How Many Wicks and Jars Do I Need for 1,000 Candles?
Share
How many jars do I need for 1,000 candles? 1,030 at a 3% breakage-and-spoilage assumption — 103 packs of 10. In a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid at ₹94.40 each that is ₹97,232.00; in a 40 ml Mini Glass Jar at ₹21.24 each it is ₹22,420.00. The vessel is the largest and most variable line in the run.
What does the whole wick-and-vessel bill come to? For the build used throughout this page — 1,000 candles in a 150 g lidded glass jar, one C1 wick and one wick sticker each — ₹1,06,227.00, or ₹106.23 per candle. Wax and fragrance are separate lines in the same costing sheet and are not included here.
Why not just order exactly 1,000 of everything? Because a run never ends with a perfect count. Wicks get mis-stuck and pulled out, stickers peel and get thrown away, glass arrives with the occasional chip and one jar in a batch gets poured wrong. Allowances of 5%, 10% and 3% are the assumptions used here; replace them with your own counts after one production run.
Why none of the three counts is 1,000
Wax and fragrance are continuous — you weigh out what you need and the rest stays in the bag. Wicks, stickers and vessels are discrete: each one is either used or lost, and losses are not rounding errors, they are missing candles. A run that is four wicks short at the end is four candles short, and four candles short on a 1,000-piece gifting order is a phone call you do not want to make.
So every count on this page has two steps. First an allowance for what will not survive the process. Then a second uplift because you cannot buy 1,050 of something; you buy whole packs. Both steps are visible in the table below, and both are honest about what is assumption and what is a published price.
| Item | Candles | Allowance (assumption) | Needed | Packs ordered | Units bought |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wicks | 1,000 | 5% spares | 1,050 | One 1000-pack + one 50-pack | 1,050 |
| Wick stickers | 1,000 | 10% peel and waste | 1,100 | 28 sheets of 40 | 1,120 |
| Vessels | 1,000 | 3% breakage and spoilage | 1,030 | 103 packs of 10 | 1,030 |
| Care stickers (optional) | 1,000 | none — roll of 1,000 | 1,000 | One roll of 1,000 | 1,000 |
The allowances deserve a sentence each, because guessing them is how a run goes wrong in both directions. Wick losses are mostly handling: a sticker that lets go when the hot wax hits it, a wick pulled crooked and re-set, a wick trimmed short by someone learning. Sticker losses are higher in percentage terms and trivial in money — they peel, they stick to a thumb, they get used twice on the same jar. Vessel losses are the ones that hurt: a chipped rim, a hairline crack found after pouring, a jar knocked off a bench on a busy day. Three per cent on 1,000 vessels is 30 jars, which sounds generous until the day you find eleven of them in one carton.
Wicks: how many, which type, and what each choice costs across 1,000
Start with the count, because it is decided by the vessel rather than by the candle. One wick per candle is the norm for containers up to roughly 7–8 cm across, which covers most of CSI's 150 g jar range: the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid page gives a 150 g fill capacity and an 8 cm height, and the Black Glass Jar with Black Lid page gives an outer rim of about 7 cm. Wider vessels usually need two wicks — the Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made page describes them as engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm — and two wicks means 2,100 wicks for the run, not 1,050.
| Wick | Per unit | Packs for 1,050 | Cost for the run | Against C1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | ₹5.90 | One 1000-pack + one 50-pack | ₹6,195.00 | — |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2) | ₹9.44 | One 1000-pack + one 50-pack | ₹9,912.00 | +₹3,717.00 |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | ₹12.00 | One 1000-pack + one 50-pack | ₹12,600.00 | +₹6,405.00 |
| Performance Wooden Wicks | ₹41.30 | Ten 100-packs + one 50-pack | ₹43,660.00 | +₹37,465.00 |
| C1, double-wicked (2,100 wicks) | ₹5.90 | Two 1000-packs + one 100-pack | ₹12,390.00 | +₹6,195.00 |
Two things jump out. First, the cotton wicks barely differ in the context of a thousand candles: moving from C1 to C2 costs ₹3,717.00 across the whole run, which is less than five rupees a candle and should never be the reason you pick the wrong size. Second, wooden wicks are a product decision, not a wick decision. At ₹41.30 each they add ₹37,465.00 to the run — real money, justified only if the crackle and the look are part of what the customer is buying. The honest position: if you are not charging for the wooden wick, do not use it on a thousand candles.
