Quick answers — read this first
Does room temperature affect wet spots? Yes, in two separate ways. At the pour, a cold room means a cold jar, and wax that chills at the glass wall sets before it has conformed to it. After the pour, a room that swings warm and cool expands and contracts the wax against fixed glass until the bond lets go.

What is the useful pour range? Aim for a room in the 25–30°C band and a jar at the same temperature as the room. Below about 20°C the failure rate climbs sharply; below 15°C it is close to guaranteed on clear glass.

Can spots appear a week later? Yes, and this is the one that catches people out. A candle that is flawless at 48 hours can show spots at day 7 because the storeroom cycled. Log day 7, not just day 2.

The curve is one ordinary storeroom over seven days — warm afternoons, cool nights, nothing dramatic. The bars beneath are the same batch of jars inspected each morning. Nothing happened at the pour; the pour was fine. What is happening is seven expansion-and-contraction cycles working the wax loose from glass that barely moves. Yes, and it is the single most under-recorded variable in Indian candle making — because it acts at two separate moments. At the pour, your jar is not at jar temperature, it is at room temperature. A 16°C workshop hands you 16°C glass, and wax entering at its stated 80–90°C band freezes against that wall before it has flowed into the surface it is supposed to bond with. That is the mechanism behind what causes wet spots in candle jars, and it is why preheating the jar works. After the pour, ambient decides whether the bond you achieved survives. Wax expands and contracts far more than glass does for the same temperature change, so every warm–cool cycle in your curing space prises the two apart a little further — which is how a candle that was flawless at 48 hours shows wax pulled away from the glass on day seven. Variable one — the room at the moment the wax goes in

You are not pouring hot wax into a jar. You are pouring hot wax into the room, which happens to be jar-shaped.

A glass jar has almost no thermal mass of its own and no insulation. Left on a shelf overnight it arrives at whatever the room has been at for the last few hours, and it stays there until something changes it. This is the fact the whole at-pour argument rests on: you do not control your jar temperature separately from your room temperature unless you deliberately intervene. If the workshop is at 16°C on a December morning in Jaipur or Ludhiana, every jar on the bench is at 16°C, including the ones that were at 31°C when you packed them away in October.

Now put a number on the gradient. Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance addition at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states melt and pour in that same 80–90°C band. Pour at 85°C into a jar sitting at 30°C and the wax at the glass sees a 55°C drop. Pour the identical wax at the identical temperature into a jar sitting at 16°C and it sees a 69°C drop — about a quarter steeper, delivered instantly, at the exact surface where adhesion has to happen. The wax in the middle of the jar does not care. The 0.2 mm of wax touching the glass cares enormously, because it is the only wax that has a bonding job to do.

What that steeper gradient does is take away time. Wax bonds to glass by staying liquid long enough to flow into the microscopic texture of the surface and then solidifying in place. Chill it fast and it forms crystals against the wall before it has flowed anywhere, so it sets sitting on the glass rather than into it. Then normal shrinkage during solidification pulls that poorly-attached skin inward, air fills the space it leaves, and you have a wet spot — a patch where light no longer passes cleanly from wax to glass. Three Indian pour situations that are actually the same situation. (1) The early-morning December pour. You start at 6.30 am to get the batch out before the day's orders. In Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow or Chandigarh that is frequently a 10–14°C room, and it is the coldest the room will be all day. Same wax, same jars, same recipe as October — and a batch full of spots. Fix: pour at 2 pm instead. It costs nothing and it is often the entire solution. (2) The tiled or stone bench. Kota stone, granite and vitrified tile are excellent heat sinks. A jar stood directly on one loses heat from its base faster than from its sides, and you get a ring of spots around the bottom third while the upper wall is clean. Fix: a folded towel, a sheet of corrugated cardboard or a wooden board under the jars. Free. (3) The air-conditioned room at 18°C. Makers run the AC because pouring is hot work, and then wonder why summer batches fail. An 18°C AC room is colder than a December morning in Chennai. Fix: switch the AC off thirty minutes before you pour, let the room and the jars come up, pour, and leave it off through cooling. Comfort for twenty minutes is not worth a rejected batch.

