Change control · Wick adhesive
A wick adhesive does its hardest work in the last burns, when heat reaches the base. A tab that lifts lets the wick lean and the flame drift towards the glass — so an adhesive change is validated by burning to the end, against the adhesive you used before.

Quick answers — read this first
Should the wick adhesive be part of validation? Yes. Anything in the jar when the candle burns can change how it ends. A lifting tab lets the wick lean and moves the flame off centre — a safety line.

Why do tabs lift late, not early? Solid wax protects the bond through most of the candle. In the last burns heat reaches the base and the tab; a bond that softens with heat tends to fail there.

What do I test? Old adhesive, new adhesive and a candidate fix, three candles each, all burned to the end — plus a bond check before pour and a centring check at set.

What does CSI sell for this? Wick Stickers, 40 for ₹100.00. The test kit costs ₹2,993.30. Glue dots and hot glue are not CSI products. See the kit.
The short answer
Answer: Yes. KEEP load and wick size; CONFIRM early burns; REPEAT end-of-life, centring and flame position; NEW bond checks and a written application method.
Test: O old · N new · S candidate fix, 3 × 200 g each, every candle to the end of usable wax.
Rule: Release only an adhesive that holds through life as well as the old one. Never redesign the candle around a weak bond. See the tab-height post for the tab itself.

The four moments an adhesive is tested. Before the pour it only has to hold a tab; during the pour it meets hot wax; through mid-life it is protected by solid wax; in the last burns heat reaches the base, and a weak bond lets the tab lift and the wick lean. The test therefore burns every candle to the end. Candle counts are labelled working practice.
Straight answer
I changed my wick adhesive and tabs are now lifting during burning — should production materials outside the wax formula also be part of validation?
Yes. Anything that is in the jar when the candle burns belongs in validation, whether or not it appears on the recipe card. A wick adhesive holds the tab through the whole life of the candle and is tested hardest at the end: solid wax protects the bond for most of the candle, but in the last burns heat reaches the base and the tab, and in general practice an adhesive that softens with heat tends to let go there. A lifted tab lets the wick lean or drift in the pool, moving the flame off centre and, in the worst case, towards the glass — a safety failure, not a cosmetic one. So KEEP your wax, fragrance and wick-size results, but REPEAT end-of-life burning, centring and flame position, and add NEW bond checks and a written application method. Test the old adhesive, the new one and a candidate fix — three 200 g candles each, all burned to the end of usable wax. CSI's listed adhesive is Wick Stickers, 40 for ₹100.00; glue dots and hot glue are not CSI products. The nine-candle kit costs ₹2,993.30.
One line: if it holds the wick, it is an ingredient for validation — and it is tested in the last burn, not the first.
Tabs lifting after an adhesive change? The three-way comparison on this page — old adhesive, new adhesive and CSI's Wick Stickers (₹100.00 for 40), 9 candles of 200 g in White Matte jars with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Sandalwood at 8% — costs ₹2,993.30 at CSI's listed prices.

Yes — anything that holds the wick is part of the candle

The recipe card lists wax, fragrance and wick. The candle also contains whatever keeps that wick standing.

Most makers validate the materials on the recipe card and treat everything else as equipment. The wick adhesive — a sticker, a glue dot, a dab of hot glue — sits in that blind spot. It never appears in the fragrance maths and it costs a rupee or two per candle, so changing it feels like changing a brand of packing tape. Your lifting tabs are the proof that it is not. The adhesive holds the tab to the base of the jar for the whole life of the candle, and it is asked to do its hardest work at the very end, when the melt pool is close to the base and heat has reached the tab. A bond that is fine at the pour can let go on the last three burns.

When it lets go, the failure is not cosmetic. In general candle-making practice, a tab that lifts lets the wick lean or drift in the liquid pool, which moves the flame off centre and, in the worst case, towards the glass wall. That is a safety line, not an appearance line. So the answer to the title is plain: yes. Production materials outside the wax formula belong in validation whenever they can change how the candle burns or ends — wick adhesive, wick tabs, centring devices left in place, lids used while burning, anything in the jar with the wax.

