Quick answers — read this first
Why do my candles look good sometimes and rough other times? Because something is moving that you are not measuring. A finish is the output of about eleven inputs; if any drifts between jar one and jar fifty, the finish drifts too. Write all eleven down, then read why yesterday's batch looked different from today's.

Which numbers does CSI actually publish? Two. Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance addition at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring, and CSI 464 states melt and pour in the same 80–90°C band. Every other figure on your spec sheet — pour temperature, vessel temperature, room temperature, spacing, undisturbed time — is one you establish for your own bench and then hold.

How do I know if my process is stable? Sample five jars from every batch, score them against a written standard, and log the score. Two months of logs tells you what a hundred opinions cannot.

What should I buy first? A pen thermometer at ₹354 and a weighing scale at ₹354. Nothing else on this page matters until you can read a temperature and a weight the same way twice.
The short answer
Consistency is not a technique, it is a specification. Write down eleven variables — wax grade, load, add temperature, stir time, pour temperature, vessel temperature, cooling surface, cooling room temperature, spacing, undisturbed time and judging point — and give each one a single value, not a range you feel your way through.
Then hunt the drift. The last jar of fifty is poured cooler than the first, the room warms through the afternoon, a new wax sack behaves slightly differently, and a second person pours differently from you. Each of those four has a specific control.
Then measure it. Five sampled jars per batch, scored 0–2 on three attributes against a printed photographic standard, logged. Track the worst jar, not the average.

Each bar is the spread of finish quality across one batch of fifty jars; the dashed line is the finish you intended. Adding a control does not move the average much — it narrows the range, which is the whole point. A maker with a good average and a wide range still ships a rough jar, because customers do not receive averages. They receive one jar.

You stop chasing the perfect candle and start shrinking the difference between candles. Pin eleven variables in writing — wax grade, fragrance load, add temperature, stir time, pour temperature, vessel temperature, cooling surface, cooling room temperature, jar spacing, undisturbed time and the moment you judge the result. Two of those figures CSI publishes: Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance in at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring, and CSI 464 states melt and pour in the same band. The other nine you establish on your own bench, once, and then never improvise again. The specification sheet: eleven variables to pin

A recipe tells you what goes in. A specification tells you what the number is, who set it, and what happens when it moves. Most candle businesses in India have the first and not the second.

The word in the title is consistently, and it is doing all the work. Getting one soy candle to come out with a flat, unblemished top is not difficult; most makers manage it in their first month, usually without knowing why. Getting fifty in a row, and then fifty more in November that match September's, is a different discipline. It is not a better technique. It is the removal of variance — and variance is removed by deciding a value in advance and measuring whether you held it.

So the first artefact is not a candle. It is a sheet of A4 taped above the bench with eleven rows, each carrying a number or a named thing and a source: CSI published it, or you established it. The distinction matters enormously and almost nobody makes it. Two figures on the sheet below come from CSI's product specifications. The other nine are yours, and only yours.

The tolerance is part of the specification
"Pour at 60°C" is not a specification, because nobody pours at exactly 60. "Pour at 60°C, accept 58–62, stop and reheat outside that" is one, because it tells the person at the bench what to do when reality does not cooperate. Write the tolerance you can hold with a ₹354 pen thermometer, not the one you wish you could.

Notice what is not on the sheet: skill, care, "doing it properly". Those are not variables, they are moods. If your process only works when you are concentrating, you do not have a process — you have a talent, and talent does not scale to fifty jars or to a second pair of hands.

The commonest specification failure is row one. A maker establishes a pour temperature on CSI 464, buys Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the next month because the 10 kg bag was convenient, and keeps the old number. The finish changes and the wax gets blamed. Those two carry different stated ceilings — 13% against 10% — and they set differently. Change the wax and every downstream number needs re-establishing. CSI 464 runs ₹260 / 500g, ₹507.40 / 1kg, ₹2,537 / 5kg and ₹5,074 / 10kg, so the per-kilogram price stops improving after 1 kg. There is no discount reason to jump to the 10 kg bag.

Where variance creeps into a real batch

The specification is written for jar one. Jars two to fifty happen in a world where the clock moves, the room warms and other people help.

