burn one jar yourself for four uninterrupted hours and time the pool, using the method in how long a candle should take to reach a full melt pool. If the pool still stops short, the wick is the next suspect and the cheapest one to test at ₹5.90 to ₹9.44 per test wick. After that, check the formula — fragrance load against the wax's stated ceiling, and dye quantity. Then the jar, because diameter and glass thickness set how much heat the flame has to supply. Change the wax last: it is the most expensive move and it voids every wick result you have. Full repair method for candles already tunnelled is in how to fix candle tunnelling.
One line: four suspects — wax, wick, jar, formula — eliminated in cheapest-first order, one variable per batch, with the wax tested last because changing it invalidates everything you learned before.
Step three is the first step that costs anything, and it is not much. Eco Candle Wicks from ₹59 for 10 in Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each, or Thick (C2) from ₹188.80 for 20 at ₹9.44 each. Six test wicks — three of each — cost ₹46.02.

Test in the cheapest order, not the most suspicious order

Almost every maker who writes to us about tunnelling has already bought a different wax. It is the last thing they should have touched and the first thing they touched.

There is a reason for that, and it is not stupidity. Wax is the thing you can see: the largest ingredient by weight, with a brand name on the bag. Switching it feels like decisive action. It is also the most expensive suspect to test and the one whose replacement destroys the evidence you already hold — a new wax has a different melt point, a different pool temperature and a different relationship with the same wick, so every burn result from before the change is void. You have not advanced the investigation. You have restarted it, at a cost.

A diagnostic sequence has to be ordered by what each test costs, not by how guilty each suspect looks. You check the fuse before you replace the motor. In candle making the cost gradient is unusually steep: the first two steps cost nothing at all, the third costs ₹46.02, and the last costs ₹260.00 plus a fortnight of curing before you are allowed an opinion about it.

Why the wax swap feels like it worked, and usually did not. A maker changes wax, re-wicks because the new wax needs a re-wick, pours a fresh batch, waits three weeks, burns it properly with full attention because it is a test candle, and the tunnel is gone. Four variables moved. The wax gets the credit. The actual fix was very often the re-wick, or the proper first burn, both of which came along for the ride. The next time they run out of that wax and it is back-ordered, the problem returns and they have no idea why.

Run it in the order below and stop at the first step that closes the tunnel. If a controlled first burn fixes it, the wick is innocent and you never buy a test wick at all. That is the whole point of ordering by cost.

1
Burn history — ₹0, one questionEstablish how the candle was actually burned. Did the first burn run until the pool reached the glass all the way round? How long was each burn after that? Was the wick trimmed to 5 mm? Was it near a fan, a draught or a window? If you are diagnosing a customer complaint you have to ask; if it is your own test candle you already know, and the answer is frequently uncomfortable. A candle burned for forty minutes at a time will tunnel regardless of how well it was made. Detail is in why is my candle tunnelling.
2
Controlled first burn — ₹0, one eveningTake one candle from the suspect batch. Trim the wick to 5 mm. Light it in a closed room with no fan, no air-conditioning and no open window. Check every thirty minutes and record when — or whether — the pool reaches the wall all the way round. Give it four hours. This single measurement separates "the candle is fine and the burn was wrong" from "the candle cannot open its pool", and those two conclusions lead to entirely different work. The benchmark is in how long a candle should take to reach a full melt pool.
3
Wick — ₹46.02 for six test wicksIf a proper four-hour burn still leaves a ring of solid wax at the wall, the flame is not producing enough heat for the diameter. The wick is the cheapest heat dial you own. Pour three identical jars with Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 and three with Thick (C2) at ₹9.44, cure them identically, and burn them side by side. Method by jar diameter is in the wick guide by diameter.
4
Formula — ₹0 marginal, uses stock you already holdFragrance oil and dye both change how the wax burns. Pour a control at the same weight, jar and wick with no dye and fragrance at the bottom of your range — or no fragrance at all for the cleanest signal. You are not selling this candle, so it costs only wax you were buying anyway. If the plain candle opens its pool and the loaded one does not, the formula is your culprit, and the fix is a load or dye adjustment rather than a new supplier.
5
Jar — ₹159.30 for a pack of five test vesselsDiameter, wall thickness and shoulder shape decide how much heat has to travel how far, and thick glass pulls heat out of the pool faster than thin. Pour the same wax, wick and formula into a narrower vessel — Clear Glass Votive Jars 70g at ₹159.30 for five, ₹31.86 each, are the cheapest honest test vessel in the range. If the tunnel disappears in the narrow jar with everything else held constant, the jar was the problem.
6
Wax — ₹260.00 for 500g, and only nowYou reach this step having cleared four suspects, so a wax change is now a real experiment rather than a shot in the dark. Buy the smallest pack — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹260 for 500g or Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹325 for 500g — and expect to re-test the wick afterwards, because you have just changed the pool. Do not buy the 10kg bag to run a diagnostic.
Soy tunnels differently, and it is not always a fault
Soy is a soft, low-melting wax that behaves differently from paraffin in a wide vessel, which is why the soy pattern gets its own page: why is my soy candle tunnelling. Run the same six steps, but weight suspicion toward jar and wick rather than wax. If the pool opens but never quite reaches the glass, the separate diagnosis is in why isn't my candle creating a full melt pool.

