Do I Need Different Soy Wax Formulations for Summer and Winter in India or Should I Develop One Robust Year-Round Candle?
Share
If I must split, how? Take the smallest split: same wax at a seasonal load first, then seasonal process settings, and two different waxes only as a last resort.
How do I test for both seasons? A robustness grid: each formula through a summer heat profile and a winter cool-pour, cool-cure condition, plus blind throw — all in the same week.
What does the test cost? ₹7,457.00 for 24 candles across four formulas. See the priced kit.
Aim for one robust candle; split by season only if nothing passes both
It is a reasonable question in a country where the same candle may be poured in a cool December workshop and shipped through a hot May. Summer brings softening and sweating; the cooler months bring frosting, wet spots and slower cold throw. It is tempting to answer each season with its own formula. Sometimes that is right. Most of the time it is the expensive answer, because every extra formula doubles the work that made the first one reliable.
So the default is one robust year-round formula: a wax, load, wick and process that pass both a summer stress and a winter stress, with throw inside your tolerance. You find it with a robustness grid — every candidate formula tested under both stresses at once. Only if no candidate passes both do you split, and then you take the smallest split: the same wax at a seasonal load before a seasonal process change, and either of those before two different waxes. The worked example shows how to test it, and what each option costs over a year.
CSI publishes no heat-survival data for any of its waxes. Every temperature on this page is either your own logged reading or a clearly labelled example test condition that you replace with your measured route. CSI also publishes no frosting, adhesion or cold-throw data. CSI's product page for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states fragrance load up to 10% and a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage; Premium Coconut Soy Wax publishes no ceiling, melt point or shelf life (its page describes a soy and virgin coconut oil blend). The grid, not either page, decides which formula is robust.
What a second formula really costs you
Before testing anything, list what two formulas would mean in your workshop. The materials difference is the visible part; most of the cost is in the work and the risk.
| Item | One robust formula | Two seasonal formulas | Your estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wick qualification | Once per jar and oil | Twice — each wax or load needs its own burn check | ___ |
| Seasonal gates (5436) | One formula through each gate | Both formulas through each gate | ___ |
| Stock | One wax, one batch sheet | Two waxes or two loads; part bags at changeover | ___ |
| Changeover | None | A date, a cut-over batch, labels and training | ___ |
| Retained samples and records | One line per lot | Two lines; easy to mix | ___ |
| Customer experience | Same scent strength and look all year | May differ between a December and a May purchase | ___ |
| Complaint diagnosis | One formula to investigate | First question: which formula did they get? | ___ |
The last two rows matter more than they look. A repeat customer who loved the December candle and finds the May one lighter or different in colour does not know you changed the formula for their benefit; they think the candle got worse. And when a complaint arrives, a two-formula business must first work out which version the customer has. Whether summer should decide the wax at all frames the year as a gate plus a score; this page asks whether one formula can pass every gate.
The robustness grid: every candidate under both stresses
The example uses Cinnamon Vanilla Fragrance Oil in a 200 g White Matte Glass Jar with an Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 wick. Four formulas, 6 candles each: CSI 464 at 8% (inside its 10% ceiling) and 7%, and Premium Coconut Soy Wax at 8% and 7% (no ceiling published — labelled test levels; check the product page or ask CSI on WhatsApp). Premium Coconut Soy Wax is in the grid as the kind of creamy coconut-soy blend makers often prefer in the cooler months; CSI publishes nothing that says it behaves better or worse in either season.
| Formula | Per 200 g candle | Summer stress (2) | Winter stress (2) | Reference (2) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F1 · CSI 464 8% | 184 g wax + 16 g oil | Heat profile | Cool pour + cool cure | Throw · full burn |
| F2 · CSI 464 7% | 186 g wax + 14 g oil | Heat profile | Cool pour + cool cure | Throw · full burn |
| F3 · Premium Coconut Soy 8% | 184 g wax + 16 g oil | Heat profile | Cool pour + cool cure | Throw · full burn |
| F4 · Premium Coconut Soy 7% | 186 g wax + 14 g oil | Heat profile | Cool pour + cool cure | Throw · full burn |
| Formula | Summer: sweat / slump / wick | Winter: wet spots / frosting / tops | Winter: pool in cool room | Hot throw (blind) | Robust? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F1 · CSI 464 8% | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| F2 · CSI 464 7% | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |

| F4 · Premium Coconut Soy 7% | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
"Robust" means: passes every summer line, passes every winter line, and throws within the tolerance you wrote before testing. If one formula is robust, you are finished — that is your year-round candle. If two are, choose on cost and look. If none is, read the pattern: a formula that passes summer at 7% and winter at 8% is pointing at a seasonal load, not two waxes. Throw winner versus heat winner handles the case where the grid splits on throw.
