How to Price Candles for Wholesale Buyers
Share
Do materials get cheaper when I buy for a big order? Some do, most do not. Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil falls from ₹5.43 per gram at 15 gm to ₹2.83 at 1 kg. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 per kg at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg alike, and Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each in every pack from 10 to 1,000.
What wholesale discount should I offer off my retail price? Work it backwards, not as a percentage. At an illustrative retail price of ₹649.00, the classic half-of-MRP ask lands at ₹324.50 and leaves a pool of ₹92.41 per candle after materials. Whether that is generous or suicidal depends entirely on your own freight, labour and packaging figures.
What goes into a wholesale quote besides the price? Minimum order quantity, lead time, who pays freight, payment terms, sample charges, breakage cover and how long the price holds. CSI can price the materials on the quote; every one of those other lines is your own commercial decision and your own number.
What a wholesale buyer is actually asking you for
A boutique owner in Jaipur, a gifting company in Gurugram and a resort purchase manager in Goa all send the same one-line message: what is your wholesale rate. It reads like a request for a number. It is a request for a trading position, and the number is only the part you can calculate. The other six answers decide whether the order is worth having.
The seven lines are the unit price at a stated quantity, the minimum order quantity, the lead time from confirmed order to dispatch, who pays freight, the payment terms, what samples cost, and how long the quoted price stands. CSI can price exactly one of those for you — the materials inside the unit price — because wax, fragrance, wicks and vessels have live prices on the product pages. Freight, credit, samples and time are yours. This page does the first job properly and refuses to guess at the rest.
Get the ordering right, too. Makers usually answer the price question first and the terms question last, which is how a maker ends up delivering 240 candles on 45-day credit to a buyer they met on Instagram. Decide the terms first; they change the price. A buyer who pays half in advance and collects from your door is worth a lower unit price than a buyer who wants 30 days and door delivery — and the gap between those two is often larger than the entire pack saving you fought for on wax.
Step 1 — Rebuild the cost base at the packs the order needs
The candle used throughout this page is a 150 g soy container candle: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil at 8% of wax weight, an Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1), a wick sticker and a Black Glass Jar with Black Lid, whose page gives a fill capacity of about 150 gm. The wax page states a fragrance load of up to 10% and the Citrus Lemon page states 6–10% of total wax weight for soy, so 8% sits comfortably inside both; where a wax ceiling and an oil page differ, the lower figure governs.
Now price that candle twice. Once at the packs a hobby maker buys — a 500 g bag of wax, a 15 gm bottle of oil, ten wicks — and once at the packs a 240-unit order needs. Same candle, same recipe, two different cost bases.
| Line | Small-pack base | Order-pack base | Saving | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soy wax CSI 464, 150 g | ₹78.00 | ₹76.11 | ₹1.89 | ₹520.00/kg at 500 g against ₹507.40/kg from 1 kg upwards |
| Citrus Lemon at 8% of wax weight, 12 g | ₹65.14 | ₹33.98 | ₹31.15 | ₹5.43/g at 15 gm against ₹2.83/g at 1 kg |
| Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 | — | ₹5.90 each in every pack from 10 to 1,000 |
| Wick sticker | ₹2.50 | ₹2.50 | — | One live pack size, 40 stickers |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid | ₹107.00 | ₹107.00 | — | ₹107.00 each at both the pack of 10 and the pack of 20 |
| Material cost per candle | ₹258.54 | ₹225.49 | ₹33.04 | A 12.8% cut, and 94% of it is the fragrance line |
The honest headline is that moving an entire cost base to order packs saved ₹33.04 a candle — and ₹31.15 of it came from one line. Fragrance is where pack size pays. Everything else on this build is flat. If you were expecting the cost base to collapse because the order is big, it does not, and a quote built on that expectation will hurt you at the 500-unit step.