The four suspects, one by one

Wax, wick, jar and formula. Each has a signature — evidence that implicates it, evidence that clears it, and a test that settles the question. They appear here in test order, cheapest first, which is not the order in the title. Prices are CSI live pricing, September 2026; the linked product page is always authoritative.

Suspect · test third · cheapest paid test
The wick
What implicates it: a small, timid flame; a pool that stops at the same distance from the wall on every side; identical behaviour in two different jars of the same diameter. What clears it: a pool that reaches the wall on one side only — that is centring or draught, not wick size — or a flame that soots and mushrooms, which is an oversized wick and a different fault. The test: three jars on C1, three on C2, everything else identical, burned side by side for four hours. Eco Candle Wicks ship in both sizes at every pack quantity, so the six-wick diagnostic costs ₹46.02.

The formula — fragrance load and dye
What implicates it: onset that coincides with a load increase or a heavily dyed colour; oily beading on the surface; a flame that drowns or sputters low; densely pigmented wax, black and deep red especially. What clears it: an undyed, low-load control candle that tunnels the same way. The test: a control pour — same weight, jar and wick, no dye, fragrance at the bottom of your range. Fragrance ceilings are wax-manufacturer formulation limits, not regulatory limits: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%. Over the ceiling you leave unbound oil in the pool, and unbound oil is fuel the wick was never sized for.

The jar
What implicates it: the same wax, wick and formula burn correctly in a different vessel; a wide, heavy-walled jar or an inward shoulder; a clean concentric ring rather than a lopsided one. What clears it: tunnelling that persists in a narrow votive with everything else identical. The test: pour into a much narrower vessel. A 70 gram Clear Glass Votive Jar at ₹31.86 each shrinks the diameter without changing anything else. If the wide jar really is the problem, your options are a bigger wick, two wicks or a different jar — work out which is cheaper before you commit a season's packaging.

Suspect · test last · most disruptive
The wax
What implicates it: a real batch change — new supplier, new grade, or a switch between chunk, flake and pellet form — coinciding exactly with the onset; or a wax used outside its application, such as a pillar wax poured into a container. What clears it: tunnelling that predates the wax you are currently using. The test: 500g of a different container wax, same weight, same jar, with a fresh wick test afterwards because the pool has changed. How to check a wax before committing to volume is in how to verify wax quality before you buy.

The one-variable rule, and the record sheet that makes it work

One sentence: change one thing per test batch, cure it fully, burn it under identical conditions, and write down what happened. Almost nobody does it, because it is slow and a tunnelling candle feels like an emergency. It is not. It is a measurement problem, and measurement problems are solved by holding things still.

Cure matters more than makers expect. A candle burned at 48 hours is not the candle you sell; the crystal structure has not settled and the pool behaves differently. Give every test batch the full 14 days. That means a six-step elimination has a realistic calendar of six to eight weeks — another reason to start with the two free steps, which need no cure at all.

Identical conditions means identical
Same room. Same time of day if the room's temperature swings. No fan, no air-conditioning, no open window. Wick trimmed to 5 mm before lighting. Same starting wax temperature — a candle stored in a 34°C room and one stored in a 22°C room will not open their pools at the same rate. A pen thermometer at ₹354 covers both the pour and the ambient reading, and a weighing scale at ₹354 is what makes "same weight" true rather than approximate.
The tunnelling test record sheet
Twelve fields per test batch. Fill them in at the bench, not from memory
Field What to record Why it matters
Batch ID and date A code you can write on the jar base, plus the pour date Without it, three batches into the sequence you cannot tell the jars apart
The one variable State in writing the single thing that changed from the previous batch If you cannot write one thing here, the batch is not a test
Wax and pack Product, pack size, invoice date Lets you trace a change in behaviour to a specific purchase
Fill weight Grams of wax, weighed not estimated Fill depth changes how heat is retained in the vessel
Fragrance and load Oil, grams, and the percentage — write both Against the wax's stated ceiling: 13% for Chunks, 10% for CSI 464
Dye Colour, form and quantity, or "none" Heavy pigment loads are a real and frequently missed suspect
Jar Product and internal diameter in mm Diameter is the distance the heat has to travel — the core variable
Wick Type and size, e.g. Eco C1 or C2, and whether centred The most common uncontrolled variable between batches
Pour and ambient temperature Both readings, in °C, at the moment of pouring An August pour and a January pour set differently
Cure days Pour date to burn-test date A "fail" at day three is not a fail, it is an early look
Time to full pool Minutes to reach the wall all the way round, or "did not reach" The actual measurement the whole procedure exists to produce
Residue at wall Depth of unmelted wax in mm after four hours Turns "still tunnelling a bit" into a number you can compare