There is a second-order effect worth naming: draughts. A ceiling fan on speed 3, an air cooler, an open window with a breeze or an AC vent blowing across the bench does not just lower the average temperature, it cools unevenly. One side of a jar chills faster than the other, so the wax sets asymmetrically and the spots appear in a pattern — heavy on the side facing the airflow, clean on the sheltered side. If your spots are consistently on one face of the jar, stop looking at the wax and look at what is moving the air in that room.

A cold jar is not a cold room's only symptom
Jars that have been stored against an outside wall, on a low shelf, or in a stockroom that never gets sun can sit several degrees below the room you are actually standing in. Bring the day's jars out onto the bench an hour before you pour so they equalise with the working room rather than with the store. Variable two — the room for the fortnight afterwards

This is the one that catches people out, and it catches out experienced makers more often than beginners, because experienced makers have already fixed their pour. You warm the jars, you pour slowly at the right temperature, you cool on cardboard, and at 48 hours the batch is perfect. You photograph it. You quote it. Ten days later you open the carton to pack and a third of the jars have marks that were not there before. Nothing in your process changed. The candle did not fail at the pour. It failed in storage.

The mechanism is straightforward and it is purely physical. Wax and glass respond very differently to the same change in temperature: wax is a soft organic solid that expands appreciably when warmed and contracts appreciably when cooled, and glass is a rigid mineral that barely moves at all across the temperature range a room ever reaches. Bond the two together and then heat them, and the wax pushes outward against a wall that will not give. Cool them and the wax shrinks away from a wall that will not follow. Do that once and a good bond absorbs it. Do it fourteen times over a fortnight and the bond fails at its weakest points first, which is exactly what the diagram at the top of this page describes. Each cycle recruits a slightly larger patch of the wall, and the failures are cumulative and one-directional — wax does not re-bond to glass on its own once the contact is lost. What matters is not the average temperature of the storeroom. It is the swing. A storeroom that sits at a steady 33°C all week is far kinder to a candle than one that runs 34°C at 3 pm and 24°C at 5 am, even though the second one has the lower average. Ten degrees of daily movement is enough to cause visible loss of contact within a week on clear glass. Under an uninsulated concrete or tin roof, on a top floor, in a room with a west-facing window, the swing can be considerably larger than that. Most small Indian candle businesses cure in exactly such a room, because it is the spare room, and the spare room is spare precisely because nobody wants to sit in it.

Cure inside a closed cupboard, not on an open rackAn almirah, a steel storage cupboard or a cheap wooden wardrobe is a temperature buffer. The air inside it changes slowly because it is not connected to the room's airflow, so the daily swing your candles experience can be half what the room experiences. This is the single highest-return change on the list and it costs nothing if you already own a cupboard. Second best: lids on and the jars closed inside their shipping cartons, cartons taped shut.

Stay away from outside walls and windowsAn external wall that takes afternoon sun radiates heat into the room for hours after sunset and then gives it all up overnight. A shelf against that wall is the worst place in the building for curing candles. Keep at least 30 cm of clearance, or better, use the internal wall. The same goes for windows: even without direct sun on the jars, the glass is a thermal weak point and the air beside it moves more than the air in the middle of the room.

Do not cure next to an air conditionerAn AC does not hold a room at a temperature; it cycles. It runs, drops the room three or four degrees, cuts out, lets it drift back up, and runs again — and it does this all day and then stops entirely at night. Curing candles in front of an AC or under its outflow puts them through more cycles per day than an uncontrolled room does. If your storeroom has an AC, either run it continuously at a fixed setting or do not run it at all. Cycling is the enemy, not warmth.

Get the jars off the floor and off the top shelfHeat stratifies. The top shelf of a tall rack in an Indian storeroom in May can be several degrees hotter than the floor, and it also swings harder because it is closest to the roof. The floor, meanwhile, is the coldest surface in the room in December and is what your tiles are conducting into the base of the jar. Middle shelves, in the middle of the room, are the calmest place you have.