Which pack breaks are real on this catalogue, and which are not
This is the section that will save you from a promise you cannot keep. Before you tell a buyer that a larger order lets you sharpen the price, check whether your inputs actually get cheaper. On CSI's published packs, some lines fall steeply, some barely move, and several do not move at all. The table below reads the live variants for each line and compares the smallest published pack rate with the largest.
| Line | Small pack | Large pack | Change | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil | ₹5.43/g at 15 gm | ₹2.83/g at 1 kg | −48% | Real, and the biggest single lever on a scented candle |
| Tea Lights Aluminium | ₹9.44 at 10 | ₹6.02 at 500 | −36% | Real — matters if tealights are part of the order |
| Performance Wooden Wicks | ₹59.00 at 10 | ₹41.30 at 100 | −30% | Real, and stated on the variant names |
| 200ml Salsa Glass Jar | ₹40.12 at 5 | ₹29.50 at 50 | −26% | Real on this vessel — not on most others |
| Bamboo Stirring Sticks | ₹23.60 at 5 | ₹18.88 at 100 | −20% | Real, but a consumable, not a unit cost |
| Mini Glass Jars | ₹25.96 at 5 | ₹21.24 at 100 | −18% | Real on the 40 ml jar |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹450.00/kg at 1 kg | ₹424.80/kg at 5 kg | −5.6% | Modest, and the page publishes no load figure |
| Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 | ₹650.00/kg at 1 kg | ₹637.00/kg at 5 kg | −2% | Small, and it stops after 5 kg |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹520.00/kg at 500 g | ₹507.40/kg at 10 kg | −2.4% | One small step at 1 kg, then flat to 10 kg |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | ₹5.90 at 10 | ₹5.90 at 500 | 0% | No break at all — buy for convenience, not price |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid | ₹107.00 at 10 | ₹107.00 at 20 | 0% | Flat — vessel cost will not fall with order size |
Read that table as a pricing constraint, not as a shopping list. On a 150 g glass candle the two biggest lines by value are the jar (₹107.00) and the wax (₹76.11), and neither of them falls as the order grows. The line that does fall is the one most makers have already optimised, because everybody buys fragrance in 500 g or 1 kg packs by their second year. Which means the extra room you think a 500-unit order creates mostly is not there.
Where a genuinely large consignment is involved — beyond the largest published pack on a product page — the honest answer is that CSI's published rates are the published rates and anything beyond them is a conversation. Ask on WhatsApp with your quantities before you commit a price to a buyer, not after.
Step 2 — Quote the pack-fit cost, not the theoretical cost
A 240-candle order at 150 g needs 36,000 g of wax. Add a 5% wastage allowance — an assumption, not measured data, covering what stays in the pitcher, what is lost in a failed pour and the odd jar with a bad set — and you need 37.8 kg. There is no 37.8 kg pack. You buy 38 kg, and the cost per candle rises accordingly. The same happens to oil, wicks and stickers.
| Line | Needed | Packs bought | Bought | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soy wax CSI 464 | 37.8 kg | 3 × 10 kg, 1 × 5 kg, 3 × 1 kg | 38 kg | ₹19,281.20 |
| Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil | 3,024 g | 3 × 1 kg, 1 × 50 gm | 3,050 g | ₹8,666.00 |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid | 240 | 24 × pack of 10 | 240 | ₹25,680.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 240 | 2 × 100, 1 × 50 | 250 | ₹1,475.00 |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 240 | 6 sheets of 40 | 240 | ₹600.00 |
| Order total | — | — | — | ₹55,702.20 |
| Per candle | — | — | — | ₹232.09 |
The pack-fit cost is ₹232.09 against a theoretical ₹225.49 — ₹6.60 a candle, or ₹1,583.64 across the order. That is not a rounding error you can ignore on a thin wholesale margin, and it is the number to quote from. The consolation is that the surplus is real inventory: 200 g of wax, 26 g of oil and ten wicks carry into the next run, so a repeat order at the same size is genuinely cheaper than the first.
One more line belongs here if your buyer is a retailer: the Candle Care Stickers Roll at ₹0.83 a sticker (₹413.00 for 500). Burn instructions on the base are what a shop wants on the shelf, and at under a rupee a candle it is the cheapest thing on this list to say yes to.