When two suspects are implicated at once

This happens often, and it is where most investigations collapse. A wide jar and a thin wick both point at themselves: the pool stalls at a consistent radius, which fits the wick, and the vessel is 80 mm across, which fits the jar. The instinct is to fix both, because you want the problem gone.

Changing both teaches you nothing, and here is what that costs. Move from C1 to C2 and from an 80 mm jar to a 55 mm votive in the same batch, and the tunnel closes. You now have a working 55 mm candle and no idea whether C2 alone would have fixed the 80 mm jar you actually sell in. The wide-jar line is unresolved, ₹159.30 went on votives you may not need, and next month you start again from zero. Two changes give you a candle; one change gives you knowledge.

The correct move is to test the cheaper suspect alone first, holding the other at its current value. Wick before jar, formula before jar, jar before wax. If the cheap change alone closes the tunnel, the expensive suspect is cleared without your spending anything on it. If it does not, you have narrowed the field by one at a cost of ₹46.02 and a fortnight.

There is a subtler case: two suspects that genuinely interact. A marginally undersized wick in a marginally too-wide jar fails on both counts and passes on neither alone. You recognise it because each single-variable test gives a partial improvement — the residue ring drops from 8 mm to 4 mm with the bigger wick and from 8 mm to 3 mm with the narrower jar, but neither reaches zero. That is the one case where combining two changes is correct, and you only know it because you ran them separately first and recorded the numbers.

The CSI principle
Order your tests by what they cost, not by what you suspect. Suspicion is free and usually wrong; cost is arithmetic and always right.
The maker who checks the burn history first spends nothing and is right roughly as often as the maker who buys a new wax and is right by accident. One of them can repeat the result next season. The other has to buy the same wax forever and hope.
Diagnosing before a festive run? Working back from Diwali on 8 November 2026, a six-week elimination needs to have started already. Short of calendar? Send the jar diameter, the wax and a photo of the burn and we will tell you which suspect to test first, so you can skip the ones that do not apply.

What the whole sequence actually costs

The argument against our own interest is the honest one: the first two steps cost nothing, and a large share of tunnelling is resolved by them. If your customer was burning a 200g candle for forty minutes at a time, no wick, jar, dye or wax we sell will fix that. Ask the question. Burn one candle properly. Only then open your wallet.

If you do go further, the full sequence is cheap — worth stating plainly, because "I'll just change the wax" is usually defended as the pragmatic shortcut. It is the costly one.

Total cost of running every step · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Six steps, run to the end, with nothing skipped
Step What you buy Cost Running total
1 · Burn history Nothing ₹0 ₹0
2 · Controlled first burn Nothing — one candle from the batch you already made ₹0 ₹0
3 · Wick 3 × Eco C1 at ₹5.90 and 3 × Eco C2 at ₹9.44 ₹46.02 ₹46.02
4 · Formula Nothing — a control pour from stock you hold ₹0 ₹46.02
5 · Jar Clear Glass Votive Jar 70g, pack of 5 ₹159.30 ₹205.32
6 · Wax Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 500 g ₹260.00 ₹465.32

₹465.32 to eliminate every suspect on the list, and you almost certainly will not spend all of it, because you stop at the first step that closes the tunnel. Compare that with the usual approach: a 10kg bag of a new wax at ₹5,999 bought on suspicion, which is roughly thirteen times the cost of the complete diagnostic and answers exactly one question — badly, because the wick was never controlled.

Do not buy the 10kg bag to run a test. We sell 10kg bags and would rather you did not buy one for a diagnostic. Buy 500g. If the wax turns out innocent — and it usually is — you have spent ₹260 instead of ₹5,999, and the 500g still pours into saleable candles. Buy the volume once the sequence is finished and the recipe is settled, because then the per-kilogram saving is real: CSI 464 drops from ₹520/kg at 500g to ₹507.40/kg at 10kg.

Two costs get forgotten. Wax burned in test candles: a 180g pour of CSI 464 at ₹507.40 per kilogram is ₹91.33 of wax, and a six-jar wick test consumes six of those. And time — fourteen days of cure per batch means the calendar, not the budget, limits how many suspects you clear before a deadline. Which is the strongest argument for the cost-ordered sequence: the free steps are also the fast ones.