Treat transport as part of the cureA courier van parked in the sun reaches temperatures no storeroom does, and then the parcel cools overnight in a sorting hub. If your candle leaves you at day 4 of its cure, the last ten days of cycling happen somewhere you cannot control. Hold container candles the full cure before dispatch where the order allows, pack with the lid on, and accept that a candle shipped early is a candle whose finish you have handed to the highway.
How to tell an at-pour failure from an after-pour failure. Photograph every batch at 48 hours, straight on, against a plain background, in the same light. If the spots are in the 48-hour photograph, the problem is your pour: room temperature, jar temperature, pour temperature or pour speed. If the 48-hour photograph is clean and the day-7 photograph is not, the problem is your storage, and no change to your pouring routine will help. These two faults look identical in the finished jar and have completely different fixes, which is why makers spend months adjusting pour temperature to solve a storeroom problem. The photograph is the diagnostic. It takes four seconds and it costs nothing.
The CSI principle
The pour decides whether the bond forms. The next fortnight decides whether it survives. Most makers only measure the first one.
A perfect pour into a cold jar fails immediately and visibly, so it gets fixed. A perfect pour into a swinging storeroom fails slowly and invisibly, so it gets blamed on the wax supplier. The second one is far more common in India and far more expensive, because the candle has already been costed, photographed and often sold before the fault appears.

May, monsoon and December — the same recipe in three different rooms

A candle recipe is not a fixed thing. It is a set of instructions that assumes an environment, and in India that environment changes more across the year than in almost any market you will read advice from. When a maker in Nagpur follows a method written for a workshop in Manchester and gets a different result, neither party is wrong; the room is different. Here is what actually changes across the Indian year, and what to do about each.

The May pour is not usually a wet-spot problem at the pour. With the room at 38°C or higher across the north and centre, your jars are warm, the gradient is small and the wax sets slowly and evenly against the glass — adhesion is often at its best of the year. The trouble is what comes next. That same 38°C afternoon becomes 27°C at 4 am, and if the curing room is under a concrete roof the surface above your candles is radiating well past sunset. May is an after-pour season. You will also fight frosting, deep sink holes around the wick and soft tops, because slow cooling favours large crystals — the cooling-rate side of that is covered in does cooling temperature affect soy wax frosting. Adjust by pouring in the morning rather than the afternoon and by curing in the most thermally stable room in the building, not the most convenient one.

The monsoon pour, July through September, is the best adhesion window most Indian makers get. Ambient sits in the 26–32°C band, cloud cover flattens the day–night swing, and both the pour and the cure happen in conditions a container candle likes. Makers routinely blame the monsoon for wet spots anyway, because the season is humid and the fault is called a wet spot. That connection does not exist. The December pour is the classic. It is also the worst possible timing, because December is when a candle business is busiest and least able to absorb a rejected batch. Across the north the working room drops to 10–18°C, jars are cold to the touch, and a maker who poured cleanly all through October suddenly has a spotting rate of a third or more. Warm the room or the jars, pour at the warmest stable part of the day, insulate the cooling surface, and the batch behaves like October again. Controlling a room you cannot control

Almost nobody reading this has a climate-controlled production room, and you do not need one. What you need is to stop your candles experiencing the full range that your building experiences, and the five moves below do most of that for nothing. Pour at the warmest stable part of the day — in winter that is usually 1 pm to 4 pm, not first thing; in summer it is the reverse, first thing rather than the afternoon peak. Note the word stable: a room that is warm but rising fast is still a room whose jars are colder than its air. Insulate the cooling surface with cardboard, a folded towel or a wooden board so the jar bases are not conducting into stone or tile. Move the jars away from outside walls and windows, both while they cool and while they cure. Cure inside a closed cupboard or a taped carton, which halves the swing your candles feel. Do not cure next to an air conditioner, because an AC cycles and cycling is exactly what you are trying to eliminate.

Two things not to do. Do not put candles in a fridge or in front of a cooler to "set them faster" — that is the steepest gradient you can manufacture and it produces the exact fault you are trying to avoid, along with cracking. And do not chase the problem by covering jars with a warm cloth after pouring and then removing it after an hour; you have just created your first thermal cycle at the moment the bond is at its weakest. If you insulate the cooling batch, leave the insulation in place until the wax is fully at room temperature.