Step 3 — Build a quantity-break ladder you can honour
A wholesale price list usually has three or four steps. The mistake is to design them downwards from the retail price — 10% off, 20% off, 30% off — because that says nothing about whether the bottom step is survivable. Design them upwards from the pack-fit cost of ₹232.09 instead, and read the bottom step first.
| Tier | Illustrative unit price | Materials | Pool per candle | Pool as % of price | Pool on the whole tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 units | ₹399.00 | ₹232.09 | ₹166.91 | 41.8% | ₹8,345.38 |
| 100 units | ₹369.00 | ₹232.09 | ₹136.91 | 37.1% | ₹13,690.75 |
| 250 units | ₹339.00 | ₹232.09 | ₹106.91 | 31.5% | ₹26,726.88 |
| 500 units | ₹319.00 | ₹232.09 | ₹86.91 | 27.2% | ₹43,453.75 |
| Half of an illustrative ₹649.00 retail price | ₹324.50 | ₹232.09 | ₹92.41 | 28.5% | — |
Two things fall out of that table immediately. First, the pool shrinks faster than the price: a ₹80.00 cut from the top step to the bottom is 20% off the price but 48% off the pool, because materials do not shrink with it. Second, the whole-tier column is the one to show your buyer's quantities against — ₹43,453.75 of pool on a 500-candle order sounds healthy until you put your courier bill, your labels and three weeks of your own time beside it.
The lines only you can fill: freight, terms, samples, breakage
CSI sells raw materials. It does not sell cartons, mailers, printed labels, ribbon, courier services, credit or your working hours, and it publishes no rates for any of them — so none of them appears as a number anywhere on this page. They still belong on your quote sheet, as blanks you fill from your own bills and your own bank statement.
| Line | Ask whom | Unit | For a 240-candle order | Your figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Printed labels and base stickers | Your printer | per candle | 240 | ________ |
| Individual box or sleeve | Your packaging supplier | per candle | 240 | ________ |
| Outer carton, void fill, tape | Your packaging supplier | per carton | as packed | ________ |
| Outbound freight to the buyer | Your courier or transporter | per consignment | 4 store deliveries | ________ |
| Inbound freight on your raw materials | Your supplier at checkout | per consignment | 1–2 consignments | ________ |
| Samples sent before the order | You | per sample | typically 3–6 | ________ |
| Your labour and electricity | Your own record | per hour | pour, cure, pack | ________ |
| Breakage and rejects in transit | Your own record | % of units | your allowance | ________ |
| Payment terms cost | Your own bank | days of credit | as agreed | ________ |
| Your own cost per candle | — | — | — | ________ |
Then the quote is honest arithmetic: CSI materials ₹232.09 plus your own cost per candle equals your true floor, and the difference between that floor and the tier price is what the business keeps. Anyone who tells you the second number without seeing your bills is selling you something.
Samples deserve their own line. Six sample candles at the same build cost ₹1,352.96 in materials alone, before the courier that carries them. Whether you absorb that, charge it, or credit it against the first order is a commercial choice — but decide it before a buyer asks, because "send me a few samples first" is the most common sentence in Indian wholesale and the one most likely to be answered without arithmetic.
What to put in writing before you accept a wholesale order
A candle is a fragile, seasonal, hand-poured product with a cure time, so the paperwork around a wholesale order is doing real work. Six clauses cover almost every argument a small Indian candle brand ends up having with a buyer.
Quantity and split. 240 candles across four stores is four deliveries, not one. Scent and colour lock. Once the sample is approved, changes cost a batch. Lead time from advance received, not from the date of the conversation. Freight responsibility and the address list. Breakage cover — who owns glass that arrives cracked, and how a claim is evidenced. Price validity — say the quote holds for a stated number of days, because your inputs are live prices that can change and the product pages are always authoritative.