Two things worth owning before you start, if you do not already: a Wick Centering Device at ₹118 for five (₹23.60 each) removes off-centre wicks as a confounding variable entirely, and a Candle Care Stickers Roll at ₹413 per 500 (₹0.83 each) puts the first-burn instruction on the jar, which prevents the most common cause of customer-reported tunnelling before it happens. Neither is part of the diagnostic; both reduce how often you need to run it.
Nobody diagnosed a tunnel by buying a bag of wax. They diagnosed it by burning one candle properly and writing down what happened.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The commercially convenient version of this page would put the wax first and the free steps last, because wax is the highest-value line on the invoice. We have put it last, and we have told you the first two steps cost nothing, because a maker who spends ₹5,999 solving a problem that a four-hour burn test would have identified does not come back.

Every price on this page is taken from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing and specification always take precedence. Fragrance load figures — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 10% for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — are the wax manufacturers' stated formulation limits, not regulatory limits, and they are not interchangeable between waxes. The elimination logic, the one-variable rule and the record sheet apply to any supplier's materials.

Send the jar's internal diameter in millimetres, the wax, the fill weight and the current wick, and we can usually narrow the suspect list before you pour anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is candle tunnelling caused by the wax or the wick?
Far more often the wick, and more often still neither — the burn itself. Test in cost order: burn history and a four-hour first burn cost ₹0, a six-wick comparison ₹46.02, a 500g wax test ₹260.00. Change the wax only once the others are cleared, because a new wax alters the pool temperature and voids every wick result you hold. The mechanism by suspect is in why is my candle tunnelling.
How do I test whether the jar is causing the tunnelling?
Pour the identical recipe — same wax, fill weight, wick, fragrance and dye — into a much narrower vessel and burn both side by side after a full 14-day cure. A 70 gram Clear Glass Votive Jar at ₹31.86 each, ₹159.30 for five, is the cheapest way to shrink the diameter alone. If the narrow jar burns to the wall and the wide one does not, the jar is implicated. If both tunnel, it is cleared.
Can too much fragrance oil or dye cause tunnelling?
Both can. Fragrance above the wax's stated ceiling leaves unbound oil in the pool that the wick was not sized to burn, and heavy pigment loads — black and dark reds especially — change how the wax melts. The ceilings are wax-manufacturer formulation limits: up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464. The confirming test is free: a control pour at the same weight, jar and wick, no dye, fragrance at the bottom of range. If it tunnels too, the formula is innocent.
Why shouldn't I just change two things at once to fix it faster?
Because you end up with a working candle and no knowledge. Change the wick and the jar together and the tunnel closes, but you cannot tell which did it, so the size you actually sell in is still unresolved. Change one variable per batch, cure 14 days, burn under identical conditions, record the result. The only exception is two suspects that each give a partial improvement alone — and you only know that by testing them separately first.
How much does it cost to diagnose tunnelling properly?
₹465.32 to run every step to the end, at CSI live pricing in September 2026: ₹0 for burn history, ₹0 for the controlled first burn, ₹46.02 for six Eco Candle Wick test pieces, ₹0 for the formula control pour, ₹159.30 for five votive test jars, and ₹260.00 for 500g of CSI 464. Most makers never reach the end, because the sequence stops at the first step that closes the tunnel — and the first two steps are free.
Do I have to wait 14 days before burning a test candle?
Yes, if the result is to mean anything. A soy container candle burned at 48 hours has not settled and does not behave like the one you sell, so a "fail" at day three is an early look, not a fail. Fourteen days is the working minimum for every test batch here — which is the strongest reason to run the two free steps first: they need no cure and can resolve the case the same evening.
Four suspects. One order. Stop at the first one that fits.
The complete tunnelling elimination costs ₹465.32 — and the first two steps cost nothing at all.
Eco Candle Wicks from ₹59 for 10 in Thin (C1) and Thick (C2), Clear Glass Votive Jars from ₹159.30 for 5, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 from ₹260 per 500g with a stated 10% ceiling, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks from ₹299 per 500g at 13%, and 92 fragrance oils in stock. About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. This page is the hub for the tunnelling troubleshooting cluster; the linked sibling guides carry the detail for each suspect. Product recommendations reflect the CSI range, but the elimination order, the one-variable rule and the record sheet apply to any supplier's materials.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on their product pages. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me, and the wording is unedited. They are general reviews of the wicks and waxes named — Eco Candle Wicks, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Soy Pillar Wax — and not reviews of this troubleshooting procedure. Judge.me does not store reviewer locations, so no city is shown. Reviews are badged "Verified buyer" only where Judge.me recorded them as verified: Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy, Thenirvaofficial, Jaya Sawlani and Dipali Sable are verified; Ashwini is not badged.