The honest cost picture matters here. Every effective fix on this page is free. A room thermometer helps you measure the problem and costs a couple of hundred rupees from a hardware shop — we do not stock one, and if we did we would still tell you it is optional. A softer, creamier blend that many makers move to for a smoother finish. If you were going to buy it anyway for the finish, buy it — but buy it for the finish, not as a wet-spot cure. A softer wax is more forgiving of a moderate thermal cycle, and that is a genuine marginal benefit. It is not a solution to a storeroom that swings ten degrees a day, and it will not rescue a 12°C December pour. Wax additives modify how the wax itself crystallises; they do not modify how far the glass expands, and glass expansion is half of the after-pour problem. The record that proves it

Everything above is an argument. This is how you turn it into evidence for your own room, and it is the only part of this page that asks anything of you. For two weeks, log the ambient temperature at every pour and the state of the batch at 48 hours and at day 7. Nothing else changes — same wax, same jars, same wick, same pour temperature. You are deliberately holding your recipe constant so that the room is the only variable moving, and because the Indian day–night swing does the varying for you, you will get a spread of conditions without engineering any.

The pattern appears faster than people expect. Most makers can see it inside eight to ten pours, because the relationship is strong and roughly monotonic: colder room at pour, more 48-hour spotting; bigger storeroom swing, more day-7 spotting. What the log really buys you is the ability to distinguish the two failures, which is impossible from a finished jar. A batch that is clean at 48 hours and spotted at day 7 is a storage entry, not a pour entry, and once you have five of those in a row you will stop adjusting your pour temperature and go and buy a cupboard door.

Grade it the same way every time
Use four grades and stick to them: clean (no visible mark), light (marks visible only at an angle in bright light), moderate (visible straight on at arm's length), heavy (visible across a room, or a continuous band). Photograph at the same distance, same angle and same light source every time — a phone on a fixed mark on the bench is enough. Consistency of grading matters more than precision of grading, because you are comparing your own batches with each other, not with anybody else's.

One caution about reading your own log. Wet spots are partly cosmetic and their commercial cost is not the same for every product. Does room temperature cause candle wet spots?
Yes, in two distinct ways. At the pour, room temperature sets your jar temperature, and a cold jar chills the wax at the glass wall before it can flow into the surface and bond. After the pour, the daily temperature swing in your curing space expands and contracts the wax against glass that barely moves, working the bond loose over days. The first shows up within 48 hours; the second shows up around day 7 and later. They look identical in the finished jar and have completely different fixes.
What room temperature should I pour candles at in India?
Aim for 25–30°C, with the jars equalised to that same temperature rather than brought in cold from a store. Between 20°C and 25°C is workable if you insulate the cooling surface and remove draughts. Below 20°C the failure rate on clear glass climbs sharply, and below 15°C you should not pour without warming the jars first. Above about 33°C wet spots become rare but frosting, sink holes and soft tops take their place, so summer is not a free pass either.
Can wet spots appear a week after the candle was poured?
Yes, and this is the failure mode most makers miss. A candle can be genuinely flawless at 48 hours and show marks at day 7 or day 10 because the storeroom cycled warm and cool every day in between. Each cycle expands and contracts the wax against fixed glass, and the loss of contact is cumulative — wax does not re-bond on its own. Photograph every batch at 48 hours and again at day 7; if the first photograph is clean and the second is not, the fault is in your storage, not your pouring.
Should I pour candles in an air-conditioned room?
No, not while pouring or cooling. An AC set to 18°C gives you a colder room than a December morning in Chennai, and an AC does not hold a steady temperature — it cycles on and off all day, which is precisely the thing that breaks the wax-to-glass bond during curing. Switch it off about thirty minutes before you pour, let the room and the jars come up, and leave it off until the wax is fully set. Never cure candles in the airflow of an AC.
Does monsoon humidity cause wet spots in candles?
No. Despite the name, the marks are pockets of air where the wax has lost contact with the glass, not trapped water — the mechanism is set out here. The monsoon is in fact the best adhesion window most Indian makers get, because ambient sits in the 26–32°C band and cloud cover flattens the day–night swing. If your monsoon batches are spotting, look at a storeroom fan, an AC or a window before you look at the humidity.
Will switching wax or adding an additive fix wet spots?
Not if the cause is your room.
