I Currently Buy Soy Wax in 1 Kg Packs but Use 20 Kg Every Month — At What Point Does Moving to 10 Kg or 25 Kg Packs Make More Sense?
Share
Where is the real saving? Natural Soy Pearl Wax drops from ₹450.00 to ₹424.80 a kg at 5 kg, a 5.6% break. At 20 kg a month that is ₹504.00 a month, ₹6,048.00 a year. The 10 kg and 50 kg packs cost the same per kg as the 5 kg.
Should I buy a 25 kg pack? CSI does not list a 25 kg pack for any soy wax. The listed packs stop at 10 kg, except Natural Soy Pearl at 50 kg. If you hold a 25 kg quote, it covers 37.5 days at your usage, and the extra stock costs about ₹22.46 a month to hold at our example rate. See judging a 25 kg quote.
How much cash does each choice tie up? Ordering 20 kg once a month keeps about 10 kg on the shelf on average: ₹5,990.00 of Chunks or ₹4,248.00 of Pearl. At an example holding cost of 1.5% a month, that is ₹89.85 or ₹63.72 a month. Full table in cash tied up.
The wax pack ladder, priced per kg
CSI lists three soy waxes that production makers buy by the kilo. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are a container wax rated up to 13% fragrance load, the wax maker's stated maximum. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 flakes are rated up to 10%. Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no fragrance ceiling quoted in this series, so check its product page or ask CSI before you move a recipe onto it. The table divides each listed pack by its weight.
| Wax | 500 g | 1 kg | 5 kg | 10 kg | 50 kg | Break? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹299.00 (₹598.00/kg) | ₹599.00 (₹599.00/kg) | ₹2,995.00 (₹599.00/kg) | ₹5,999.00 (₹599.90/kg) | Not listed | None — 10 kg is ₹0.90 dearer than 2 × 5 kg |
| CSI 464 flakes | ₹260.00 (₹520.00/kg) | ₹507.40 (₹507.40/kg) | ₹2,537.00 (₹507.40/kg) | ₹5,074.00 (₹507.40/kg) | Not listed | Only 500 g → 1 kg (2.4%) |
| Natural Soy Pearl | Not listed | ₹450.00 (₹450.00/kg) | ₹2,124.00 (₹424.80/kg) | ₹4,248.00 (₹424.80/kg) | ₹21,240.00 (₹424.80/kg) | 5.6% at 5 kg, then flat |
Read the last column first. For the Chunks, the 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg packs are priced as the same wax sold in different bag sizes. The 500 g is fractionally cheaper per kilo than the 1 kg (₹598.00 against ₹599.00), which matters to nobody at 20 kg a month. The 10 kg bag at ₹5,999.00 is ₹0.90 dearer than two 5 kg bags at ₹2,995.00 each. CSI 464 has one small step, from 500 g to 1 kg, and is flat from there. Natural Soy Pearl is the exception. Its per-kilo price falls by ₹25.20, or 5.6%, the moment you move from 1 kg to 5 kg. After that the 10 kg and even the 50 kg pack cost exactly ₹424.80 a kilo, the same as the 5 kg.
That shape tells you what bigger packs are for at CSI's listed prices. For two of the three waxes they buy fewer bags, fewer reorders and less chance of running out, not a lower rate. For the third, the saving is at 5 kg and nowhere else. Volume pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp, and no discount figure is published, so do not plan around one you have not been quoted. The same flat pattern shows up in fragrance oil, where most 1 kg packs cost within 1% of the 100 g per gram. A 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Is Much Cheaper per Gram than 100 g — How Quickly Should I be Using a Fragrance Before Moving to the Larger Pack? covers that side.
Your 20 kg month, bought five ways
Here is the question in the title, priced. Each row buys the same 20 kg. At 184 g of wax per 200 g candle, 20 kg is 108.7 candles on paper, or about 104 after a 4% allowance for pour loss and test burns. The 4% is a working assumption; plan 3–5% and use your own figure once you have tracked a few batches.
| How you buy 20 kg | Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | CSI 464 | Natural Soy Pearl | Bags to handle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 × 1 kg | ₹11,980.00 | ₹10,148.00 | ₹9,000.00 | 20 |
| 4 × 5 kg | ₹11,980.00 | ₹10,148.00 | ₹8,496.00 | 4 |
| 2 × 10 kg | ₹11,998.00 | ₹10,148.00 | ₹8,496.00 | 2 |
| 1 × 10 kg + 2 × 5 kg | ₹11,989.00 | ₹10,148.00 | ₹8,496.00 | 3 |
| 25 kg in one pack | Not listed — quote only | Not listed — quote only | Not listed (50 kg is listed) | 1 |
For the Chunks, the cheapest 20 kg is four 5 kg bags or twenty 1 kg bags, both ₹11,980.00. Two 10 kg bags cost ₹18.00 more. That is small enough to ignore if a 10 kg bag suits your storage better, but it means there is no price reason to prefer 10 kg. For CSI 464 every mix costs ₹10,148.00. For Natural Soy Pearl every mix built from 5 kg or larger costs ₹8,496.00, and only the twenty-bag route costs more. Across a year that twenty-bag habit costs ₹6,048.00 of wax you did not need to pay for.