Notice also what the pack ladder does and does not do. Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each in the Thin (C1) 10-pack and ₹5.90 each in the 1000-pack — the rate does not fall as the pack grows. Buying the 1000-pack saves you shipping and handling, not rupees per wick. Performance Wooden Wicks behave differently, stepping from ₹59.00 at 10 to ₹41.30 at 100. Check the ladder on the page rather than assuming a volume discount exists.
Stickers, holders and the things you buy per batch rather than per candle
Wick stickers are per candle. One 10 mm sticker holds one wick tab to the base of one jar, so 1,000 candles plus a 10% waste assumption is 1,100 stickers, which is 28 sheets of 40 at ₹100.00 a sheet: ₹2,800.00, or ₹2.50 a candle. Large Candle Wick Stickers at ₹6.23 each would make the same job ₹6,972.00; they are worth it for heavier tabs and wide bases, not for a standard 150 g jar.
Care and safety stickers are per candle too, and they are the cheapest branding you will buy. A Candle Care Stickers Roll of 1,000 at 1.5 inch is ₹699.00 — ₹0.70 a candle — and it puts trim-the-wick, burn-time and safety guidance on the base of every unit in a 1,000-piece order. For a gifting client who will hand the candles to people who have never burned a soy candle, that sticker does more work than most of the packaging.
Wick holders are per batch. This is where makers over-order. You do not need 1,000 centring devices; you need as many as the number of jars cooling at one time. If you pour 60 jars in a session, 60 holders is the requirement, and you will use the same 60 for every session of the run. Twelve packs of Wick Centering Device at ₹118.00 for five gives you 60 for ₹1,416.00; three packs of Steel Wick Holder at ₹1,250.00 for 25 gives you 75 for ₹3,750.00, and the page describes a three-hole layout that fits single, double or triple wicks in jars up to 9 cm wide. A reviewer of the Bamboo Wick Holder makes the practical case for the soft-touch version: Lalitha Jagan writes that it "doesn't exert any pressure on the wicks".
The rest of the bench is a one-off. A Wick Setting Tool at ₹399.00, a Wick Inserter at ₹59.00, a Candle Wick Cutter at ₹295.00 and a litre of Isopropyl Alcohol Spray at ₹520.00 for wiping jars before the pour come to ₹5,023.00 together with 75 steel holders. Spread across 1,000 candles that is about ₹5.02 a candle, and across the next thousand it is free. Treat it as equipment in your books, not as a material cost.
Before ordering any holder, centring device or pouring tool, write down how many jars you can realistically pour, wick and leave to set in one session. That number — 40, 60, 100 — is the quantity for every reusable item in the workshop. Ordering against the run instead of the batch is how a maker ends up with 1,000 centring devices at ₹118.00 for five and a cupboard that will not close.
Vessels: 1,030 of them, and a ₹87,790.00 spread
Here is the same count — 1,030 vessels for 1,000 candles — priced across seven CSI container families at their listed pack rates. Read it as a shape rather than a shopping list: these are different candles at different fill weights, so the row you choose also changes how much wax and fragrance the run needs. What the table settles is how much of your money the container decision is worth.
