How Do I Calculate the True Commercial Cost of a Soy Wax Including Purchase Price, Shipping, Fragrance Requirement, Wick Requirement, Production Loss, Rework and Rejects?
Share
What does the calculator give for CSI 464? ₹289.83 per saleable 200 g candle with example inputs, against a naive wax-only ₹93.36.
Which lines matter most? Wax price, load and rejects, then labour and production loss. A 5-point reject rise adds ₹15.56 a candle.
Where do the measured lines come from? A side-by-side test and one pilot batch. ₹2,635.94 for the kit. See the test.
Nine lines, one number: true cost per saleable candle
The true commercial cost of a soy wax is not a price per kilo. It is what the wax costs you per candle you can actually sell, once everything the wax touches is included: what you paid to get it to your workbench, what you lose in production, the fragrance and wick it needs, the labour to pour it, the candles you rework or reject, the cash tied up while it cures, and the one-off cost of qualifying it. Put those in order and the calculation is nine short steps:
1. Landed ₹/kg = (price × kg + shipping) ÷ usable kg. 2. Divide by (1 − production loss). 3. Wax per candle = candle weight × (1 − load) × that rate. 4. Add fragrance (weight × load × oil ₹/g), wick and jar. 5. Add labour per candle. 6. Divide by (1 − reject rate). 7. Add rework per candle. 8. Add the cost of cash in curing stock. 9. Add the qualification cost spread over the candles it will make.
Worked for CSI 464 in a 200 g Apple Cinnamon candle at 8%, with labelled example figures for everything that is yours to supply, the answer is ₹289.83 per saleable candle. The naive figure most makers use — price per kilo × grams of wax — is ₹93.36. Against CSI 468 in the same candle, the naive wax gap is ₹23.85; the true gap, with equal example performance, is ₹25.44. The two only diverge further when your measured load, wick, loss or reject rate differs between the waxes — which is exactly what the test at the end of this page measures.
The copyable calculator
Copy this table into a spreadsheet or your batch book. Columns three and four are worked with CSI prices and labelled example inputs; columns five and six are yours. Every example figure — shipping (₹600.00 per 25 kg order), production loss, labour, rework, reject rate, cure days, cost of money — is a placeholder you replace. Shipping for CSI depends on your pincode and is shown at checkout; no figure is stated here. Loads must sit inside each wax's published ceiling: CSI 464 up to 10% and CSI 468 up to 13% per their product pages; Chunks up to 13%; Natural Soy Pearl has none published.
| Line | How | CSI 464 (example) | CSI 468 (example) | Your wax A | Your wax B | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| D | Unusable on arrival | Weigh deliveries (example) | 0% | 0% | ___% | ___% |
| E | Landed ₹/kg | (A × B + C) ÷ (B × (1 − D)) | ₹531.40 | ₹661.00 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| F | Production loss | Pour loss, residue, tests (example) | 4% | 4% | ___% | ___% |

| H | Fragrance load (measured) | Load each wax needs for your throw | 8% | 8% | ___% | ___% |
| I | Wax per candle | W × (1 − H) × G ÷ 1,000 | ₹101.85 | ₹126.69 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| J | Fragrance per candle | W × H × oil ₹/g ÷ (1 − F) | ₹79.06 | ₹79.06 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| K | Wick(s) per candle (measured) | Wicks × price | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| L | Jar per candle | Same jar both columns | ₹70.80 | ₹70.80 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| M | Labour per candle poured | Your timing × rate (example) | ₹25.00 | ₹25.00 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| N | Made cost per candle | I + J + K + L + M | ₹282.61 | ₹307.45 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| O | Reject rate (measured) | Pilot batch count (example) | 2% | 2% | ___% | ___% |
| P | Per good candle | N ÷ (1 − O) | ₹288.38 | ₹313.73 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| Q | Rework per candle | Share reworked × cost (example 3% × ₹7.50) | ₹0.22 | ₹0.22 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| R | Cash in curing stock per candle | Daily output × cure days × P × rate ÷ 12 ÷ monthly output | ₹1.01 | ₹1.10 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| S | Qualification per candle | Test-kit share ÷ candles over horizon | ₹0.22 | ₹0.22 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
| T | True cost per saleable candle | P + Q + R + S | ₹289.83 | ₹315.27 | ₹___ | ₹___ |
Three lines deserve a note. J divides fragrance by (1 − F) because the oil in lost wax is lost too. R is small at a 7-day cure — ₹1.01 a candle — but becomes real cash at scale; the cure-time post shows the one-off release a shorter cure gives. S spreads half the ₹2,635.94 side-by-side kit over an example 6,000 candles; for a single festive run it can be much larger per candle.