Days of cover — what a pack means at your usage
The useful way to read any pack is in days of cover at your own usage. A 10 kg bag is a month and a half for a maker using 7 kg a month, and barely two weeks for you. The table converts each pack size into days at four usage levels, taking a month as 30 days.
| Pack | At 5 kg / month | At 10 kg / month | At 20 kg / month (you) | At 40 kg / month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kg | 6.0 days | 3.0 days | 1.5 days | 0.8 days |
| 5 kg | 30.0 days | 15.0 days | 7.5 days | 3.8 days |
| 10 kg | 60.0 days | 30.0 days | 15.0 days | 7.5 days |
| 25 kg (not listed — quote) | 150.0 days | 75.0 days | 37.5 days | 18.8 days |
| 50 kg (Natural Soy Pearl only) | 300.0 days | 150.0 days | 75.0 days | 37.5 days |
At 20 kg a month, a 5 kg bag is 7.5 days of wax and a 10 kg bag 15.0 days. A 25 kg pack, if you were quoted one, would be 37.5 days. Even the 50 kg Natural Soy Pearl pack is 75 days, two and a half months. Compare that with the maker using 5 kg a month, for whom a 50 kg pack is ten months of wax, a real inventory decision. For you, every listed pack is short-term stock. That is why the answer to the title is "now" and not "when you grow".
Days of cover also tells you when to reorder. If a delivery takes, say, 7 days to reach you (an example lead time; use your own), you need at least 7 days of wax on the shelf when you place the order, plus a buffer for a slow week. At 20 kg a month, 7 days is about 4.7 kg. Cash tied up on the shelf
Every kilo on the shelf is money you have paid and not yet turned into candles. A simple way to price that is a holding cost rate: what the money would cost you or earn you elsewhere, plus storage and the small risk of damage. This guide uses an example rate of 1.5% a month (18% a year). It is a placeholder, not a market figure. Replace it with your own cost of money, for example the rate on a working-capital loan or what the cash earns in your account.
If you order a fixed quantity and use it steadily, your average stock is half the order. The table applies that to Natural Soy Pearl at 20 kg a month, with no safety stock, so you can see what each ordering rhythm really costs.
| Ordering rhythm | Orders a year | Cash per order | Average cash on shelf | Holding cost / month (example) | Wax + holding / month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kg twice a month | 24.0 | ₹4,248.00 | ₹2,124.00 | ₹31.86 | ₹8,527.86 |
| 20 kg once a month (4 × 5 kg or 2 × 10 kg) | 12.0 | ₹8,496.00 | ₹4,248.00 | ₹63.72 | ₹8,559.72 |
| Hypothetical 25 kg quote, same ₹424.80/kg | 9.6 | ₹10,620.00 | ₹5,310.00 | ₹79.65 | ₹8,575.65 |
| 50 kg listed pack every 2.5 months | 4.8 | ₹21,240.00 | ₹10,620.00 | ₹159.30 | ₹8,655.30 |
| 20 × 1 kg once a month | 12.0 | ₹9,000.00 | ₹4,500.00 | ₹67.50 | ₹9,067.50 |
Three things come out of this. First, the holding cost differences are small at your usage: between ordering 10 kg twice a month and 20 kg once a month the gap is ₹31.86 a month at the example rate. Second, the pack-size saving dwarfs them: staying on twenty 1 kg bags costs ₹507.78 a month more than four 5 kg bags once holding is included. Third, the 50 kg pack is listed at the same ₹424.80 a kilo as the 5 kg, so buying it only adds holding cost, ₹95.58 a month at the example rate. Buy the 50 kg for stock security or fewer deliveries, not for price.