Assume the sheet is correct. You will still get variance, because a production batch is not fifty repetitions of one event — it is one event lasting two hours that drifts the whole way through. Four drifts show up on a real workbench. The defects they produce belong to the siblings: rough tops, frosting, and the case where the same recipe looked smooth yesterday and rough today.

The last jar of fifty is poured cooler than the firstYou hit the pour temperature perfectly on jar one, and by jar forty the wax has been losing heat to the room for ninety minutes. The finish walks away from specification across the batch, which is why sampling the first few jars tells you nothing. The control: pour in sub-batches sized to what your vessel holds at temperature — with a 600 ml Steel Pouring Pitcher at ₹708 that is a handful of jars, not fifty. Log the batch's first and last reading. If the gap exceeds your tolerance, that is not one batch and should not be judged as one.

The room warms through the afternoonRows six and eight — vessel and cooling room temperature — are the ones you control least and that move most: a workshop at 10am and the same room at 3pm are not the same environment, and October is not January. The control: fix the time of day you pour, or record ambient per sub-batch and code afternoon pours separately. A batch code carrying date and session costs nothing and finds the pattern two months later.

A new wax batch behaves slightly differentlyNatural waxes are agricultural products. Two sacks of the same named grade, bought months apart, can behave a little differently, and the surface shows it first. The control: never let a new sack meet a customer order without a bridge test — five jars against your existing specification, scored with the card below and compared to your logged average. Keep 500 g of the outgoing sack sealed for a side-by-side, and log every sack's invoice date so a change traces to a purchase rather than an argument.

Someone else poursThe moment a second person joins the bench, every number that lived in your head becomes a variable again. They stir for forty seconds because it looks mixed, pour hotter because the wax was thickening, move a jar at ninety minutes because the tray was needed. Each is defensible; each widens the spread. The control: the sheet on the wall is the authority, not anyone's memory. Train with one witnessed pour where every reading is called out, then have them log the four numbers that drift: first and last pour temperature, ambient, and when the last jar was placed. The CSI principle
A natural finish delivered consistently beats a glossy finish delivered erratically. Every time.
This argues against our own interest, so take it seriously: you do not need a different wax to fix an appearance problem. A customer who receives a slightly matte top that looks exactly like the photo they bought from is satisfied. A customer who gets a mirror-smooth jar in March and a rough one in April is not, and no premium wax fixes that — a wider spread is a wider spread whatever you pour. Decide your brand's finish, photograph it, hit it. Writing the judging standard down

Without a written standard, every batch is argued about — usually between you at 9am and you at 6pm, who are two different people with two different levels of patience.

Here is the situation the standard prevents. Forty-eight jars are cooling. Three have a crater near the wick and eleven have a faint bloom. Do those ship? Nobody knows, because "professional-looking" is not a criterion — so the call is made by whoever is most tired, and made differently next week. Over six months what customers receive drifts invisibly, and your brand does not have a look. It has a mood.

The fix is one paragraph and three photographs. The paragraph defines the finish in words a stranger could apply; the photographs make it enforceable, because "slightly" and "faint" mean different things to different people and a picture does not. Tape them next to the specification sheet.

Same light source, distance, angle and background, no editing. A jar shot under warm evening light and one under a white LED are not comparable, and a standard that is not comparable is decoration. Note the light on the printout — "north window, 11am" — and judge real jars under it, at the judging point in row eleven.

Then write the paragraph: name the attributes and give each a tolerance in plain words. For example — surface flat to the eye at arm's length, no dip deeper than a fingernail's thickness, no visible sinkhole at the wick, bloom acceptable if even across the surface, wax against the glass round the full circumference at the top 10 mm. Three rules apply. Write it before the batch. Apply it at the judging point, not whenever you walk past. And use the same standard for a customer order as for stock — a standard that bends under deadline pressure is the deadline's standard, not yours.