All four CSI soy waxes through the calculator
With identical example inputs for performance — 8% load, Eco Thin C1, 2% rejects — and the same example shipping on a 25 kg order, here are CSI's four soy waxes. The last column turns the true cost back into a per-kilo figure: the effective price of a kilo of wax that ends up in a saleable candle.
| Wax | Listed ₹/kg (5 kg) | Landed ₹/kg | Naive wax per candle | True cost per saleable candle | Effective ₹/kg of wax in a good candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹424.80 | ₹448.80 | ₹78.16 | ₹273.62 | ₹477.04 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹507.40 | ₹531.40 | ₹93.36 | ₹289.83 | ₹564.84 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹599.00 | ₹623.00 | ₹110.22 | ₹307.81 | ₹662.20 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | ₹637.00 | ₹661.00 | ₹117.21 | ₹315.27 | ₹702.59 |
Two things are visible. First, the ranking is unchanged from the price list — as it must be when performance is equal. Second, the effective per-kilo figure sits 10.3% to 12.3% above the listed price: that is shipping, production loss and rejects, and it applies whichever wax you buy (the cheaper wax carries a slightly larger percentage, because the same shipping is spread over a lower price). Lowest cost per kg vs lowest cost per saleable candle shows how much measured difference it takes before the ranking changes.
Which line moves the answer most
Starting from the CSI 464 example (₹289.83), here is what each change does to the true cost per saleable candle on its own. The ranking tells you where to spend your attention.
| Change | Effect per candle | Share of true cost |
|---|---|---|
| Wax price +₹100.00 / kg | ₹19.63 | 6.8% |
| Load 8% → 10% (if your test needs it) | ₹17.97 | 6.2% |
| Rejects 2% → 7% | ₹15.56 | 5.4% |
| Labour +₹10.00 a candle | ₹10.24 | 3.5% |
| Production loss 4% → 8% | ₹8.05 | 2.8% |
| Wick Eco Thin C1 → Cotton Braided | ₹6.25 | 2.2% |
| Shipping +₹500.00 per 25 kg order | ₹3.93 | 1.4% |
| Rework 3% → 10% of candles | ₹0.52 | 0.2% |
The wax price itself, the load and the reject rate are the big three; labour and production loss come next; the wick choice and an extra ₹500.00 of shipping are smaller but real; rework at a few rupees a candle barely moves it. That ordering is why the siblings in this cluster each take one line: a 5% defect rate and cosmetic rejects, fragrance requirement and different fragrance capacities, ₹20, ₹50 or ₹100 a kilo, landed cost, pour consistency and wick cost.
The side-by-side that fills the measured lines
Lines H (load), K (wick) and O (rejects) are the only ones that can legitimately differ between two waxes in your calculator, and only after a test. Pour 4 candles of each wax with Apple Cinnamon Fragrance Oil at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax), Eco Thin C1 wicks and White Matte jars; then pilot one real batch of the wax that passes to count rejects.
| Line | CSI 464 | CSI 468 | Feeds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Load for target throw | ___% | ___% | H |
| Wick that passes (pool, flame, soot, jar) | ___ | ___ | K |
| Flame / soot / jar heat vs approved candle | ___ | ___ | Safety gate — no worse |
| Cure days to acceptable throw | ___ | ___ | R |
| Reworks per 100 in pilot | ___ | ___ | Q |
| Rejects per 100 in pilot | ___ | ___ | O |

The decision rule
| Situation | Rule | What you buy |
|---|---|---|
| Before testing | Fill lines A–G, L–M; copy the same H, K, O into both columns | The ₹2,635.94 side-by-side kit |
| Both waxes pass safety, measured lines equal | Line T follows the price list | The cheaper: CSI 464, 25 kg as 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg (₹12,685.00) |
| Measured lines differ | Lower line T wins | Whichever wax the calculator favours |
| Either wax worse on a safety line | Excluded, whatever its cost | The other wax |
| Above listed packs | Re-run line A with a quote | Ask on WhatsApp; no volume discount figure is published |
For the worked example — CSI 464 against CSI 468 with equal example performance — the concrete purchase is CSI 464 for a 25 kg month as 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg (₹12,685.00), after the ₹2,635.94 side-by-side confirms it in your jar. Buy CSI 468 (2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg, ₹15,925.00) only if your measured lines — a lower load, fewer rejects, a cheaper wick or a shorter cure — bring its line T below CSI 464's. The true gap to beat in this example is ₹25.44 a candle.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. "True cost" pages are often written to make a dearer product look cheap. This calculator does the opposite unless your own measurements say otherwise: with equal performance, it ranks CSI's soy waxes exactly as the price list does, dearest last.
Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026 and re-checked on 1 October 2026 (unchanged). Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. CSI shipping depends on pincode and is shown at checkout — the shipping figure here is an example. Every line is plain arithmetic shown to two decimals.
Shipping (₹600.00 per 25 kg), production loss (4%), labour (₹25.00), rework (3% at ₹7.50), rejects (2%), cure (7 days), 1,000 candles a month, the 18% a year cost of money and the 6,000-candle qualification horizon are labelled examples.