The CSI principle
If it is in the jar when the candle burns, it is an ingredient for validation purposes.
The adhesive is not on the recipe, but it is under the flame at the end. Test it through the last burn, against the adhesive you used to use.

Why a tab lifts, and why it happens late

Three things act on a wick adhesive. At the pour, hot wax meets the adhesive for the first time; a bond that softens in hot wax can let the tab slide before the wax sets, so the wick is off centre from day one. Through life, the tab sits under solid wax, which protects the bond. At the end, the pool approaches the base, heat conducts down through the metal tab and the glass, and the adhesive is warmed from above and below. In general practice, an adhesive that softens with heat or loses grip in contact with wax and fragrance oil tends to fail here. That is why most adhesive changes pass a three-burn check and fail a full-life one.

A fourth factor is not the adhesive at all: the surface it is stuck to. Dust, a film of moisture, or a thin coat of wax on the jar base can weaken any bond. When makers change adhesive, they often change the way they apply it too — pressing for less time, sticking into jars straight from washing. Your test should hold application constant, so that the adhesive is the only variable. The one-variable post explains why that matters when the cause is not obvious.

The fix that hides the cause. The tabs lift, so the maker switches to a thicker wick to "burn down faster before the tab lets go", or pours the wax cooler, or trims the wick shorter. Each of those changes something else about the candle and none of them tests the bond. If the new adhesive cannot hold through the last burns, the answer is a better bond — the old adhesive, a different adhesive, or better application — not a candle redesigned around a weak one.

The retest matrix for an adhesive change

Wick adhesive changed · wax, oil, load, wick, jar unchanged
KEEP, CONFIRM, REPEAT, NEW
Earlier result Status What to do
Fragrance load and scent KEEP None
Wick size selection KEEP Approved wick in every arm
Melt pool and flame, early burns CONFIRM Three cycles, all arms — mainly to spot off-centre wicks
End-of-life behaviour REPEAT Every candle to the end of usable wax
Wick centring after pour REPEAT Measure offset from centre at set, every candle
Tab bond before pour NEW Stick-and-pull check on a spare jar, each adhesive
Tab bond after the last burn NEW Is the tab still stuck when the candle is spent?
Flame-to-glass distance in last burns REPEAT Record against the control; no numeric limit published
Application method NEW Write it down: surface prep, press time, time before pour
If you still have the old adhesive, it is your control
The cleanest test compares the old adhesive, the new one and a candidate fix in the same wax, jar and wick. If the old adhesive is gone, use your retained production candles' records as the reference and let the candidate fix and the new adhesive compete; a fix that holds through life where the new one fails is still a clear result.

The protocol: three adhesives, nine candles, one ending

Every candle in this test is burned to the end. That is the whole point.

Three arms of three candles, a labelled working practice: O, your old adhesive (control); N, the new adhesive that is lifting; S, CSI Wick Stickers as a candidate fix, or any other adhesive you want to try. Each candle is 200 g — 16 g of Sandalwood and 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 8% — in a White Matte Glass Jar whose fill weight is not published, so confirm 200 g at your line by weighing. The wick is priced as Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00 each purely as an example; use your approved wick, and do not change it in this test. CSI does not publish tab height or tab type for its wicks, so record your own.

1
Prepare every jar the same wayClean, dry, dust-free bases. Write down how you prepare them — this becomes part of your process. Stick each tab dead centre and press for the same time. Leave the same interval before pouring for every arm.
2
Bond check on the spare jarStick one tab of each adhesive to the spare jar, wait the same interval, and pull each by the wick. Note which lifts easily, which tears the adhesive, and which pulls the tab off its wick first. It is a qualitative check, not a force measurement, but it catches a weak bond before you pour.
3
Pour and check centring at setFollow the wax maker's instructions for temperatures. Use your usual centring method, then measure how far each wick sits from the jar's centre once set. A tab that slid during the pour shows here.
4
Three early cyclesAbout 3–4 hours each with full cool-down, all nine candles in one room. Score the sheet below.
5
Continue every candle to the endThis is the step that answers the question. In the last burns, check the wick's lean and the flame's position relative to the glass at the start and end of each burn. Never leave these burns unattended.
6
Inspect the spent jarsWhen each candle is spent, record whether the tab is still stuck, partly lifted or free, and weigh the wax left. Photograph each base.