| Vessel | Stated capacity | Per unit | Packs for 1,030 | Cost for the run |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mini Glass Jars | 40 ml (page) | ₹21.24 | Ten 100-packs + one 50-pack | ₹22,420.00 |
| 200ml Salsa Glass Jar | 200 ml (page) | ₹29.50 | Ten 100-packs + one 50-pack | ₹30,975.00 |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | ~70 g wax fill (page) | ₹31.86 | 103 packs of 10 | ₹32,815.80 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 200 ml (page) | ₹70.80 | 103 packs of 10 | ₹72,924.00 |
| Tin Containers, 85 gram | tin format, pack of 12 | ₹70.80 | 86 packs of 12 | ₹73,065.60 |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid | 150 g fill (page) | ₹94.40 | 103 packs of 10 | ₹97,232.00 |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid | ~150 g fill (page) | ₹107.00 | 103 packs of 10 | ₹1,10,210.00 |
The spread between the cheapest and dearest rows is ₹87,790.00 on the same thousand candles. Nothing else in a 1,000-candle run — not the wax grade, not the fragrance, certainly not the wick — moves that much money. A maker who spends an afternoon comparing wax prices per kilo and picks the vessel from a photograph has optimised the wrong line, and the arithmetic says so plainly even though CSI would happily sell either.
That does not make the cheap row the right row. A 40 ml jar is a different product from a 150 g apothecary jar with a metal lid, and it will not carry the same price, the same shelf presence or the same gifting brief. What the table gives you is the size of the decision so you can make it deliberately: moving a thousand-candle festive range from the lidded glass jar to the 200 ml Salsa jar frees ₹66,257.00, which is either a better margin or a budget for better labels — and it is a different candle, so it has to be priced as one.
One practical detail that only matters at volume: pack granularity. Vessels sold in 10s round cleanly — 1,030 is 103 packs exactly. Vessels sold in 12s do not: 1,030 of the 85 gram tins means 86 packs and 1,032 units. It is two spare tins rather than a crisis, but the same effect on a 250-unit order with a 5-pack is worth checking before you assume your count is your order.
And one detail that only matters in a hot country: pour temperature against what the glass is rated for. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid page states it is hot-pour safe to 85°C. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page puts the pour at 75–80°C, comfortably inside that. If you are running a wax with a higher stated working range, check the vessel's own rating before a thousand jars are on the bench, and let the wax come down to temperature rather than chasing the pour.
Ordering 1,030 identical vessels: depth, substitutions and consistency
Fifty jars is a browsing decision. One thousand and thirty jars of one colour, one finish and one lid is a stock question, and it should be asked before the wax is ordered rather than after. The method is simple and takes ten minutes.
Counting on arrival is not paranoia, it is the only moment a shortfall is cheap to fix. One reviewer of the Tin Containers, Jinal Monil, notes "some are little dent" alongside praise for the material and the design — that is exactly the kind of thing a 3% allowance exists for, and exactly the kind of thing you want to discover on day one rather than on pour day. Another reviewer describes a missing part of an order being re-sent by the team; either way, the fix depends on you having counted.
One honest note on price feedback, because it is public. A reviewer of the Eco Candle Wicks, Monika Deep, writes that the quality is good for jar candles and that the team "can work on the pricing and delivery timelines", and another wick reviewer asks for quicker delivery. At a thousand candles both comments turn into planning instructions rather than complaints: order earlier than feels necessary, and consolidate wicks, stickers and vessels into one order so one delivery charge covers the run. Bulk pricing is quoted on WhatsApp rather than published, so ask before you assume the listed rate is the only rate.
Worked example: a Kochi brand counting a 1,000-piece wedding order
The order is 1,000 return-gift candles split 700 small and 300 larger. The small line is a Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram; the larger line is the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid. One scent, one wax, and a single wick family so the bench stays simple.
| Item | 700 votives | 300 lidded jars | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vessels needed at 3% | 721 → 73 packs of 10 = 730 | 309 → 31 packs of 10 = 310 | ₹52,521.80 |
| Wicks at 5% spares | 735 | 315 | ₹6,195.00 (one 1000-pack + one 50-pack covers both lines) |
| Wick stickers at 10% | 770 | 330 | ₹2,800.00 (28 sheets of 40) |
| Care stickers | 700 | 300 | ₹699.00 (one roll of 1,000) |
| Wick and vessel total | ₹62,215.80 |
Three things the example is doing on purpose. It buys one wick pack for both sizes only because a test burn showed the same C1 works in both vessels — if it had not, the order would split into 735 of one size and 315 of another at the same ₹5.90 per wick, with no cost penalty. It orders a single roll of 1,000 care stickers because the count is exactly right and there is no waste allowance needed on a roll. And it checks the votive and the lidded jar as two separate stock questions, because they are two separate variants that happen to be on one order.