Judging a 25 kg quote
CSI does not list a 25 kg pack of any soy wax. If you are comparing a 25 kg price from a quote, from CSI on WhatsApp or elsewhere, here is how to judge it at your usage. Ordering 25 kg instead of 20 kg a month raises your average stock from 10 kg to 12.5 kg, an extra 2.5 kg. At the Chunks rate that is ₹1,497.50 more cash on the shelf, costing ₹22.46 a month at the example 1.5% rate. Spread over the 20 kg you use, that is ₹1.12 a kilo, or 0.19% of the price. On Natural Soy Pearl it is ₹15.93 a month, or ₹0.80 a kilo.
| Your wax | Listed best ₹/kg | 25 kg at listed rate (cash on the day) | Extra holding vs 20 kg monthly | 25 kg quote must be below |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹599.00 (1 kg or 5 kg) | ₹14,975.00 | ₹22.46 / month | about ₹597.88 / kg to break even |
| CSI 464 | ₹507.40 | ₹12,685.00 | ₹19.03 / month | about ₹506.45 / kg |
| Natural Soy Pearl | ₹424.80 (5 kg and up) | ₹10,620.00 | ₹15.93 / month | about ₹424.00 / kg |
The honest reading is that at 20 kg a month, holding cost is not what stops a 25 kg purchase. Any quote more than a rupee or two per kilo below the listed rate pays for its own shelf time. What should stop you is anything else: no dry, cool shelf for a large sack, a melter or workflow built around smaller bags, cash on the day (₹14,975.00 for 25 kg of Chunks at the listed rate against ₹11,980.00 for 20 kg), or a quote that is not actually lower per kilo than a listed 5 kg bag. The quote has to beat the best listed per-kg price, not the 1 kg price. A 25 Kg Wax Pack Is Cheaper per Kg than 10 Kg — How Do I Decide Whether the Savings Justify Spending More Cash Upfront? runs this decision at other usage levels, where the answer does change.
The move, step by step
Here is the order to make the change in, so that you save where a saving exists and do not pay for stock you do not need.
The three waxes below are the ones this decision applies to. Each card shows the listed packs with their per-kilo price and how long each one lasts at 20 kg a month.
| Pack | Price | Per kg | Days at 20 kg / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹299.00 | ₹598.00 | 0.75 |
| 1 kg | ₹599.00 | ₹599.00 | 1.5 |
| 5 kg | ₹2,995.00 | ₹599.00 | 7.5 |
| 10 kg | ₹5,999.00 | ₹599.90 | 15.0 |
| Pack | Price | Per kg | Days at 20 kg / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹260.00 | ₹520.00 | 0.75 |
| 1 kg | ₹507.40 | ₹507.40 | 1.5 |
| 5 kg | ₹2,537.00 | ₹507.40 | 7.5 |
| 10 kg | ₹5,074.00 | ₹507.40 | 15.0 |
| Pack | Price | Per kg | Days at 20 kg / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kg | ₹450.00 | ₹450.00 | 1.5 |
| 5 kg | ₹2,124.00 | ₹424.80 | 7.5 |
| 10 kg | ₹4,248.00 | ₹424.80 | 15.0 |
| 50 kg | ₹21,240.00 | ₹424.80 | 75.0 |
What the pack change does not solve
At 20 kg a month, a 4% loss is 800 g of wax, about 4.3 candles' worth, every month. That loss costs the same on any pack size. Weigh what goes into the pouring jug, weigh what ends up in jars, and write down the difference for a month. Many makers find a larger loss than they assumed, in overfilled test pours, jug residue and rejected tops. Cutting that by half saves more on the Chunks than any bag size could. Storage is the other practical limit. Wax is generally kept sealed, off the floor, and away from heat and direct sun. A 10 kg bag in a hot store room in May is a different product from the same bag in November. In general practice, the more you hold, the more it matters where you hold it. If your space is a spare room, two weeks of wax in 5 kg bags may be the better plan than a sack you cannot keep cool. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a page about moving to bigger packs, the convenient advice for us would be to call the 10 kg bag the thrifty choice. Our own listed prices say it is not cheaper per kilo for two of our three soy waxes, and that the only per-kilo break sits at 5 kg on Natural Soy Pearl, so this page says so. We also do not list a 25 kg pack, and the page says that too.
Every wax price on this page is CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Per-kilo prices, 20 kg totals, days of cover and average stock are plain arithmetic on those listed prices and are shown to two decimals so you can check them. Wick and jar prices are not needed for this decision and are not used here.
The 20 kg usage, the 4% allowance, the example 7-day delivery and the example holding cost of 1.5% a month are working assumptions for illustration, not facts about your business or any supplier. Natural Soy Pearl Wax ₹450.00 / 1 kg, ₹2,124.00 / 5 kg, ₹4,248.00 / 10 kg, ₹21,240.00 / 50 kg. No 25 kg pack is listed for any soy wax.
Non-price figures and assumptions: Per-kg prices are pack price ÷ kg. Usage of 20 kg a month is the reader's figure from the title; a month is taken as 30 days. Candle counts assume a 200 g container candle at an 8% load (184 g wax) and a 4% allowance for pour loss and test burns, a working assumption within a 3–5% range. Average stock is taken as half the order quantity with steady use and no safety stock. The holding cost of 1.5% a month (18% a year) and the 7-day delivery time are examples only, not market or supplier figures. Break-even figures for a 25 kg quote compare 25 kg orders with 20 kg monthly orders at that example rate. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