The scoring sheet

Score N and S against O. CSI publishes no numeric flame-height, jar-temperature or flame-to-glass limit, and we will not invent one. Every safety line passes on "no worse than the control", within your jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to — ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US example. A candle whose flame drifts towards the glass in its last burns fails, whatever else it does well.

O = old adhesive · N = new adhesive · S = candidate fix
Adhesion and end-of-life scoring sheet
Line When How Pass if
Bond on spare jar Before pour Pull by the wick: holds / peels / releases As good as O
Wick offset from centre At set Ruler from jar centre, mm Within the spread of O
Melt pool and flame Burns 1–3 Ruler, card scale Within the spread of O
Wick lean Every late burn Upright / slight / clear lean No more than O
Flame position vs glass Every late burn Centred / off-centre / near the wall No worse than O
Tab movement seen Every late burn None / shifting / floating None the control lacks
Jar-side reading, last burns At 3 h Same thermometer, same spot No hotter than O
Tab still bonded when spent End of life Stuck / partly lifted / free As good as O
Wax left in jar End of life Weigh Within the spread of O

The last two lines are the ones that settle an adhesive question. A tab that is still firmly bonded under a spent candle has done its job. A tab that is free when you lift the spent jar may not have caused trouble in that particular burn — but it was free for some part of the end of life, and the next candle in a draughtier room may not be so lucky.

The priced test kit

Nine 200 g candles with a 5% pour-loss allowance (a working assumption) need 1,890 g of finished candle: 1,738.8 g of wax and 151.2 g of oil at 8%. Wax and oil are CSI live pricing pulled 24 September 2026; stickers from the same catalogue pull; jars and wicks are Blog 760's verified figures, with wick packs rechecked on 25 September 2026.

9 × 200 g · 8% · 5% loss · + 1 empty jar
Adhesive test kit, priced (CSI items)
Item Need Buy Price
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 1,738.8 g 2 × 1 kg ₹1,198.00
Sandalwood Fragrance Oil 151.2 g 100 g + 50 g + 15 g ₹867.30
White Matte Glass Jar 10 jars (9 poured + 1 bond check) 2 × pack of 5 ₹708.00

Wick Stickers 3 jars + spares for bond checks 1 × 40 ₹100.00
Test-kit total ₹2,993.30

Chunks cost ₹1,196.00 as 4 × 500 g, ₹1,198.00 as 2 × 1 kg and ₹1,197.00 as 1 kg + 2 × 500 g — within ₹2.00 of each other, so buy the fewest bags. Sandalwood is cheapest as 100 g + 50 g + 15 g (₹867.30) against ₹1,005.36 for 2 × 100 g. The stickers work out at ₹2.50 each. Your old and new adhesives are not CSI products and are not priced; hot glue and glue dots are named only as examples of what makers commonly use, not recommendations.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. If your old adhesive held and it is still available, go back to it — even if ours is cheaper, and even though this page links to ours. An adhesive that has passed years of full-life burns in your jars is worth more than a saving of a rupee a candle. Equally, before you buy anything, check the application: a sticker pressed onto a damp or dusty base will fail whatever brand it is. And you do not need a ₹399.00 wick setting tool or a ₹118.00 set of centring devices to fix a bond problem; those help with centring, not adhesion.