Do not write a standard that demands a defect-free surface on natural wax. "No bloom, ever" is a rejection rate, not a quality bar, and your team will quietly stop applying it within a fortnight — worse than no standard at all. Set photo B where you can genuinely hold it and tighten later, once the logged spread has narrowed. Measuring variance: five jars, three scores, one log

You cannot manage a spread you have never written down. Five minutes per batch converts an impression into a number you can compare with the number from six weeks ago.

Sample five jars from every batch, positionally rather than randomly: first poured, the quarter point, the middle, the three-quarter point, last poured. That is the whole trick, because the drifts above are almost all time-ordered. Five random jars from the middle of a tray hide the pattern; five spread across the pour show the last jar cooling differently from the first, in numbers, on the day it happens.

Six points per jar, thirty per batch — meaningless alone, enormously useful in a column. Track the batch total and the worst single jar. The worst jar is what matters commercially: a batch scoring 26/30 from jars at 5, 6, 6, 6, 3 is a worse outcome than 25/30 from 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, because the first shipped somebody a bad candle and the second did not.

Two months of that log is the deliverable — not a perfect batch, a column of numbers. Read it for three things. Is the worst-jar figure rising? The process is stabilising. Does the last-jar score sit below the first? Pour temperature is drifting and sub-batches are too large. Do low totals cluster on particular dates, sacks or ambient temperatures? That is your dominant variable. A maker who can say "our worst jar has not scored below four in eleven batches" has a controlled process. "Our candles come out really well usually" is a hope.

Wax melters — a volume decision, not a quality one
A melter fixes exactly one problem: wax that will not hold a temperature while you pour. That is drift number one above. It is also, at these prices, a volume decision and nothing else. The fourth column is the same money as kilograms of CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg, because that is the trade. At twenty jars a month, the ₹23,600 machine buys nothing a ₹354 thermometer and a smaller sub-batch will not.

We sell the Hot Air Gun at ₹531, and it should not be in your standard operating procedure. A heat gun is a genuinely useful rescue for a jar that has already gone wrong, and the method is set out in can I fix a rough candle top with a heat gun. But if it is a routine step between pouring and labelling, read that honestly: your process is producing a defect on every jar and you have built a repair station instead of fixing it. Worse, re-melting by hand adds a fresh uncontrolled variable — how long the operator held the gun there. Use it on exceptions. One last row to pin is not equipment: the vessel. Glass thickness and internal diameter are part of how a jar cools, so mixing two jar types in one batch and judging them against one standard is a category error. Run more than one vessel and you run more than one sheet and more than one log — the containers collection holds 80 products and they do not all behave alike. Which temperatures does CSI actually publish, and which do I have to work out myself?
Two. Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies adding fragrance at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states melt and pour in the same 80–90°C band. Pour temperature, vessel temperature, cooling room temperature, spacing, undisturbed time and your judging point are published by nobody, because they depend on your jar, your room and your season. Establish each, write it on the sheet with a tolerance, log every batch against it.
How many candles should I check from each batch?
Five, by position rather than at random — first poured, quarter, middle, three-quarter, last. Position matters because most batch drift is time-ordered. Score each on three attributes at 0–2, giving six per jar and thirty per batch, then record the batch total and the worst single jar. The worst jar is the commercial number: customers receive one candle, not an average.
Do I need a wax melter to get a consistent finish?
No. You need to hold a pour temperature; a melter is one way. The Mini Electric Wax/Soap Melter (1 L) is ₹2,360 and the larger machines run ₹21,240 to ₹25,960 — roughly 42 to 51 kg of CSI 464. At small volumes a ₹354 pen thermometer and smaller sub-batches give the same control. Should I use a heat gun to smooth every top?
Only as a rescue, never as a routine step. The Hot Air Gun is ₹531 and it genuinely repairs an individual jar — the method is in can I fix a rough candle top with a heat gun. But in the standard procedure it means every jar is being repaired, and it adds a fresh uncontrolled variable: how long the operator held the gun. Fix the pour and cooling rows and keep the gun for exceptions.
Is a glossy, perfectly flat top worth chasing on soy wax?
Only if you can hit it every time. A natural, slightly matte finish delivered consistently is worth more commercially than a glossy one delivered erratically, because what a customer compares against is your product photograph, not an ideal.
