I Can Get a Better Wax Price if I Buy 100 Kg Instead of 25 Kg — How Do I Determine Whether My Current Sales Are High Enough to Justify the Larger Purchase?

The discount against the holding cost

Use the prices you have actually been quoted. For this page, take a quote of ₹599.00 a kilo for 25 kg and ₹560.00 a kilo for 100 kg. The first matches CSI's listed Luxury Soy Wax Chunks rate so the arithmetic has a real anchor; the second is the reader's hypothetical better price, 6.5% lower. Replace both with your own quote — the method does not change.

Over the time it takes to use 100 kg, the 100 kg deal saves ₹39.00 a kilo, ₹3,900.00 in total. That is the whole of the upside. The downside is stock. Buying 25 kg at a time, your wax shelf swings from 25 kg down to nothing, averaging 12.5 kg — ₹7,487.50 of stock. Buying 100 kg, it swings from 100 kg to nothing, averaging 50 kg — ₹28,000.00. Safety stock sits on top of both and cancels out. So the 100 kg deal holds ₹20,512.50 more stock on average, for as long as it takes to use 100 kg.

Holding stock costs money even if no one sends a bill. The cash could have paid down a loan, bought fragrance for a festive launch, or sat in the bank. Wax takes space you may be paying for, and a large stock risks damage, contamination or simply a change of wax before it is used. Put a monthly percentage on all of that. We use 2% a month as an example; a business borrowing expensive money should use more, one with idle cash less. It is your number, not a market fact.

The break-even in candles a month

The holding cost of the deal is ₹20,512.50 × 2% × (100 ÷ monthly kg). Set it equal to the ₹3,900.00 saving and solve: 10.52 kg of wax a month. Below that, the 100 kg deal costs more than it saves; above it, it saves more. Each 200 g candle at 8% takes 184 g of wax, 189.52 g with a 3% loss allowance, so the break-even is about 56 candles a month.

The money test is easy to pass. By 100 candles a month the deal is comfortably ahead, and by 300 the net saving is close to the full ₹3,900.00. But look at the third column. At 100 candles a month, 100 kg lasts 5.3 months. That is where the second test comes in.

Double the holding rate and the break-even doubles. That is why the rate deserves a moment's honest thought. If buying 100 kg means putting it on a credit card or delaying a supplier payment, your real rate is high. If the cash would otherwise sit idle, it is low — but idle cash is rare in a growing candle business.

The second test: months of cover

Months of cover = 100 ÷ monthly kg. Set a ceiling on how many months of wax you are willing to hold, whatever the discount. We use three months as a working cap: long enough to capture most of a volume price, short enough that one slow month or a change of wax does not leave you stuck with a mountain of bags. CSI does not publish a shelf life for its waxes — check the product page, store wax cool, dry and sealed, and use older stock first.

With a three-month cap, 100 kg must be used at 33.33 kg a month or more — about 176 candles of 200 g at 8%. That is the number that usually decides the question, because it sits well above the money break-even. Between about 56 and 176 candles a month the deal saves money but over-stocks you; buy 50 kg if your supplier will price it in between, or stay at 25 kg.

The discount you need

Turn the question around: at your sales, how big must the discount be for 100 kg to break even? The table below solves that at the 2% example holding rate, starting from ₹599.00 a kilo for 25 kg.

At 60 candles a month, anything under about 6.1% off loses money once holding is counted. At 300 candles a month even 1.3% pays. If a quote offers less than the figure for your row, the smaller order is cheaper in real terms, whatever the headline price says.

What CSI's listed packs actually do

A worked case to finish. A maker selling 120 candles a month uses 22.74 kg of wax. On the reader's quote, 100 kg would last 4.4 months, cost ₹1,803.90 to hold and save ₹2,096.10 net.