The priced robustness kit
Grams follow CSI's convention (oil = candle weight × load): 16 g oil + 184 g wax at 8%, 14 g + 186 g at 7%. 6 candles per formula with a 5% pour-loss allowance (a working assumption), rounded to listed in-stock packs. Wax: CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; oil: CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026; wicks and jars: verified 10 September 2026.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (F1, F2) | 2,331.0 g | 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹1,274.80 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax (F3, F4) | 2,331.0 g | 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹2,300.00 |
| Cinnamon Vanilla Fragrance Oil | 378.0 g | 4 × 100 g | ₹1,935.20 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 24 + 2 spare | 1 × 20 + 1 × 10 | ₹177.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 24 jars | 5 packs of 5 | ₹1,770.00 |
| Kit total | ₹7,457.00 |
Premium Coconut Soy Wax is listed only in 500 g and 1 kg bags at ₹920.00 a kilo, so it has no bulk step at all. CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo flat from 1 kg to 10 kg. Those two facts matter more for the seasonal decision than for the test, as the next section shows.
| Pack | Price | Per kg | Candles at 184.0 g wax |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹260.00 | ₹520.00 | 2.72 |
| 1 kg | ₹507.40 | ₹507.40 | 5.43 |
| 5 kg | ₹2,537.00 | ₹507.40 | 27.17 |
| 10 kg | ₹5,074.00 | ₹507.40 | 54.35 |
| Pack | Price | Per kg | Candles at 184.0 g wax |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹460.00 | ₹920.00 | 2.72 |
| 1 kg | ₹920.00 | ₹920.00 | 5.43 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 16.0 g oil |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹106.20 | ₹7.08 | 0.94 |
| 50 g | ₹271.40 | ₹5.43 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹483.80 | ₹4.84 | 6.25 |

| 1 kg | ₹4,554.80 | ₹4.55 | 62.50 |
A year in rupees: one formula, seasonal load, or two waxes
Material cost per 200 g candle (CSI 464 at the 5 kg rate, Premium Coconut Soy Wax at its 1 kg rate — its largest listed pack — Cinnamon Vanilla at the 500 g rate of ₹4.60 a gram, ₹5.90 wick, ₹70.80 jar; excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST): F1 ₹243.69, F2 ₹235.50, F3 ₹319.61, F4 ₹312.25. Now apply them to an example year of 3,000 candles with 1,250 made on a winter formula (October to February, an example split) and 1,750 on a summer formula.
| Strategy | Formulas | Materials for the year | Extra overheads (examples) |
|---|---|---|---|
| One robust formula (if F1 passes both) | F1 all year | ₹7,31,070.00 | None |
| One robust formula (if only F2 passes both) | F2 all year | ₹7,06,500.00 | None |
| Same wax, seasonal load | F1 for 1,250, F2 for 1,750 | ₹7,16,737.50 | Second batch sheet; changeover date |
| Two waxes | F3 for 1,250, F1 for 1,750 | ₹8,25,970.00 | Second qualification ~₹3,728.50 a year; about ₹2,760.00 held in part bags at changeover |
The spread is wide. On these example numbers, the two-wax strategy costs ₹94,900.00 more in materials than running F1 all year, before its overheads, because Premium Coconut Soy Wax is ₹412.60 a kilo dearer than CSI 464 and has no bulk break. The seasonal-load strategy is the opposite: it saves ₹14,332.50 against F1 all year, because the summer candles carry 2 g less oil. That is why the ladder puts seasonal load above two waxes — and also why, if F2 passes both seasons on its own, the cheapest robust candle of all is F2 all year at ₹7,06,500.00. Comparing total formulation cost and cost at each wax's optimal load carry this further.
The decision rule
| Grid result | Decision | What you buy |
|---|---|---|
| One or more formulas robust | One formula all year — the cheapest robust one with acceptable throw | 5 kg bag of that wax for a pilot |
| Same wax passes summer at 7% and winter at 8%, nothing passes both | Same wax, seasonal load | One wax; two batch sheets with a fixed changeover date |
| Formula passes both only with different pour or cure settings | Seasonal process, one formula | Nothing new; seasonal pour-room rules |
| Different waxes needed for each season | Two waxes — only after pricing the overheads | Both waxes, each fully qualified; WhatsApp for planning |
| Nothing passes summer at any load | Summer handling first | Packaging and dispatch timing (5434) before formulas |
If you do end up with two formulas, protect yourself with three rules: a fixed changeover date written in the batch book (not "when it gets warm"), labels or batch codes that tell you which formula a customer has, and both formulas through every seasonal gate. Seasonal qualification gates sets the dates, and the full qualification protocol makes both formulas pass warehouse, courier and customer stages.
Keeping one formula robust
Once you have a year-round formula, protect it. Put it through each seasonal gate with a retained control. Re-run the relevant column of the grid whenever you change wax bag supplier, oil, jar or wick. And watch the two places a single formula usually starts to drift: summer load creep ("just a little stronger for the festive range") and winter pour-room discipline (a colder workshop than the one you tested in). Keep 200–300 g of each wax bag and one candle from each approved batch; CSI publishes no lot numbers or lot-to-lot data, so retained samples are your only comparison.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A two-wax strategy would sell more of our dearer wax; we still put it last on the ladder. CSI publishes no frosting, heat-survival or cold-throw data, so the robustness grid in your own workshop is the evidence, not our product pages.
Soy-wax prices are CSI live pricing re-checked on 1 October 2026; Cinnamon Vanilla is CSI live pricing pulled 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Candle splits, pack rounding, per-candle costs and annual strategy costs are arithmetic shown to two decimals.
The summer and winter stress conditions, the loads, six candles per formula, the 14-day checkpoint, the annual volume, the October–February split and the overhead figures are labelled examples and working practices, not CSI measurements.