The decision rule

Apply after every candle is spent
Which adhesive to release
Result Decision Next step
S holds through life as well as O; no lean or drift RELEASE S Record adhesive, pack, application method
N fails late; O holds RETURN to O (if available) Record N as rejected, with the reason
N and S both fail late; O holds but is unavailable ESCALATE Test another adhesive or improve application; do not release
All three fail, including O Not an adhesive problem Check jar base prep, tab and wick — see the tab-change post
Any candle whose flame reached the wall in late burns FAIL that arm A safety line; no trade-off

Pay attention to the fourth row. If the old adhesive also lets go in this test, something else changed at the same time — a new jar with a smoother or coated base, a different wick tab, a new washing routine. Adhesive is the change you know about; it may not be the only one. The two-changes post walks through isolating a hidden second change.

Tab failures are worst on long-burning festive stock. If you are pouring for Diwali (8 November 2026) with a new adhesive, run the full-life test now and hold the batch until it passes. This page is the one in its cluster about a material that never touches the recipe. Its neighbours — mixing by machine and a bigger melter — are about process rather than materials, and share the same principle: if it can change how the candle burns or ends, it belongs in validation. The significance checklist places adhesive changes in the full-life tier for exactly that reason, and the specification post shows how to list an adhesive, with its application method, in an approved-material specification.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell wick stickers and include them here as a candidate, not a guaranteed fix — we publish no heat or bond rating for them. If your old adhesive held and is still available, this page tells you to go back to it.

Wax, oil and sticker prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Jar, wick and tool prices are Blog 760's figures verified on 10 September 2026, with wick packs rechecked on 25 September 2026. The candle split, allowance and pack rounding are arithmetic, shown in full; non-CSI adhesives are not priced.

The arms, candle counts, burn cycles and 5% loss allowance are labelled working practices; the bond check is qualitative. CSI publishes no tab specification for its wicks and no numeric flame-height, jar-temperature or flame-to-glass limit; judge every line against the old-adhesive control and the fire-safety standard you work to, and never leave late burns unattended. Frequently asked questions

Why are my candle wick tabs lifting?
Commonly because the adhesive softens or loses grip as heat reaches the base in the last burns, or because the jar base was dusty, damp or waxy when the tab was stuck. Compare adhesives in the same jar with the same preparation.
Are wick stickers better than hot glue?
Neither is better in general. The right adhesive is the one that holds through the last burn in your jar, wax and wick. Test them side by side to the end of usable wax.
Is a lifting wick tab dangerous?
It can be. A lifted tab lets the wick lean and the flame drift towards the glass. Treat it as a safety failure, stop using that adhesive and never leave late burns unattended.
Do I need to retest the whole candle if I change wick adhesive?
Not the recipe — fragrance load and wick size stay valid. You must retest how the candle ends: every test candle burned to the end, with centring and tab state recorded.
Does CSI sell glue dots for wicks?
No. CSI lists Wick Stickers, 40 for ₹100.00; the 100-sheet pack was out of stock on the 24 September 2026 pull. Glue dots and hot glue are not CSI products.
Should I use a bigger wick so the candle finishes before the tab lifts?
No. That redesigns the candle around a weak bond and makes it burn hotter. Fix the adhesive or its application — the significance checklist explains why.
A bond that lasts to the end
Test the adhesive where it fails — in the last burns — against the one you trusted.
Wick Stickers ₹100.00 for 40, Cotton Braided Wicks at ₹12.00 each, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹599.00 a kilo, Sandalwood from ₹93.22 and White Matte jars at ₹354.00 for 5. Tell us about your lifting tabs and we will help you plan the comparison.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished weight (oil = W × L). The 200 g White Matte fill is not published — confirm by a weighed pour. CSI publishes no tab height, tab type or bond rating for its wicks or stickers. Test conventions on this page — at least 3 candles per variant, one variable changed at a time, burn cycles of about 3–4 hours with full cool-down, cure checkpoints of 48 hours, 7 days and 14 days, a full-life burn to the end of usable wax — are labelled working practices you may change, not standards. The bond check is qualitative. The 5% pour-loss allowance is a working assumption. CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limit.