Documentation is part of the answer to a serious buyer. CSI provides GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation for the materials is available on request via WhatsApp +91 7397976926. Hotel and corporate purchase departments in particular will ask, and having the supplier documentation to hand is worth more in that conversation than another rupee off the price. Tax, registration and licensing questions are for your own adviser, not for a supplier's blog.
What makes an Indian wholesale candle quote different
Soy is soft. A carton of 150 g soy candles sitting in a delivery van in Nagpur in May, or in a Delhi warehouse under a tin roof in June, does not arrive as it left: tops slump, tunnels form, and adhesion marks appear against the glass. None of that is a supplier defect and all of it is your problem in a wholesale relationship, where the buyer sees the stock before the customer does. Build a breakage and rework allowance into your own worksheet, state a percentage, and call it an assumption.
Monsoon adds the second tax. Humidity in Mumbai, Kochi and Kolkata slows every part of a production week, and cartons stored on a damp floor mark. If a wholesale order lands between June and September, your labour line goes up, not down. Quote the season you are actually working in.
Then there is the festival cliff. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, and wholesale buyers want stock on shelves two to three weeks before, which — with a 14–21 day cure — means pouring by about mid-October and locking materials well before that. A wholesale price agreed in September for October delivery is a price you have to hold through your busiest buying month, so give the quote an expiry date and mean it.
Six ways Indian candle brands lose money on wholesale
1. Quoting off the theoretical cost. The tidy ₹225.49 looks better than the pack-fit ₹232.09, and it is wrong by ₹6.60 a candle on every unit you make.
2. Assuming volume buys a cheaper cost base. On this catalogue the wax rate is flat from 1 kg to 10 kg and the eco wick is ₹5.90 in every pack. The saving you promised has to come from your own pool.
3. Forgetting that a jar is the biggest line. On a 150 g glass candle the vessel is the single largest material cost and it does not move with order size. If a wholesale price genuinely will not work, change the vessel or the fill size, not the wax brand.
4. Giving credit you have not costed. Thirty days of credit on a 240-candle order means you fund the whole basket before you are paid a rupee. That is a financing decision, not a pricing one, and it belongs on the worksheet.
5. Free samples with no ceiling. Six candles at ₹1,352.96 of materials is a real cost repeated for every enquiry that never converts.
6. No reorder price. The second order is cheaper to make — leftovers carry, wicking is settled, the pour is practised. A repeat 100-candle run at this build is ₹23,209.25 of materials before those carry-overs. Decide in advance what a repeat buyer gets, rather than negotiating it again from zero.
If any of those six is true of your last quote, reprice the next one from the basket up. The equipment side is worth a sentence too: a Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00, a Steel Pouring Pitcher 600 ml at ₹708.00 and a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 are one-off purchases that make a 240-candle run repeatable, and they belong in your equipment budget rather than in the unit price of one order. The Candle Making Weighing Scale at ₹354.00 is currently down to very few units, so if your process depends on weighing every pour, order it early rather than assuming it will be there in October.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, so this page prices the materials in your wholesale quote and stops there. It says plainly that buying bigger packs mostly does not lower your cost base on this catalogue — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 per kg at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg, the Eco Candle Wick is ₹5.90 in every pack, and the 150 g jar rate does not change between the pack of 10 and the pack of 20. A cheaper grade such as Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399.20 per kg would take ₹16.23 off the wax line, although its fragrance load is not published — ask on WhatsApp before you build a quote on it.
Every material price comes from live CSI stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Costs CSI does not sell — labels, cartons, void fill, courier, credit, samples, labour and breakage — appear as blank inputs and are never estimated. Every unit price, tier and retail reference on this page is illustrative arithmetic, not a CSI price recommendation. The 5% wastage allowance is a stated assumption, not measured data. Nothing here is tax, registration or licensing advice; ask your own adviser.
Message WhatsApp +91 7397976926 for bulk pricing beyond the published packs, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation for a purchase department, or help matching a wax, oil and vessel combination to the unit price a wholesale buyer is asking for.