The Kochi part matters too. Monsoon humidity is hard on cardboard and on adhesive: wick stickers that have sat in a damp cupboard hold less well, which is one more reason the 10% sticker allowance is not generous. Store stickers and wicks sealed and dry, keep the glass off the floor, and wipe every jar with isopropyl alcohol before pouring rather than after a jar has already been filled and found greasy.
What CSI cannot count for you
CSI sells wicks, stickers, holders and vessels. It does not sell cartons, dividers, bubble wrap, mailer boxes, courier services, labour or storage, and it does not publish rates for them — so the rows below are blank on purpose. Shipping glass is the single biggest of those costs for a candle brand, and it is also the one most often left out of a quotation until the first breakage claim.
| Line | Your figure | Where your number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Outer cartons and dividers for finished candles | _____ | Your packaging supplier's invoice ÷ candles it will pack. |
| Bubble wrap, void fill and tape | _____ | One roll or bale ÷ parcels it protects. |
| Printed labels and hang tags | _____ | Print run bill ÷ usable labels, rejects included. |
| Inbound delivery on the vessel order | _____ | The delivery charged on your supply order ÷ 1,000. |
| Outbound courier or transport to the client | _____ | Your courier's quote for the actual cartons and weight. |
| Breakage in transit to the customer | _____ | Your own record from last season, as a percentage of units shipped. |
| Labour: wicking, pouring, cleaning, packing | _____ | Hours across the run × your chosen rate ÷ 1,000. |
| Storage for 1,030 jars before and after pouring | _____ | A fair share of your rent for the weeks the stock sits there. |
| Your own costs, total | _____ | Add the rows, then add them to the material figures on this page. |
One line there deserves emphasis because it is specific to this post. The 3% vessel allowance on this page covers breakage before the candle is made — chips found on arrival, a jar dropped on the bench, a cracked base spotted at pour. It does not cover glass broken on its way to your customer, which is a separate and usually larger number, and only your own courier record can size it. Keep the two apart in your sheet; makers who merge them always underestimate the second one.
Everything CSI can price is on this page: ₹1,06,227.00 of wicks, stickers and 150 g lidded glass jars for 1,000 candles, or as little as ₹31,415.00 if the run goes into 40 ml Mini Glass Jars instead. Prices include taxes and GST invoicing is available. What the candles cost in wax and fragrance, and what the finished order should be quoted at, are separate questions with their own arithmetic.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and this page says several things that do not help a sales pitch. The wick — the component a supplier would most like to upgrade you on — is the smallest lever in the run: C1 to C2 across 1,000 candles is ₹3,717.00. The vessel is the whole argument, with a ₹87,790.00 spread between the cheapest and dearest CSI containers for the same count, and the cheaper container is often the right answer. Wooden wicks add ₹37,465.00 and are worth it only if the customer is paying for them. And wick sizing is settled by your own test burn, because CSI does not publish a per-wick diameter table.
Every price comes from live CSI stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Capacities, dimensions and the 85°C hot-pour rating are quoted as stated on the product pages. The 5% wick spares, 10% sticker waste and 3% vessel breakage allowances are stated assumptions offered as starting points, not measured data — replace them with your own counts after one run. Stock depth changes daily, so the method here is to check the quantity on the exact variant rather than to quote a figure. Costs CSI does not sell — cartons, dividers, wrap, labels, courier, labour and storage — are left blank on purpose.
